This week, Marcus Luttrell and former U.S. Air Force PJ and combat rescue officer, Jonathan Harmon, pick up where they left off in their last episode, bringing to the table a deep dive discussion regarding the details of how Jonathan was able to reasonably calculate Marcus' direction and future location during the Operation Red Wings series of events in Afghanistan in June, 2005. Many details of that op are included in today's discussion. It has now been 18 years since Operation Red Wings occurred. NOTE: “PJ” (Air Force Pararescuemen) are the only DOD elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery (PR) to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. Listen in as Jonathan & Marcus discuss the details of the efforts it took to bring Marcus home as the lone survivor of that operation. In this episode you will hear: • He [Matt Axelson] had made it close to a village and ended up being shot and killed. And then a villager took his body even further away and buried it. (4:27) • The best record we have [of Operation Red Wings] is from Marcus' memory. (5:24) • I think the American public would find it completely fascinating to learn what efforts our government will go to, to bring their people home. (10:24) • What if you had the ability - and we knew there was a television close by - and you're being held in a foreign country. It [a discrete message] could be so much as just a message on the television as simple as a small American flag on the screen. (11:55) • If you can think of the worst day of your entire life, and how despondent you can be - that's every day in captivity. (13:17) • He [Marcus' primary target] - disappeared through an air strike. (18:31) • So I hand my map off, [and proceeds to list his specific findings] and predict where they would end up, and I'm told: “We're going to Afghanistan.” (23:36) • The two [sources of information - the Army's findings and Jonathan's findings] validated one another. So we had a location and we had confirmation. (28:07) • For those that don't know, we stripped that aircraft down. We took nothing that wasn't necessary. (30:00) • I like to call it a recovery – not of remains – but of a person because rescue would imply that we are rescuing you from our friendly forces. That's not necessarily the case. (30:58) • I think the first thing [that should happen to Marcus after his recovery] is that and he needed to get a full blown medical evaluation. (33:27) • Doc Dickens will convince you that you are superman. You're the fullest expression of yourself. (38:32) • If there was a father figure for all of us – it was him [Doc Dickens]. (40:29) • One has to consider the gravity of the circumstances [of Operation Red Wings]. The single most loss of life in the history of the United States Navy SEALS just happened. (42:27) • To be given the clothing of the village elder is a personification of being him himself. (51:10) • [Jonathan telling Marcus] Your adherence to your faith in captivity was unique among all stories I've ever heard. (51:48) • If you pull the John Wayne act [while in enemy captivity], you're gonna get tortured and killed. (53:52) • He [Marcus] rewrote singlehandedly a lot of our resistance posture training because we were fighting a different kind of enemy that we didn't write manuals for. (56:10) • [Marcus] They would laugh at me because I would fall down, and I just kept trying. I would fail all the time. I can't believe they kept me. (60:19) • [Jonathan to Marcus] I have a question to ask you and I want you to think about this. Do you want to continue to operate? Or do you want to be a hero? And he thinks about it and says, “Fuck, man. I wanna operate.” (71:58) • We learned early on that asking permission wasn't gonna work. The very first thing I learned from the SEALS – beg for forgiveness. (87:55)
In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus has a deep dive conversation with U.S. Air Force PJ, and combat rescue officer, Jonathan Harmon. NOTE: “PJ” (Air Force Pararescuemen) are the only DOD elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery (PR) to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. Jonathan was instrumental in successfully locating Marcus in Afghanistan with the most miniscule of data which facilitated his subsequent rescue. Listen in to Jonathan's fascinating details of all that it takes to bring our soldiers home. In this episode you will hear: • My Aunt was a WASP (Women's Auxiliary Service Pilot). She flew aircraft across the Atlantic, and trained other pilots. They would test and assure that an aircraft was safe to fly. (10:06) • I had absolutely no intention of joining the military. I was into skating & surfboarding. (16:28) • I loved skydiving. I was with my peeps for the first time in my life. (23:23) • [Red ants] get real pissed off when you do 8 counts on top of them. (29:57) • [In Afghanistan rescue missions] you're out there rescuing kids and village elders. You want to