**UkraineGood afternoon and Happy New Year, everyone. From Ukraine, our humanitarian colleagues tell us that attacks intensified during the New Year holiday, causing multiple civilian casualties, including among children and journalists, in several parts of the country. Ukrainian authorities reported more than 50 civilian casualties on 31 December 2022 alone. In the capital, Kyiv, a hotel, residential homes and several education facilities, including a university, were damaged in the latest attacks. Furthermore, two children were injured due to hostilities in Khersonska oblast on 31 December 2022. One of them — a 13-year-old boy — was evacuated to the children's hospital in Kherson, which itself was shelled in the early hours of 1 January, according to the Governor.Intensive fighting also continues in eastern Donetska and Luhanska oblasts, with civilian casualties and civilian infrastructure damage reported on both sides of the front line. Despite continued attacks we, along with our humanitarian partners, continue to deliver support to the people in need in the most impacted communities. On 28 December 2022, an inter-agency convoy delivered food, water, blankets, emergency shelter kits and other supplies from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to the front-line towns of Lyman and Sviatohirsk in Donetska oblast. Both communities have been exposed to heavy fighting, which destroyed houses and critical infrastructure and decimated access to basic services. The people who still live in these areas are mostly the elderly and people with limited mobility.**IsraelWe've been asked recently about the new Government in Israel, and we can say the following: The Secretary-General looks forward to continuing to work closely with the new Government of Israel to advance the work of the United Nations. He reiterates the United Nations' commitment to supporting Israelis and Palestinians to achieve a sustainable peace and return to the path towards a negotiated two-State solution, based on relevant United Nations resolutions, international law and prior agreements.**MyanmarWe've been asked for a comment on the sentencing of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and I can say that the Secretary-General expresses his deep concern over the final verdicts and sentencing of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and reiterates his calls for her immediate release and that of President Win Myint and of all arbitrarily detained prisoners in Myanmar. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the principles of equality before the law, the presumption of innocence, and the right to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, with all the guarantees necessary for a person's defence.**SyriaIn a statement issued yesterday, UN humanitarian leaders urged Security Council members to preserve the cross-border aid lifeline to north-west Syria, warning that without it, millions of people, especially those displaced for years and multiple times, will not have access to food and shelter. UN Security Council resolution 2642 (2022), which allows for aid to be delivered to north-west Syria from across the Turkish border, is set to expire next week. In 2022, UN agencies and partners delivered aid from across the Turkish border, reaching an average of 2.7 million people every month.**LebanonIn response to questions we have been receiving, we can confirm that on 31 December (2022), the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Maritime Task Force assisted the Lebanese Armed Forces-Navy with a search-and-rescue operation relating to a boat in distress off the northern coast, between Beirut and Tripoli. Despite the challenging conditions, the Maritime Task Force and the Lebanese Navy were able to rescue 232 people although, sadly, one child and a woman died.**ColombiaOver the weekend, we issued a statement in which the Secretary-General welcomed the announcement by the President of Colombia of the six-month ceasefire with armed groups, a development that brings renewed hope for comprehensive peace to the Colombian people as the New Year dawns. The Secretary-General said he trusts that adherence to these commitments will reduce violence and the suffering of conflict-affected communities, while helping to build confidence in ongoing dialogues. We also issued statements on the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and the gas tanker explosion in Bokburg, South Africa.

*) Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi gets 4 year sentence Myanmar's ousted leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Win Myint were each sentenced to four-years each on charges of incitement and violations of a law on natural disasters. Zemmour, who's been dubbed 'France's Donald Trump', promises a "reconquest" against what he called "decades of decline". The 63-year-old evoked the historic period, when Christian forces drove Muslim rulers from the Iberian peninsula in Spain and Portugal. And finally… *) Pope calls on govts to stop using migrants as pawns Pope Francis is calling on governments to stop using migrants as pawns in international politics.

