State Representatives Penny Shaw & Jon Rosenthal joins us on their fight against voter suppression. Activist Neil Aquino fights at Austin Capitol. State Representative Penny Morales Shaw appeared on Politics Done Right. She explained the reason why she joined the Democratic Caucus that bolted from Texas to deny Republicans a quorum and with that denying them the ability to pass their voter suppression bill. She first made it clear that the sacrifice they are making is nowhere close to the sacrifice her constituents will have to make if Republicans have their way. Fareed Zakaria explains how the death and destruction caused by COVID are manmade, given the speed at which the vaccine was developed. And the GOP is responsible. It is easy to blame Republican politicians, Right-Wingers, and, and Evangelicals for COVID vaccine resistance. It is time to assign blame to reporters who lack critical thinking skills as well. Neil Aquino was not going to wait for any organized movement to get involved. He is a citizen who made sure his politicians knew he would not let them rescind our voting rights. Neil wrote on his FB, “I'm going to Austin with a sign saying “We Won't Let Republicans Steal Democracy.” I'll stand in the rotunda of the Capitol for 90 minutes or so with my sign.” District 135 Texas State Representative Jon Rosenthal visits with us to detail why Texas Democrats are in DC and at what cost. Rosenthal wants to make it clear that no Texas taxpayer dollars are going to support them in Washington DC. At great peril to their own personal economies, these brave Democratic Texas legislators are doing all within their power to save Democracy not only for Texans but for the entire country. --- If you like what we do please do the following! We WON! On April 19, 2021 KFFR was granted an "Award of Excellence" from the Colorado Broadcasting Association for "Best Podcast" for small markets in 2020. Our daily program was called the "KFFR Coronacast," and was hosted by Steve Skinner and Stacy Stein. It would have never happened without support from station founder and producer, Denis Moynihan. We were up against some very well-funded radio stations. I have always believed that the audio canvas provides everyone the same opportunities to create valuable, quality programming. The podcast went for months. This podcast is our half-hour edit entry.

Myanmar's new military government has blocked access to Facebook as resistance to Monday's coup surged amid calls for civil disobedience to protest the ousting of the elected civilian government and its leader Aung San Suu Kyi.Facebook is especially popular in Myanmar and the ousted government had commonly made public announcements on the social media site.Internet users said the disruption began late Wednesday night, and mobile service provider Telenor Myanmar confirmed in a statement that mobile operators and internet service providers in Myanmar had received a directive from the communications ministry to temporarily block Facebook.Telenor Myanmar, which is part of the Norwegian Telenor Group, said it would comply, though was concerned the order was a breach of human rights."Telecom providers in Myanmar have been ordered to temporarily block Facebook. We urge authorities to restore connectivity so that people in Myanmar can communicate with family and friends and access important information," said a Facebook spokesperson. The political party ousted in Monday's coup and other activists in Myanmar have called for a campaign of civil disobedience to oppose the takeover. In the vanguard are medical personnel, who have declared they won't work for the military government and who are highly respected for their work during the coronavirus pandemic that is taxing the country's dangerously inadequate health system. For a second night Wednesday, residents in Yangon engaged in "noise protests," with people banging pots and pans and honking car horns under cover of darkness. And the recent protests have revived a song closely associated with the failed 1988 uprising against military dictatorship. Myanmar was under military rule for five decades after a 1962 coup, and Suu Kyi's five years as leader is its most democratic period.Videos posted on social media showed medical personnel especially turned out to sing the song "Kabar Makyay Bu" — or "We Won't Be Satisfied Until the End of the World" — which is sung to the tune of "Dust in the Wind," a 1977 song by the U.S. rock group Kansas. The protest movement seemed to have gotten a boost from the government's treatment of the highly popular Suu Kyi, who was detained along with other government leaders on Monday. Her party said Wednesday she was being charged with possessing illegally imported walkie-talkies — believed to be used by her bodyguards — that were found in her house in the capital Naypyitaw,The charge would allow her to legally be kept in custody until at least Feb. 15. The ousted President Win Myint is being held on a separate charge. Suu Kyi is believed to remain under house arrest at her residence, where she was kept after the army detained her.The charge against Suu Kyi carried a penalty of up to three years in prison.
