Hey #AmWriters, Jennie here. I'm excited to welcome editor and publishing strategist, AJ Harper to the show to talk about the art of helping writers do their best work. AJ helps nonfiction authors write foundational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. She was part of the writing coaching team for TEDx Cambridge, one of the largest TED events in the world. As a ghost writer and a developmental editor, AJ has worked with business writers of all kinds, guiding them to bestseller lists and to many millions of copies sold. She's worked on 10 books with business writer Mike Michalowicz, including Profit First: Transform Your Business From a Cash Eating Monster to a Money Making Machine. Her own book on writing came out in 2023. It's called Write A Must Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives, Including Your Own. This book is one of the best books on writing nonfiction I've ever read and it's one of the best books on writing period, which is why I wanted to have AJ come on and talk to us. Our conversation will be incredibly helpful for anyone writing nonfiction, but also for people writing fiction and memoir. AJ is just really smart about story structure, thinking about the reader, and fine tuning your ear for good writing. Her story about how she stepped out from behind the ghostwriting curtain to raise her own voice and claim her own authority is riveting.Books mentioned in the episode:Little Women, Louisa M. AlcottThe Trumpet of the Swan, E.B. WhiteCaddie Woodlawn, Carol Ryrie BrinkHey readers—KJ here. This episode of #AmWriting is brought to you by my latest, Playing the Witch Card. I wrote this at a moment when I needed more magic in my life—but it turned out to be a book about how until we know who we are and what makes us happy, even magic doesn't help. My main character, Flair, is a total control freak who fears the chaos created by her family deck of Tarot cards and the cookies it inspires her to make until she decides that she can harness their power to control the world and people around her—but that's not what the cards are for at all. I was inspired by what I see as the real magic of Tarot cards—and tea leaves and palm reading and every form of oracle: they help us to see and understand our own stories. As someone for whom stories are pretty much everything, I love that. You can buy Playing the Witch Card on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org and my local indie—and I hope you'll love it too. “Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it,” shares AJ Harper, editor and publishing strategist, head writing coach for Heroic Public Speaking, writing partner to business author Mike Michalowicz, and author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. Today, AJ calls on her years of experience working with bestselling authors to talk about how to write a must-read book. The first step to writing a book is knowing who your reader is. By knowing exactly who you are writing for, what they need, and what they perceive is standing in their way, you can write a book that speaks directly to their experience. When people feel seen on the first page of a book, they are likely to continue reading. The next step is to get very clear on your core message. This should be a fundamental truth that can create change in the reader even if that message is the only thing they read. Once you have written a book with a specific reader in mind and a clear core message, the most important thing to do is just to not give up! Stay persistent and put the time and work into your publishing plan and marketing strategies for selling your book.If you have been wanting to write a book that will help other people, you need to first decide who exactly you want to write for. What change are you hoping for the reader to make? How do you want them to feel when they read your book? These are all things to consider before getting to the publishing or marketing steps. Quotes“If you're writing a book that's designed to help someone, you have to know who that someone is.” (8:33-8:37 | AJ)“If they can see themselves on the first page where you are honoring their experience and they feel like you get them, they're going to keep turning the page.” (10:38-10:48 | AJ)“Knowing your reader is such a huge part of not just writing and editing the book, but how you position it in the marketplace.” (11:50-11:56 | AJ)“A book is not about something, it's for someone.” (12:30-12:33 | AJ) “Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it.” (28:42-28:56 | AJ)“There's very few things on earth that are more transformational than a book.” (35:18-35:23 | AJ)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with AJ HarperLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anjanetteharper/Website: https://ajharper.comConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com ,

