A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter's past, present, and future has always embodied music. From church Boy choirs at the age of six to the American Boy choir school in Princeton to the University of North Texas on a vocal jazz scholarship, Walter has become a pioneer of improvisation and electronic innovations in the world of jazz. His recording career spans 20 years and his purist progressive approach to jazz music has been recognized worldwide. After extended studies in Amsterdam with Jazz vocal Icon, Deborah Brown, Walter returned to the U.S. and embedded himself in the New York Jazz scene. It was in New York, surrounded by visionaries of jazz, where he began to organically develop his liberated, vibrant style that turned him from straight-ahead to progressive jazz singing. The latest album, released on February 7, 2020, testifies to his personal progression as an evolving artisan and provides an intimate, inventive collection of standards and originals. “Dressed in a Song,” produced by Walter and Grammy-winning producer and A&R executive Al Pryor, features piano and vocal duets and trios with veterans and up-and-comers alike, including Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marc Cary, Taylor Eigsti, Julius Rodriguez, Ben Wolfe, Obed Calvaire, and Becca Stevens. Over the decades, Walter has performed as a featured artist at numerous American jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America as well as over 80 tours in Russia. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 24, 2022 48:30

Titres joués, extraits de l'album d'Afriquatuors - Ballaké, chant Sekouba Bambino - Stabat Mater, chant Tina Kloutse  - Suite Lettre 1, chant Ballou Canta, Sam Mangwana - Amour Madidina, chant Ballou Canta. Titres joués extraits de l'album Louverture - Louverture - The Letter - Trayison Feat. Jowee Omicil - Bones Feat. Marc Nammour. ► Album  Louverture (Sans sucre records/L'Autre Distribution 2022).

Tonight's Jazz Feature is a new voice on the big baritone saxophone. His name is Jason Marshall. He is an "in your face" player with a huge deep sound and tons of technique and facility to get around the big horn. He has had great teachers like Hamiet Bluiett, Ronnie Cuber and Gary Smulyan. His inspiration comes from listening long and hard to Bruce Johnson, Leo Parker and Nick Brignola and of course Pepper Adams. Jason has a concept all his own and plays with deep respect for the great Jazz tradition of melodic and swinging improvisation.. He is backed on this quartet date by Marc Cary on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass and the great Willie Jones III on drums. This rhythm section can't miss! Enjoy this wonderful album by some of the young veterans of Jazz and Jason Marshall, a great new baritone saxophone voice. "New Beginnings" is tonight's Jazz Feature and it comes from the Cellar Live label thanks to producer Jeremy Pelt and Cory Weeds.

In this episode of The Working Artist Project, Darrian Douglas and Gregory Agid talk to Curtis Nowosad about his career, "jazz fame" and immigration. 100 years after the Harlem Renaissance shook the world, there's a whole new cultural and spiritual awakening in that corner of the jazz world. A key player in galvanizing this fresh and dynamic sense of cultural awareness, drummer/composer Curtis Nowosad has been a major force in The Harlem Sessions, organized by renowned pianist Marc Cary. Having made his home in Harlem since 2013, the Canadian native emerges as a powerful musical force for social justice on a groundbreaking self-titled jazz and blues-driven collection that illuminates past and present history while creating some profound history of its own. Co-produced with Cary, it is his first collection to feature the explosive and intuitive chemistry of his NY-based ensemble that has held court in NYC everywhere from Smalls to The Jazz Standard to The Blue Note and full week residencies at Dizzy's Club at JALC. Curtis laid the foundation for this current release with two previous critically acclaimed collections, his debut The Skeptic & the Cynic and the WCMA-winning and JUNO-nominated Dialectics, which made DownBeat Magazine's “Best of 2015” list. A remix project, titled CNRMXD, will be released in late 2022. Curtis has played in the bands of trumpeter Philip Harper, trombonist Craig Harris, saxophonist and vocalist Braxton Cook and Cary (who both make major contributions to the album) while headlining major jazz festivals in the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has also played with five NEA Jazz Masters: Candido Camero, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Owens, Ron Carter and Kenny Barron. He is an endorser of Canopus Drums.

