Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Lovefest 2025 was at Linnaea Farm on Saturday August 9th. Cortes Currents wandered through the crowd asking people about Lovefest and why they kept coming back. In the process, I also recorded a few short clips of the music and asked one of the principal organizers, Benji Coey about this year's program. Howie Roman - “It started with 50 Summers of Love, which was our great hippie festival. People really dug out their old clothes. Women in long skirts; guys in bell bottoms. There was an exhibit up in the school of what you looked like in '67, and it was very cool. The demand was that they keep it going. So I believe this is the sixth year.” Toni Smorodin - “I've been coming since the very beginning. I think it was 2017. So the idea of a Lovefest, reincarnation, music and people coming together: It really excited me, especially in a beautiful location like Linnaea.” Adam Schick from Linnaea Farm - “It's great having Lovefest here on the farm. It's a great way to spend an afternoon in August, showcasing what a beautiful place I get to live in all the time.” Cortes Currents - Tell me about this year's lineup, and what's changed? Benji Coey - “This year we've got quite a few new bands who haven't been here before. One or two classics, who people on the island will know of. For example, Louis Belcourt is a classic, but if you're talking big differences, we've got a different end of the evening this year. For the last couple of years we finished with the Cuban Act, this year ending with the Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness.” “So imagine if you can time traveling Egyptian space lords playing improvised electronica to a visual track of lasers and smoke machines. That's what's gonna culminate the evening tonight. We have Canada's best tribute to the Great Divide, which includes Rex Weyler's son Jack Weyler, a wonderful Hammond organ player and Dylan Stone, who's another island favorite. We've got Lily Fawn, who has been on the BC music scene for about 15-20 years. We're doing the music of David Lynch. As you know, David Lynch is a directing legend in Canadian film history. Twin Peaks obviously is one of his most famous pieces, so the band are going to play a selection of music from Twin Peaks and from some of David Lynch's other works. It'll be a theatrical element. We're gonna do that at sunset.” Ann Mortifee - “I love to feast on love and there are so many great people here, from our community, and from afar. I love this day because it is a Lovefest where people of talent and all different kinds of things can come and dance, enjoy and visit.” Amy Harding from the Linnaea Farm food booth - “It's very exciting and vibrant and beautiful and I love feeling that energy.” Cortes Currents - It seems like there's always the McKenty element to Lovefest, whether it's onstage or as support. Francis McKenty - “Yep, and sometimes both, but it's a fun chance to get together and work backstage, with all of my brothers, helping make Cortes' most amazing music festival as amazing as it can be.” Greg Osoba - “This is my first year volunteering, but I've had the great pleasure to play at Lovefest. I was with Six Foot Johnson on, gosh, at least four occasions. I'm very happy with that. It's a great opportunity for some less experienced players to get their feet wet, as well as some very seasoned professionals. I just thought this is a great way to give back and it's wonderful to greet all the happy attendees who are looking forward to what Lovefest has to offer.” Aland from Victoria - “I've been here since the beginning, I was five, maybe. It's a really fun experience and there's always music, and it's a really nice time to just connect to everyone.” Her sister Nim - “We used to live here full time and we still come here because it's an awesome community and great music.” Anastasia Avvakumova - “It feels like home.”

With transparency, insight, and a healthy dose of humor, Alan challenges the cultural obsession with hustle and reminds us that rest isn't a luxury—it's a divine command rooted in creation itself.Discover how God's design for rest isn't just spiritual—it's emotional, physical, and even ecological. You'll walk away with practical tools to:Understand the KUW Framework (Knowledge, Understanding, Wisdom)Break free from the burnout cycleSet life-giving boundariesRecover the Sabbath as a gift, not a guilt tripWhether you're a weary parent, an overworked professional, or a passionate leader running on empty—this episode will remind you that God has already given you Permission to Pause.
Yeah, we'll make the same disclaimer we made the last time we talked about shoegaze. We know the term is polarizing. We realize that it was coined by the press as a term of derision for what had previously been known as "the scene that celebrates itself." Legend has it that writer Andy Ross first used it in a Sounds review to describe how Moose singer/guitarist Russell Yates was constantly looking down at the lyrics he had taped to the floor and/or his guitar pedals. But, face it, you hear the term and you know exactly what it is...ethereal vocals, woozy melodies, ear-piercingly loud, effects-laden guitars, all awash in a psychedelic haze. Nowadays, the bands that play this kind of music wear the "shoegaze" badge with pride. But the O.G.s had to walk so you could run, kids. Hence, this week we are celebrating some of the great shoegaze albums of the 1990s. Joining us is the singer/songwriter/guitarist of '90s Vancouver cult shoegazers Movieland, Alan D. Boyd. Movieland has been honored with the first installment of an archival series from 604 Decades that takes a look back at Vancouver's rich, if unexplored arts history. This rarities and demos collection, Then & Now, proves that they should have been at the top of the marquee during their time. https://movieland1990.bandcamp.com/album/then-now After Movieland disbanded in 1994, Alan moved to the UK, and has enjoyed a long career as an acclaimed composer for TV ("Day of the Triffids") and film ("Four Strings Good"), as well performing in the folk trio Little Sparta (also featuring Susie Honeyman from the Mekons). As you would expect during an episode on shoegaze, we divert our attention to Canadian pop stars, the other Movielands, and have a rare (maybe the first time?) double Triple Crossover!
