British author J.R. Hensby joins us from the U.K.WAS ELVIS MURDERED?AND OTHER TRUE CRIMES FROM THE DARK SIDE OF DIXIEThe shock was felt around the world when it was announced on August 16th 1977 that the world's biggest superstar, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock-n-Roll, had died at the age of only forty-two. Since then there has been much speculation about what actually happened on that fateful day. Did he die of natural causes? Did he commit suicide? Did he die of a drug overdose? Did he not die at all? Or was he murdered? The author, a massive fan of Elvis, examines in great detail all the available evidence relating to these possible scenarios and gives an opinion about what did happen to Elvis all those years ago. That is the main story in the book, but additionally there are detailed true accounts of twelve horrible crimes committed in the beautiful Deep South of America: Young black boys who were electrocuted without any fair trial, women who murdered family members with impunity for years, a Baptist Minister who murdered the church handyman....... and much more.Illustrated with 20 full page photos.https://www.amazon.com/WAS-ELVIS-MURDERED-OTHER-CRIMES-ebook/dp

Gary shares insights into the complexities of conversion, emphasizing that it is not merely a one-time event but an ongoing process that requires time and reflection. Throughout the episode, Gary discusses the significance of the temple in his faith journey, highlighting how his understanding evolved from initial confusion to a deeper appreciation for its role in connecting him to Jesus Christ. He stresses the importance of personal connections and clear messaging when discussing the temple, advocating for a focus on the principles of Jesus rather than the mystique often surrounding the temple experience. Gary also addresses the challenges of being perceived as a newcomer in the faith, noting the need for patience and understanding as individuals navigate their spiritual journeys at their own pace. 02:08 - Gary's Journey from Baptist Minister to Latter-day Saint 03:01 - Conversation Dynamics Between Friends 04:11 - Life Updates from Gary Miller 05:44 - The Complexity of Conversion Stories 06:34 - Cultural vs. Theological Conversion 09:14 - The Ongoing Nature of Conversion 10:27 - The Binary Nature of Faith Commitment 12:14 - The Importance of Personal Reflection in Faith 13:18 - Navigating the Journey of Faith 15:23 - The Cage Stage of New Believers 18:12 - The Need for Quiet Reflection 19:08 - Balancing Old and New Faith Communities 21:00 - Building a Foundation in Faith 22:33 - The Role of the Temple in Conversion 25:49 - Personal Connections and Understanding the Temple 29:06 - The Temple as a Place of Worship 30:40 - Messaging the Importance of the Temple 32:07 - The Need for Authentic and Simple Messaging 34:01 - Engaging with Old Friends about the Temple 36:29 - The Gravity of Worship in the Temple 37:34 - Current Calling and Church Involvement 38:32 - Gary's Podcasting Journey 41:08 - Balancing Scripture The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. Paul Joy is a School Chaplain, ordained Baptist Minister, religious TYP listener (pun intended) and freakishly talented Sketch Artist (weird combo, I know). I might be insulting some religious folk when I say that he's uncharacteristically relatable, real and open-minded but.. oh well, I said it. Sorry, not sorry. Anyway, we decided to get together and chat all things God, religion, the validity of the bible, love, connection, the co-existence of faith and doubt, the declining numbers in (most) churches, Christianity's 'PR' problem, my church journey and plenty more. I very much liked this chat.handdrawntoday.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr. Brian Duncan graduated high school early and went straight into Baptist ministry training. On fire for Jesus, he was constantly seeking deeper resources to help him teach the faith, which led him to discover the Church Fathers. Teaching from them caused problems in his independent Baptist congregation, so he spent a little time in a Reformed Baptist church, which also didn't work out. Disillusioned, he sought a house church environment, at which point he realized it was time for him to stop trying to reinvent and reclaim the Christianity of the early Church; and what he'd been trying to rebuild on his own initiative was present in its fulness right in front of him in the Catholic Faith. He has since gone on to found Catholic Fightwear, and work as a martial arts instructor.