Today's Agenda 1)  Belarus:  The Belarus Air-force just forced down a civilian jet,  owned by Irish company RyanAir.  European governments are calling it a State Hijacking.  On board was a 26 yr old Belarus political dissident and journalist named Roman Protase-Vich.  He was hauled off the plane and arrested in Minsk, Belarus.    Can a state legally use Military Jets to bring down a dissident? 2)  Israel and Palestine:  US Sec of State Tony Blinken was in Jerusalem yesterday meeting w/ all parties to the dispute over recent Gaza rocket attacks.  He stated in a press conference that the US is committed to a two-state solution to provide independent states for Jewish and Israeli citizens. Is this a change from the Trump Administration policy?3) Wuhan Institute of Virology: The WIV  is a ultra high level bio-safety lab in Wuhan, China, where the COVID outbreak first occurred.  The Chinese have since Jan 2020 vigorously denied that the lab might have been the source of the original outbreak.  But Wall Street Journal this week issued a series of articles suggesting that the lab leak idea may be more than just a 'conspiracy theory'.  What do you think?  4)   Burma/ Myanmar:  The leader of the political opposition Aung San Suu Kyi, appeared in court along w/ President Win Myint.  She had not been seen since the military coup took place on Feb 1st, which overthrew her as State Counselor/Prime Minister.  The coup was motivated by Ms. Suu Kyi's strong showing in the recent election where she won over 80 percent of votes, which would have given her another 5 yr term.  Instead, she is looking at a 2 yr prison term.  What's going on?Turning Your Dream Smile Into Reality We are proud of the service we provide at Planes Dental Arts. Today on The Leaders' Brief - As the Myanmar coup heads towards completing two months, the European Union imposed sanctions on 10 of Myanmar's military leaders, this week. Two giant military conglomerates were also blacklisted by the 27 member bloc. The decision, in line with sanctions imposed by the USA, and the UK, will include asset freezes and visa bans and is likely to impact the Tatmadaw's treasury. The country's military has arrested several elected leaders including President Win Myint and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, calling the last election results fraudulent.  Syria is preparing to hold its second presidential elections since a civil war broke out in the country in 2011. The previous election held in 2014 had seen president Bashar al-Assad win an overwhelming 92% of votes. However, the country's opposition along with the USA and the EU had dismissed the elections as undemocratic and illegitimate. Since then, aided by Russian military interventions and declining western influence in the region, Mr Assad has been able to amass unparalleled power and is expected to win another term in May.  The Bank of England and the Treasury has announced a task force to explore the possibility of a central bank digital currency. The announcement comes a day after British finance minister Rishi Sunak told the Bank to look at the case for a new 'Britcoin', aimed at tackling some of the challenges posed by cryptocurrencies. The task force would be jointly led by the Bank's deputy governor for financial stability, Sir Jon Cunliffe, and the Treasury's director general of financial services, Katharine Braddick.  About egomonk: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedInegomonk is a global intelligence platform delivering asymmetric outcomes by bringing organizations closer to the communities they want to serve and the leaders they wish to influence.

Today on The Leaders' Brief - Despite a military government threatening protestors thousands continued to flood streets in Myanmar, demanding the release of all civilian leaders including Ang San Suu Kyi, a month after she was detained. Myanmar has flared up in protests since February 1st after the country's military or Tatmadaw detained all civilian leaders including President Win Myint and leader of the National League for Democracy Aung San Suu Kyi. Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on two members of the military junta. Lieutenant General Moe Myint Tun and General Maung Maung Kyaw, and warned of more action if the military leader failed to restore the country's civilian government.  Despite increasing rivalry between Asian giants China and India, Beijing was New Delhi's biggest trading partner for the year 2020, according to figures recently released by the Indian Commerce Ministry. Last year, the two Asian neighbours engaged in a tense military standoff at the Indo-China border in Ladakh for months with both sides suffering casualties. They countries agreed to disengage troops recently after at least nine rounds of talks. The military standoff also coincided with a decision by New Delhi to ban over 200 Chinese applications, including popular video-sharing app TikTok, and popular battle royale game PUBG mobile.  Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's meeting with US President Joe Biden last week set the tone for several key areas of partnership between the two countries, including climate change but no major discussions on the Keystone XL pipeline was recorded. The US President had earlier put a hold on cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline, a 1,179-mile long pipeline running from the oil sands of Alberta, Canada, to Steele City, Nebraska citing climate concerns. The decision has however sparked renewed interest in shipping Canadian oil-sands crude by rail to the USA, and bilateral partnerships between companies operating in the two countries can be expected in the near future leading to an increase in Canadian crude exports.  