"GRIEVING IN THE DOLLS HOUSE"David Johansen passed away peacefully at home on February 28, holding the hands of his wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah, in the sunlight surrounded by music and flowers. After a decade of profoundly compromised health he died at the age of 75. David and his family were deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support they've experienced recently as the result of having gone public with their challenges.  He was thankful that he had a chance to be in touch with so many friends and family before he passed. He knew he was ecstatically loved."My mother and I would like to thank everyone for the fathomless love and support you've all shown us since we went public with David's diagnosis. We were able to make the last few weeks of David's life with us as serene and anxiety free as possible. As well as alleviating some of our more pressing material concerns, this campaign did make David feel profoundly connected. He really did feel the love from everyone. For the time being we will leave the fund open to contributions, to continue to pay off the debts accrued during David's long illness. We will share details about memorials and tributes soon. There will be several events celebrating David's life and artistry, details to follow.Thank you so much for the …LUVLove,Leah and Mara"THE GTO'S -"PERMANENT DAMAGE"- THEIR LONE VINYL FOOTPRINT"HARDLY A CHEAP TRICK"These seven young women left a permanent mark upon my perceptions of the feminine equation and artistic desires during what was known as the 60's Summer of Love. So much to ponder about these girls who just wanted to have fun. They left a legacy which when viewed through the lens of  artistic achievement, made them the first female Punk Rockettes. When the testimony is placed under the microscope of human triumph, destiny betrayed them. They were the creation of a time (The 1960's) and a place (Laurel Canyon) where  history tells us that the possibilities of inclusion could make a groupie as appreciated as Joni Mitchell.Frank Zappa knew better.Frank understood the nature of Permanent Damage. The most famous and successful of the GTOs is Miss Pamela, currently Pamela Des Barres, author of the groupie-memoir I'm With The Band. Des Barres's new book, Let's Spend the Night Together, a collection of interviews with fellow rock groupies, was released on July 1, 2007. Miss Mercy's 'biography' was expanded at length within the chapter entitled, "Miss Mercy's Blues". Also within the book, Des Barres notes that Miss Cynderella died in 2007 under mysterious circumstances. Miss Christine died on November 5th, 1972, of an overdose in a hotel room, after spending close to a year in a full body cast to correct her crooked spine. Miss Lucy died of an AIDS-related disease in the early 1990s. During her time as a GTO, Sandra became pregnant by Zappa's resident artist, Calvin Schenkel, and had a daughter named Raven. Miss Sandra later moved back to San Pedro and eventually Italy with her new husband and three children. She died of cancer on April 23, 1991. Miss Sparky is still alive, but not much has been divulged of her post-GTO's endeavours. In Circular Circulation, They Circle Continuously.- Rich Buckland

On episode 55, Greg is joined by the iconic and amazingly talented multihyphenate MICHAEL DES BARRES!!!Michael Des Barres' arrival in the entertainment world came early – as a Marquis attending boarding school in England, he first started acting at age eight in commercials and school plays. He later moved on to Corona Theatre School in West London where he was cast in the 1967 classic film To Sir With Love, starring Sidney Poitier. At nineteen, Michael played the androgynous rock star Rose in the nude musical The Dirtiest Show In Town, produced by Robert Stigwood, of Jesus Christ Superstar fame. Andrew Lloyd Webber saw Michael's performance and went backstage to tell Michael that he should indeed form a real rock band. Michael quickly wrote his first song titled “Will You Finance My Rock and Roll Band” which he performed for Lloyd Webber, that song lead Michael to form Silverhead, his first band, a raucous glam rock experiment. They were immediately signed to Purple Records in 1972. In 1974 Michael married his girlfriend of seven years actress Wendy Hamilton (Professor Emeritus Wendy Wheeler, London Metropolitan University). After two albums and two world tours Silverhead disbanded and Michael moved to Los Angeles broke and in love with Pamela Miller "Miss Pamela" of the GTO's, he arrived in L.A. with two hundred dollars and a hair dryer, ending his marriage to Wendy Hamilton. Michael married Pamela Des Barres, author of “I'm With The