It's Thursday, September 5th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Sudanese conflict has displaced 8 million International Christian Concern reports the body of Christ continues to suffer in Sudan, Africa after civil war broke out in the country last year. The conflict has displaced over eight million civilians, including many religious minorities. Christians are a minority in the northeastern African country and have faced persecution for decades. Both sides in the civil war have targeted Christians through attacks on churches and even killing religious leaders.  The Tahir Institute for Middle East Policy noted, “Muslims who converted to Christianity continued to be prosecuted and tortured, even though the ‘crime' of apostasy officially no longer existed in the statute books.”   Sudan is ranked eighth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  14-year-old Georgia student killed 2 students and 2 teachers A 14-year-old student named Colt Gray opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday morning, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe, reports the Associated Press. The dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour's drive from Atlanta. At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher — were taken to hospitals with injuries. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith became emotional as he spoke during the briefing. SMITH: “I never imagined that I would be speaking to the media in my career over something that happened today, the pure evil that happened today. “This hits home for me. I was born and raised here. I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I'm proud of this school system. “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community, but I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. Love will prevail over what happened today.” The gunman is in custody. African Methodist Episcopal keeps ban against homosexual “marriage” The African Methodist Episcopal Church held its General Conference in Columbus, Ohio last month.  The historically-black denomination, also known as the AME Church, has districts in the U.S. and Africa.  At the recent conference, AME voted to keep its ban on faux homosexual marriage. In contrast, the United Methodist Church voted in favor of such vile passion relationships earlier this year. Since Roe overturned, attacks on pro-life centers have increased The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade back in 2022. Since then, state governments have been increasing their attacks on pro-life groups. Daniel Schmid with Liberty Counsel told The Christian Post, “We saw attacks on pro-life centers significantly occur across the country after Dobbs, and now it has transitioned from criminals who are engaging in vandalism and threats to state efforts, government-backed efforts, to suppress the speech and views and sheer existence of the crisis pregnancy centers.” Pro-life groups are now having to fight for their free speech in states like New York and Massachusetts.  U.S. abortions are up Meanwhile, the number of abortions in the U.S. are up since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The pro-abortion group Society of Family Planning released their latest data. The average number of abortions per month between January and March of this year was 98,990. Chemical abortions are on the rise through virtual visits, allowing doctors to ship abortion kill pills to other states. These so-called “telehealth abortions” averaged nearly 20,000 per month between January and March. In Matthew 15:19-20, Jesus reminds us, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. These are the things that defile a person.” Kamala leads in Wisconsin and Michigan; Trump leads in Arizona CNN released a new poll of voters in six battleground states ahead of the presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris leads in Wisconsin and Michigan. Former President Donald Trump leads in Arizona. The two candidates are nearly tied in Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. However, many voters are undecided. Fifteen percent of respondents across the battleground states said they have not firmly decided their choice for president. Americans are getting more isolated and lonely The Survey Center on American Life released a report on social isolation in the U.S. The report noted Americans are losing touch with their social networks as loneliness and isolation increase. Americans are generally not involved in social groups with the exception of religious ones. Religious organizations draw from both the less educated and the college-educated. Although, those with less education are becoming increasingly unattached.  Also, young adults are also becoming unattached from the church. Only 28% are members of a religious organization compared to 43% of seniors.  Thief steals kids' lemonade stand money And finally, two children from Virginia have become a national example of forgiveness, reports CBN News. Over the heat of summer, 10-year-old Rebecca Caldwell and her 8-year-old brother Joshua opened a lemonade stand in front of their house in Chesapeake.  Sadly, a man dropped by seemingly for a drink, only to make off with the children's earnings of $40.  