Abigail sits down with Karyn Fischer, a book coach and past literary agent of Bookstop Literary Agency, to discuss narrative voice and how to differentiate a character's voice in middle grade and young adult novels. If you're writing a middle grade or young adult novel—or you get consistent feedback that something is just “off” with your voice—this episode is for you. Karyn shares specific (and practical) tips that can help you improve your narrative voice, and she even takes a deep-dive into two examples that emphasize when a voice really works, and why it needs to change in order to reflect the age of the protagonist. As a certified Author Accelerator book coach, and a past literary agent with additional experience as a bookseller and book buyer for an indie bookstore (among various other roles in the industry), Karyn knows how to teach writers how to improve their character's voice and prose. I don't want you to miss out! P.S. After you listen to this episode, share it with a writing companion who could use this advice, and don't forget to subscribe to the show and rate/review it so that Abigail can reach more writers like you who want to blend their passion of writing with business. Dennis is joined via Zoom by author Abdi Nazemian (Only This Beautiful Moment) to discuss his previous book Like A Love Story, which is about three high schoolers in the late 1980's who are obsessed with Madonna. Dennis first met Abdi at a queer writers mixer and commented on Abdi's Madonna T-shirt. They discovered they were both big fans of Madge so it made sense to talk for the podcast after they had both seen Madonna's current Celebration Tour. Abdi and Dennis compare notes about the tour and share the moments they found most inspiring and moving. Abdi also talks about how his Madonna obsession inspired the plot of Life a Love Story and how the book ended up being a breakthrough success for him after publishing several other books. Other topics include: Abdi's obsession with old Hollywood, how he got his entire boarding school into Mommie Dearest, what the label "Young Adult Novel" actually means, the time he almost met Madonna as a kid in France, where he was when he heard she'd been hospitalized and the question he'd really like to ask Madonna about the spoken-word section of "Vogue."

If you're writing a character-driven story with a female protagonist, or a female POV character, this episode is a must for you. With only one viewing it's easy to miss the storytelling goodness of Lady Bird because it doesn't offer up the kind of story Hollywood has trained us to expect (i.e., external action, male protagonist, hero's journey-style stories). What it does give is a nuanced, complex female protagonist whose internal conflict drives the story. Jessica Brody is the author of the well-known writing book Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and teaches classes on this writing method, but she has published over 20 books for all ages, including middle grade. Her most recent, titled Amelia Gray is Almost Okay, came out in March of this year. Amelia is a kid who moves around a lot due to her father's job as a hotel renovator and reimaginer. Like a lot of middle schoolers, she is trying to figure out who she is and what she's good at. During one memorable summer in a new town, she decides to try on different personas to see which one fits best. Is she an athlete, a theater kid, or a reporter? What I loved about this book is that I could relate to it even as an adult. I still try different versions of myself sometimes. Jessica talks to us about what words in the English language really get under her skin, how being fired from MGM Studios gave her the writing opportunity she needed, and her overwhelming passion for spreadsheets. The boys are back! (The boys from The Maze Runner series, that is.) Also back for this PMT minisode is host Laura Petro joined by Meggie Gates with a special appearance from Nick Olson for another installment of YA, We Watched It! After reading the entire Maze Runner series for their other podcast and watching the first film, it only makes sense for the team to sit down and dissect the sequel in this franchise (and adaptation of the second book). Will the movie do the book justice? Or will it take some unnecessary liberties that no one saw coming? (hint: it's the latter).

Anita Kharbanda is an Indian-American engineer by trade, and a storyteller by heart. She lives in North Texas with her loving husband and two sons. An avid lifelong reader of all kinds of fiction, she revels in seeing her children do the same. The healing power of letters filled with family history inspired Anita to start writing. She now writes the kinds of stories she's devoured through the years, with one difference. She promised herself she'd write stories about the characters she dreamed of seeing in books growing up, and lift the voices of those who go unheard. Yali Books published her debut YA novel, Lioness of Punjab on September 17, 2022. The story is told from the perspective of Mai Bhago, the first female, Sikh warrior. In this episode we discuss: The inspiration behind her young adult novel, Lioness of Punjab. Some of the takeaways a young adult reader will gain from reading her novel. Her tips & strategies for people that want to write a book. The importance of finding opportunities, in our day, to have quality time with ourselves and our family. Why it is necessary to understand where we come from and for representation, to feel seen and heard, in books, movies, etc. The significance and impact of reading to our children. Laura has once again been inspired to dive into the world of YA fan-fiction! Inspired by the completion of their most recent season of YA, We Read It! where they read The Maze Runner trilogy, comes Welcome to The Glade. A story that exists completely outside the world of the original books (while maintaining the same setting and characters). Instead of a dystopian fight for your life and find a cure for The Flare, the Maze is the setting for television's most popular dating show: Welcome to The Glade. Teresa is about to enter into her very own season of the hit show after being a fan-favorite finalist on a previous season, but even she isn't prepared for what the producers have in store.

And I think it was the first time I was allowed to let myself say, 'Yes, you're trans.'" Plus, S.A. joins us for the conversation and we get into where the idea for this novel came from, as well as queering fairy tales and how Peter Pan can represent a possibility space for queerness and transness. While this film may not be listed among Pixar's Top 10, there's still plenty to love about Turning Red and we need more stories that explore these themes. From a craft perspective, Melanie sees it as a good example of how the beginning of a story sets up the end, and Valerie considers whether the red panda is a metaphor that works.

Author Taryn R. Hutchison shares the exciting stories behind her book One Degree of Freedom, a riveting Young Adult Novel set in Communist Romania. To me, a mark of an excellent novel is that you completely forget you are reading. One Degree of Freedom was such a novel—with nuanced, engaging characters, intricately described setting, and exciting plot, I was entranced from page one. Late 1980s Communist Romania was a fascinating backdrop for the story of Adriana, a fifteen-year-old engineering student who finds a window to the world outside her oppressive regime through reading banned books, an activity which sends her headlong into an adventure filled with intrigue and family secrets. Taryn R. Hutchison wanted to be a writer since she was a child growing up in a small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore--with its 75 people, three million chickens, and her two imaginary friends. She put that on hold to pursue other things she loved, living abroad and visiting a host of countries on every continent except Antarctica. When she returned to the States, she married her favorite person and moved near San Francisco, where she began to pursue that long-ago dream. She wrote her first book, We Wait You, a memoir from her years as a missionary in Eastern Europe. Now she's come full circle—minus the imaginary friends—to live in another sleepy town, this time in western North Carolina. Taryn holds a master's degree in writing and tutors writing at a small university. She has had several short stories, essays, and articles published. She is an Amy Writing award recipient and a member of Redbud Writers Guild. Currently, she's working on two sequels to One Degree of Freedom, along with a non-fiction book—a true story of a prisoner, unfairly condemned and recently released.