This week, I was joined by Dr. Anthony Pinn to discuss his latest book, "The Black Practice of Disbelief: An Introduction to the Principles, History, and Communities of Black Nonbelievers". Dr. Pinn is a former Baptist Minister who no longer identifies as a Christian or believer. Now, Pinn identifies as a Black Humanist and argues that Black Humanism is inherently Religious. We discuss the reason for his shift and some pretty sharp critiques that he has off the Church. Dr. Pinn walks me through his 6 pirnciples of Black Humanism then connects them to our everyday lives and the constant struggle for justice and human flouring. This was a deeply informative and moving conversation that has a lot to offer regardless of your religious identification or lack there of. Enjoy! Steve Tinning is a Baptist Minister, a Public Issues Enabler for the Baptist Union of Great Britain and one of the team that makes Beer and Hymns happen at Greenbelt festival. Steve is a lovely chap and talks to us about his secondment to JPIT (the Joint Public Issues Team of the Baptist, URC and Methodist churches), issues of asylum and refugee response, and about different responses to Ukrainian and other groups of refugees. But we also got him on the show to talk about one of our favourite things: Beer and Hymns. Steve tells us a little about the origins and spread of the idea, how he came to be involved and the deep, thorough and extensive philosophy behind it. He also has ideas abouthow you can run a Beer and Hymns (or Beer and Carols) in a pub near you! Also, given that Israel, at time of recording, was still bombing the trapped and overwhelmingly civilian population of Gaza, we also talked about Palestine and standing with Palestinians. Steve Tinning denounces Hamas, you'll be pleased to know. This episode runs a little long because Jonty and Steve argued a little, and also because we wanted to include some clips of Beer and Hymns in the wild. Included are audio tracks from Greenbelt 2023 , Greenbelt 2013 (featuring Dave Ball) and from the White House pub in Oxford, hosting St Aldates' Beer and Hymns (a more sedate and civilised affair than the Jesus Arms version) a few weeks ago. New to Beer Christianity? Welcome! Beer Christianity is an anti-capitalist, pro-BLM, pro-LGBTQ+, post-post-post-evangelical (and apparently republican) podcast where we drink a bit and talk a lot. Our aim is to be real, to be helpful and entertaining. Follow Beer Christianity on Twitter: @beerxianity and find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Stitcher. If you leave us a voicenote at speakpipe.com/beerchristianity we might air your question on an episode. Beer Christianity also has a newsletter in which Jonty and guest authors comment on the news, theological issues and stuff that matters. Sign up to the Beer Christianity newsletter on Substack. There's a connected Show With Music on Spotify called New Old Music. Check it out if you like eclectic music and weird chat. It's not terribly serious. Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not available in all good bookshops, but if you bought it and left a review that would probably make that more likely. We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

The first black female CEO of one of the largest privately-funded global non-profits discusses the experiences that helped her learn how to be a better advocate for others. These experiences range from a father who served in the NAACP tackling civil rights in 1960s South Carolina, to her own life journey serving as a trial lawyer, a Baptist minister and in the military during Operation Desert Storm. She'll explain what she's learned about partnering and rallying others for a cause - and what every leader must know about engaging others and getting your point across.

I was taking a walk at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, NY when I spotted a woman working out swinging ‘sumthin' in the distance. I was curious what the heck she was doing and wanted to ask her. So, I walked over and saw she was swinging a contraption around her waist and hips, similar to what we used to do as kids with that old Skip-It toy you'd swing around your ankle and jump over with your other leg. 'Weighted Hula Hoops' she said are a Tik Tok Trend. Who Knew? I instantly felt I might need one too! LOL I got to talking with Dr. Karen Blacks, who said according to her app, her 20 minutes of 'hula hooping' was the same as walking 2 miles, plus it tightens your core, she said. A few laughs later, I find out like me, Dr. Blacks enjoys talking to strangers, so I told her about my upcoming little book, “How To Talk To Strangers, Advice From A Professional Stranger Talker.” Then she told me she wrote a book called 'Experiencing God in The Ordinary'. Then she mentioned she was excited she was being ordained at a Baptist Minister that weekend, then… I invited her on my show to share the big hula hoop discovery and celebrate her accomplishment! Meanwhile, next day Amazon delivered my own 'weighted hula hoop'. I chose blue. It was pretty easy to figure out how to size it to my waist and attach the weighted thingy. What was challenging was figuring ‘where' to hula. I tried it inside my house and almost cleared all the glasses off my bar. I was too embarrassed to let my neighbors see me hula swinging outside my house, so I waited till almost dark and tried it out for like 2 minutes. Then I put it in my car and figured I'd just keep it there for when