Critical Race Theory Critical Race Theory is a theory of justice designed to respond to the endemic racism in America’s legal system. It places intersectional anti-racism at the center of analysis of law, politics, and power. It examines the origins of the idea of race and seeks to understand how institutions continue to perpetuate racism today. Although slavery and the genocide of Indigenous people have ceased, these past practices continue to inform our institutional systems and create injustice. Critical Race Theory reveals unconscious bias and systemic disenfranchisement as legacies of racist attitudes and legislation. Inequality as a Threat to Freedom Inequality harms our freedoms in many ways. Corporate monopolization harms our freedom to choose where we get our food, products, and information. Inequality in the form of sexism and racism harms our freedom of expression, such as valuing some people’s ideas over others. Education inequality can harm our freedom to learn, communicate, and succeed. Income inequality can dictate who people listen to in politics through campaign contributions and investments. Solving these inequalities will create a level playing field for everyday citizens to thrive in our society. Harmful Speech Valuing all speech necessitates cracking down on harmful speech. Hate speech has spread rapidly around the internet, which has a stifling effect on many who would otherwise make their voices heard. Hate speech is often directed toward women leaders, journalists, and authors. It can result in resignations and the withdrawal from public life—effectively stifling free speech. Free speech is critical to democracy, so we must keep tabs on speech that decreases the democratic conversation, like racism and misogyny. The market of ideas is suffering a failure, and like the real financial markets, we need better regulation to keep it working correctly. Find out more: Mari J. Matsuda is an American lawyer, activist, critical race theorist, and law professor at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii. Prior to returning to Richardson in the fall of 2008, she was a professor at the UCLA School of Law – the first Asian American woman to be tenured at a law school in the US – and Georgetown University Law Center. She specialized in the fields of torts, constitutional law, legal history, feminist theory, Critical Race Theory, and civil rights law. From her earliest academic publications, Matsuda has spoken from the perspective and increasingly used the method that has come to be known as Critical Race Theory. She is not only one of its most powerful practitioners, but is among a handful of legal scholars credited with its origin. Voices from the bottom, Matsuda believes—and critical race theory posits—have the power to open up new legal concepts of even constitutional dimension. Paradoxically, bringing in the voices of outsiders has helped to make Matsuda’s work central to the legal canon. A Yale Law School librarian ranked three of her publications as among the “top 10 most cited law review articles” for their year of publication. Judges and scholars regularly quote her work. She has also published several books, such as Words that Wound: Critical Race Theory, Assaultive Speech, and the First Amendment and We Won’t Go Back: Making the Case for Affirmative Action. Matsuda serves on national advisory boards of social justice organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Asian American Justice Center. By court appointment, she served as a member of the Texaco Task Force on Equality and Fairness, assisting in the implementation of the then-largest employment discrimination settlement in U.S. history. A Magazine recognized her in 1999 as one of the 100 most influential Asian Americans. Refer us to your friends and get a free button or Moleskine notebook! Those who refused to accept this version of America. So, for this final episode, our guest artist/activist is YOU, the listener. I have been gone for a while, but I am back and better than ever. Took some time away with adjusting to the new work lifestyle in the middle of a pandemic and spent time putting all my focus on the 2020 election. Well, the election is done and WE WON, if you aren't sure of who I am referring to, maybe this episode isn't for you :) I brought back all my former students to talk about what it was like voting for this first time, and what the outcome of this election means for them and their future!