let them know that you stand shoulder to shoulder with them. You're not gonna leave ‘em high and dry. (51:09) • It wasn't that I traded a life for a degree, but that how it felt. I promised myself that I would never allow my education get in the way of my job. (65:33) • One of the best things we learned was that one of the best medicines, sometimes, is lead. (70:12) • Most people don't know that 1003 Victor became known as Iraqi Freedom. (75:42) • I had the chance to coordinate about 1,000 rescue missions. Recovery missions as well as rescue missions. (76:05) • Reintegration is the process that returns people with homer, helping them transition back from captivity or isolation, back to their units and families so they can become “value added.” (78:18) • We're seeing Post traumatic stress in epic proportions. (79:26) • As a PJ, we focus on medical – combat medicine. (80:41) • I can't declare a personnel recovery event, because they're not my forces. (91:38) • It's important to know that a report has to come through a channel that is bonafide. (91:47) • [Operation Red Wings - After a series of signals and analysis, I thought] what I feel like is that I've got somebody on the run. And I'm really certain it's an American, because of where they're running and how they're running. And it gave me a confidence factor that I had at least one survivor. [97:34)

I've known Mark for a little over 10 years now. He came to me looking for pain relief at my first studio in Old Town Salinas. He believed in my craft so much that he offered to help create Live Well's internet presence and take it out of the stone age. It wasn't easy but we did it. I hardly see the guy now that he is living on Colorado but man when I do, it is always a great time.Mark grew up in agriculture, with both of his parents working in the agricultural Industry in and around Salinas CA, and is knowledgeable in horticulture and growing. He attended college at Cuesta College, then Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida with a wrestling scholarship, was in the ROTC, and eventually joined Air Force Pararescue. He is 3rd generation military in his family. Flying planes, jumping out of planes (over 50 military jumps, aside from over 150 civilian jumps,) pararescue in Alaska and along the South border of the United States. Mark shared his journey of determination and commitment to acquire the coveted beret of the Air Force PJ. His life experiences, and familial roots heavily influence the moves he makes in life. An entrepreneur, business owner, father, youtuber, cannabis expert, flat earth theorist and so much more, there is no subject too taboo, and no stone left unturned in this podcast. He talks about getting called out for a patient that was hit in the face by a crowbar. He and his crew were launched out for a helicopter crash where they found some of the survivors floating after the crash. Next we transition into his career as an Air Force PJ. He talks about responding to a helicopter crash that happened as they were going into battle. How the habit of being calm and taking a minute “not to run to your death” stuck with him for future deployments. We end by talking about a good mindset to maintain for everyday life and what he is doing with his current business. Aaron Love joined the Air Force shortly after 9/11 to become a Pararescueman, or “PJ” as they are more commonly known. PJs are expert combat medical professionals capable of providing life-saving measures in hostile areas, as part of the Air Force's special operations force. A few missteps along the way though, nearly derailed Aaron’s pursuit of becoming a PJ. But Aaron’s desire to succeed in one the military’s most difficult training and qualification pipelines, ultimately led him to earning the title of Air Force PJ and deploying in support of the Global War on Terror. In this episode, Aaron talks about operating as a PJ in combat; the highs and lows, and what it’s like when the reality of war sets in and there’s one fellow soldier you can’t bring home alive. Today, in the true spirit and path of a Warrior, Aaron also continues to prepare the next generation of special warfare servicemembers through his own podcast and website, called "Ones Ready", while still serving on active duty. Aaron has led an inspiring career as a PJ, and the only way to dig into it is to listen to Aaron talk about it firsthand, on this latest edition of HAZARD GROUND! www.onesready.com Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors at www.hazardground.com/sponsors! He is credited with making roughly 5,325 rescues during his 20 year career in the Air Force. That's an average of approximately 5 rescues each week for 20 years straight! Mike Maroney joined the Air Force to become a PJ. He says he joined the military to earn his keep for living in a free country. And when you look at what he's done during his military career, it's clear he's done more than earn his keep. He's saved