There are few men politically or intellectually smarter than President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary Robert McNamara. So how did LBJ and McNamara screw up America's involvement in Vietnam so tragically? According to Peter Osnos, the author of LBJ and McNamara: The Vietnam Partnership Destined to Fail, it might have been because the two men were, in their own quite different ways, too smart. For Osnos - a legendary figure in American publishing who, amongst many other things, edited Donald Trump's Art of the Deal - the catastrophe of America's war in Vietnam is a parable about imperial hubris and overreach. According to Osnos, who has access to much previously unpublished material from McNamara, The Best and the Brightest orchestrated the worst and dumbest episode in American foreign policy. Peter Osnos began his journalism career in 1965 as an assistant to I. F. .Stone on his weekly newsletter. Between 1966–1984 Osnos was a reporter and foreign correspondent for The Washington Post and served as the newspaper's foreign and national editor. From 1984-1996 he was Vice President, Associate Publisher, and Senior Editor at Random House and Publisher of Random House's Times Books division. In 1997, he founded PublicAffairs. He served as Publisher and CEO until 2005, and was a consulting editor until 2020 when he and his wife, Susan Sherer Osnos, launched Platform Books LLC. Among the authors he has published and/or edited are — former President Jimmy Carter, Rosalyn Carter, Gen. Wesley Clark, Clark Clifford, former President Bill Clinton, Paul Farmer, Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Sam Donaldson, Kenneth Feinberg, Annette Gordon Reed, Meg Greenfield, Dorothy Height, Don Hewitt, Molly Ivins, Vernon Jordan, Ward Just, Stanley Karnow, Wendy Kopp, Charles Krauthammer, Brian Lamb, Jim Lehrer, Scott McClellan, Robert McNamara, Charles Morris, Peggy Noonan, William Novak, Roger Mudd. Former President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill, Nancy Reagan, Andy Rooney, Morley Safer, Natan Sharansky, George Soros, Susan Swain, President Donald Trump, Paul Volcker, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and Nobel peace prize Winner Muhammad Yunus, as well as journalists from America's leading publications and prominent scholars. Osnos has also been a commentator and host for National Public Radio and a contributor to publications including Foreign Affairs, The Atlantic, and The New Republic. He wrote the Platform column for the Century Foundation, the Daily Beast and The Atlantic.com from 2006-2014. He has also served as Chair of the Trade Division of the Association of American Publishers and on the board of Human Rights Watch. From 2005-2009, he was executive director of The Caravan Project, funded by the MacArthur and Carnegie Foundations, which developed a plan for multi-platform publishing of books. He was the Vice-Chairman of the Columbia Journalism Review from  2007-2012. He is a member of The Council on Foreign Relations. He is a graduate of Brandeis and Columbia Universities. He lives in New York City, with his wife Susan, a consultant to human rights and philanthropic organizations. His children are Evan L.R. Osnos and Katherine Sanford. There are five grandchildren.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. February 2021 was Black History Month, a movement that is not and should not be confined to one month of the calendar year. Despite the best intentions of many companies to promise change in the workplace for the better, Black History Month's message can easily get lost regardless of the many corporations pledging to make a positive change in their industries. In the last year, the Black Lives Matter movement has gained worldwide coverage helping to pull focus on Black history and the Black contribution to American society. With the whole world watching, it is more important than ever for corporations to stay true to their word when they say they are doing all they can to create fairer opportunities for all. In today's episode, we want to keep the conversation of Black History & Culture going beyond a month of celebration to stay intentional with the essential and ongoing change across our society. We discuss the ways businesses can tangibly support Black culture, minority employees, and minority suppliers. We explain why it's important to recognize the differences each person can bring to your business and why the fashion to ‘not see color' is unhelpful when you have a mix of cultures and backgrounds that you should try to understand and celebrate. We also look at the evolution of America and just how black people have been an integral part of the building of our nation, how they have been overlooked in the past for their contributions, and of course, why we celebrate the changes that have happened, are happening, and have yet to come. “What actually makes us stronger as friends and co-hosts is realizing those differences, celebrating them, and not being ashamed to talk about them.” – Adam Moore This week on Breaking Barriers: Why intentionality HAS to follow corporate statements that promise