@Marc Cary Marc Cary - Piano, Fender Rhodes, Dave Smith Prophet 12, Dave Smith Mopho, Octatrak, Genome Sequencer(IoS), Lemur Mapping (IOs), UAD processing Diego Joaquin Ramirez - Canopus Neo Vintage drums, Vic Firth sticks, Remo heads, Zildjan Cymbals. “No matter how good you get — if you don't listen, then it's nothing because listening is 99% of what we do” Jazz pianist Marc Cary shares the wisdom he's gained from years as a professional musician in his latest album Life Lessons. The first lesson he shares is that in order to truly understand jazz, you have to dig deep — real deep. The roots of this music go back farther than American history — across the ocean, and across continents even. All great musicians were influenced by the places they traveled and the sounds they heard, especially from indigenous groups. Marc opens up about his own Native American ancestry and how his music was influenced by their sound and turbulent history. In addition to his fascination with and influence from indigenous music, Marc's compositions are also quite lyrical, no doubt impacted by his time spent with vocalists like Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. Marc laughs about the time Abbey Lincoln told him it was alright if he couldn't make her gigs once in a while so he could pursue his own interests — and then fired him the first time he said he was unavailable. While that year-long hiatus from her band may have disgruntled him at first, it propelled him to record his first album as a bandleader, for which he was grateful. His latest album Life Lessons includes two Abbey Lincoln songs, “It Was Supposed to Be Love” and “Learning to Listen,” where Marc opens up about the issue of domestic abuse and why listening is essential to making music. Listen to the full Bite-Size Jazz interview with pianist Marc Cary about his new album Life Lessons to learn more about his passion for indigenous music, the inspiration behind songs like “Not a Good Day to Die,” and his collaboration with artists like Roy Hargrove and Abby Lincoln. Brooklyn based trumpeter Satish Robertson is a musician who wears many hats. His horn soars in a variety of musical settings from jazz to gospel, neo-soul, hip-hop, funk, right down to the blues. His credits include live performances and/or recordings with heavy hitters across several genres such as James Carter, Marc Cary, Spirit of Life Ensemble, Deborah Davis, Ace Clark, Chazmere, Talib Kweli, The NYC Ska Orchestra, Bobby Kyle & the Administers, and Archie Bell of the Drells. He is also the leader of numerous exciting jazz groups of his own. Growing up in Jersey City, NJ, Satish developed a deep love of music early on thanks to his grandmother's extensive record collection. He began his musical studies on piano as a child, but after falling under the spell of Miles Davis, he gravitated towards trumpet at the age of 20. Trumpeters Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Roy Hargrove would also become strong influences. Partly self taught, but also mentored by master trumpeters such as Rob Henke, Vinnie Cutro, Jeremy Pelt, Eddie Henderson, Duane Eubanks, and the late Ted Curson, Satish has developed a commanding, penetrating, and soulful voice on his horn. Satish is also a prolific composer whose writing often exhibits a striking cinematic quality. And with his new release 80's JOINT: THE EP, Satish shows yet another side of his vast artistry, fusing jazz with the synth heavy sounds of 1980's pop, rock, funk, R&B, and techno - composing, arranging, producing, and playing nearly all of the instruments on the record himself.

The History... Ever since there was electricity in the form of airwaves, the world has sought to communicate and project thoughts, feelings, and vibrations, with the hope of a worthy recipient on the opposite end to absorb the message. Conventional radio, originally broadcasted via towers and transmitters, became a current which could be felt and interpreted with wire antennae. This medium, often commercially driven, lucrative, and at times corrupt in practice saw its ascent, peak, and the beginning of its decline all during the 20th century. Then… the current went underground. The desire and need to be free of a federally controlled, and caste system-like monopoly gave birth to an assortment of alternative means for one to be heard. The advent of coaxial cable, fiber optics, and data flowing through phone lines revolutionized the way information, and more importantly, music… was sent and received. The Soul made a breakthrough. The Future… Satellite, cable and now Internet radio, while different in their applications, yet similar in intent, have slain the all-encompassing ogre and put the power back into the hands of the people it was meant to serve. YOU! KNOC Radio is the natural progression and brainchild of the people. KNOC (Keep Nourishing Our Communities) has emerged from the rubble to provide a voice for the unheard. Encouragement of individual expression and attentiveness to one’s Soul is the model for the next millennium through quality programs on and offline, artistic endeavors and audio on demand. A nu standard in radio has arrived. My first internet based radio show was called "Eklektika", co-hosted with comedian/filmmaker Kenny Kinds, and afterwards there was "Knocturnal Sunshine", a ray of light in the night, featuring Soul, Acid Jazz, Lounge and more. I buried the show after the passing of a dear friend at the hands of the police, and it is now reborn, infused with healing energy to make the world a better place from my stance of artivism. Indulge in this mix as it blurs genres, color lines, and periods in time....some new, some olde, an exploration at its best. No track list will be put up, if you like a song, Shazzam it, then buy it. That is all...enjoy. (Spoiler alert: Jose James, Fertile Ground, Roni Size, Marc Cary, and a couple of songs regarding the act of kissing all appear here...)

The Kitchen, located in Chelsea, and The Studio Museum in Harlem have a couple of exciting things in common. Both centers herald innovation in the arts. And now both have Hoofers' House--an intimate tap jam session celebrating tap dance on the cutting edge.