I went walking and do it in a random park. But every time I was about to take it out and swing it around, I thought I'd look stupid, so I didn't. One day just as I walked into a CVS drugstore, my phone rang, and it was my bestie Mo calling from the parking lot telling me that I'd just parked next to her and walked past her car without noticing. I knew she was in a funky mood, so I thought I'd cheer her up on the way back out, and make her laugh by showing off my moves with my new hula hoop in the parking lot while she watched from inside her car. That was a good laugh. Anyway, I finally found the perfect spot to do my hula exercise, a hideaway grassy area in my local park. The other day after walking I put it on, and got my weighted hula hooping swinging up to 5 minutes and found myself sweating. Even crazier, I checked my ‘steps' on my iPhone and sure enough it was like I had walked another half mile. I'm getting the hang of it now. Last night after walking, right around dusk when I got back to my car in a mostly empty parking lot, I figured no one would notice me hula swinging. So I put it on, and hula hooped with my phone in my hand to just again see if it counted as ‘steps'. Out of the corner of my eye I saw random woman walking in the distance toward her parked car but paid her no mind, until she turned and started walking toward me and I knew why. In her Norwegian accent she said,… ‘What' is that thing you're doing?” I was laughing while still hooping as I told her, I had done the same exact thing when I saw the random Baptist Minister swinging her weighted hula hoop. Now the Norwegian lady wanted to get one too. So, while still swinging away, I gave her the name of it to look it up on Amazon. Anyway, I decided some of you after reading this story, might get a kick out of the idea and want to try a weighted hula hoop too. I got my 'Dumoyi Smart Weighted Fit Hoop on Amazon'. Let me know if you get one. LOL Meanwhile listen in and have some laughs and meet my latest 'Random Run In' Dr. Karen Blacks in this podcast of our live conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show. When she's not 'hula hooping' at the dam, Dr. Karen Blacks serves as the Associate Minister, and Minister of Women's Initiatives at Antioch Baptist Church in Bedford Hills, New York. Dr. Blacks is also the founder of Women of God in the World, a welcoming community of over 10,000 women from 30+ countries. Dr. Blacks holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary and a Certificate of Specialization in Leadership and Management from Harvard Business School Online. She also has a heart for volunteering and can be found distributing food to those in need in the White Plains community. She serves on the Town of Bedford Prison Relations Advisory Committee, is a member of the Westchester NY Black Women's Political Caucus and is on the board of the Women's Empowerment Forum located in Liberia, Africa.
This week we have a super interesting conversation with self proclaimed “Psychedelic Theologist” Kaleb Graves. Kaleb is a Baptist Minister whose life was profoundly changed by the spiritual and metaphysical implications of his exploration with psychedelics. Disappointed by the lack of informed voices that sought to seriously address these substances and the experience that they induce within the context of the Christian faith, he attended and graduated from Duke Divinity School where he explored these implications for himself, and he continues to fill the gap between psychedelics and religion by studying the mind, theology, and altered states of consciousness. The result of his work, he calls Psychedelic Theology which is a resource for psychonauts who have religious experiences, and for religious folks who have mystical experiences as a result of psychedelic use and need assistance on how to connect their experience with their faith. Head on over to psychedelictheology.com to connect with Kaleb and digest the amazing work he is doing. https://www.psychedelictheology.com/ https://www.instagram.com/psychedelic_theology/ https://www.instagram.com/jkalebgraves/_________________Music By Nathan Willis RIPFollow Pursuit Of Infinity:www.PursuitOfInfinity.comDiscord: https://discord.io/pursuitofinfinityYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPpwtLPMH5bjBTPMHSlYnwQSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/58he621hhQ7RkajcmFNffbApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/pursuit-of-infinity/id1605998093Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pursuitofinfinitypod/Patreon: Patreon.com/PursuitOfInfinity

He regularly speaks at the Cathedral's Sunday morning seminar-style ‘Breakfast with the Bible', and also leads a ‘fellowship group'. Paul continues to preach in churches of various denominations, although he is happy just to be part of the Sunday 9.30 Parish Eucharist at the Cathedral.Paul co-founded a bi-monthly lunchtime for retired Baptist ministers in Mid- and South Essex, and takes the lead in presenting topics for discussion.Since 2005 Paul has been a member of the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Rivermead, and was the 2016-2017 club president. In June 2018 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. With its aim of ‘service above self', Paul sees his Rotary involvement as an expression of Christian ministry.Ministry ExperienceAs Senior Minister of Central Baptist Church, Chelmsford (1993-2014) he transformed a traditional declining city-centre