About egomonk: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedInegomonk is a global intelligence platform delivering asymmetric outcomes by bringing organizations closer to the communities they want to serve and the leaders they wish to influence. On the morning of 1 February 2021, democratically elected members of Myanmar's ruling party, the National League for Democracy, were deposed by the Tatmadaw—Myanmar's military. The Tatmadaw proclaimed a year-long State of Emergency, declared power had been vested in Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing and declared the results of the November 2020 general election invalid. President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi were detained, along with ministers, their deputies and members of Parliament, and other prominent political leaders and activists. Myanmar's new military government has blocked access to Facebook as resistance to Monday's coup surged amid calls for civil disobedience to protest the ousting of the elected civilian government and its leader Aung San Suu Kyi.Facebook is especially popular in Myanmar and the ousted government had commonly made public announcements on the social media site.Internet users said the disruption began late Wednesday night, and mobile service provider Telenor Myanmar confirmed in a statement that mobile operators and internet service providers in Myanmar had received a directive from the communications ministry to temporarily block Facebook.Telenor Myanmar, which is part of the Norwegian Telenor Group, said it would comply, though was concerned the order was a breach of human rights."Telecom providers in Myanmar have been ordered to temporarily block Facebook. We urge authorities to restore connectivity so that people in Myanmar can communicate with family and friends and access important information," said a Facebook spokesperson. The political party ousted in Monday's coup and other activists in Myanmar have called for a campaign of civil disobedience to oppose the takeover. In the vanguard are medical personnel, who have declared they won't work for the military government and who are highly respected for their work during the coronavirus pandemic that is taxing the country's dangerously inadequate health system. For a second night Wednesday, residents in Yangon engaged in "noise protests," with people banging pots and pans and honking car horns under cover of darkness. And the recent protests have revived a song closely associated with the failed 1988 uprising against military dictatorship. Myanmar was under military rule for five decades after a 1962 coup, and Suu Kyi's five years as leader is its most democratic period.Videos posted on social media showed medical personnel especially turned out to sing the song "Kabar Makyay Bu" — or "We Won't Be Satisfied Until the End of the World" — which is sung to the tune of "Dust in the Wind," a 1977 song by the U.S. rock group Kansas. The protest movement seemed to have gotten a boost from the government's treatment of the highly popular Suu Kyi, who was detained along with other government leaders on Monday. Her party said Wednesday she was being charged with possessing illegally imported walkie-talkies — believed to be used by her bodyguards — that were found in her house in the capital Naypyitaw,The charge would allow her to legally be kept in custody until at least Feb. 15. The ousted President Win Myint is being held on a separate charge. Suu Kyi is believed to remain under house arrest at her residence, where she was kept after the army detained her.The charge against Suu Kyi carried a penalty of up to three years in prison.

Today on The Leaders' Brief - Moments before Mynamar resumed its parliament session yesterday for the first time since its elections in November last year, president Win Myint and state councillor and de facto leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi was detained by state military officials, who later declared a year-long emergency in the country. Myanmar has been battling autocracy ever since it formally gained independence in 1948.  Almost 5,000 people have been arrested in various parts of Russia for protesting against the arrest of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who was detained by state police after landing in Moscow on January 17th. Navalny's wife Yulia has, however, been released after briefly being detained. More violence is expected in the country today as a large section of Russian citizens heed to calls from Navalny's team. The United Arab Emirates has decided to amend its citizenship policies to allow citizenship benefits to select group of foreigners. The move is in variation with the UAE's citizenship policies that seldom allow naturalizations due to the number of benefits the country provides for its citizens. Interestingly, a majority of workers in the UAE are foreign nationals and do not enjoy citizenship benefits that include low taxes and reserved jobs among several other welfare benefits.  About egomonk: Website | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedInegomonk is a global intelligence platform delivering asymmetric outcomes by bringing organizations closer to the communities they want to serve and the leaders they wish to influence.