meaningful change How Affinity groups (BRGs) can create safe spaces for dialogue between minorities and their employers Why ‘not seeing color' doesn't work for healthy diversity The Black creators, contributors, and inventors behind the technologies we use today Why Juneteenth is a Black holiday for some parts of the US more than others How Hire Ground can help you help your employees volunteer for equality initiatives How to approach ‘difficult' conversations on diversity A moment for Vernon Jordan the black businessman and civil rights activist who sadly passed away this month Connect with Hire Ground: Hire Ground's Website Hire Ground on LinkedIn Hire Ground on Facebook Hire Ground on Twitter Cloe Guidry-Reed on LinkedIn Adam Moore on LinkedIn   This podcast is brought to you by Hire Ground Hire Ground is a technology company whose mission is to bridge the wealth gap through access to procurement opportunities. You value your time pretty highly, right? That's part of why you listen to How I Work - you're trying to get the most out of what precious time you have, whether it's a matter of getting more done when you're in the office, or freeing yourself from distraction when you're with your family. So you'd hope others value your time just as much - and therefore, you need to show others how much you value their time, especially if you're hoping to use some of it. This is the underlying principle in all of Janice Lintz's cold reachouts: whether she's writing a letter to the queen or trying to sort out her phone bill, Janice knows people want to protect their time. Janice Lintz is a hearing loss consultant and accessibility advocate, so when she wants to speak with someone, it's pretty damn important. But she recognises that if she's going to ask for someone else's time, she needs to demonstrate that it's worth her time, too. Enter the rule of fours. When the late, legendary activist Vernon Jordan finally answered Janice's phone call on the fourth attempt, he told her he only answered because she called so many times!Janice shares why this rule of four is so powerful, and explains how to apply the methodology to other parts of your work. Connect with Janice on Twitter or LinkedIn You can find the full interview here: Janice Lintz teaches you how to be heard by people who don't want to listen***My new book Time Wise is out now. Black Political Leaders                     There are two talks on Black leadership, one on Political Leaders, one on Intellectual Leaders.  This is the talk on Political Leaders.   The focus is upon nine key leaders.  There are others who are worthy of inclusion. I thought of Rosa Parks, far more significant than the demeaning image as a simple woman with tired feet who sat down rather than stand. Parks was a defiant activist who moved to Detroit to keep from being assassinated.  Without her and others like her organizing car pools, the Montgomery Bus Boycott would have failed.  She organized women on the ground, and sparked a movement.  Her leadership was remarkable.  May I recommend that you consider reading Dark At the End of the Street, an amazing book on the role of women in the civil rights movement.  It will change your way of thinking.  And will help you see Rosa Parks in a totally different light. Note: I intentionally left out elected leaders, although some are very significant.  There are separate podcasts on Barack Obama, Vernon Jordan, and others. Also Note:  There are two very good graphic-style biographies of John Lewis, the great civil rights leader and member of Congress.  One is called March, the other is called Run. Who are these leaders?   Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist and Black-rights activist,  who wrote Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the best of the slave memoirs. Sojourner Truth, activist, feminist who wrote a memoir. Brooker T. Washington, who wrote Up From SlaveryW. E. B. Du Bois, a founder of the NAACP and author of The Souls of the Black FolksMarcus Garvey and the United Negro Improvement AssociationMartin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership  Conference.  The film Selma describes one of his critical marches. Malcolm X, originally  of the Nation of Islam. His Autobiography of Malcolm X  is a remarkable work.  There is also an excellent film entitled Malcolm X  starring Denzel Washington. Jesse Jackson, who was an ally of Martin Luther King and then formed his own organization. Louis Farrakhan  of the Nation of Islam.  My conference paper (“The Political Ideology of Louis Farrakhan”) is deposited in Deep Blue.  Terms used:  Seneca Falls, Talented Tenth, Maroons, Black Nationalism, Black Star Line, Elijah Mohammed, Boston Latin High School, Calypso music, Fruit of Islam, J. Edgar Hoover, Paul Tillich, Rosa Parks, Southern Christian Leadership Conference/SCLC. The remarkable essay by Garvey that I call “Advice to Young People” is actually named “Intelligence, Education and Universal Knowledge.”  It is available on the internet.  If you read it, you will be glad you did.  ("Never forget that intelligence rules the world and ignorance carries the burden").

