If there's one thing politicians do little of these days it's change their minds. But, that's exactly what North Carolina's General Assembly did in 2023. Ten years after the ACA was passed, and in a historic bipartisan move, they changed their minds and voted to expand Medicaid. NC Secretary of Health Kody Kinsley joined us to talk about what it took to get this done and how it's been going so far. We discuss:How to get stuff done in a politically divided stateOne move that would dramatically increase access to healthy food in America - automatically enroll all Medicaid beneficiaries in SNAP Why NC Medicaid has gone deep on peer to peer support for prenatal care and mental healthThe importance of building a better narrative about the role and value of public healthKody points out NC's strategy of investing in community organizations is creating both health and economic opportunities:“75% of our community based organizations are minority or women owned throughout those 33 counties. So, this isn't just about getting good access to what drives health in the long run. This is also about building that infrastructure and having a financing model that sustains it that is in the balance, a good value for the taxpayer.”Relevant LinksNC enrollment dashboardCrisis warmlineHealthy Opportunities pilots“NC Launches Additional Phone Support for People Experiencing Mental Illness or Substance Use Disorfer” [RELEASE]About Our GuestKody Kinsley serves as North Carolina's Secretary of Health & Human Services, overseeing a department with over 18,000 staff and a $38 billion budget. Everyone needs second chances. The golf analogy is a wonderful example of what God gives us a mulligan through Christ, to get back into a life with him as our Lord. But, it doesn't stop there, Christ covers all of our needs for multiple mulligans until we are reunited with him. So…After a successful nationwide theatrical release, Cinedigm tees up the faith and family film The Mulligan with an August 16 release date for On Demand, Digital and DVD. Based on the inspirational novel by Ken Blanchard and Wally Armstrong, the film follows a man trying to right the wrongs of his past as he learns that the game of life is best approached with a clear head. The powerful film about second chances stars Eric Close (American Sniper, Nashville), Pat Boone (A Cowgirl's Story, God's Not Dead 2) and Tanya Christiansen (I Still Believe, The Hate U Give). Outwardly, Paul (Close) has everything that he could possibly want. He's a successful businessman, motivational speaker and superstar on the golf course. But behind the persona, his world has fallen apart and his estrangement from his family has left him desperate to find anything to fill the void. When he gets teamed up with an old golf pro (Boone), Paul begins to realize that there is still time to set his world right…there's still time for a mulligan. Directed by Michael O. Sajbel (The Ultimate Gift, The Ride) the film reflects on the idea that having everything isn't everything and that the game of golf and the game of life have a lot in common. From taking the good shots with the bad, to knowing when to chip it and knowing when to rip it, we all look back at things we could have done differently. Co-written by Randall Eldridge, Rick Eldridge (The Ultimate Gift, Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius), Roland Eldridge and Jimmy Hager the film is based on the 2016 novel “The Mulligan: A Parable of Second Chances” by Blanchard and Armstrong. The film also stars Andrew Brodeur (Tall Girl, MacGyver), Charmin Lee (Westworld, The 5th Wave) and Debra Stipe (Full House, Father Figures), with guest appearances by PGA Professional Tom Leyman and Broadcasting legend Jim Nantz. The Mulligan was produced by Scotty Curlee, Eldridge and Stephan Schultze, with Eldridge also acting as Executive Producer. The inspiration for the film came from the early life of co-author PGA touring pro Wally Armstrong, who, like Paul, was mentored by a club pro at his hometown golf course. Originally an idea for a children's book, Armstrong and Blanchard created a deep and meaningful novel that has been enjoyed by young and old, where golf is more than just a game and second chances are never out of reach. “When I read this transformational book by Ken (Blanchard) and Wally (Armstrong), I immediately identified with it. As a husband, businessman and father, it can become difficult to give each role its respective place. Sometimes we stumble and we all need ‘second chances.' Add in being a life-long lover of the game of golf, the book really hit home for me. It has been an incredible experience telling the story of The Mulligan,” says Eldridge. Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/lQ89v0f3BsU Official Synopsis: An inspiring story about relationships, forgiveness and second chances. Paul McAllister seems to have it all as a successful businessman, but his life starts to fall apart. Guided by the wisdom and advice of an old golf pro, Paul learns about playing a good game both on and off the course. Based on the popular book, THE MULLIGAN is an inspiring reminder that second chances are only one shot away.