church into a strong vibrant, growing fellowship; at the time he left there were 399 committed members, together with a much larger church community. As Principal of Spurgeon's College, London (1986-1993) he doubled the student enrolment, increased the faculty by one-third, and developed new patterns of ministerial trainingAs Pastor of Altrincham Baptist Church, Cheshire (1973-1986) he enabled a small declining church to develop into a strong virile church, quadrupled in size (from 83 to 300+ members). As a BMS Missionary in Congo/Zaire (1990-1992) he taught Greek and New Testament in the Protestant Theological Faculty of the National University.Prior to going up to Cambridge Paul served as a ‘Time for God' worker with the German Baptists (1962-63), helping with Baptist youth work in Southern Germany.Interests Beyond MinistryIn Who's Who? It consists of four volumes:Living to God's Glory (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Leading God's Church (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Reaching God's World (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Serving God's Church (on Amazon, also available as a PDF).According to Derek Tidball, a former Principal of the London College of Theology. this is “the most comprehensive practical introduction to ministry currently available. He has written his autobiography, This is my story: a story of life, faith, and ministry (Wipf & Stock, Eugene, Oregon 2018). In the words of the cover blurb:This is a book for pastors – and for any Christian – who want the “inside story” of the pains and triumphs of a Christian leader. He has updated two popular pastoral resources. The first is Happy Ever After? A workbook for couples preparing for marriage (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017). Biblically-based and solidly practical, it covers everything from money to matrimonial disagreement, from coming to terms with the past to sharing jobs in the house. The second, A Loved One Dies: help in the first few weeks (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017), gives down-to earth advice on how to arrange the funeral service, and the many other practical matters that arise after a death. It also provides clear thoughts on the Christian understanding of death to help the bereaved discover hope where at first there is only sadness.Following his 2017 survey of the reading habits of British ministers – the first survey of its kind in the UK, he published a major 8000-word article, ‘Ministers' Reading Habits', Baptist Quarterly 49 (January 2018). The full analysis together with further reflections is found on this website. He has written three books on ministerial retirement.Retirement Matters for Ministers: A report into how into how Baptist ministers experience retirement (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018), is based on a research project and explores issues such as the transition to retirement; housing and finance; health; friendships; family; and ministry in retirement.Entering New Territory: Why are retired Baptist ministers moving to Anglican churches? (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2019) is based on a second research project and explores the underlying theological issues.Making the Most of Retirement (Bible Reading Fellowship, Abingdon 2020) was written for ministers of all denominations and is the first such book for ministers written from a distinctively British perspective. His two latest books are:Fifty Lessons in Ministry: Reflections on Fifty Years of Ministry (Darton, Longman & Todd, London 2020) written to coincide with his 50th anniversary of ordinationThere is Hope! Their next pilgrimage will be in October 2024 and will be the first when Steve's sister, Reverend Ruth, a Baptist Minister, will join them not as a pilgrim but as the third leader of the group. In today's programme Steve and Rod talk about the sacred sites in Galilee and Jerusalem, and share some personal thoughts on what still makes the experience so special for them both. The October 2024 pilgrimage is open to people of all faiths and none - all are welcome and there is no pressure to join in the times of prayer and reflection. I'm excited to bring you this topic on emotion code therapy because of the difference it has made in my mental and emotional health. My guest, Eileen Love is an Emotion Code Practitioner. This is a 2 part series with the fist covering all the different ways that the human body holds trauma and tries to convey the need for us to find healing. This is going to be a lengthy intro and a I hate that for you but there's so much to unpack that I want to sort it out a little bit before we jump into the bulk of episode. My conversation with Eileen is full of examples, scripture, and first hand experiences to the point that I realized I'd have to create 2 episodes from all that Eileen shares. Part 2 will cover more of what an emotion code session looks like. The first thing I want to address is that this topic is going to be controversial in the Christian community. The reason is because it has been hijacked by new age healers. Before I explain why, allow me to give you a quick glimpse of why I brought emotion code healing to God for His input and it's because of a very good experience that I had with something similar, Theophostic Prayer Ministry or as many people call it Inner Healing Prayer therapy. In my theophostic prayer session I received breakthrough healing for what I