Fugitives and prison escapees from Indiana

Indiana wants me Lord, I can't go back there. Those were the opening lines of a pop song that became a hit in 1970, rising to No. 5 on the Billboard Top 100 list. True crime author Andrew Stoner uses the song, Indiana Wants Me, in his newest book as an entree to exploring fugitives and prison escapees throughout more than 100 years of Indiana history. To discuss several of the cases described in Wanted in Indiana: Infamous Hoosier Fugitives (The History Press) - including the assassination attempt in 1980 of a national civil rights leader in Fort Wayne that returned to the headlines this month - Andrew will be Nelson's guest. A native of Goshen and a former civilian spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Andrew now is an associate professor of communications studies at California State University in Sacramento. During our show, we will explore two cases connected to the FBI that illustrate advances in techniques for tracking down criminals. An escapee in 1919 from the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City was not found until the 1940s, when the FBI's fingerprint detection techniques finally resulted in his identification after a traffic stop in California. In 1960, a robber of banks in Logansport and Hamlet, Ind., made the FBI's Most Wanted List - and was captured just 24 hours later. In 1980, racist Joseph Paul Franklin committed two shootings in Indiana (one of them fatal) before attempting to assassinate Vernon Jordan, president of the National Urban League, during his trip to Fort Wayne for the organization's annual meeting. Using a hunting rifle, Franklin shot Jordan in the back.  Following a long recovery that made national news, Jordan survived and continued as a close advisor to U.S. presidents, including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. During our show, Andrew will describe how Franklin was tracked down after several months and more shootings. When Jordan died this month at age 85, the horrific episode in Fort Wayne was recounted in his obituaries. Also during our show, Andrew and Nelson will explore the cases of: Leslie "Mad Dog" Irvin, a notorious killer who escaped from the Gibson County Jail in southwestern Indiana in 1956. One of the cases involving Irvin, who was accused in multiple shootings, made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where it set a precedent involving pretrial publicity. Two women who escaped, separately, from the Indiana Women's Prison when it was located on the near-eastside of Indianapolis. One of the women was not found for 35 years; the other spent many years living, crime-free, just a few blocks from the prison. And a 15-year-old from Tippecanoe County who fled in 1942 after being accused of several crimes. Even though Floyd Loveless was a juvenile, he eventually was executed in Nevada after shooting a constable; the case illustrates the differences in the imposition of the death penalty since the 1940s. As a break from exploring the violent crimes, Andrew and Nelson also will discuss the colorful history of the 1970 song "Indiana Wants Me." Written and performed by Toronto native R. Dean Taylor - it was his only hit, according to Wanted in Indiana - the song remained on Billboard's charts for 15 weeks. Later, it was included on a list of the "52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard."

Vernon Jordan died on March 2, 2021.  He was one of the last of the Civil Rights generation, those giants who were contemporaries of Martin Luther King.  (Jesse Jackson is the last of that generation, unless I have forgotten someone). Jordan was at the center of DC politics, and of advancing Black rights.  As a close friend of Bill Clinton, he got questioned in the Monica scandal.  His answers show the substance of the man.  I met him once, when he was doing a book tour.  I was able to ask him a question, and got an answer that I really liked. This is my appreciation of his life.