the lives of not only American servicemembers, but also those of Coalition Forces, civilians during humanitarian missions, and even the enemy - proving he's dedicated to something much, much bigger than himself. Maroney continues to train and prepare individuals for special operations careers, even now that he's out of uniform. This week we are talking about the Air Force PJ leadership style. Leading a dynamic organization such as an office of emergency management can be challenging. I had the opportunity to Lt.Col Joseph Barnard who worked his way from enlisted to lead the highly trained Air Force Para Jumpers Rescue Team (PJ). The insights that Joseph shares with us in this interview will change your paradigm on leadership. Guest BioBio - Joe Barnard is a retired USAF Lt Colonel. His 33 year military career started in1982 when he joined the Army as infantryman at the age of 17 from his parentshome in Pembroke Pines, FL. After his Army career, which included living in VicenzaItaly for two years, Joe returned to South Florida and worked varying warehouseand delivery driver jobs as well as being a lifeguard atseveral South Florida beaches. In 1988, Joe joined the USAF, 301 st Rescue Squadron atHomestead AFB as a Pararescueman. He remained inthe 301 st through Hurricane Andrew, and helpedfacilitate the unit’s move to Patrick AFB. Joe marriedMeghan in 1991. With a one-year-old son and anotheron the way, in 1997, he took a position as a PararescueInstructor at Kirtland AFB, NM. Joe was qualified toteach and lead all blocks of instruction: Aircraft and Jump Ops, Weapons-Tactics,Technical Rope, C2 and Dirt Medicine. He was also a member of the Special Tacticsand Recovery Specialist (STaRS) Parachute Demonstration Team. With a stern push from a young wife who wanted a better life for her family, in 1998Joe started college and received his bachelor’s degree in 2000 by attending classesevery weekend from 7-5 both Saturday and Sunday, ultimately leading to hiscommission as an officer in February of 2001. Joe was selected out of OTS as the 4thCombat Rescue Officer, a new career field the Air Force created to lead andcommand Pararescueman and SERE specialist. Joe completes his masters degree in2007.His last 15 years as an officer were a blur except for those two tours in Hawaii. Lotsof surfing and SEA travel. When not in the Pacific, multiple deployments presentedcomplex leadership challenges which he took head on. Post 9/11 years werebookend by death of teammates and success in harrowing missions. In the middlewas a tour as the first CRO to command the Pararescue School, where he was firedafter a year. That assignment is a book in itself.During his entire career, Joe unapologetically took on the overwhelming briefcaseattitude of the conventional Air Force with his backpack mentality on behalf of hismission and men. Ultimate career satisfaction came as Joe was selected for and hadtwo amazing years as the 38 th Rescue Squadron Commander. He and his team did itright, pushing forward many progressive training methods that are still in placetoday. As Joe turned 52, and his youngest son was a year away from College. It was time.He had done all he could do. Admittedly, he grew dissatisfied with DoD directionand with the vice grip sequestration and continuing resolution put on the force. Hepurposely retired without fan fair. Fully satisfied that he left it all on the table andenergized to be a capitalist in his next life. But first…A sabbatical at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017 was well deserved. As Joe haddone with his oldest son, he taught his youngest son to skydive and they took acouple of surf trips to Costa Rica and Baja. Once he was in in college, Meghan and Joeput their household belongings in storage and traveled Southeast Asia – Singapore,Bali and Thailand for four months.Back in the states, his job search started in early 2018. “It was fun, I interviewedthem more than they interviewed me. I want my second life to be epic.”Joe settled on a small company that installs wireless infrastructure for Verizon andTMobile. He loves it, its complex. He has daily influence over 32m in revenue, as hequickly took to running the sales pipeline, P&L of three divisions, HR, logistics andall operations. Likely not Joe’s final resting place.“I desire more responsibility, complexity and a more progressive executive team towork with, but I started in a great place for my capitalistic journey. I validated thatmy military leadership traits and problem solving abilities absolutely transfer to afor profit organization. I love every minute of it. Meghan and I have big plans for ourfuture.”Joe and Meghan reside in Neptune Beach, a costal community in Jacksonville FL.Concerned by the high divorce rate and broken families a military life can create. They are developing a program to help young married Special Operation couples notonly stay, but thrive together during and after their service to this great nation.Links LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephbarnard/Email: Joe.bd.33@gmail.comAdvertisersTitan HST https://www.titanhst.com/