We Won't Be Stopped - 08-30-20 PM - Pastor Mullings
Summer Worship Series, Sunday August 30, 2020Under the Sun Series, Week 12, We Won’t Need the Sun Readings for this Week:First Lesson: Isaiah 25:1-9: The Mountain of the Lord in Isaiah’s prophecy describes the joy of living with God in this life and living with him forever in heaven.Psalm 46: Psalm 46 provides comfort for God’s people during difficult times, inspiring Luther’s famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”Second Lesson and Sermon Text: Revelation 21:9-14, 21-26. The Apostle John saw heaven portrayed in various ways in his vision. Here, it is described as a place that needs no sun because God is its light.Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43. Jesus’ parable of the Wheat and the Weeds is both a warning concerning the coming judgment and comfort for those God will welcome into heaven through faith in his Son.Sermon: We Won’t Need the Sun: Revelation 21:9-14, 21-26.The first lesson from Scripture in our “Under the Sun” worship series started in Genesis with the world in darkness, before the sun was even created.Today, we end our summer worship series with the last verses of the Bible that speak about the sun that tell us about a world without the sun. This one is not dark like the world was before light was created. This world is full of the light of God’s glory and his grace. This is heaven where we won’t need the sun.Heaven is a perfect place of God’s promise, and it is also a perfect place of God’s presence and we will live there with God. All who dwell there live in the light of the glory of God, the brilliant, radiant, bright shining glory. This is the reason that heaven does not need a sun. The glory of God has given it light. Sin is gone. Shame is gone. All that is left is the perfect holiness that God has given to us in Jesus, and so we will bask in the full and unveiled glory of God. Pastor Nathan Kassulke

Brian Hollins of BLCK VC joins Nick on a special Crisis Coverage installment to discuss Breaking into VC; Excelling at Goldman Sachs; and the Origin of BLCK VC. In this episode, we cover: Background and path to venture? What was the most surprising thing about venture that you only realized after working in it for awhile? So you've got this great job in venture... Why'd you decide to go back to HBS? Tell us about the origin story of BLCK VC? What are some of the specific activities and programs that BLCK VC is running? On June 4th, BLCK VC held an event, “We Won't Wait”, for people in venture to take action. What were the primary goals and outcomes of the event? I want to talk a bit about your experience at Goldman... did you have an opportunity to invest in black and/or underrepresented founders? What, if anything, did Goldman do to support black investors and founders? It's so hard breaking into this industry and orders-of-magnitude harder when you're black -- how have diversity issues and racial profiling affected your professional journey? Can you give us your take on the current social unrest and what path you want to see going forward? Do you think we'll see the systemic changes required this time or do you think progress will be limited? Who are some investors, founders or people in the space you see paving the way and driving change? What can white VCs do, specifically, to contribute to more better balance and stronger representation for black founders and investors? What organizations do you care about? What are sites or resources that our audience can visit to get more involved? Aspen Fellowship... At New Stack we're rolling out a fellowship program to train young, college students in VC... you're back on a college campus... what are some ways that we can get our job description in front of more black, latin and underrepresented minority students? Are there any national organizations or communities for college-aged, black students that are interested in tech? 3 Data Points... Let's say you are approached to invest in an enterprise SaaS business. The startup has $10M ARR, Growing 10% MoM and LTV:CAC is 4:1. Catch is you can only ask 3 questions (for 3 additional data points) to make your decision. What 3 questions do you ask? Yossi Klein Halevi is someone I have wanted to interview for a while now. I immensely enjoyed his newest book, “Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor,” and felt it was a developed emotional and political expression of thoughts from my own two summers of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. So I was thrilled when he agreed to do an interview at his home (a place that overlooks Arab East Jerusalem, something he has written about beautifully in Letters). The book is a New York Times bestseller, and is now out in a second edition with the responses of “neighbors” — Palestinians and Arabs from around the West Bank, Gaza, and around the world. He is also the author of three critically acclaimed books, "Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist," "At The Entrance to The Garden of Eden," and "Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers Who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation." The interview begins with Klein Halevi’s thoughts on Israel’s current political gridlock, then moves to the role of religion in both the Israeli and Palestinian narratives of the conflict. In the second half, we focus on Klein Halevi’s political development, beginning with the influence of his parents as Holocaust survivors and involvement in far-right youth movements as a teenager, and his transition to centrist politics later in life. I really enjoyed Klein Halevi’s balance of empathy and emotion with hard-hitting political analysis. I hope you take a listen! _________________________________________________ Link to “Letters to My Palestinian Neighbors”: https://www.amazon.com/Letters-Palestinian-Neighbor-Yossi-Halevi/dp/006284492X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=37AOMO8HP04MW&keywords=letters+to+my+palestinian+neighbor&qid=1581272753&s=books&sprefix=letters+to+my+pa%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C320&sr=1-1 The song by “The Who” called “We Won’t Get Fooled Again”: https://youtu.be/UDfAdHBtK_Q The short film Yossi Klein Halevi produced decades ago about his survivor parents and their influence on him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhG7bqINntU Favorite podcast: “Everybody Assumes” (!)