As the story spread, the Caldwells used it as an opportunity to talk about forgiveness. REPORTER: “Why did you pray for the man who stole your money?” JOSHUA: “Because I wanted him to become a Christian.” Rebecca had this thought. REBECCA: “I just think it's better to forgive than to just to always be mad at the guy, because then you're just always going to think back on the day and be like, ‘Oh, I'm so mad at that guy.'” And their mother, Mrs. Caldwell, weighed in about the importance of forgiveness. MRS. CALDWELL: “We've talked a lot about forgiveness in our interviews, Some people have asked why we choose to forgive. If God can do all this through a lemonade stand, he can do it through anything. He can do the impossible. “We just want people to know that God forgave us. So, we can forgive other people.” In response, the community organized a lemonade event that raised over $6,000 for the kids.  The youngest of 7 siblings, Rebecca and Joshua are giving some to their eldest sibling to fund her missionary trip to Asia.  In Mark 11:25, Jesus said, “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, September 5th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Ralph welcomes Professor Stephanie Luce of the City University of New York, who has co-authored “Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World,” and together they outline the challenges and the strategies that face underdogs trying to change the system. Plus, our resident constitutional scholar, Bruce Fein, joins us to discuss the death of Russian dissident, Alexei Navalny.Stephanie Luce is Professor of Labor Studies at the School of Labor and Urban Studies, and Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center at City University of New York. Professor Luce is best known for her research on living wage campaigns and movements. She is the author of Fighting for a Living Wage and co-author of The Living Wage: Building a Fair Economy, and The Measure of Fairness. Her latest book, co-authored with Deepak Bhargava, is Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World. We find it's actually hard to get people to imagine really liberatory worlds because we're so dominated by corporate culture and consumer culture and undemocratic functioning that it is hard to imagine a world that's different. So even just getting people to dream of a different possibility is a good start, and then we have to think about what kind of power it's going to take to make those changes.Stephanie LuceA lot of people critique [collective care as a strategy]. They think it's just about taking care of one another as part of life—that's what we do. We're arguing it can also be strategic because when done well, it enables people to engage in a fight in the long term. You can't go on strike if you don't have someone to watch your children, or if you don't have a strike fund. You can't risk arrest if you don't know if you have bail. So collective care is a way of taking care of one another, doing the things that enable us to take risks and to know people have our back. And that helps us up our militancy and strategy because we can take bigger risks and build the capacity for other kinds of struggle.Stephanie LuceThere's such a thing as the civic personality that is a huge Achilles' heel of the drive to train people civically. You can train people civically… but if they don't have a civic personality, if they don't have fire in their bellies, so to speak, emotional intelligence, if they don't have a framework of a public philosophy, if they don't have a capacity for resilience to learn from their last mistakes, if they haven't controlled their ego so they can give credit to other people in their circle and set an example and motivate, if they're not willing to read and stay up to date with what's going on in their fields and in the area of their opponents, it doesn't matter how many skills they learn from our efforts.Ralph NaderBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law.  Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.[Alexei Navalny] was free. He knew he could have left [Russia]. He probably could have won a Nobel Peace Prize. He returned anyway. And the pride which I can express in such a human being is beyond words.Bruce FeinIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 2/20/241. A diplomatic row is brewing between Israel and Brazil. On Sunday, leftist Brazilian President Lula compared Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza to Hitler's genocide of the Jews during an address to the African Union. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared that until he retracts his comments, Lula is “persona non grata in Israel.” Yet Lula does not intend to retract these comments, and has instead recalled the Brazilian ambassador to Israel. The Israeli campaign against Gaza has forced nearly all of its over 2 million inhabitants from their homes. This from Reuters.2. On Monday, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights issued a report alleging “credible allegations of egregious human rights violations to which Palestinian women and girls continue to be subjected in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.” According to this report, “Palestinian women and girls in detention have…been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers. At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence…photos