This week we focus on the emerging musicians that will ensure that the historic South African jazz scene will have a bright future, and on a number of recent releases showcasing the many facets of a living master of the piano, Kenny Barron, featured as an accompanist for a vocalist, as a solo artist on a rare recording date as a leader, as a composer that inspires other contemporary musicians, and as a side-man in a very bop-oriented concert which has been recently unearthed. The playlist also features Vusi Mahlasela; Thandi Ntuli; Bokani Dyer [pictured]; Linda Sikhakhane; Mthunzi Mvubu; BCUC; Claudia Acuña; Billy Childs; Sonny Stitt.

The music of BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) resonates strongly with a sense of spirituality and deals with the past, the present and the future of the people of South Africa. Striving to rectify western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC, who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n' roll attitude. And there are even fewer who can claim to have played Glastonbury, Roskilde and Afropunk and recorded with living legends Saul Williams and Femi Kuti. Outro Song: “Sikhulekile” - BCUC feat. Femi Kuti Apple Music and Youtube Try and keep up with BCUC at: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. None of this would have been possible without our partners STFD Studios and Mixroom Studios. In the last hour, the BC Utilities Commission released a follow-up report on its gasoline price inquiry. It was given an extension to gather feedback and explanations on that "unexplained" 13-cent-a-litre mark-up of Metro Vancouver gas prices. So what did they find out? Guest: David Morton Chair of the BC Utilities Commission
For Episode 011 of Flux Capacitor, the podcast about the future of electricity, Francis is joined by Tim Egan of the Canadian Gas Association for a conversation with the CEO and Chair of the British Columbia Utilities Commission, David Morton. This is part of our collaboration with CAMPUT, the association of Canada’s energy and utility regulators, and was recorded at the Global Grid Forum, in Vancouver BC in September 2019, where both Francis and David were speakers. From the CEA team, Michael Powell stops by to talk about recent news, and Ana Santarem provides an overview of the cross-Canada electrification debate series CEA is presenting.
An inquiry into gasoline prices by the BC Utilities Commission has found a significant, unexplained difference of 13-cents per litre in southern B-C. Commission Chair David Morton says the price in Metro Vancouver is higher than would be expected under more competitive conditions, and the higher price differentials cannot be explained by economic theory or justified by known factors in the market. But Morton says they found no evidence to suggest collusion among retail operators or evidence of cartel behaviour. Guest: Bruce Ralston BC Minister of Jobs, Trade, and Technology
That's David M. Morton, Chair and CEO of the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC). Their inquiry into B.C. gas prices has found that there is a “significant unexplained difference” of about 13 cents per litre in the price of gas in southern B.C. compared to the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Guest: Keith Baldrey Global BC Legislative Bureau Chief Guest: Dan McTeague Long-time gas industry analyst
It's been a busy week in BC politics, and we're moments away from learning some of the key findings from that inquiry into BC's high gas prices.
Johannesburg-based poet Thabiso Mohare explores the music of Soweto from the 1970s onwards, through the unrest that led to democracy in 1994, and takes a look at the music scene today. Featuring interviews with Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, Mandla Mlangeni, BCUC and The Soil.
Of all the scandals, the systemic neglect, the misspent money, the cronyism, the deaths within the public welfare system and so much more, by far the most destructive and longest lasting disaster for BC would be the completion of Site C, the third of four dams on the Peace River first proposed in the 1950's. Site A, the W.A.C. Bennett dam, opened in 1967 under fire for mostly the exact same complaints now plaguing Site C. In 1980, Site B, the Peace Canyon dam opened while payouts from the destruction caused 13 years earlier from Site A were being paid. Site C was rejected in 1982 and 1989 after BC Utilities Commission hearings determined it was not needed. But the BC Liberals changed all that, in a steady orchestrated campaign of false need, false gains and false predictions. After the BC Rail giveaway and the BC Ferries debacle, why should the most powerful asset BC Hydro be left without being used for gain at the expense of future generations? Nowhere is the revolving door between the BC Liberal party and a Crown corporation turning faster than that picture. From deciding to skip BCUC approval for the first major project ever, to using BC Hydro as a cash cow, to managing the public relations from Victoria, to allowing massive environmental penalties to go unpunished, to ending conservation programs, Site C is indeed a legacy project selected by the Clark regime. A $10 billion cost for something with no market, no profitability, no open process and no foreseeable point other than "we did it" while the citizens of BC pay in perpetuity for something they never needed. Farmland being expropriated, wildlife being displaced, First Nations being ignored and BC Hydro being bankrupted, all for a political goal of uselessness.