For more than two decades, Vernon Jordan, was one of the most visible and influential spokespersons for the plight of black Americans. Jordan served a ten-year tenure as the executive director of the National Urban League, an organization dedicated to improving social conditions for blacks living in cities. His selection for that prestigious position while still in his mid-thirties was no fluke: Jordan had earned a reputation for dignified oratory, a level head, and a strong agenda as a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Southern Regional Council. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/biography/message

The legendary FBI criminal profiler and international bestselling author of Mindhunter and The Killer Across the Table returns with this timely, relevant book that goes to the heart of extremism and domestic terrorism, examining in-depth his chilling pursuit of, and eventual prison confrontation with Joseph Paul Franklin, a White Nationalist serial killer and one of the most disturbing psychopaths he has ever encountered.Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. The October 8, 1977 shooting was a forerunner to the tragedies and divisiveness that plague us today. John Douglas, the FBI’s pioneering, first full-time criminal profiler, hunted the shooter―a white supremacist named Joseph Paul Franklin, whose Nazi-inspired beliefs propelled a three-year reign of terror across the United States, targeting African Americans, Jews, and interracial couples. In addition, Franklin bombed the home of Jewish leader Morris Amitay, shot and paralyzed Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, and seriously wounded civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. The fugitive supported his murderous spree robbing banks in five states, from Georgia to Ohio. Douglas and his writing partner Mark Olshaker return to this disturbing case that reached the highest levels of the Bureau, which was fearful Franklin would become a presidential assassin―and haunted him for years to come as the threat of copycat domestic terrorist killers increasingly became a reality. Detailing the dogged pursuit of Franklin that employed profiling, psychology and meticulous detective work, Douglas and Olshaker relate how the case was a make-or-break test for the still-experimental behavioral science unit and revealed a new type of, determined, mission-driven serial killer whose only motivation was hate.A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign. In fact, they were still whitewashing part of it when we were there. That must've been in 1974 or something like that. David Wilmot: It would've been around that time. That's absolutely correct, because when I was growing up, the only hotel we had was the Little Bay Hotel. We only had one hotel on the island. I wasn't actually born in St. Martin. I need to share that with you. My parents and grandparents went to a place called Panama to work on the Panama Canal. Andy Ockershausen: Is that right? Hello History Friends and welcome back to rememberinghistory.com where we are remembering history and we’re making history. I’m glad that you have returned for this fantastic, trailblazing and incredibly amazing series called “6 Fun and Easy Ways to be inspired by history”! And I believe this series really is all those things. Why? Because anything that can help to inspire us in so many different ways (and to such great heights) must be fantastic, trailblazing and incredibly amazing-or at least just incredibly amazing!    What have we learned so far?  In Part I, we discovered that you can be inspired by books about history.  I’m not talking about the 800 or 1,000-page history textbooks from high school and college though some people could be inspired by them. But I am talking about history as great literature.  I mentioned the “non-fiction novel” that was first used by Truman Capote when he wrote In Cold Blood.  Then I also mentioned the Pulitzer prize-winning book, The Devil in the Grove, written by Gilbert King that brought the setting and players of the early civil rights movement to life. Definitely get that book!   I discussed and read excerpts from slave narratives and from Frederick Douglass’s autobiography, which presented history directly from the people involved.  In short, we discovered that books about history can be amazingly inspirational when they are works of real literature that tell stories rather than feed us names, dates and death counts.  As David McCullough said, “No harm is done to history by making it something that someone would want to read.”  I have many inspirational books about history in the bookstore at rememberinghistory.com.  So, I hope that you’ll look there and find something for you. Remember that I have personally read and vetted these sources so you can trust them.  Or you can hold me accountable if you don’t like them.   Today (in Part II), we will examine another way to be inspired by history.    Watch Great Movies    I understand that there are lots of people who just prefer not to read.  Or they have to read all day so they don’t want to spend their evenings and weekends reading too. I get that! And I don’t make any judgments.   There are fantastic movies that bring history to life and are amazingly inspirational too. Just like books, movies walk the line between fiction and nonfiction.  