Have you heard the saying, "The book is the new business card?"—just something you can crank out and put on Amazon in a matter of days, in order to boost your visibility? Well, today's guest is here to explain why that is absolutely the wrong reason to publish a book—and the wrong way to do it. By cutting corners, investing as little as possible, and thinking only of yourself rather than your reader, you'd essentially be creating a throwaway marketing piece (which is exactly the fate of most business cards!) The function of any worthwhile nonfiction book is to change lives, and AJ Harper is on a mission to do just that.As a developmental editor, ghostwriter, and publishing strategist, AJ has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies and first timers to New York Times bestsellers like Mike Michalowicz, author of Profit First. She is also the author of her own nonfiction book, Write a Must-Read, which teaches you how to conceptualize and write a nonfiction book that will actually make people want to buy and read it. In this episode, you'll learn:The hard truth about whether "everyone has a book in them."AJ's proven framework for crafting a life-changing book. (“A book is not about something. A book is for someone.”)How to identify your ideal reader. (It's not just about demographics.)How to determine which parts of your life belong in your memoir. The difference between a book's core message and its promise—and why clearly identifying those two things will set you up for success. For more, check out:ajharper.commaggielangrick.comwonderwell.pressAnd follow:instagram.com/maggielangrickinstagram.com/wonderwellpressinstagram.com/selfishgiftpodcast

I've been sharing a lot of behind-the-scenes of what it takes to write, publish, and promote a book. But one thing that often gets overlooked in the writing process is editing. I like this quote from Mike Lee where he says, “The first draft reveals the art; revision reveals the artist.” Today, I get cozy with editor and publishing strategist AJ Harper. In this episode, we talk about how authors can find their voice, write books based on the change you want to see in the world, and why it's important not to give up in the dip when marketing your book. AJ Harper helps authors write transformational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. As ghostwriter and as developmental editor, she has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. AJ teaches her method in Top Three Book Workshop and the Must-Read Editing Workshop at https://ajharper.com. Together they've written nine books, including Profit First. What you'll hear (and don't want to miss!): :: Defining what “career authorship” is all about :: Why it's important to keep your writing close until you are ready and the time is right to share it with others :: AJ's expert tips for choosing an editor that is right for you and what you need to consider with this decision :: How gaining clarity in your book and editing process will allow you to stand up for your book with conviction :: Her own experience as a ghostwriter and co-writer, and how that compares to now writing her very own book and the pressures that come with doing this :: Why identifying your core message is essential in book writing, and what AJ's core message was in her own book You can find the full show notes from this episode over at jadahsellner.com/_197 Buy yourself a copy of my book She Builds: The Anti-Hustle Guide to Grow Your Business and Nourish Your Life (or gift it to a friend) at shebuilds.com. AJ understands how to balance the needs of authors and readers to protect an author's true intentions. On our Wise Walk, open your mind to realize your vision for your book and learn to not compromise on what value you want to provide for readers. You'll get useful ideas on breaking past myths and releasing the lies we tell ourselves that keep us from fully engaging our work. We're dispelling book publishing misinformation and sharing how book writing can be a reflective process. Come with me as we reflect on AJ's fundamentals and these Wise Walk questions: Who is your ideal reader? Who are the people you want to help? What is your core message? What is a promise you can commit to and deliver on? AJ believes that if an author is struggling to get past the outline or the first chapter of their book, they're probably not writing the book they're meant to write. You have something inside of you that you want to share. You need to find out how to pull away the false filters that distort your message. You should only want filters that honor your truth and cut out distractions. Advocate for yourself and write great books with these Wise Walk questions: How connected are you to your voice? Where in life are you adopting someone else's voice? Where can you exercise validating your own voice and style? What are the myths you adopted as you grew up, and how can you find your actual truth? I think they should have read this book as you will hear, AJ gives you a pretty easy system to follow to keep on track to write a book that delivers. That does not mean it is easy to do but it is an excellent system. I am currently reading a similar book Find Your Red Thread: Make Your Big Ideas Irresistible by Tamsen Webster that I mention during the episode. It discusses a similar process to refine your ideas that I have found useful. For the full show notes and resources mentioned in the episode click here.

Today's episode is a very special interview with my good friend and editor, AJ Harper, who has done more for raising the bar for writing good books than anyone I know. Generally, a ‘good' book doesn't simply function as a “better business card” or marketing tool for a personal brand or business. Rather, a ‘good' book becomes a “must-read” that readers actively recommend to others. In this conversation, AJ shares her “reader-first” philosophy and her insights into how to write a perennial bestseller that truly serves your reading audience. Using her wealth of experience and knowledge, AJ talks us through how a book can become a “top three book” that changes lives (including your own!). She also gives us a sneak peek into her own new book, Write a Must Read.