The purpose of the series is heighten awareness that although traditional Christian music may no longer be the dominant music style experienced in Christian Churches in the United States, the composition of new music in the traditional forms of hymns and anthems is thriving. In this episode we get the pleasure of experiencing the fruit of a long and wonderful partnership between lyricist, Dr. Mary Louise, 'Mel,' Bringle and composer Sally Ann Morris. Much of their music is intended for congregational singing. They share with us a smidgen of the range of their work and give us insights into the process of their partnership. One Last Mile is a fictional story of a talented but slightly arrogant high school track athlete named Eric who was certain he would be snagging a scholarship spot at any University he chose. He routinely won races but didn't always take his coaches directives seriously.mIn his senior year everything changed after an accident that left Eric with a broken ankle, and haunting images of his friend Buzzy's death. Buzzy was intellectually handicapped and Eric felt responsible for his death even though Buzzy was not supposed to have followed him into that abandoned home. Overcome with guilt, Eric left his home town of Brevard after his graduation to stay with his uncle for the summer. The summer turned into 2 years, and Eric didn't make any effort to keep in touch with his best friend Mary, or any of his other friends and running team mates. Although he was told that he may not run again after the accident, his doctor ended up clearing Eric for running, but told him to take things slow and didn't think that high level running would be possible again. Eric finally went back home to Brevard but realized that he had a lot of work to do to get his friends back, as well as any potential for a scholarship. Roger Saltsman in a first-time author and former distance runner at Brevard College from 1979-1981. This week on the show we have our first NOLS co-instructor interview. Shawn speaks with Rebecca Raynord and Gary Thompson who worked two epic canoeing courses together, one in Utah and one in Yukon.Rebecca started whitewater kayaking with a program at our high school on the Potomac River near Washington DC. She began teaching kayaking during the summer in college. After graduating from college with no firm plans, Rebecca decided to take a NOLS semester as a student in search of wilderness skills and leadership. She then continued teaching kayaking in the DC area for two years until returning to NOLS for her River Instructors Course in 2001. Rebecca worked for NOLS in the field and a program supervisor full time until August 2012, finishing with 231 weeks in the field. She mainly worked whitewater courses and some sea kayaking in Baja. Now Rebecca works as an emergency medicine doctor in an ER in Virginia. Gary grew up in South Carolina and has worked in outdoor education since 1998 including about 9 years instructing for NOLS. Currently living in McCall Idaho, he works as an instructor at the University of Idaho's McCall Outdoor Science School. A career highlight for Gary was going back to Brevard College to lead the Voice of the River's expedition across Argentine Patagonia. In 2014 Gary began a leadership consulting business, Redfish|Bluefish, INC  that continues to expand his leadership experience and knowledge.. Most of his field experience comes as a boating instructor, river guide, and trip leader in Idaho, Utah, Peru, and Argentina In this episode:   (03:07) Gary starts by telling us the story behind the low water in the Yampa River. It was his first NOLS course as an Instructor. They were leading a five-day canoe section of a month-long NOLS Paddling course. When they reached the river, they found the water significantly lower than expected, and there was just enough water that could be best described as a “foot deep” and “two canoes wide.” From leaving all the extra accessories behind and packing light, they had it bad when they looked downstream and only found boulders blocking their way – making them walking and dragging the canoes. The story gets funnier when they share the experiences of their students and what was their reaction towards it. But in the end, their optimism carried them off the edge.     (27:18) Rebecca talks about the early season Naval Academy course in Yukon mighty Hess river, where they had a group of midshipmen coming up ready for adventure and challenge. They explain how the course has a very challenging start. Long before they get to the Hess, they have to drag their canoes up a creek, hop on a tributary, go through the beaver pond, again hop on a tributary, then down make their way down into the river.     (32:13) Rebecca tells us that after reaching the Hess, they wanted the group to learn their Whitewater skills. While practicing upstream ferries, and got a student boat flipped, and the fast-moving water took it away. While Rebecca and her partner were chasing after the floating canoe, they ended up paddling far away from the group before they got the runaway boat to shore on an island at the end of a whitewater section. It quickly becomes very apparent that they were a long way from the group with four people's worth of stuff. Gary intrigued us more when he shares his part of the story where he is left to lead the rest of the group and find their missing mates with the canoe.      (42:30) Moving forward, Gary and Rebecca share how survival skills and quick decision-making helps them overcome most of the hardships they faced on the Yukon trip. They explain how they have learned the wide range of lessons and outdoor skill-building and how the strength to move forwards comes from within – all it takes to survive and thrive in the world is a little know-how and ingenuity.

Episode Notes Do you need a hit of motivation during this relentless time of pandemic? Maybe a little nudge to get you out of that recliner and do something productive? I can get it for you on the cheap. All you have to do is listen to Pride Connection Tuesday April 6 at 10 p.m. EST on ACB Radio Mainstream. Tune in and listen to the first part of an interview of Harvey Miller done by Dwayne Estes. Harvey was born with low vision and was told he would not lose the sight he had and relied on. Later in life he did lose his sight completely. Hear about Dr. Miller's early life in Salisbury, North Carolina and his beginning experiences with formal education. Learn about the ten years Harvey spent at the North Carolina School for the Blind and how he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Although it caused quite a stir amongst the faculty he did land a position as a music instructor at Brevard College in Brevard North Carolina. While teaching at Brevard College he managed to earn a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from Indiana University. Harvey's compositions have been performed world wide. He spent thirty years teaching at Brevard College as well as teaching classes Harvey conducted the college choir. Somehow he fit in being concert master for the Ashville Symphony Orchestra This is an awe inspiring story and not to be missed. The second part of the interview will focus on the book Harvey has written on Louis Braille's music and the music of his students. This will be fascinating for those who read Braille and use Braille's system for the notation of music.

