In a change to our regular format, and in advance of the expected release of a further three hostages, today's show features a conversation between me and Almog Meir-Jan. Almog was seized by Hamas on October 7th, 2023 and held hostage inside the Gaza Strip until he was rescued by Israel's security forces at the age of 21 in one of the most daring rescue operations ever undertaken by Israel. That operation, which took place on June 8th, 2024, was renamed Operation ARNON, after Y.A.M.A.M. operator, Chief Inspector Arnon Zmora, who was wounded by Hamas terrorists and later died of his wounds. Along with Almog, Noa Argamani, 26, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 41, were also rescued. On December 10th, 2023, I interviewed Almog in front of a live Manhattan Audience, to gauge his reflections on his time in captivity, his perspective on the rescue operation, his outlook on life now that he's freed, and his view on the need to redeem all of the remaining hostages. I also praised his mother, Orit, whom our organization escorted throughout her fight to ensure that Almog's plight remained at the forefront of public consciousness, and who we brought to address members of the U.S. House of Representatives, members of the Senate, and legislators in the British parliament and government.Support the showThe MirYam Institute. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. As the three hostages, Or Levy, Eli Sharabi and Ohad Ben Ami return to Israel, questions arise about what they knew of their families' fates as they were released. Fabian discusses some of the details about what each man learned upon coming home to Israel, whether Eli Sharabi found out that his wife and daughters had been killed from Hamas, the Red Cross or his family, and if Or Levy knew his wife Eynav had been killed before he was taken into captivity. Palestinians are allowed to return to northern Gaza, along the Netzarim Corridor, after the IDF cleared out its remaining positions, says Fabian, adding that Gazans are already approaching the area. With nine more days left in the ceasefire with Lebanon, Fabian discusses Israel's enforcement of the ceasefire agreement, and the additional understandings that allow Israel to act against any Hezbollah act, including its Saturday strikes against Hezbollah members at a strategic missile site, which Israel said were a blatant violation of the ceasefire. Following the Saturday IDF strike on a Hamas arms depot near Damascus, the first in more than a year, Fabian talks about the site as one that was known to the IDF. It was suspected that the arms could be used to attack IDF troops in the area. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Eli Sharabi, 52, Or Levy, 34, and Ohad Ben Ami, 56, are back home in Israel after 491 days of captivity. Sharabi was kidnapped from Kibbutz Be’eri when Hamas terrorists rampaged through southern Israel on October 7, 2023. His wife and daughters were murdered in their home’s safe room and he and his brother Yossi were taken captive. Brother Yossi has since been confirmed dead and Hamas is holding his body. Or Levy, 34, was kidnapped from the Supernova rave near Kibbutz Re’im on October 7. His wife Eynav was killed, and their now three-year-old son Almog has been staying with his grandparents since. Ohad Ben Ami, was kidnapped from Be’eri. His wife Raz Ben Ami was also abducted, and released as part of a week-long ceasefire in November 2023. We learn about initial health assessments and hear about the ceremony this morning, in which Hamas forced the men to speak onstage in Dir El Balak and thank the terror organization for their "good treatment." We discuss how the IDF is still operating in parts of the Gaza Strip and what is meant to happen in the next two weeks of phase 1 of the already mediated deal, even as phase 2 is still in process. Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi on Friday to reprimand the head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Shlomi Binder, after he reportedly warned during a military assessment meeting about potential security risks relating to US President Donald Trump’s plan to take over the Gaza Strip and displace its population. Fabian weighs in on this incident and what it may signify. We discusses what is happening on the ground in the West Bank as the IDF continues its almost three-week ongoing intensive counter-terrorism operation there. The Israeli Air Force carried out strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Thursday night, targeting weapons storage sites in the Nabatieh area and the Beqaa Valley. Fabian updates us on the extended truce in Lebanon and expected next steps ahead of the February 18 deadline. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates.
Escuchar audio

For five months, Michael Levy has inhabited a life that still feels foreign, but he is possessed by a mission to bring home his younger brother, Or, taken hostage by Hamas monsters, as he calls them, on October 7th. The youngest of three brothers, Or left for the Nova Music Festival early on the morning of October 7th with his wife, Eynav, to enjoy a carefree day in the sun. Their two-year-old son, Almog, was asleep. When the extended family awoke that day they entered a surreal Hell that never ends. Eynav was murdered and Or taken hostage. Almog cries every time they are mentioned and asks for them every day. The family does its best without really knowing how to navigate such an impossible situation. Michael speaks to us about the reality of a family living this nightmare and his hope for a happy ending, with Or coming home. He, like all of us, is painfully aware of the fact that we are out of time. We must bring them home. Now. Michael's intelligence, candor and emotional awareness infuse his telling with so much…..power. Please listen.State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. On my latest TalkTV show, I spoke with Orit Meir, mother of Almog, 21, who was kidnapped from the peace festival on October 7th, then seen in a Hamas propaganda video shortly after. Nothing has been heard or seen of him since. Orit says he MUST remain front of mind amid the release of other Hamas hostages. I can't remember conducting a more emotional interview in all my years in broadcast journalism. This is a vital message to transmit through a mother's agony and anxiety as you'll hear. They were joined by Iris Haim, a palliative care nurse whose son Yotam was also kidnapped and remains a hostage to this day.

This wonderful episode features a conversation between MirYam Institute CEO, Benjamin Anthony and the newly appointed chairman of the Jewish Agency, Major General (ret.) Doron Almog. He talks about his storied roles in some of the defining moments of Israel's history: carrying out revenge attacks against the terrorists who murdered Israel's Olympic athletes in the 1972 Munich Games before going onto his role in the Raid On Entebbe in Uganda. He also talks about the crushing loss of his brother, Eran in the Yom Kippur War and the members of his family maimed and murdered during the second Intifada. Then there's the event which most profoundly affected and shifted the focus of his life, that of the birth of his son, Eran, named after Doron's fallen brother.Eran was born with severe disabilities but Doron and his wife were faced with constant disappointment about the quality of care on offer to Eran.So Doron set about establishing Adi Negev Nahalat Eran, a breathtaking facility that treats, cares and rehabiliates Israel's most vulnerable, irrespective of religion, race, color or creed. Please give a close listen to the new head of the Jewish Agency, Doron Almog. The MirYam Institute.
