We've been thinking (and talking, and writing) a lot lately about the forces that are shaping the future of agriculture. There are the more obvious ones– artificial intelligence and mandatory climate disclosures– to the less obvious, like the ubiquity of remotely sensed data and geoengineering. All of these forces, and others like them, are not only acting on ag and the institutions the industry depends on, they're also acting on one another, evolving and compounding all the time.  We investigated these forces, and four critical scenarios that they might create, in our latest report, Navigating a Future of Cross-Sectoral Forces, commissioned by AgriFutures Australia. Current industries include honey bee's and pollination, ginger, tea tree, goat fibre, buffalo, deer, rice and kangaroo.  This week's episode however is with Dr Olivia Reynolds who works with those smaller industries trying to grow and prosper as she currently heads up the Emerging Industries Team for AgriFutures Australia. Current emerging industries include Hemp, Seaweed, Sesame and Insects. In this podcast Olivia talks about the benefits of industries having a strong collective interest and a well skilled industry body and how AgriFutures can assist industries trying to develop from there. We talk about the importance of research, how having the right skill set for an industry body is far more important than "self appointing" and some of the work that her and her team are undertaking - from Truffles, to Australians burgeoning coffee growers - we even touch on how insects are playing a role in a major australian city CBD in eradicating food waste. Hosts: Sam Baff from Grown Not FlownGuest: Dr Olivia Reynolds - Senior Manager, Emerging Industries - AgriFutures AustraliaWebsite: www.agrifutures.com.auInstagram: @agrifuturesau

