(WDRB) - A mother and daughter brutally murdered, and the case is still unsolved. Police say Kathy and Samantha Netherland were killed on April 21. They were attacked - left for dead - and discovered the next day. "The last time I was here, there were police cars and police tape," said Kathy's sister Stacey Hibbard upon returning to the house. She hasn't gone inside since the murders. " pulled into the driveway. My father is who found them, and ya know, he was obviously in a lot of distress and said, ya know, 'They're gone and somebody did something terrible to them.!" "To be as just completely brutal as they were to Samantha, you can't imagine that somebody just said, 'Oh, let's go do that." Hibbard said when asked if she believes the murders were random. Samantha was a sophomore at Bardstown High School when she was killed. Her mom was a special education teacher at Bardstown Elementary. Hibbard says Kathy would have turned 49 on Sunday. As president/distiller, Wally Dant works hard every day to bring his vision for Log Still Distillery to life. And to Wally, it's about more than quality spirits and an unforgettable destination. It's about love of God, family, community and bourbon.  Wally is rebuilding and reimagining the historic distillery property, the very same land in southern Nelson County where his many family members once made spirits. “To be able to put your name as a distiller on a bottle is pretty humbling.” Log Still is Wally's way of honoring his family and giving back to the community he credits for providing his family with values and love. And drawing from years of experience in the healthcare and liquor industries, this business savvy entrepreneur is the right man for the job. Wally dreams big, and he won't stop until he sees those dreams come to fruition. If he's not hard at work shepherding the Log Still brands, you can likely find him making garden fresh salsa, hot sauce, ketchup from the homegrown garden, or cooking up a chef-like meal for friends and family. About Log Still Distillery Log Still Distillery is bringing bourbon back to Gethsemane. Guided by Wally Dant and cousins Lynne and Charles Dant, Log Still is built on old distillery land and reimagined to create a unique bourbon and family destination. In the early morning of May 13, 2013, 33 year-old Bardstown Kentucky police officer Jason Ellis, just weeks away from his seventh anniversary on the job, was heading home after a late night of arrests and subsequent paperwork.  Ellis took Exit 34 off the Bluegrass Parkway, headed for his home in nearby Bloomfield, when he encountered tree limbs blocking the exit ramp.  He turned his car to block the ramp to prevent other drivers from hitting the debris, and suddenly, with an armful of the limbs in his arms, he was shot four times – in the side, neck, arm and head – with what authorities later determined to be 12-gauge shotgun rounds.  He died at the scene.  Ellis was probably the most beloved officer in the Bardstown PD – he left behind a wife and two young sons.  Primarily assigned to the K-9 unit, Ellis' K-9 partner – a German Shepard named Figo – was not with him as he drove home that night.  It was a photograph of Figo putting his paw on his partner's casket at Jason Ellis' funeral that captured the attention of the nation and the world.  But neither Ellis' family or Figo (who died in 2017) – or anyone – has yet to see justice.  For the snipers who clearly staged this assassination have never been caught.  Join Melissa as she goes through all the facts and theories surrounding this mysterious unsolved killing – including rumors and suspicions that Ellis' murder was connected to five other murders in the Bardstown area in the years before and after his death – including an alleged connection to something called the “Cornbread Mafia” – we kid you not.  Listen and find out if you might be able to provide a clue that leads to the answer in this tragic murder.

In the mid 2010s, there were multiple murders and disappearances in the small, rural town of Bardstown, Kentucky. First, Jason Ellis, a decorated 7-year veteran of the Bardstown Police Department was gunned down on the Bluegrass Parkway in the middle of the night...and that was no accident. Next, a mother and daughter were brutally slain in their home for no apparent reason. Third, Crystal Rogers, a 35-year-old Bardstown native, daughter, girlfriend and mother of five, inexplicably disappeared. And, finally, Tommy Ballard, Crystal's own father who had been leading her search party for the better part of a year, was shot and killed one morning when he took his grandson out hunting. That was also no accident. Almost ten years later, the mysteries endure, and the questions are unanswered, with the primary question remaining: Are the heinous crimes of Bardstown, Kentucky somehow related? Thanks to our sponsors for this episode: Help You Find.Mewww.helpyoufind.me/kentucky10https://helpyoufind.me/kentucky10Crazy is as Crazy Does: The Life of a Serial Killerhttps://www.amazon.com/Crazy-As-Does-Serial-Killer-ebook/dp/B07WS1Y958/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=crazy+is+as+crazy+does&qid=1629572501&sr=8-2Show Notes:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2fyzx8jX1l3XB4wVU73KA3