Joining us this episode are previous guests of the show Doug Kechijian & CJ Woodruff. To refresh you on both of these guys, Doug is a retired Air Force PJ, physical therapist, and current CEO of Resilient Performance Systems, and CJ is a retired Marine, personal trainer, and social media personality. I decided to pair them up for a discussion because fitness is not only a huge part of military readiness, but there's also just a major demographic of listeners with a love for this subject matter. As you'll hear, although physical therapy and personal training are two separate routes in this field, these guys see eye to eye on quite a lot. We cover supplementation, government regulation and insurance issues in their respective professions, and what they feel qualifies for military effectiveness. We also cover my own article for The Loadout Room that went up last week titled, "E.A.R.N. - A simple but effective way of mastering your fitness regimen," and you'll hear why CJ and I share a great deal of respect for three-time Mr. Olympia Frank Zane. One of our listeners Sean also made me aware of an original Women's Army Corps officer and World War II veteran Sara Parsons celebrating her 100th birthday that wants nothing more than cards from all of you out there. So check out that article from Wausau, Wisconsin's ABC affiliate on where to send them. Be sure to visit Resilient Performance Training online at ResilientPerformance.com, which links to all of their social media and podcast, and follow CJ on Instagram @CJWoodruffOfficial. We cover quite a lot of material on this episode of SOFREP Radio. To start off the show, our friend Fred Galvin is back on with us, this time with some more unfortunate news due to the recent death of Congressman Walter Jones. For those who don’t know, Jones was instrumental in helping Fred and his men that were a part of MARSOC 7 become vindicated. As you’ll hear Marine Corps Major Galvin say, Jones personally vowed to him in what was expected to be his final term in office, that he would fight to clear their names. He kept his promise. From there, friend of the show and former Air Force PJ, BK joins us. Many of you know BK from his writings, his podcast, and of course, his hammering of social justice warriors and #WokeVets via Twitter. Well, after several suspensions, BK has now been tossed off the platform and is forced to Tweet under a new account (which you can follow @BKActualPodcast.) We have a funny yet thought provoking discussion about the de-platforming of figures on social media and whether or not it tends to be politically driven. As usual, BK’s appearances are not for the easily offended. Last we end on an urgent note. Another friend of the show, Rob Trivino, is in need of your help. The former Special Missions Unit operator recently suffered a life altering condition that is sure to cost his family a great sum of expenses. A GoFundMe has been set up by those verified to be close with Rob, and he needs your help in reaching their goal. In great news, as of now, over $60K has been raised for the former operator, so let’s get this audience engaged and put them over the finish line. Rob fought for us, let’s fight for him. https://www.gofundme.com/robert-quotratquot-trivino? Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
Doug Kechijian is the CEO of Resilient Performance Systems, a small business based out of New York that prides itself on helping others to achieve their physical goals through it’s focus on sports medicine, performance training, education, and consulting. Prior to receiving his education in physical therapy and co-founding the company, Doug served as a Air Force PJ providing troops with technical rescue capability and emergency medical care while deployed. It’s often said that we don’t have many Air Force Pararescue guys on the show, so much of the 2+ hours of this episode is devoted to hearing from Doug about what guys from his military background do exactly. Growing up in Manhasset, NY, Doug was also a personal friend of James Regan. As many of you know, Regan was a revered Army Ranger killed in action while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. You’ll get to hear about their adolescence together and exactly what type of a guy that Sgt. James Regan was. He is dearly missed over a decade later. We also get into the physical fitness end of things including Doug’s philosophy on PT and overall health. Also on this episode is Loadout Room writer Rex Nanorum. Rex gives us a recap of SHOT Show 2019, what was new, and some of the badass gear now on his wish list. He also recaps Crate Club‘s exclusive Oasis for Villains party that took place there. We get some laughs as well hearing the hilarious story behind why Rex doesn’t use his real name when writing. Crank it up and enjoy!