of female detainees in degrading circumstances were also reportedly taken by the Israeli army and uploaded online.” Experts say “Taken together, these alleged acts may constitute grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and amount to serious crimes under international criminal law that could be prosecuted under the Rome Statute.”3. The anti-Biden “uncommitted” protest vote campaign in Michigan continues to pick up steam. On Valentine's Day, the New York Times reported that Our Revolution – the Bernie Sanders legacy political operation – has endorsed the campaign. Our Revolution joins other prominent new boosters, such as Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and former Representative Andy Levin. In her video endorsing the campaign, Tlaib says “It is important…not only to march against the genocide, not only make sure we're calling our members of Congress … it is also important to create a voting bloc, something that is a bullhorn to say enough is enough.”4. On February 15th, the African Methodist Episcopal, or AME Church Council of Bishops issued a statement calling for the “Immediate Withdrawal of Financial Support from Israel.” This major step from a prominent Black faith group is an indication that the genocidal Israeli campaign in Gaza is alienating significant factions of the Democratic Party coalition. The statement reads “Since 1954, Israel has shown a willful disregard for the human dignity of Palestinians. Since October 7, 2023, in retaliation for the brutal murder of 1139 Israeli citizens by Hamas, Israel has murdered over 28,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The United States is supporting this mass genocide. Thismust not be allowed to continue. There must be an immediate and permanent ceasefire between these two communities. We call for a solution to be negotiated by genuine representatives of the people of Israel and Palestine and condemn all violence as a means of resolving this conflict. Surely there is a grassroots solution that affirms the dignity and humanity of all God's people in Palestine and Israel. The tools of empire, colonialism, and domination will not solve the problems they created. The cycle of violence between historically wounded peoples will not be dissolved by the creation of more wounds or through weapons of war. We remain in solidarity with Jesus Christ of Nazareth, a Palestinian Jew, and the Prince of Peace. We weep for the suffering being inflicted upon the children of God in the Holy Land and all the earth. We cry for freedom and implore those who say they love God to demonstrate a tangible love for their neighbors. We will travail in prayer and pursue justice until freedom reigns for all.”5. Semafor reports that Pro-Israel groups are engaging in targeted harassment of mainstream American journalists perceived as too critical of Israel. This story focuses on Washington Post foreign correspondent Lousia Loveluck, and documents how SKDK – a D.C. PR firm close to the Biden administration – has dug into Loveluck's background, including unrelated protests she attended before becoming a journalist. While the Washington Post defended Loveluck's reporting, they did not defend her personally – setting a dangerous precedent for intimidation of American journalists by Israel-aligned groups.6. The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that “An embryo created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is a child protected by Alabama's wrongful death act and the Alabama Constitution.” Specifically, the court ruled that the “parents of frozen embryos killed at an IVF clinic when an intruder tampered with an IVF freezer may proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit against the clinic for alleged negligence.” Yet in a broader sense, this means that IVF clinics will be legally liable for the death of embryos fertilized through IVF – likely spelling the end of IVF in the state. This from 1819 News.7. A stunning report from the Center for Climate Integrity, published in the Guardian, reveals that the plastics industry has deliberately misled the public for years, claiming that their products are continuously and sustainably recyclable – all the while knowing that “recycling cannot be considered a permanent solid waste solution [to plastics], as it merely prolongs the time until an item is disposed of”. Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity puts it simply: “The companies lied…It's time to hold them accountable for the damage they've caused.”8. REI, the company given constant adulation by the liberal press, is union busting. From the REI Union SoHo, “On Feb 15, REI announced it will be withholding annual merit pay increases from our store and all unionized [REI] stores across the Co-op.” Unionized workers walked off the job in protest of this blatant anti-union move.9. AP reports Amazon has joined SpaceX and Trader Joe's in arguing that the National Labor Relations Board is unconstitutional. We have discussed this corporate stratagem on this show before and noted that more corporations, particularly those facing unionization efforts, were likely to adopt this legal argument. Seth Goldstein, a lawyer representing the Amazon Labor Union and Trader Joe's United, said “Since [these companies] can't defeat successful union organizing, they now want to just destroy the whole process.”10. Finally, in some positive labor news, Michigan has become the first state in 60 years to overturn its so-called “right to work” law, the Nation reports. Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber is quoted saying “This moment has been decades in the making…By standing up and taking their power back, at the ballot box and in the workplace, workers have made it clear Michigan is and always will be the beating heart of the modern American labor movement.” Beyond overturning right to work, Michigan has also “restored prevailing-wage protections for construction workers, expanded collective bargaining rights for public school employees, and restored organizing rights for graduate student research assistants at the state's public colleges and universities.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church | Strength and Perseverance from the beginning The African American Methodist community in Galveston dates back to 1848 when Gail Borden deeded land on Broadway for a church for the enslaved. Following the Civil War, the congregation changed its affiliation from Methodist Episcopal Church to the African Methodist Episcopal denomination. The church became known in 1867 as Reedy Chapel and in 1868, the St. Paul group divided with one group buying property on Broadway and 38th St. becoming Wesley Tabernacle Church. The Reverend Peter Cavanaugh organized the Church in 1869 as an independent congregation. Church members met in a one room house on Broadway between 38th and 39th Street. As the church grew, the present location was purchased and the house was moved to the site. After losses of church buildings to a fire and the 1900 storm, a one story building was erected in 1924 the church was remodeled by raising the building and constructing a new first floor. The new construction gave the building a unique combination of architectural styles as seen today. The pews and altar furniture date back to 1881. Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church has long been involved in social progress for the African-American community it serves. Members have promoted civil rights for many years including the organization of the first anti-lynching society in Texas in 1914. Like other religious organizations in this area, Wesley Tabernacle represents strength and perseverance and has done so over the past 150 years.Interested in information covered in this episode? Sunday MemoirsJarena LeeAfrican American Female PreacherSunday Memoirs  takes a look back in the past to find inspiration for the future. We will take time to share great inspiring accounts and building moments of the Black Church and others, depicting religious traditions and spiritual awakenings that contributed to the foundation of the church and our faith today.  At times we will share inspirational words to educate and encourage individuals on their journey of faith in God.This Sunday we will introduce a series called "Preachers from the Past", focusing on the preachers that risk their lives in many cases during enslavement to spread the message of the gospel and start some of our greatest churches and traditions of the day. Our journey takes to view the first female preacher in the A.M.E. Church and the first African American woman to have her autobiography published in the U.S.  A trailblazer for women in ministry then and now today. Minister Jarena Lee was the first authorized female preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. Lee, whose family or maiden name is unknown, was born to a poor but free black family on February 11, 1783, in Cape May, New Jersey.Born into a free black family, Lee noted the immorality of slavery. At a time period of segregation and unequal privilege, Richard Allen (Richard Allen, the African Methodist Episcopal Church founder and denomination bishop and pastor of Mother Bethel's AME Church) gave her the opportunity for her voice to be heard. Going up against racial and gender issues, she found her home and ability to let her voice be heard at the African Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1819. She was part of the Second Great Awakening. A leader in the Wesleyan-Holiness movement, Jarena Lee preached the doctrine of entire sanctification throughout pulpits of the African Methodist Episcopal connexon. She was also the first African American woman to have an autobiography published in the United States. In Lee's two autobiographical memoirs, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee and its expanded version, Religious Experience and Journal of Mrs. Jarena Lee. Extensive archival research by Dr. Frederick Knight has revealed that Jarena Lee died penniless in Philadelphia sometime in early 1864; despite this inauspicious end, her fight for women and religion inspired African American women and men then and today. Lee's work as a preacher broke a social barrier that had excluded women, especially black women, from religious leadership. This Sunday We Ponder:Preachers from the Past: Jarena LeePages 559Order a copy of the book at  https://www.blackhistory365education.com/joannescaifeCheck us out on social media:FacebookTwitterInstagramMusic By: Kirk Whalum, Title Song: Wade In the WaterEdited by: Juels N.