This Thanksgiving week Melissa updates a couple of unsolved missing person cases – one we’ve not yet covered but which has been covered extensively and one we’ve covered extensively and almost no one else has…and as with all unsolved cases, it’s a mixed bag.  The first update has to do with the 2015 disappearance of Crystal Rogers, the then 35 year-old mother of five from Bardstown Kentucky who went missing during the Independence Day holiday.  The last person to see Crystal was her live-in boyfriend, Brooks Houck, who claims that Crystal was playing video games on her phone when he went to bed on the evening of July 2, 2015, only to find Crystal and her car gone the next morning.  Two days later, Crystal’s Chevrolet was found with a flat tire, abandoned off the side of the Bluegrass Parkway – its keys in the ignition and her purse and phone left behind.  The case has been analyzed in detail by several podcasts, most notably the serial Bardstown.  In this episode of JUST THE TIP-STERS, Melissa updates the Rogers case and the recent news stories regarding remains found in July 2020 near where Crystal’s car was found, and the FBI investigation into those remains.  The other update concerns the case that most significantly caused Melissa to start this podcast – the 2017 disappearance of Will Cierzan here in Melissa’s current home town of Santa Clarita, California.  Melissa has covered the case and its progress in Episodes 4, 64, 120 and 149.  Will’s wife Linda Cierzan came home from work on the evening of January 26, 2017 to find the chicken Will had made for dinner out of the oven; his car keys, cell phone and wallet on the kitchen counter – and Will gone.  In a case so frustrating as to be unbelievable, the police investigation took more than three-and-a-half years to arrest the only obvious suspect in the case, Will’s nephew Daniel.   Daniel had admitted to being at his uncle’s house early in the day to watch a golf tournament on TV, but claimed to have left for home by 1:30 pm (a claim backed by Daniel’s dad – Will’s brother Chuck Cierzan.  Father and son were both proven to be lying when a neighbor’s time-stamped security camera caught Daniel leaving Will’s house, then backing his SUV into Will’s driveway right around 5 pm, loading something into the back of the vehicle and then driving off in the opposite direction from his home.  Both Daniel and Chuck have been under suspicion ever since, but not until August of 2020 did police believe they had enough evidence – and then against only one of the two – Daniel.  Chuck is still a free man.  On this episode’s update of the Will Cierzan case, Melissa describes her attendance at a recent preliminary hearing in Daniel Cierzan’s murder trial, her introduction to the kick-butt Assistant District Attorney who will be prosecuting the case, and the new hope that is floating in the air that we may be closer to a conclusion to this matter and some relief to Linda Cierzan and the rest of Will’s family, who only want to know where he is so he can come home.

No one can even say for sure if the murders are all connected...(I can...totally sure.)- Michael   Patreon!     Sources: https://www.whas11.com/article/news/crime/unsolved/car-caught-on-surveillance-at-netherland-home/417-7b7bfab9-850a-4376-907e-7c881eb619ec#:~:text=Kathy%20and%20Samantha%20Netherland%20were,Their%20killer%20was%20never%20found.&text=BARDSTOWN%2C%20Ky.,murdered%20in%20their%20own%20home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=088kr-EvaFM local news series [Unsolved] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzKlfEcQ4iE&list=PL7yRqtDfF-XMevfOhfvG4Tr5AmACcMeAy  Oxygen channel series https://police-museum.org/line-of-duty/21th-century/police-officer-jason-s-ellis-bardstown-ky-police-department/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0taWNRNx34&list=PLRVbJOthsXMOI6gcDTOlU737a35I2F-K7 https://www.yourtango.com/2019323801/who-are-kathy-and-samantha-netherland-new-details-unresolved-murder-mother-and-daughter https://www.oxygen.com/the-disappearance-of-crystal-rogers/crime-time/netherland-murders-gang-initiation-inmate https://www.crimeonline.com/2019/09/02/bardstown-mystery-four-dead-one-missing-in-the-most-beautiful-small-town-in-america/  https://www.wave3.com/2019/08/19/bardstown-fd-open-arson-investigation-after-home-built-by-brooks-houck-burns-down/

This week, Johnny and I are late, clearly. But we covered the strange (and at the time of our research, unsolved) murders in Bardstown Kentucky. A police officer, a mother and her 16-year-old daughter were killed, along with the strange disappearance of Crystal Rogers along with some other strange murders. There is a conspiracy angle to this story as well, but due to us recording this today, we didn't have a whole lot of time to go into it. Either way, enjoy the show! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chillingtruth/support

As a book lover, there are two things I've often fantasized about doing. Being a bookseller and writing my own novel would be at the tippy top of the list. Our guest today, Kim Colette Ballard, has hit the booknerd jackpot. She is a book buyer for Riot Book Cellar, a new independent bookstore and wine bar in the small town of Bardstown Kentucky, a place known for its bourbon distilleries and being at the heart of the Bourbon Trail. She helped the manager and owner develop the book bar concept in this quaint tourist town about 45 minutes outside of Louisville KY. She is also the author of a young adult novel, Running on Empty, published in 2014 and winner of several regional awards for young adult fiction. And while she has several other novels on the backburner she is very honest about the extreme highs and sometimes extreme lows you can experience during the publishing process. Kim talks to us about the great features Riot Book Cellar has added to make coming into their bookstore feel like hanging out with “Friends”, the experience that sparked her journey to writing her first book, and why she stopped reading for awhile but vows to never let that happen again. You can find us on FB, instagram (@perksofbeingabookloverpod) and on our blog site at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com Perks airs on Forward Radio 106.5 FM and forwardradio.org every Wednesday at 6 pm, Thursdays at 6 am and 12 pm. Just 16 months later, while searching for answers, Crystal's father is murdered in cold blood.
