We dish the VW/Audi dirt with tuning company 034Motorsport's Director of Sales and Marketing, Nick Mercadante. We'll discuss 40 years worth of VAG foibles, from mismatched rotors, calipers that can't handle the heat, 1980s ABS tech, wandering shifters and shattering engine mounts – but don't worry, 034 has you covered! Nick brought out his Audi 90 for us on this episode, and we'll start by discussing its 6-level, buttock-melting heated seats (the relay for which is on its deathbed). Jason's dad had this same car back in Germany in the 90s – featuring cloth seats, crank windows, and no AC. It made for a significantly improved Autobahn experience compared to his previous car, an FJ60-Series Land Cruiser. However, in stock form, the little Audi inline-5 hotrod of the 80s is no match for Jason's modified 170 hp VW Scirocco. The Audi 90's 7A engine just doesn't have the oomph to make up for the drivetrain loss and general heft of the AWD drivetrain. If it had the turbocharged 3B motor from the S2, it may be a different story… Speaking of stories, Jason wrote one for Automobile Magazine some 15 years ago on this exact car that now sits in our background. Did you know it has a carbon fiber driveshaft and an anti anti-lock button? Yes, ANTI anti-lock. We learn about the delightfully colorful California vehicle titles of the last century: both rainbow and pink (which is where the phrase “pink slip” comes from). And Derek is deeply distraught to learn Nick has removed the original California 2-number plate (and to learn just how easy it is to register cars outside of California). We'll cover Nick's various vehicles: his college runabout Audi 90, UrS6 wagon, his BMW M2 (F22), Porsche Cayenne GTS (958.2), Audi SQ5 (w/ nearly 700 hp), his Kei truck Subaru Sambar (w/ nearly 20 hp), his Porsche 944, Audi TT RS, and his first-gen Audi R8 V8 with a NASCAR-grade 034Motorsport exhaust. Speaking of Nick's cars, we'll also cover another 034 Nick's collection – friend of the show, Nick Sgambelluri, who so generously provided (and abused) his monster-turbo Audi 200 sedan, as well as his pristine first-gen Ford Probe Turbo for the Dark Horse ICONS episode – where its axle unalived itself in the middle of a reverse donut (sorry, Nick!). We talk 034Motorsport (which is singular and starts with a “zero”), including their 7 lbs aluminum flywheel for the Audi 90, their dogbone engine mounts, their origins making ECUs for 5-cylinder cars 20 years ago, and their new arm, 034Tradition, which will make classic parts to fill in the voids left behind when parts manufacturers discontinue them (they will even take requests!). Other fun tidbits: Jason's secret new turbo car, the classic RV anal-prefix name game, washing titles in Alabama, Derek the felon, trash Kumhos, Derek advising against too much stroking, the Rover gets a makeover (suspension and tires), and possibly a full Vitesse-style engine build via Redline Rebuilds! Preston Lerner is a freelance writer who has covered racing for the past four decades. For many years, he was a regular contributor to Automobile Magazine and Road & Track. Lerner is also the author or co-author of six books, most recently Shelby American: The Renegades Who Built the Cars, Won the Races, and Lived the Legend. The material used in “Television Turns Its Gaze on Motorsports” is drawn from his upcoming book, The Deadliest Decade, which examines the safety, commercial and technological developments that transformed racing from 1964 to 1973. Lerner's presentation covers the early – and often controversial – efforts of TV to bring automobile racing into American living rooms. In 1961, a segment from the Indianapolis 500 time trials was broadcast as part of ABC's new Wide World of Sports program. During the next few years, racing coverage was expanded to include Formula 1, Le Mans, NASCAR and even USAC dirt-track races. Television dramatically expanded the reach of the sport, which, in turn, attracted major commercial sponsors. By the 1970s, racing had been transformed into the global commercial engine we know today. Yet from the beginning, enthusiasts had a love-hate relationship with ABC. On one hand, TV coverage confirmed that racing was a legitimate sport rather than a tawdry carnival sideshow. On the other, serious fans found the broadcasts puerile and sensationalistic. The camerawork was shaky, the commentary insipid and the focus on accidents infamously morbid. Coverage of the fatal wrecks of Lorenzo Bandini and Roger Williamson inspired widespread disgust that led to improvements in safety. This was an unintended consequence, but it was a product largely of television's unblinking eye. This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/