"There's only one CEO. There's only one leader and the best organizations are ones where there's an integration of leadership and a breaking up of the responsibilities. One person can't do everything. It's impossible...it's impossible. Whether its scaling or whether its reorganizing...whether its just running the business...its impossible."CPA, former Chairman and CEO of Baker Tilly US, and business strategist Alan D. Whitman is back on the program today and we're diving into some topics today that are as relevant for small business owners as they are for the CEOs of major companies. Alan and Jay are digging into whether or not its a good idea to turn your business brain off for a little bit around the holidays, making sure that you are spending time with your leaders, and why delegating is important so that things don't get missed and you don't get overwhelmed. If you do want to turn your business brain off for a bit, we highly recommend you do it after you've listened to this episode of The Culture Matters Podcast.

"Why we are here is to execute the strategy; to deliver great value to our clients. The result is we generate profits to our partners, our owners, our stakeholders. That's a shift from the sum of the parts to the whole made up of its parts."CPA, former Chairman and CEO of Baker Tilly US, and a great example of culture Alan D. Whitman is back on the program today to to give our listeners a deep dive into the big world of business. Alan and Jay are digging into some things that entrepreneurs who are just starting out need to know, why you need to give the people who report to you the green light to be straight and honest with you, and why it is always better for a leader to be loved for the accomplishments they achieved with their team instead of for allowing people to take their foot off of the gas. We couldn't think of a better way to kick off our Health Innovations Series than with Alan D. Widgerow, Chief Scientific Officer at Galderma and Head of Innovation at Alastin Skincare. Alan began his career in South Africa, where he was in private practice for over 20 years. He is currently Division Chief of Research at UC Irvine Medical Center and it's evident from speaking with him that his passion lies in the laboratory. But interestingly enough, he might have never ended up there if not for a fateful phone call…Alan was all set to go into a career in dentistry when a phone call quite literally changed the trajectory of his life. A voice at the other end of the line encouraged him to follow his passions towards medical school and plastic surgery and Alan never looked back. Alan describes plastic surgery as an “amalgamation of creativity and science” and that no two cases are the same. It's easy to see what drew him to such an-ever evolving field and how he's still fascinated over 20 years later. To hear more about Alan D. In this powerful message by Alan D. Blackmon Sr., we are called to consider ourselves and examine our own hearts before we rush to judge others. Using Galatians 5 and 6, Matthew 18, and Proverbs 6 as a guide, Alan outlines the biblical process of restoration and shows us how we can work towards healing broken relationships. He also identifies three reasons why we often avoid self-examination and become judgmental: pride, unresolved issues, and familiarity. If you're looking for a message that will challenge you to grow in humility, compassion, and grace, this is one you won't want to miss. Just the TWO wrongly disallowed goals, THREE stonewall penalties waved away and shameful escaping of a blatant red for Perisic's out of control two-footed lunge (plus Hojbjerg committing multiple yellow card offences and getting away with them), but it's all good because we had ANOTHER lovely apology for ONE of the 6 glaring and game-changing mistakes!
The gang discusses two papers about trilobite evolution and morphology. The first paper looks at disparity and taxonomic trends of trilobites across the Devonian, and the second paper looks at the unique tridents of Walliserops. Meanwhile, Amanda makes a choice, James does some unique functional morphology, and Curt critiques tilapia. Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The friends talk about two papers that look at small hard animals that live in the water and some of them can roll into a ball. The first paper looks at how these animals looked over time. They look at whether or not these animals looked more different when there were more different types of these animals around. This is not usually the case, for lot of animals how different the animals in the group look to each other is not just because to there being more types of animals. For this group that some can roll into a ball, it seems like they look a lot more different when there are also a lot of different types of them. So when something kills a lot of them, they also lose what makes them different. After a really bad time for these animals, only one group was left and we saw that they kind of looked the same for a long time until they all died. The second paper looks at one of these types of animals that had a weird thing on its nose. They try and find out what it could have used this weird thing for because it is very big and it does not move on its own so it probably would not be good for a lot of things. They look at some other animals that have things on their nose they use to fight each other for space and girls. While these animals are very different, they show some ways that this thing on the nose look like these other animals. So maybe they used this thing on their nose to fight each other.
