 I've been trying to get David Walker (Bitter Root, Big Jim and the White Boy, Naomi, Badazz Mofo) on this podcast every season!  Well, it finally happened. I never would have guessed that he'd pick Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy's Master of Kung Fu, but only cause I didn't know anything about those comics.  Having read them now, it's not at all surprising. Keaton Henson is an English musician, composer, and visual artist known for his hauntingly emotional songs and fragile voice. Despite his success, Henson rarely performs live due to severe anxiety and stage fright, which has become a defining part of his story. His debut album Dear… (2010) brought him widespread acclaim for its raw honesty, followed by Birthdays (2013) and Kindly Now (2016), which cemented his reputation as one of Britain's most distinctive singer-songwriters. His orchestral work Six Lethargies was performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican, and his album Monument (2020) was praised for its moving exploration of loss. Alongside his music, he is also a talented illustrator and poet, known for blending art and emotion in all his work. This week in the Flamingo Lounge I sat down with visual artist, Jeff Garbaz, on August 7, 2025 to get a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. Jeff Garbaz has been directing videos and photography for the last 20 years in the entertainment business. He has made a name for himself in the industry by directing video screens in a live atmosphere and has worked all over the world. Some of the venues where he has directed video include Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Roseland Theater in New York City, the Hard Rock in Vegas, and the Masters golf tournament in Augusta. He has also directed tours all over California, the West Coast, and the East Coast. Jeff has worked with over 100 Grammy Award winners in many different genres, including artists such as Crosby, Stills and Nash; B.B. King; Weezer; Buddy Guy; Bonnie Raitt; Doc Watson; Lou Reed; and David Sanborn. He is also one of Carl Palmer's (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer) video directors. Jeff began his career as the singer and songwriter for a band out of Buffalo called “Last Lemming.” After performing on most of the prominent stages in Buffalo, New York, and touring in places like New York City, Jeff moved from being on stage to photographing and doing portraits for other bands. Jeff's photography has been featured in newspapers and magazines, such as The Buffalo News, in over 100 issues.

A singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in Austin. Combining diverse styles, Schneider's music spans genres, blending elements of folk, rock, rap, funk, bluegrass, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. Schneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including: Best Album, Best Songwriter, Best Musician, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin's music history. He started gaining national recognition with his major-label debut Lonelyland. A fiercely-independent artist, Schneider opted to start his own label, Shockorama Records, which has afforded him the freedom to make the music his fans love, on his own terms. Schneider's live performances, both solo and with the band, are legendary. He has two appearances on the Austin City Limits television show and is also in the 20th year of his residency at The Saxon Pub. Bob is also an accomplished visual artist who transforms found visual media into thought-provoking works of art that challenge the viewer's perceptions of contemporary and popular culture. He juxtaposes iconic figures from comic books and other mass media and places them in everyday situations, leaving the viewer to interpret the meaning of the artwork. By appropriating old and valuable books, often intended for mass consumer consumption, Schneider creates something unique and personal for each viewer.

She delves into her impactful 'brown paper bag' series, which explores themes of colorism inspired by her father's stories and broader research. Graham an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, and vocal performance. Utilizing art-making methods rooted in traditional techniques, she studies the notion of “the ancestors” as a conceptual medium through which historical, interpersonal, and introspective insight might be gained.Her conceptual development originates from the veneration of her own lineage, an off-shoot of the African American spiritual tradition of ancestor worship. The work expands to encompass themes of generational love, collective human origin, our relationship to history, and our relationship to the future (the unknown). Working primarily in figuration and portraiture, she utilizes a level of precision in her representation. Her compositions are minimal; the subtlety of the substrate, or the intentional application of color intend for focus to be drawn to the subject. The subtlety of this approach is meant to provide a contemplative environment in which significance might be derived. These aesthetic philosophies of simplicity, stillness, and precision are applied to her performance work as well, which is rooted in her training as a classical vocalist. Here, the human voice is utilized as a kind of clarion. The haunting melodies are structured to slowly fill space and time, drawing viewers in so that they might share in what manifests from the collective experience of song.Mary was born in 2000 and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania amongst a family of artists. She attended California College of the Arts where she received her BFA in Individualized Studies in 2022. Her travels for arts and cultural exchange have taken her around the globe to Mexico, Japan, Kenya, South Africa, Peru, Morocco, Indonesia, and India.Graham has been exhibiting, collaborating and performing nationally since 2006. She was a commissioned artist for projects at Burning Man from 2019 through 2023, performed at the Institute of Contemporary Art + San Francisco in 2022, and in 2024, opened her first solo exhibition at Museum of the African Diaspora as part of their Emerging Artist's Program.