It's not always easy being nice when you're paid to be honest. This week, the Carmudgeons discuss how to give a bad review without upsetting everyone. === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === John Phillips: "What Not To Write." https://www.caranddriver.com/features/columns/a15127687/john-phillips-a-whole-bunch-of-what-not-to-write-column/ Derek's job is to facilitate sales of cars between collectors, which often requires him to be honest to both buyer and seller. That's especially difficult when a car isn't great. Jason's job is to give unbiased, fact-based reviews of cars. It's easy when things are good, but word choice and observations require extra scrutiny when insults are flying. Perhaps no one did harsh reviews better than Automobile Magazine's Robert Cumberford or Car and Driver's John Phillips. And so Jason recounts Robert's hilarious takedown of the famously opulent Bugatti EB110 reveal from 1991. And he found a Car and Driver column from Mr. Phillips where he shared some of his most hilarious burns. But the best part of the episode? Listening to Derek giggle. Learn more about your ad choices. Special Guest Sam Smith joins the Curmudgeons in this episode! Not the singer, but the best writer in the automotive business. Sam also has his own podcast on the Hagerty Podcast Network called "Driven To Fail." This inspires Jason to bring up all the times Sam "failed" while at Automobile Magazine. Jason and Sam both started their careers at Automobile Magazine at 2006, working with the brilliant, talented, and wonderful Jean Jennings. And Sam had a rocky start — immediately recognized as one of the best writers in the business, but crashed a lot of cars. There were Camry Dents, tire blowouts in a Mk5 GTI, a crunched Lotus Elise, and a Ford GT spun into a culvert. There exist no photos of those accidents, but Jason does have an old video of his Ann Arbor steep-driveway tire test: a Range Rover Sport on summer tires vs a GMC Acadia on all-seasons versus a Chevy Suburban on winters. The results are amazing. Jon, Randall and Eddie discuss the future of The BIG 3 and everything auto! Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Eddie Alterman grew up around, in, and under automobiles. He learned to drive at the age of 10 behind the wheel of his father’s 1962 Porsche 356B. In 1991, Alterman’s passion for cars led him to the door of Automobile Magazine where, between classes at the University of Michigan, he maintained the magazine’s fleet of test cars. He went on to hold various positions there (with a side gig as columnist for Men’s Journal), before leaving the magazine in 2004. In that year, Alterman started MPH. Billed as the anti-car-magazine, MPH combined the irreverence of Spy with the offbeat storytelling of a 1960s-era Car and Driver. Results were mixed. MPH folded two years later, but not before many, many traffic laws had been violated. After MPH, Alterman took back up with Men’s Journal and launched an automotive-lifestyle website, motivemag.com, while contributing to the New York Times. In 2009, Alterman was named editor-in-chief of Hearst Magazines’ Car and Driver, the world’s largest automotive publication. There, he expanded the brand’s digital, commercial, and experiential offerings while reinvigorating the printed magazine. In 2015, he assumed the additional responsibility of editorial oversight for Road & Track. In 2019, Alterman was named Chief Brand Officer for Hearst Autos; in this role, he helps to shape the editorial and business strategies for Hearst’s automotive brands, including Car and Driver, Road & Track, Bring a Trailer, and AutoWeek. He is 48 years old and lives with his wife, two daughters, one dog, and one old Porsche in Franklin, Michigan. Show #569 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 3rd September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Wow a new PATRON signing up as new PARTNER GARETH HAMER! Thank you Gareth that's incredibly generous. SOUTH KOREA ANNOUNCES NEW EV SUBSIDIES FOR 2020 "In the coming year, the South Korean government will provide the equivalent of around 900 million dollars in subsidies for e-mobility. The money will not only be used to subsidise electric and fuel cell cars, but also the associated infrastructure." says Chris Randall for electrive: "The goal is to increase the number of battery electric vehicles on South Korean roads by 71,000 next year and fuel cell vehicles by 10,000. In concrete terms, BEVs will be subsidised by the state government with 8 million won (approx. 6,600 US dollars) in the coming year, each new FCEV will even be subsidised with 22.5 million won (approx. 18,600 US dollars). The significantly stronger support of the FCEV fits into the strategy of the South Korean government that sees hydrogen as a green and promising economic sector. In January this year, the government announced its intention to have 80,000 fuel cell cars on South Korean roads by 2022." https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/02/south-korea-announces-ev-subsidies/ BY 2023, MINI PLANS ADDITIONAL ELECTRIC VEHICLES "It’s hard to argue against the fact that the MINI brand has been extremely successful under BMW’s leadership. Ever since its rebirth in 2000, the MINI brand has grown to become one of the most important premium brands in the world, delivering impressive sales for the BMW Group." according to BMW Blog: "The MINI E was BMW’s first electric car made available to customers, and while it ran only as a pilot in the US and Europe, it paved the way for the BMW i3. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that it took MINI another 8 years to come up with another fully-electric model. Automobile Magazine reports that by 2023, we should expect three additional MINI electric vehicles. The EVs in question are rumored to be a “super-short-wheelbase MiniMINI, a more compact and prettier replacement for the mainstay three-door version, and a MINI crossover. All three are said to be FWD, use a skateboard-style chassis, and offer a choice of 35- or 50-kWh battery packs." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/09/01/report-by-2023-mini-plans-additional-electric-vehicles/ WILL MILLIONS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES DISRUPT GERMANY'S POWER GRID? "Over the coming decade, Germany's electricity grid will need upgrades to enable it to recharge tens of millions of electric cars. Rather than being worried, experts seem to be looking forward to the technical challenge." says dw.com: "On a quiet suburban residential street in Ostfildern, a town a few miles southeast of Stuttgart, 10 households are participating in an experiment that will help shape the future of e-mobility in Germany. The point of the 18-month experiment is to find out what happens when all the households on a typical German street, all of them on the same electricity circuit, drive electric cars. It's a model of the future. How do e-car recharging patterns typically unfold over the course of a week? When do peak loads occur? What kinds of battery storage solutions might be useful for stabilizing grid supply and demand? A 22-kW peak-capacity EV recharging unit was installed in a wall box at each house, and each household was given an e-car for the test's duration, with five VW e-Golf, two BMW i3, and three Renault Zoe e-cars in the mix. In addition, there's a Tesla Model S 75D, which each household will drive for three weeks." https://www.dw.com/en/will-millions-of-electric-vehicles-disrupt-germanys-power-grid/a-50258980 THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE BMW I8 "This, ladies and gentlemen, is the BMW i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition – and it makes us really very sad indeed." says TopGear: "The principle source of our sorrow comes from the fact BMW has confirmed the Ultimate Sophisto Edition will be one of the last i8s ever, with production of the hybrid sports car coming to an end for good in April 2020. This is a real shame. The i8 remains a fantastic car, especially after its mid-life update. With a combined 374bhp from its electric motor and 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine the numbers aren’t huge, but the ride quality and feel are fantastic – plus, it’s just so different to anything else on the market. You’ll also notice a BMW i3S sneaking about in some of the photos above. That too is in the black/copper paint scheme, but for some reason is called the ‘Edition RoadStyle’. There are also no mechanical changes from the standard i3S, so we won’t bore you with any more details. For now, let’s stick to mourning the impending death of the i8. A carbon-tubbed, hybrid sports car that would do 0-62mph in just over four seconds and still offer 20-25 miles of electric range. Yep, we’ll miss it." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/beginning-end-bmw-i8 TESLA MODEL 3 TRACK MODE: DRAINED 250 MILES OF RANGE IN 30 MINUTES "When Tesla first announced Track Mode for the Model 3, it appeared to be a pretty big deal. However, with Tesla, some topics stay hot for a long time, there's lots of talk from owners, we receive plenty of information, and CEO Elon Musk speaks to the topic repeatedly on Twitter. Other Tesla announcements seem to come and go rather quickly." reports InsideEVs: "In a recent video by YouTube channel Tesla Driver, we see extensive footage of a Model 3 Performance racing at Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire, England. The driver engages Track Mode and powers through a whopping 250 miles of range in a mere 30 minutes. While this sounds like a ton of energy use, it's not really that big of a deal. For ease of comparing, let's say the car used its entire battery capacity in 30 minutes (even though the Model 3 Performance has a range over 300 miles). People who spend time racing gas cars can tell you that it's not uncommon to get 4 to 8 mpg. Let's say a gas tank holds some 12 to 20 gallons. While this is far from scientific, in the best-case scenario (8 mpg and a 20-gallon tank), you'll be filling up after 160 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/367599/video-tesla-model-3-track-mode-burns-range/ DEUTSCHE POST SEES INTEREST FROM POTENTIAL PARTNERS FOR EV "Deutsche Post has received expressions of interest from potential partners for StreetScooter, its electric van business, board member Tobias Meyer said on Friday." and reported by Autonews Europe: "The German postal services group has produced 10,000 StreetScooters but is shying away from making large investments in StreetScooter or taking on risks tied to large-scale vehicle production. Deutsche Post has also installed charging over 13,000 posts”. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/deutsche-post-sees-interest-potential-partners-ev QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO FIRST RIDE TEASES PRODUCTION SPECS AND PRICE "Porsche recently granted Automobile Magazine a rare test ride in the Taycan Turbo, the top-tier variant of the company’s first modern all-electric car." says Simon at Teslarati: "Similar to other electric vehicles, the Taycan is capable of regenerative braking as well, though the vehicle’s maximum regeneration is an impressive 250 kW. Higher-tier models also boast features like air suspension and rear-wheel steering. Porsche is yet to fully announce the final specs of the Taycan, though a brand ambassador has confirmed the contents of a document obtained by the Automobile listing the features and specs of each Taycan version. According to the document, the base Taycan will be Rear Wheel Drive only, and it will be equipped with an 80 kWh battery pack. The base Taycan will be powered by a choice of 240-kW (322-hp) and 280-kW (375-hp) motors, and it will command a price in the low ~$90,000 range." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-rival-porsche-taycan-turbo-gts-specs-price/ 2020 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC FIRST OFFICIAL TEST DRIVE IN L.A The YouTube description says: “Hop into the all-new Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC (2019) and let our host Felix Smith take you on a tour through the streets of Los Angeles, California. In this very first real EQC test drive we put the car through its paces. So here is – almost – everything you might want to know about the features and details of the first fully electric SUV by Mercedes-Benz and our idea of the electric future of mobility. The two electric motors of the EQC 400 4MATIC produce 410 PS, which are good for a 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.1 seconds. But there’s so much more to this vehicle than sheer power. That’s why we also talk about the car’s different exterior lines, its technical features like recuperation and the integrated MBUX system with gesture control. Moreover, we thoroughly reviewed the car’s distinctive design, its five different driving modes, the charging options, and we give you the hard facts & numbers like the EQC’s driving range.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1074&v=eDb5wCW8JFs MOIXA COMPLETES £8.6 MILLION FUNDING ROUND LED BY HONDA "Smart battery company Moixa has announced the completion of a multi-million pound funding round in which a collection of global investors led by Honda have backed its vision for the future of home energy storage systems." reports Utility Week: "The £8.6 million will be used to support the company’s plans for international growth and expansion of its current business; managing home batteries, electric vehicles (EVs) and smart charging, and aggregating battery capacity to provide grid services." https://utilityweek.co.uk/moixa-completes-8-6-million-funding-round-led-honda/ POLESTAR 2 WORLD TOUR ARRIVES IN EUROPE STARTING IN SWEDEN "Polestar announced the launch of the Polestar 2 tour in Europe this month to present its first all-electric cars ahead of market introduction in 2020." according to an InsideEVs article today: "The first two locations are: Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22-24 May Stockholm, Sweden, from 30 May to 02 June The roadshow will be conducted in fifteen cities in Europe, between May and October 2019. In June, Polestar will arrive in the Netherlands and Belgium, followed by the UK in July, Germany in August and September, and Norway in October. Exact dates and locations will be listed on the company's website." https://insideevs.com/news/349532/polestar-2-world-tour-europe-sweden/ HYUNDAI AND RIMAC ARE TEAMING UP TO BUILD FAST EVS "Turns out everyone wants a piece of Rimac. Not least Hyundai and Kia, which have today announced they’re investing a not-insignificant €80 million in the Croatian EV hypercar maker and supplier to the likes of Aston Martin and Koenignegg." writes TopGear.com today "The aim? The formation of a “technical partnership” that will see the companies “collaborate on two high-performance electric vehicles by 2020”. Hell. Yes. A press release issued by the companies says “Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Rimac will work closely together to develop an electric version of Hyundai Motor’s N brand midship sports car and a high-performance fuel cell electric vehicle" https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hyundai-and-rimac-are-teaming-build-fast-evs AMSTERDAM LAUNCHES FLEXPOWER SMART CHARGING NETWORK "The City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, launched this month Flexpower - tle argest smart charging network for electric vehicles, which maximizes the use of renewable energy, lowers the need for investments in the electric grid and accelerates charging speed during off-peak periods." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "he project is conducted by Vattenfall and the City of Amsterdam, together with grid owner Liander, the infrastructure competence center Elaad, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The network includes a total of 456 charging stations with 912 charging points (which is a third of all in Amsterdam) operated by Vattenfall, which were upgraded (power increased by 40%) and connected to the Flexpower. Having control over the charging stations, knowledge about current production by local renewable sources (mostly solar) and electricity demand, as well as forecasts, the Flexpower can limit charging power during peak periods (otherwise grid upgrades would be required) or increase the charging power during off-peak periods (especially when production from renewable sources is highest) to accelerate charging and quickly makes use of renewable electricity when it's available." https://insideevs.com/news/349089/amsterdam-flexpower-smart-charging-network/ FIRST DETAILS ON NEW RANGE ROVER "Land Rover will this autumn kick off an extremely significant two-year period of consolidation and expansion, following a turbulent 18 months, that will define the brand for the next decade. " reports Autocar: "A great deal of the activity will relate not just to the launch of four new vehicles but also increased electrification within its line-up. Although the marque’s pure-electric vehicles are still some years away – with sibling brand Jaguar leading the group in this market segment – all new Land Rover models from late 2019 will be offered with the option of mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid drivetrains, allowing it to leave its diesel difficulties behind. " https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/land-rover-plots-comeback-hybrid-led-new-model-blitz TESLA IS A PIONEER THAT DRIVES VOLKSWAGEN’S EV INITIATIVES "Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess was recently asked about his insights on American electric car maker Tesla during an appearance at the Die Welt podcast. The VW boss was candid, stating that Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle market, and it is one that drives Volkswagen in several areas. Despite this, the CEO noted that VW has a thing or two that can be used to catch up to the Silicon Valley-based company." says Teslarati: "VW CEO Herbert Diess noted that he hopes the American carmaker will survive. “I hope that Tesla survives because it is, of course, an incentive and an impulse for us,” he said. He later added that while Tesla has established a lead in the electric vehicle market, this headstart was “certainly not unassailable.” Diess explained that as a “small, focused company,” Tesla has certain advantages, particularly when it comes to its battery and its autonomous driving technologies." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-drives-volkswagen-herbest-diess/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. I know it’s a bit beyond our usual chronology of 90s-era technology, but car tech has come up so much in recent episodes, that I thought it was high time to learn more about the history and future of automotive tech. Electronic vehicles, Tesla, autonomous vehicles, but also, basic recent car tech advances like navigation systems and the like. So, to help me with that, I spoke with Mike Dushane, a 20 year web veteran, like myself, but also a veteran of Automobile Magazine, Car and Driver and, generally, an observer of and participant in the automotive industry over the last couple of decades as digital technology and cars have collided. On this edition of Autoline EXTRA, John and his panel sit down to talk with Dr. Michael Leiters, the Program Manager for the Porsche Cayenne. They discuss the hybrid version of the car and how Porsche’s hybrid system differs in design from the others already out on the road. Dr. Leiters also talks about Porsche’s collaboration with Audi on the hybrid and also what changes they made to the Cayenne in order to fit the hybrid in the vehicle. Joining John in the discussion are Todd Lassa from Motor Trend and Joe DeMatio from Automobile Magazine.
Oxymoron Over the last century, Ferdinand Porsche built his brand on speed, power and performance. So it was almost anathema 7 years ago when, to compete in a market it never knew, Porsche introduced its first Sport Utility Vehicle the Cayenne. Despite the outcry from some critics the car was a hit with consumers. Which is probably why, a year away from the last gas scare with surely more to come, the company is introducing the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid to the North American market. Yes, you read that right -- a hybrid coming from the Germany's Crown Prince of performance -- almost a textbook definition of oxymoron. Joining John McElroy to explain this small shift to the green side is Porsche's Cayenne Program Manager Dr. Michael Leiters. Motor Trend's Todd Lassa and Joe DeMatio from Automobile Magazine fill in our performance panel as we pursue the inside story on Porsche's new Cayenne Hybrid.

Focus The word "focus" conjures a number of different reactions these days. For instance, some immediately hear the hit single of the 1970s while others visualize the action to the lens of a camera, and probably even more think of the compact car produced by Ford. But the interesting thing is when you hear "focus" used around Ford today, it may refer more to the company's concentration that it does the car. As the sole member of the former Big Three who has not taken any government money, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the tsunami of bad news that's been flooding the other two. But as the bankruptcies, resignations and negotiations have grabbed the headlines these past few months, the blue oval has been flying under the media's radar all the while winning awards, improving quality and regaining market share. Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, believes that it's thanks in big part to the company's "focus". On this week's Autoline, Mr. Fields talks about that focus as well as some of the new product it's releasing this year and the future of the company as a whole. Joining John on the panel is Jean Jennings from Automobile Magazine and Bryce Hoffman of The Detroit News.
