In 2023, Gallup reported that America's confidence in major institutions such as banking, education, religion, and government was historically the lowest it has ever been. Like a see-saw, trust has been declining for decades but there was always enough trust in the older or youngest generations to keep the see-saw somewhat balanced and institutions funded and functional. As confidence has steadily declined, some have said that the see-saw is finally tipping with more generations distrusting than ever. It isn't helping that Gen Z has been watching evidence of institutions mismanagement in real time online and in social media.  With so much speculation around Gen Z, I wanted to bring on Matthew Weiss, a Marine Corps Intelligence officer, Gen Z, and author of the book “We Don't Want You Uncle Sam” to help us understand what Gen Z is really asking. Through the lens of his motivations for personal service, as well as connections to peers and his previous experience with a cutting-edge defense technology company, his book has sparked conversations on the highest levels.  Final Credit song is "I'll See You Someday", written, produced, and performed by military teen Harlan Adams.   This podcast is based on the book Military Culture Shift by clinical consultant and SME on military family culture, Corie Weathers.  Order your copy of Military Culture Shift https://militaryfamilybooks.com/products/military-culture-shift-by-corie-weathers Listen to Corie's Lifegiver Podcast https://corieweathers.podbean.com/ Find out more about how you can work with and contact Corie https://www.corieweathers.com

Today, recruiters are struggling to bring enough Zoomers into the armed services. Mismatched fundamental ideals, divergent beliefs about the workplace, and other sociocultural influences have contributed to the United States military scrambling to get a grasp on how to appeal to Gen Z.  A Marine and MBA, Matthew Weiss discusses his thoughts on the recruiting mismatch. Through the use of personal life stories and macro analysis, this book explains why military recruiting in the United States is at an all-time low in order to suggest ways that American society and its leaders can fix this issue. We must rebuild the value proposition of military service by  demonstrating the benefits of the world's greatest physical social network.  Weiss talks with host Jim Fausone about recruiting today.

Hello and welcome to a special episode of the North Carolina Food and Beverage podcast. I'm your host Max Trujillo and this week, we took the show on the road!  We ventured to Peachland, NC to visit Jon G's BBQ. On this journey, I hopped in the SUV with former guest and recurring guest co-host Kyle Sutton of Bestow Baked Goods. This was Kyle's brainchild of an episode - which was a thoughtfully planned out tailgate party in anticipation of enjoying some of the best brisket in the state - Jon G's BBQ.  Along for the ride are fellow BBQ enthusiasts Curtis Bradley and Luke Minogue who added great content for the trip.  Matthew Weiss sadly wasn't able to attend, so we saved some brisket on our journey back home. What I found to be really interesting, is a tailgate at an NC bbq joint is a slice of Americana most people are unaware of. Kyle did more than enough by assembling breakfast dishes that included memphis style dry runner smoked wings, a savory bread budding, brownies and cold brew coffee. And because he's a professional and knew there'd be a huge gathering of other BBQ lovers, he actually brought enough to share with dozens of people.  This episode, available both as an audio podcast and on our YouTube station, take you behind the scenes of what it takes a master at the helm of his craft - Jon G himself - or better know as Garren Kirkman. Who joined up with us when we arrived at 8am to discuss his craft and how we created Jon G's BBQ.  We will get into a celebrity wedding he catered, his type of smoker of choice, wood choice, heck, even the salt and pepper he uses.  There's a lot of fun BBQ nerd talk so sit back and let the smoke fill your ears. Born in Philadelphia, 1984; Matthew was raised by his mother, a doll sculptor, and his step-father, a jazz pianist. He studied clarinet, piano, drums, guitar and voice, but his favourite instrument was a Roland Groovebox 303 his step-father bought for him as a birthday gift.

Matthew attended Sarah Lawrence College for Musical Composition and Theory, where, as a freshman, he became the head sound technician. His job required recording and rendering all the concerts held on campus. While Matthew loved writing music, he soon discovered he loved recording music even more.
In 2005, Matthew left school to pursue his interests as a recording engineer. In 2007 he took up a job at Studio E in Philadelphia, where he recorded overdubs for the Grammy Nominated album “The Othello Syndrome” by Uri Caine. Matthew worked as an in house engineer until 2010 when he decided to begin freelancing. From that point his focus shifted from recording work to mixing.
Between 2010 to 2016 he worked with high profile clientele such as Ronnie Spector, Arrested Development, SisQo', Sonny Digital, and Dizzee Rascal. In 2013, Matthew mixed the album “Rosso” by King Midas which won the Norwegian Spellemann Award for Best Rock Album: 2013.
Matthew moved to Los Angeles in 2016 where he partnered with Kanye West's engineer Andrew Dawson running a commercial recording studio. A year later, Weiss became a technical consultant for the construction of a recording studio owned by multi-platinum recording artist Akon. Recognizing Matthew's talent, Akon asked him to be his personal recordist and mixing engineer. In 2019, Matthew received a Platinum plaque for engineering “Comentale” by Ozuna and Akon.