Jennifer’s thoughts about self-publishing and distributors and why that’s important for composers. The story of how Jennifer has recognized that her anxiety was in getting in the way of her happiness and the story of her decision to seek help. She has been commissioned by ensembles and institutions across the United States, including the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, University of Texas at Austin, Bowling Green State University, Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, The Canales Project, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, among others. She is Assistant Professor of Composition at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, is the co-founder of North American New Opera Workshop, and has written articles for the e-zine NewMusicBox. In recent years, Jennifer has been increasingly drawn toward subjects that are political and even provocative. Her 2015 collaboration with librettist Kendall A, Prisoner of Conscience, sets to music statements made by the Russian punk-rock band Pussy Riot as they stood trial in Moscow for “hooliganism” and “religious hatred.” Quince Ensemble has performed the piece widely and has released a recording on their album Motherland with New Focus Recordings. Jennifer’s 2017 piece The Eyes of the World Are Upon You, commissioned by the University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble, reflects on the first-ever campus shooting in America, which took place at UT-Austin in 1966. Jennifer’s blog—on which she has catalogued more than 100 rejection letters from competitions, festivals, and prizes—is widely read and admired by professional musicians. She is particularly passionate about this project as a composition teacher, and enjoys removing the taboo around “failure” for her students. In addition to her professorship at Texas Tech, she is a member of the composition faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp. Jennifer deeply values the relationship that is created between composers and the communities with whom they collaborate. She has been composer-in-residence at Brevard College, University of Toledo, and the Vermont Symphony, and was in-residence at the Central Michigan University School of Music and the Alba Music Festival in Italy in 2018. She will be the Composer-in-Residence of the Women Composers Festival of Hartford in 2019. Jennifer Jolley took 2nd Place for the 2017–18 American Prize in Composition (Band/Wind Ensemble Division) and was a finalist for the the Symphony Number One Call for Scores. She holds degrees from the University of Southern California and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where her principal teachers included Stephen Hartke, Frank Ticheli, Michael Fiday, Joel Hoffman, and Douglas Knehans.

As part of MLK Convocation Week, the entire PC community is invited to the second annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. PC is thrilled to welcome Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu, the third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, as our keynote convocation speaker. Rev. Tutu is a nationally and internationally known human rights activist, development consultant, educator, and Episcopal priest. The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa has led Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu to become an activist for human rights. Those experiences taught how much we all lose when any of us is judged purely on physical attributes. In her speeches, she blends the passion for human dignity with humor and personal stories. Rev. Tutu is the third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu. She was born in South Africa and has also lived in Lesotho, the United Kingdom and the United States. She was educated in Swaziland, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and has divided her adult life between South Africa and the United States. Growing up the ‘daughter of …' has offered Rev. Tutu many opportunities and challenges in her life. Most important of these has been the challenge to find her own place in the world. She has taken up the challenge and channeled the opportunities that she has been given to raise her voice as a champion for the dignity of all. Her professional experience ranges from being a development consultant in West Africa, to being program coordinator for programs on race and gender and gender-based violence in education at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. In addition, Tutu has taught at the University of Hartford, University of Connecticut, and Brevard College in North Carolina. She started her public speaking as a college student at Berea College in Kentucky in the 1970's when she was invited to speak at churches, community groups and colleges and universities about her experiences growing up in apartheid South Africa. Since that time, she has become a much sought-after speaker to groups as varied as business associations, professional conferences, elected officials and church and civic organizations. Rev. Tutu has also led truth and reconciliation workshops for groups dealing with different types of conflict. Together with Rose Bator, she presents a workshop titled Building Bridges dealing with issues of race and racism. The two also lead women's retreats through their organization, Sister Sojourner. They are also writing a book provisionally titled I Don't Think of You as Black: Honest Conversations on Race and Racism. In addition, Rev. Tutu is a consultant to two organizations which reflect the breadth of her involvement in issues of human rights. The organizations are the Spiritual Alliance to Stop Intimate Violence, founded by renowned author Riane Eisler and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Betty Williams, and the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa. Rev. Tutu is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee and recently joined The Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, N.C. to work on racial and economic reconciliation issues across western North Carolina. She is a single mother of three.

She spent more than 10 years coaching, and then became so intrigued by athletics’ bigger picture, that she pivoted entirely to administration in 2008.  Beth’s ability to transition from a successful head coach to a high-level athletic administrator at Butler, the University of Minnesota, and UCONN is a jump that many coaches are interested in, and one Beth navigated perfectly.