Here are some examples: Amistad (about the transatlantic slave trade and a group of captured Africans who demand to be returned home). Twelve Years a Slave (about the experience of Solomon Northrup who was a free black man, captured and sold into slavery for 12 years), Glory (about a black army troop during the Civil War), Schlinder’s List (about the Jewish holocaust and the rescue of Jews during WWII), Saving Private Ryan (follows a marine troop during World War II), Lincoln (about the passage of the 13th Amendment), Selma (about the civil rights movement, including the marches and protests to demand voting rights) and many other movies immersed audiences in great historical events or the lives and experiences of people from the past.  (By the way, I just want to mention that most of these movies are based on books, nonfiction novels—they are great reads!) These movies could be called big screen equivalents of Capote’s nonfiction novel.  Still, these types of movies are firmly based in fact but they present as stories. In movies, this means that there is some creative license to “fill in details” or make slight changes to the truth, the true story, in order to make the story flow well and connect on the screen.    Other movies are purely works of fiction but are so well researched and presented that they also cross the line into inspirational works of true history. Remember The Color Purple showed life in the 1920s American south for Celie who endured racism, sexism and abuse before she discovered her own power and self-worth. Beloved by Toni Morrison which shows the horrors of slavery and the aftermath—emotional, physical and psychological effects—of that terrible practice. Other movies brought painful stories to life but also inspired us to overcome our own challenges and hardships.  Personally, I will never forget the film, Men of Honor, with Cuba Gooding, Jr. Who could fail to be inspired by that movie?  I could go on and on (you know that I can) about the different movies and how they can be so inspirational but I promised to keep it wiki (remember that’s Hawaiian for quick) so I won’t mention any more of them but I will encourage to follow the link (if you’re reading the blog) or go to the Remembering History Podcast page on Facebook for a great list and discussion of these movies.  And remember that you can purchase them in the Books & Stuff store on the website.   On a slightly different note, leaving the nonfiction novel-type of movie, I want to mention documentaries. No sighs or rolling eyes please!  Documentaries usually delve deeply into a particular person’s life, an historical event or a situation. They are similar to history textbooks except (obviously) they are visual and they tend to give a more full, more realistic and more lively picture.  They will not use creative license to fill in facts. They present the facts so it is a different genre than a movie like Saving Private Ryan, for example. But documentaries are usually wonderfully well written, well researched and well presented.  They are worth your time and attention because they will—they do—inspire.   Let me give some examples about documentaries made about former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. (Yes, he is one of my heroes!)  There was the documentary called With All Deliberate Speed (2004) which actually contains interviews with some of the people involved in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Vernon Jordan, Julian Bond are interviewed. And Thurgood Marshall’s son gives an inspiring and emotional interview about the case and his father.  Another documentary called And Justice for All (2005) discusses the Brown case and gives the background about segregation and the fight to desegregate the public school system. Not boring listening with facts and numbers flashing on the screen. Instead there is real footage, interviews, discussions and explanations about the civil rights movement. People are telling their stories. And we hear Thurgood Marshall’s story.  Literature on the small screen! And inspiration can be felt throughout the film. Biography and History Channel have many excellent documentaries and you can find them on the rememberinghistory.com website in the bookstore.   So, movies based on history can be incredibly, amazingly inspirational. Documentaries can be equally inspirational. Don’t be put off by documentaries—they are more than visual textbooks, they are collections of living history. Both movies and documentaries are also educational and informative.  And entertaining too. Remember as David McCullough said that “No harm is done to history by making it something that someone would want to read”, I will take it a step further to say that no harm is done to history by making something that someone would want to watch!   So, Part II of this 6-part series on “Fun and Easy Ways to be inspired by history” is to Watch movies and documentaries. Watch. Learn. Be inspired.   That is all for today, history friends! I hope that you have enjoyed this part of the series and have found a useful way to connect with history. But we’re not done yet. We still have part three and, no, I won’t give any sneak peeks into the third way to be inspired by history. You will just have to listen to the podcast or read the bodacious blog tomorrow.   I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at rememberinghistory.com where we are remembering history and we’re making history. Bye for now.