Matthew has recorded and mixed four albums and hundreds of B-sides with Akon. He has also mixed for artists Swae Lee, Jeremih, Chris Brown, Tory Lanez, Nicky Minaj, Becky G, Anitta, Rick Ross, Farruko, and Ozuna. “My business should be for my life. My life should not be my business.” Matthew Weiss is a Lawyer who graduated from Hofstra Law School in 1984. He’s one of Hofstra Law School graduates who landed a job in New York State Court of Appeals — New York’s highest court. Weiss co-founded Weiss & Associates, a law firm focused on vehicle and traffic law. Despite being a lawyer, he then became a filmmaker. He’s like anybody else who got a perfect career but still wanted to do something they are more passionate about. Matthew tried to make more time for himself and not just for the business. After talking to a banker friend, he then found himself wanting to film the story of Welles Crowther, the man who saved ten lives when the 9/11 attack happened. He fell in love with filmmaking. He filmed and produced Welles Crowther’s story titled Man In Red Bandana, which took him six years to film & produce the documentary without even having exceptional knowledge about filmmaking. “If you’re interested in sharing stories, make sure you’re passionate about it. Make sure you do it because you want people to hear the story, not because you’re making money.” It’s always that passion of wanting to share stories that make someone contented and happy, not just the mere idea of money. Most successful people follow their passion and money just comes as a bonus. If money is your gauge why you’ll do what you want to do, once you see no figures coming your way, you’ll stumble and eventually give up. It is important to start but begin with the right purpose & clear vision. “Continue being involved with a higher purpose. Things that will outlive you that is bigger than you and I guarantee you, you won’t regret it, and it will make you a happier person.” There is always a purpose why we live. We weren’t born by accident. And as we come to know what that bigger purpose is, continue to live it out and learn from it as people learn from you as well. Nothing is more fulfilling than being passionate and happy about what you do. It’s a hundred times better than forcing ourselves to do something that produces a significant amount of money but does not make us happy. In this interview, Matthew shared how important it is to live according to your passion and purpose. Matthew’s story is inspirational and this episode is definitely worth a listen! Max Trujillo and Felicia Perry Trujillo are a power couple in the North Carolina Food Scene, even though they've only been in Raleigh for less than five years. But Max was working 70-hour weeks that weren't great for family life, and Felicia was starting to get burnout from weddings, so they both decided to make a change. Felicia started Food Seen, a niche photography, videography, social media, and web design company for the Food and Linen industries. Go check them out, they do incredible work! And later, Max (with his co-host Matthew Weiss) started the NC F&B Podcast (North Carolina Food & Beverage), where he gets to talk to local chefs, sommeliers, and other experts in the food and beverage industry. "He wasn't trapped, he chose to stay and help others." Matthew Weiss, Esq. was a lawyer. He didn't seek an opportunity to become a filmmaker; but a story that needed to be told found him. The story of Welles Crowther was shared with him over lunch one day: On September 11, 2001, Welles was 24 and worked in the World Trade Center. The acts of heroism he displayed that day have inspired song lyrics, parents to name their children after him and President Obama's dedication speech for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Matt created the documentary Man in Red Bandana to inspire the world to be more selfless. Today, Matt shares about the heroic final hour of Welles's life + how we can learn to live more inspired through the example of the "man in the red bandana." SHOW NOTES:  Matt Weiss directed Man in Red Bandana, a documentary that tells the story of Welles Crowther, a young American who became a hero at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Follow on Facebook at: Facebook.com/ManInRedBandana Watch it on iTunes or Amazon. Matt was a lawyer, inspired by a story. He spent his time and money turning Welles story into a film so the world might learn to be more selfless. Matt is an entrepreneur and is inspired by entrepreneurs like Elon Musk [Tesla], Jeff Bezos [Amazon] & Simon Sineck [Start with Why]. On Sept. 11, 2001, Welles put out fires, carried a woman down 17 flights of stairs, went back up + saved the lives of 18 people.   10,000+ people ran / left the building. It's incredible he stayed.   "He wasn't trapped, he chose stay and to help others." 9/11 was his finest hour, but he spent his life putting others first. This story will inspire people to be more selfless. "Even just small acts like holding the door open for someone behind you; wait a little longer and hold the door open for them." No one who knew him was surprised that he stayed to help others. Welles's parents + the Michigan foundation created the Red Bandana Project in his honor.  MATTHEW WEISS'S LIVE INSPIRED 7  1.