believe (based on the peace in my mind/life/heart)to be the last layer of trauma for abandonment. However, I'll be the first one to say that if I get triggered again around an abandonment issue it simply means that I still have some work to do for another layer of healing and I'm open to that because God heals me in layers. But in the meantime I live with deep peace because of Theophostic Prayer therapy. A little history on this type of ministry is that a Baptist Minister, Ed Smith, developed the Theophostic Prayer Ministry model here in the United States back in the 90's. A simplified explanation for what happens during a theophostic therapy session is that you sit with someone who is trained in this type of therapy and they guide you with questions around a traumatic event in your life and you talk with Jesus about what you are experiencing. In my theophostic prayer work I came to a place where I asked Jesus, "Where were you when my mother left me on the side of the road when I was 6 years old?" As I verbally asked God this question, I was sitting still, eyes closed, nothing but darkness before me. Then The Holy Spirit gave me the most precious image of Jesus walking beside me, his hand in the middle of my shoulder blades, He's looking down at me. Maybe I'm talking and He's listening but He's looking at me and we're walking together. That visual gave me proof that Jesus fulfills His promise that He'd never leave me nor forsake me. That one image broke off years of unforgiveness towards my mother. The power of guided prayer through painful memories stored in the body has immense reward when God and the Holy Spirit are engaged. The outcome that I experienced with theophostic prayer is why I wanted to know God's opinion about Emotion Code therapy. Okay, so back to why the new age wants to make its claims on emotion code therapy. As believers this is no secret to us, whatever God says is good, Satan wants to distort it at the very least and destroy at the very worst. So when we look at God's intention behind the healing qualities of herbs and oils or natural and organic healing options (because, in my humble opinion before all of the genetic mutations and man-made virus and chemicals etc. the human body, made from a handful of dust, would naturally find the healing elements that it needed from the earth) But Satan is not going to let God get the credit for that so in a vague and unassuming way satan adds his half truth to something and twists the focus away from the Creator to the created such as crystals, potions using the herbs, as well as energy healings. In satan's half truths he uses a connecting link such as the fact that there is an energy to the body. God has given us a beating heart that is independent of anything outside itself. It has a rythm, a beat you can feel when you touch your pulse, an electrical current that registers on medical equipment. But For us, Christians know that God sustains us and that by His hand we have breath, have life and healing in our body….So of course Satan is going to introduce something that sounds legit like energy healings. If you agree that there is an energy to the body then an energy healing sounds appropriate, right? So why does emotion code therapy fall under that type of category of Satan wanting to distort and/or destroy it…emotion code healing, in a very simplistic explanation, is a therapy that locates and dislodges trauma trapped in the body. We all know that the body holds trauma and sometimes it gets so many layers buried on top of it that we loose sight of what the problem could be. Using the powerful name of Jesus and inviting Holy Spirit to discern trauma hidden in the body, people are finding healing and breakthrough for physical ailments that have no medical explanation, mental health is restored, anxiety is gone people are being set free from trauma. My favorite is set free from past trauma that the body has held onto. One of the unique things about emotion code healing is that It addresses the unique way that God has created us as mind/body/spirit/soul. The intricacies with which God has created us can only be fully appreciated and accessed by the One who knows His creation. Calling on God's name for the restoration of our mind or our body is the only true source of healing. Please know that I'm not trying to twist anybodies arm on this. Do like I did, check it out. Bring your concerns to God. Talk with Him about you fears. Give Him space to speak His truth to you. Here are 3 scriptures that you can start to engage God's heart about mental and emotional healing and ask Him to show you what it means to have a crushed spirit (something that is mental and/or emotional) and how it can dry up your bones (a physical manifestation): Proverbs 18:14 “A man's spirit will endure sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?” Proverbs 15:13 “A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed” Proverbs 17:22 “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” As solid Christians we know to stay away from anyone who calls on any other name, other than that of Jesus Christ for healing. We steer clear from those who would try to lead us to believe that crystals have some sort of magical powers. So when it comes to emotion code therapy we're not looking for anything other than someone who calls on the name of Jesus, talks to Holy Spirit. In my research I even found professed Christian sites that used crystals as part of their healing process. That's