It's the end of Spooktober... nobody trusts anybody now and we're all very tired, as we chill out with the original prince of podcasting RJ MacReady and John Carpenter's frozen freakfest takes its rightful place in the pod pantheon. It's 1982's The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David and Donald Moffat. An absolute masterclass in the art of practical make-up and on-camera special effects, it's a movie that still looks outstanding to this day, now 42 years after it hit the screen. Critics hated the film upon its release, accusing Carpenter of only being interested in pushing the limits of technical achievement, and slacking on character and story. While I'd take issue with the latter critique, the former is exactly what has made the movie an enduring favourite. As for its story, this is a scenario so rife with paranoia that it has since gone on to become a successful board game. Sadly, The Thing is not available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but you can nab it on Blu-ray for $5 most places and it's well worth owning on physical media. Other works discussed in this episode include the Venom franchise, Invaders From Mars, Poltergeist, Transformers, Lover, Stalker, Killer, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Paranormal Activity 2, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Poltergeist III, Truth or Dare (2017), Death Becomes Her, Gladiator II, The X-Files, Lost, Severance, Clear and Present Danger, and Escape From New York. We'll be back next week to kick off No-Theme-ber, a lawless month where anything goes, as Roxy Fever's Jackson McDonald returns to the show with a redemption pick from his own collection, and to promote the new King Bob album Rookie available now wherever you get your music. He's making us circle back to Hitchcock with a classic mistaken identity thriller, 1959's North by Northwest, with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week we are experiencing some technical difficulties because Apple absolutely wrecked my audio set-up with an unnecessary OS update that doesn't seem to have made anything better. That's beside the point, but I did want to apologize off the hop. Anyway. The Hunt For The American James Bond continues both in our hearts and on the show, as we dip our toes into the chilly waters of Lake Jack Ryan one last time with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, Miguel Sandoval, Benjamin Bratt, Anne Archer, Thora Birch and James Earl Jones. Patriot Games set the bar pretty low, and this movie comfortably clears it. But it doesn't hit the heights of Hunt For Red October either, leaving us with a somewhat satisfying if not overly long political thriller about drug cartels and American intelligence. There's room to have fun there if you're willing to acknowledge how skeezy the CIA actually is, but perhaps we weren't there yet in '94. Other works discussed in this episode include Poor Things, The Holdovers, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and 24. Plus, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets renamed for streaming. This is the third ADHD-DVD film with a Steven Zaillian writing credit. The previous were Mission: Impossible and Gangs of New York. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, good luck! It is not available for streaming in Canada, but is rentable on YouTube. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a third consecutive Phillip Noyce movie, the admittedly very goofy Val Kilmer vehile The Saint (1997) that is also sadly not available for streaming in Canada. We'll be joined by gifted improviser (and J Mo's childhood friend) Mica Prazak to discuss whether it deserves to be added to the canon, or loaded into a cannon. Until then, see you at the movies!!

This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses: In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison. The Thing catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility. Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan needs Wang's green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

Thanks for listening! “The Thing” (1982) stars Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley, Donald Moffat, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Thomas G. Waites, David Clennon, T.K. Carter, Richard Masur, Joel Polis, and Peter Maloney; directed by John Carpenter.
We've hinted at it all season long, but in our Season 5 finale, we're going out strong with a film that is absolutely perfect; it's John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982. A tale of paranoia, toxic masculinity, and great facial hair that just feels timeless. Is it Carpenter's best movie? Was Childs assimilated? What happened to Nauls? How many times can we say the words "the Thing" in one episode? We have answers to all of these questions and more in this jam packed episode. Plus, our pitch for a Saturday morning cartoon based on The Thing, remaking this film with the cast of Mean Girls, the wild life of Wilford Brimley, and more are all points of discussion in our final send off of the year before our long hibernation in the arctic.Happy holidays! See you in Season 6.The Thing (1982) stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, David Clennon, and Keith David. There have been three adaptations of John Campbell's short story: THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951), THE THING (1982), and THE THING (2011). Just like their monster, these movies shapeshift with their era: Is the alien a metaphor for the atom bomb, or Communism? Masculinity or feminism? Across these decades, each movie showcases wildly different special and visual effects, while tackling the themes of their era. We discuss how the classic 50s sci-fi, directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks, pits scientists against the military, while John Carpenter's remake, starring Kurt Russell, Keith David, and Donald Moffat, replaces propaganda with a brooding atmosphere. We then explore womanhood and studio interference in the 2011 prequel, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Egerton. This week, we’re catching up to society by finally watching John Carpenter’s THE THING. Directed by John Carpenter, THE THING stars Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, David Clennon, T.K. Carter, Charles Hallahan, Richard A Dysart, Thomas G. Waites, Joel Polis, Peter Maloney, and two guys who play Norwegians! (Yeah. That’s right. I typed all of that just to stop at the last two guys who were in the movie.) Fuel up your flamethrowers! It’s time to commit MASS MOVIECIDE!
Logan 5 (Michael York) and Jessica 6 (Jenny Agutter) live in the City of Domes where life seems idyllic with just one little catch: everyone dies at 30. We speak to Logan's Run authors William F. Nolan George Clayton Johnson about their landmark book. We discuss the film with Eric Cohen of The Cinefiles.
The series depicted Logan and Jessica -- pursued by Francis (Randolph Powell) -- traveling in a futuristic hovercraft-like vehicle on a cross-country trek to Sanctuary in a post-apocalyptic America. The domed city was seen only in the pilot and two other episodes, using recycled footage from the film. In a change from the book and film, the television series had the city run by a cabal of elderly citizens; Francis has been promised a life beyond thirty as a city elder if he can bring back the fugitives. Logan and Jessica were joined on their journey by an android named REM, played by Donald Moffat.
