It's the end of Spooktober... nobody trusts anybody now and we're all very tired, as we chill out with the original prince of podcasting RJ MacReady and John Carpenter's frozen freakfest takes its rightful place in the pod pantheon. It's 1982's The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David and Donald Moffat. An absolute masterclass in the art of practical make-up and on-camera special effects, it's a movie that still looks outstanding to this day, now 42 years after it hit the screen. Critics hated the film upon its release, accusing Carpenter of only being interested in pushing the limits of technical achievement, and slacking on character and story. While I'd take issue with the latter critique, the former is exactly what has made the movie an enduring favourite. As for its story, this is a scenario so rife with paranoia that it has since gone on to become a successful board game. Sadly, The Thing is not available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but you can nab it on Blu-ray for $5 most places and it's well worth owning on physical media. Other works discussed in this episode include the Venom franchise, Invaders From Mars, Poltergeist, Transformers, Lover, Stalker, Killer, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Paranormal Activity 2, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Poltergeist III, Truth or Dare (2017), Death Becomes Her, Gladiator II, The X-Files, Lost, Severance, Clear and Present Danger, and Escape From New York. We'll be back next week to kick off No-Theme-ber, a lawless month where anything goes, as Roxy Fever's Jackson McDonald returns to the show with a redemption pick from his own collection, and to promote the new King Bob album Rookie available now wherever you get your music. He's making us circle back to Hitchcock with a classic mistaken identity thriller, 1959's North by Northwest, with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

It's a classic 1970s snobs-versus-slobs story of rooting for the losers, the bums, the misfits. Starring Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neill, Vic Morrow, Jackie Earl Haley, and Joyce Van Patten. Written by Bill Lancaster. Directed by Michael Ritchie.

When John Carpenter was first contacted about potentially directing a remake of the 1951 classic “The Thing from Another World,” he was reluctant to sign onto the project. The studio had already hired and fired “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper and Carpenter didn't really see a path to a creative remake from a film he admired so much. But it was his first chance to move from independent cinema to do a studio film so Carpenter eventually decided to take on the project while putting his own original spin on the concept where he wouldn't try to hide the creature but rather explore the various incarnations of an alien who could assume the identity of any host it invaded. Rob Bottin was brought on board to handle the practical effects for the film, which ended up eating a huge part of the budget but it also helped create many of the most iconic moments in the movie. Set in a remote science station in Antarctica, a group of American scientists soon discover that they are not alone after an alien presence that can duplicate any one of them begins to systematically dismantle them one by one while proving that man really is the warmest place to hide…To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic horror films in history, Rewind of the Living Dead will grab the flamethrowers and get ready to do a blood test as we look back on John Carpenter's “The Thing”…

The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any of them could be the Thing. The film stars Kurt Russell as the team's helicopter pilot, R.J. MacReady, and features A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles. Big thank you to one of the best writers, producers, and directors in the industry Alan B. McElroy for coming on my show for an interview! Alan discussed how he started to write at an early age, learning how to write a screenplay by studying Bill Lancaster's screenplay of John Carpenter's The Thing, and being inspired to write horror movies when he saw Jaws in the movie theaters. He discussed writing the script for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers in just 11 days, talking to Donald Pleasance on set, and his idea for Jamie Lloyd becoming the shape not carrying over in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. He got into what he would do with Halloween III: Season of the Witch if he was approached with the story for a prequel or sequel and possibly create a Haddonfield series. Alan also talked about writing the cult classic 2003 film Wrong Turn, the original idea that he had for it, and putting a spin on his own work for his 2021 version of Wrong Turn. He mentioned that he has an idea for a trilogy for the new Wrong Turn and is already pitching it. He also got into his experience of writing for Star Trek: Discovery and Vampire Diaries. It was recently announced that Alan is writing a new thriller called Help involving Tyler Perry and Jason Blum. Stay tuned! Follow me on Instagram and Twitter: @thereelmax. It is midnight in Cozy Corner and around the world. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, bundle up and get ready to travel down to Outpost 31.  March is John Carpenter month on the Late Night Fright. The next film up is his 1982 masterpiece THE THING starring Kurt Russell. Still waters run deep but paranoia runs deeper.  THE THING was critically reviled upon its initial release but became a cult film upon its home video release and has undergone a critical reevaluation since then. The film is based upon the novella WHO GOES THERE by John Campbell, Jr., editor of ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION. Howard Hawks produced a successful 1951 version entitled THE THING FROM OUTER SPACE directed by Christian Nyby, a film Carpenter admires very much. Truer to the source material, THE THING, adapted by Bill Lancaster, chronicles what happens when Snake Plissken plays a game of chess with a shape shifting alien.  Featuring a score by Ennio Morricone and wonderful supporting performances, THE THING may just be Carpenter's masterpiece.  The first episode of this two parter deals with the history of the story, Carpenter's signature style, thematic elements and the score.  Join us...if you dare!!!

Tonight's guest, Bill Lancaster, had an experience while hunting in the Cherokee National Forest (close to the Appalachian Trail) in Tennessee that would have caused most people to swear off ever going back into the woods again. Ironically, Bill was hunting in the same area where Hondo, my guest from Episode 130 of Dogman Encounters, had a run-in with a Dogman.  Bill's also going to talk about a Sasquatch documentary he and his wife are going to produce, titled "Cultured Bigfoot." In addition to today's regular episode, here's a special treat for Halloween! It's a dramatic audio reenactment of The Lost Ice Scene that was in Bill Lancaster's script but was deemed too expensive to film. While I did the sound design, the rest could not have happened without the extreme generosity of the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company!

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Our 200th episode of the podcast. How crazy is that? So what we do on "milestone" episodes, as co-host Eric has stated many times, we always do one of the classic films of genre and speculative fiction. This time we do one of our favorites and that's John Carpenter's The Thing. The film was panned when it was released. The box office was bad. And it had competition from other science fiction films including E.T. and Blade Runner (which was actually released the same day). But when a great film flounders on release, re-evaluation occurs and time has shown that the very best always "floats" to the top. When a sled dog appears at the door of an American Antarctic research facility, a huge mystery is presented to the crew. Why was a Norwegian helicopter chasing it? And why did they try to shoot it dead? When two of the team members head to the Norwegian research facility, they discover it destroyed and everybody dead or missing. Soon the head researcher locks himself away in his room, and he begins to fear that what happened to the Norwegians may about to take root at the American facility. Released in 1982, and based off the novella Who Goes There by John W. Campbell Jr., the film is a remake of arguably the best sci-fi film of the 1950's, The Thing From Another World. With fabulous special effects, a perfectly cast of actors, and a screenplay written by Bill Lancaster that brings out the paranoia and loneliness of the desolate wasteland of Antarctica, The Thing is now considered one of the top ten best horror films of all time. Dark Discussions gives their opinions. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Tysto film commentaries

Kurt Russell and a bunch of "scientists" take on Rob Bottin and Stan Winston in a remake/readaptation of the 1950s monster flick, The Thing From Outer Space. The Doctor, of Speakeasy Commentaries, joins me for a third time—this time in glorious stereophonic sound. We both love the film and heap praise all over it (even on the dog) and yet fail to credit the original author, John W Campbell, Jr. ("Who Goes There") or even the screen adapter, Bill Lancaster. We address such delicate questions as "who gets assimilated when?" "why keep rotting corpses indoors?" and "what's with Doc Copper's nose ring?" as well as marvel at the number of Vietnam-haunted alcoholic pot-smokers that were sent to live in the Antarctic for months at a time with firearms, dynamite, and flame-throwers.