a big fat no. Anything that deviates from God's name as the healing power is a strong no. Back to my guest, Eileen. She is a solid Christian sold out on the love of Jesus. She and her husband came to the knowledge of Christ during the Jesus Revolution era. That in itself is an interesting aspect of her story and if you'd like to hear more about that then check out the episode she did with me on March 28th 2023 titled When a Husband disengages, God's love is enough” But back to the current topic at hand. When it comes to Eileen's daily pursuit of God's heart, there's no better day for her than inviting the Holy Spirit to give her discernment that allows her to lead God's children into breakthrough and healing. In this episode she talks about the journey God has taken her on over the past 30 years working with the human body. She goes into detail telling you what she's learned and how it impacted her so I'll simply give a quick overview. From being the first woman reserve firefighter with the city of Kirkland Washington, an EMT who worked in the ER, massage therapist and then emotion code practitioner. At every phase she's learned how miraculous the body is and the intimacy of God's care for His beloved children. After listening to Eileen, it's very intriguing to me to understand how the body has the ability to heal on a physical level, say bruises, cuts, breaks, surgery, and yet there can be additional damage on a mental or emotional level. It is becoming very apparent that to fully heal from various traumas against/to/in the body, it will also entail addressing the mental and emotional impact as well. Further fascinating to me is the way the body communicates with the other parts of the body, specifically the brain. The body can have a whole conversation going on within itself and we can totally miss it. And yet it cries out to us, indicating where we need to take a closer look, calling us, demanding us to find a source of healing. All using the natural alarm system given to us by God himself which is our emotions. Listen in to these amazing examples that Eileen gives us of how the body conveys its need internally as well as externally. For me, it's another beautiful display of God's Sovereign design and the intimacy with which He created us. Live Loved and Thrive! It was a new era in Washington D.C. and the United States of America. Finally, the great gash in modern American history, The Vietnam War and the Watergate Crisis, was in the rearview mirror. It was all symbolized by a new American President from Georgia, who had risen out of seemingly nowhere to be elected President. He represented a refreshing change, with a big toothy smile, and Baptist Minister like promise that he would never lie to the American People, a peanut farmer ushered in an outsider tenure, and rested away the reigns of power from the Washington insiders many saw as having nearly driven the country off a cliff. Now Jimmy Carter would address the nation and do something we had not seen since the days of Thomas Jefferson in the Presidency. He got out of the limousine and walked the full length of Pennsylvania Avenue. It was as shocking in the moment as it was refreshing for the American People to see for themselves a new President, a President who was one of us. In this episode we let you relive the Inauguration of Jimmy Carter, his full address, and a good chunk of his walk down Pennsylvania Avenue as though you were right there watching it as it happened. In this episode, I discuss some of my thoughts on apologetics (giving a defense for one's faith), and how to do this "irenically" (peacefully). I also give some brief remarks regarding Dr. Gavin Ortlund. Gavin is a Baptist Minister who holds his doctorate in Historical Theology. He has had a presence on YouTube for quite awhile, often doing irenic apologetics applicable to inter-Christian dialogue (mainly between Protestants, Catholics, and Eastern Orthodox). Additionally I give my thoughts on why inter-Christian dialogue is not usually productive when we only argue from the Holy Scriptures. www.catholicisminthecar.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/parker-zurbuch6/support

This week: the recent opening of Edward Hopper's New York at the Whitney Museum has reignited a controversy over the provenance of some of his works. We talk to the leading Hopper scholar Gail Levin about the story of Arthayer R. Sanborn, a Baptist Minister who befriended the Hopper family and eventually amassed a vast collection of memorabilia and art, some of which is in the Whitney Museum's exhibition. J. Frank Norris rose to fame as the controversial fundamentalist pastor of America's first megachurch, the First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. He used his pulpit, his newspaper and his radio station to battle his enemies in unscrupulous ways, and when one angry local businessman named Dexter Chipps marched into his office in July of 1926 to confront him about his tactics, Norris pulled out a gun and shot him dead. My guest, David R. Stokes, is an ordained minister, broadcaster and author, and he talks in detail about Norris's rise to religious stardom, his use of sensationalist sermons to attract membership, his sordid association with the Ku Klux Klan, and the dramatic courtroom spectacle that followed this infamous Texas slaying. His book is called "Apparent Danger: The Pastor of America's First Megachurch and the Texas Murder Trial of the Decade in the 1920s".