Nixon and Watergate

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2023 66:15

In this episode we look back at several of the accomplishments of John Jenrette's time in the United States House of Representative. In many ways it laid the groundwork for  much of the enormous growth we have seen in our region over the past 40 plus years. We will look at the start of the Tourism and Travel Caucus that allowed the tourism industry to finally have a group in Congress to protect its interests and help the nation develop a strategy to make the industry grow.  And grow it has to a 1.2 Trillion Dollar industry that employs one in ten Americans all over the country. John Jenrette created the Tourism and Travel Caucus and it is still in existence today. The fact is that John Jenrette, then representing a regional tourism destination, had put Myrtle Beach on the map as the leader in tourism innovation and in a place of leadership for the industry.  Today the Grand Strand welcomes 20 million tourists annually. John Jenrette was also a leader in protecting the interest of small farmers in an era when Agribusiness was taking over the Agriculture world. Secretary Earl Butts was the face of Farming policy in America and his philosophy was "Go big or go home" and that put America's small farmers at an enormous disadvantage. However, in Congress the small farmer had one true champion to keep that mentality in check and it was universally seen as Congressman John Jenrette.  From defending the pesticide Miramax to fight fire ants, to investigating prices during the era of price controls in order to protect the small farmers,  John Jenrette  also tripled the exemption on the inheritance tax so that those small farmers, and small business people for that matter too, were protected from having to sell their family farms because they had ended up land rich but cash poor, a benefit that is still protecting the common man to this day. Finally, it was in constituent service that John Jenrette had a record that is the stuff of legend. He helped any and everyone who came to him for help. One of the most consequential is the help he gave a future member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame, Ron McNair.  A man who dreamed of becoming an Astronaut, who grew up in the segregated southern town of Lake City , South Carolina. He would go to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earn a doctorate in science. In an era when there were over 10,000 applications to get into the NASA Space Program, Ron McNair applied and then went to his friend Thelma McClam who worked for Congressman John Jenrette to see if he could get help to get in the program.  In this episode we tell the story of how John Jenrette worked overtime to win over the entire South Carolina Congressional delegation and then the President of the United States in order to help Ron McNair get in the Space Program. It was a new era in Washington D.C. and the United States of America. Finally, the great gash in modern American history, The Vietnam War and the Watergate Crisis, was in the rearview mirror.  It was all symbolized by a new American President from Georgia, who had risen out of seemingly nowhere to be elected President.  He represented a refreshing change, with a big toothy smile, and Baptist Minister like promise that he would never lie to the American People,  a peanut farmer ushered in an outsider tenure, and rested away the reigns of power from the Washington insiders many saw as having nearly driven the country off a cliff. Now Jimmy Carter would address the nation and do something we had not seen since the days of Thomas Jefferson in the Presidency. He got out of the limousine and walked the full length of Pennsylvania Avenue. It was as shocking in the moment as it was refreshing for the American People to see for themselves a new President, a President who was one of us. In this episode we let you relive the Inauguration of Jimmy Carter, his full address, and a good chunk of his walk down Pennsylvania  Avenue as though you were right there watching it as it happened. The Realists UncensoredHey future listeners, it's Checkers and MJ here and we are two American men that are...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AgriFutures On AirThe official podcast channel for AgriFutures Australia. However, the real opportunity for Carter was created by who was not on the ballot, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey. In a field of such well known figures, it was amazing the vision that Congressman John Jenrette had to step up and out front for Jimmy Carter. Jenrette was the first sitting member of Congress to endorse and campaign on behalf of Jimmy Carter for President. It was a political risk and favor that Jimmy Carter never forgot. In this episode you will hear that story and the common upbringing in the rural South that bonded the two men together. For both of them had stood up against the tide of their two deep South states and been strong supporters of protecting the civil rights of their African American constituents and those stands had launched them both on to the national stage. For most of the next four years Jimmy Carter and John Jenrette turned the political World on its head. It would be a successful run for both men with accomplishments both the World and our region of South Carolina continue to benefit from all of these many years later. Over the next few episodes we will listen in on what could only be described as a remarkable political run. The Realists UncensoredHey future listeners, it's Checkers and MJ here and we are two American men that are...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AgriFutures On AirThe official podcast channel for AgriFutures Australia. It was an historic class of freshman members to Congress in 1974. It was made up of 17 Republicans and 74 Democrats and many would go on to become household names. They turned the inner workings of the House Chamber upside down, removing longtime chairmen, and opening up the rules for more transparency and more access, in ways that are still with us today. In the midst of all of this Speaker Carl Albert, with his Majority Leader Tip O'Neill , made a decision that one of these freshman needed to be in leadership and he picked the one he thought had the most potential, and the brightest future, John W. Jenrette Jr of the 6th District of South Carolina. In this episode we look back at this class through the eyes of John Jenrette as he recalls the moves that changed an institution. We remember some of the all stars of this class like Paul Tsongas, Paul Simon, Max Baucus, George Miller, Jeff Jeffords, Jim Florio, Henry Hyde,  Tom Harkin, Henry Waxman, Larry Pressler, Butler Derrick, and the one member still serving in Congress today, now Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.  They left a mark on their times, so much so, they were all the subject of an extraordinary book "The Class of '74" by John Lawrence. We use excerpts from the author's excellent interviews available on You Tube ,where he discusses the 1974 class and its impact.  https://youtu.be/E2MfhV8Ax0w An Interview with John Lawrence, author of "The Class of '74." - R Street InstituteJohn Lawrence , was a former Chief of Staff to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and worked for a while under Congressman George Miller, a member of the 1974 class. The book on the class received rave reviews like this one:"If you want to know how we got to this bitterly partisan time in politics, read this book. Through hundreds of fascinating interviews plus rigorous research, Lawrence shows us how unintended consequences of congressional 'reforms' started the country along this poisonous path. In this episode , we look back at the high drama of winning a historic primary and unseating a political giant, only to lose in the general election. Then coming back two years later to finally win a seat in the United States House of Representatives. It was a rollercoaster of a ride with enormously consequential side stories that had far reaching importance. For the 1972 race for the 6th District Congressional Seat would open the door for the City of Washington D.C. to finally have some semblance of self governing. For years, John McMillan who chaired the committee that governed the District had prevented any form of self rule , save the schoolboard, from getting out of his committee.  African Americans had decided that the only way to achieve this goal was to unseat McMillan, and they would organize to try it twice, in 1970 when they lost and again in 1972. This time they had a strong candidate and they knew it. John Jenrette was young, talented, and had been a friend to the African American Community for years. We will listen as John Jenrette tells the story of how he got in the race, and why he decided to stay in the race even when he had only a 3% name identification in the district. He would get help from Muhammad Ali, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. He would get help from his cousin the State Senator, James Stevens, and the race would be razor thin but John Jenrette would win. Then he would face State Representative Ed Young, a Republican, who would get help from John McMillan and many other disgruntled Democrats. He would also have another ace up his sleave, one of the greatest leaders in American History, Richard Nixon. It would prove to be a mountain to high for John Jenrette to climb and Ed Young would get elected to Congress. But two years later all of that would change.  NOTE: This show features my proudest researching find, the meeting between President Richard Nixon, 6th District Republican nominee Ed Young , and Nixon aid Harry Dent from South Carolina, from the Nixon taping system.  The Realists UncensoredHey future listeners, it's Checkers and MJ here and we are two American men that are...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AgriFutures On AirThe official podcast channel for AgriFutures Australia. Liz Frost is undoubtedly one of those humans and I am thrilled to introduce her to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast for episode 60. Hailing from California, now residing in the Hunter region of NSW, Liz has worked in the United States and Australia in honeybee breeding and insemination and has a special ability to reflect on her experiences in the field. In a poem written for the publication 2 Million Blossoms, she aptly described the devastation of the bushfires that had been ravaging the area where she lived for some six months in 2019–2020; highlighting the resilience of the apiarists who “press on in secret… Tracking any budding trees left alive.” In this poem and its accompanying essay, she perfectly conjures the connection between beekeepers and the land, not to mention the vital role bees play is rejuvenating the environment after disasters such as this one. Liz Frost's CV is a brilliant manifesto of love for bees and the environment. She has had innumerable roles in the field both locally and overseas and is now working for the New South Wales Department or Primary Industries as a Technical Specialist of bees. In parallel and as part of her role, she is the co-manager of Plan Bee—the National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program run in collaboration with USYD, UNE and AGBU—Better Bees WA and the Wheen Bee Foundation—funded by DAWE Rural R&D for Profit Program. Her job involves managing research and development projects focusing on queen bee breeding and pollination, and providing technical advice to the beekeeping industry, government, researchers, media and the public. Her current project Plan Bee: Australia's National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program is a program that Liz co-manages with University of Sydney professor Dr. Nadine Chapman, whose research interest includes establishing “an economically sustainable national genetic improvement program using innovative breeding technologies to transform the performance of honey bees in Australia.” And that is what Liz and Nadine are doing with Plan B, as they evaluate and implement tools, technologies and systems to better honeybee breeding programs in Australia—amazing and inspiring work! AND excitingly, the Plan B Info Workshop for queen breeders is happening in just a few days on 2 July 2021.