Band” in 1977. Michael and Pamela amicably divorced in 1991 and have one son, Nicholas Dean Des Barres. In Los Angeles Michael formed the band Detective. Detective was signed to the famed Swan Song Records by Jimmy Page and recorded two albums. That era also saw Michael appear on U.S. television in the sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati with Detective playing the punk rock group Scum of the Earth. Michael's character, Dog was featured throughout the episode and the band itself played at the end of the show. The members of Detective went their separate ways in 1979. Throughout the years of Silverhead and Detective Michael had been struggling with drugs and alcohol and in 1981 he finally got sober and has remained so. "People didn't understand why I didn't drink or do drugs in the 80's, I was a pariah, but I understood that it was for kids. It was making me psychotic and it was destroying my natural energy. It made me listless and uncreative and I thought that was unacceptable. It was more important to be able to look into my son's eyes and be able to connect with him, than it was to look in the eyes of some lower companion with bad coke." As a result of his sobriety he co-founded R.A.D, Rock Against Drugs, a highly successful P.S.A. that helped enthuse the culture of MTV with an anti-drug status. In 1982 Michael formed the band Chequered Past, featuring Steve Jones, Clem Burke, Nigel Harrison and Tony Sales. The band opened for Duran Duran in 1984, it was this association that led to Michael being chosen to replace Robert Palmer as lead singer of The Power Station when Robert Palmer withdrew. Michael performed with The Power Station in Philadelphia at Live Aid before two billion people after a ten day rehearsal. A highlight of the touring set was Michael's song “Obsession, cowritten with Holly Knight in 1983. At the time, it had been released by the L.A. based New Wave group Animotion and was a number one hit in twenty-seven countries. Michael's love of acting had never subsided and in 1985 he was cast in the role most familiar to his fans – that of...

In this episode we welcome the truly legendary Pamela Des Barres, all the way from her native San Fernando Valley, and invite her to reminisce about the all-girl GTOs, Frank Zappa, Lowell George... and plenty more besides. The bestselling author of 1987's groupie confessional I'm With The Band describes how she entered the Laurel Canyon orbit of ringmaster Zappa, and how the motley troupe he christened Girls Together Outrageously came into being. The former Miss Pamela talks about her fellow "Misses" Mercy and Christine, then describes the sessions for the group's unruly 1969 classic Permanent Damage. This leads on to a discussion of the Groupie phenomenon and its problematic nature in the #MeToo era. In passing, we hear about Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco and 1974's Hollywood Street Revival and Trash Dance show. The somewhat different — yet not entirely unrelated — L.A. domain of the canyon singer-songwriter crowd is considered as we hear clips from co-host Barney Hoskyns' 2003 audio interview with James Taylor/Linda Ronstadt producer Peter Asher. Following discussion of Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell and their mutual paramour John David Souther, we circle back to the GTOs and the guest appearance of the late Jeff Beck on Permanent Damage. We then pay extensive tribute to Beck's eclectic genius and unique technique. We conclude with quotes from notable RBP library additions, including pieces about Bonnie Raitt recording at Bearsville, L.A. session bassist Carol Kaye and apocalyptic jazz trio Comet Is Coming. Many thanks to special guest Pamela Des Barres. Visit her website at pameladesbarresofficial.com for details of her podcast, books and more. Are you looking for an inspiring and uplifting chat about the power of music? Look no further as I welcome Billy Cole to the podcast. Billy's life is all about music, passion and giving back. Over the course of nearly 50 years in the music business, his love of music and music instruments (specifically woodwind and brass instruments) has allowed him to create experiences and memories he now shares in his new book ‘With the Band, Memoirs of a Music Shop Owner'. It truly is a chat not to be missed and provides many, many goosebump moments as well as how music can translate into giving back and connecting with a wider community. During our chat we touched on: · How his music instrument journey started · What his book ‘The Book: With The Band, Memoirs of a Music Shop Owner' is about · What ‘Horns for Haiti' is all about and how it came to life · The power of music and the amazing things that can happen if we trust in it · The first artist he met and fixed the instrument for · More stories of looking after and fixing wind instruments for many more musicians, including Jethro Tull, Hall & Oats, Chicago, etc. · How many amazing humans he met along the way, away from musicians · When he pivoted from a big business with employees to ‘back to basics' with a smaller shop in Saratoga Springs · What does and doesn't happen backstage of a concert · Who he describes as his ‘Angels' and why he sees them as that · Advice for those who think of learning an instrument · The amazing benefits of playing an instrument with others and for others (and fixing instruments, too!) · His take on the power of music · If he has a favourite band, and if so, who it is · Current band and or song he listens to · His take on the current music scene and bands Billy Cole's Biography: At the age of 17 I went to The University of New York at Morrisville where I studied musical Instrument repair. With diploma in hand, I applied for work but found that no music store wanted to hire me. So, I opened my own shop "Cole's Woodwind and Brass" Soon after I married my high school sweetheart Mary Alice. through many serendipitous twists and turns, we raised our family with our little music shop. Today, after 45 years of working on horns, I reflect back with great appreciation for a life that has given so much. In an effort to give back I travelled to the impoverished nation of Haiti in 2016 to teach instrument repair. After returning several times, I founded Horns for Haiti Inc. in 2020, an organization that teaches band instrument repair and how to start your own music business. To date, we've trained dozens of musicians and music teachers how to repair and started two businesses. Billy Shop D'Haiti, Musical Instrument Repair and the Haitian Music Supply Company. Happy Wonder Wednesday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today, I covered S1E12: I'm With The Band, which aired on January 19, 2022. In this episode when Dean loses his position as first chair saxophone in the school band, Bill lays the pressure on him to earn it back. I felt bad for Dean a little bit getting bumped from 1st chair all the way to 4th chair in band, but I had a feeling deep down he was only playing the saxophone to make his Dad happy. He wasn't really putting in the effort and didn't have the passion or drive to put his all into it. I loved the scenes we got at the state fair, it was so cool! It reminded me of my childhood days of the youth fair in my hometown. Join me when I cover the next episode S1E13: Valentine's Day Dance, February 2, 2022. In this episode Dean's plans to ask Keisa to the Valentine's Day Dance are foiled when another boy asks her out first; Bill and Lillian make Kim sign up for a Big Sister program to have extracurricular activities for her college applications. Happy Wonder Wednesday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today, I covered S1E11: Brad Mitzvah, which aired on January 12, 2022. In this episode Brad works through his nerves preparing for his bar mitzvah speech; Dean ends his friendship with Keisa when Charlene tells him he can't be friends with other girls. I really enjoyed this episode. Couldn't stand Charlene and her demands on Dean especially when it came to his friendship with Keisa and felt that it would have been nice to meet Brad's parents since this was about Brad's Bar Mitzvah. We did meet Brad's Aunt Ruth who turns out was a survivor of the Holocaust (Kim takes notice of the letter and number sequence on Aunt Ruth's arm) even though it wasn't mentioned in the episode or explored. I also played some clips from The Wonder Years Season 2 Birthday Boy episode where Paul has his Bar Mitzvah. Join me next week when I cover S1E12: I'm With The Band, which aired on January 19, 2022. Pamela Des Barres is the definitive groupie who moved to Hollywood in the 1960s, embraced free love and hippiedom, and frolicked with musicians like The Who's Keith Moon and The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger. She documented it all in her iconic tell-all book I'm With The Band and she inspired the character Penny Lane in the film Almost Famous. During the waves of feminism that have come since, however, Pamela's candid tales have been criticised, the supposed sexual liberation of the halcyon rock'n'roll days reevaluated.  She sat down with The Last Bohemians in east London record shop Matters Of Vinyl Importance for a controversial insight into her wild past, her thoughts on whether musicians deserve to be idolised, and looks at her groupie history through the lens of the #MeToo movement.
