In this insightful conversation, I sit down with Captain George Dom, a retired U.S. Navy officer, to explore the essence of high trust leadership and its pivotal role in building high-performance teams. Captain Dom shares his extensive experience from his distinguished military career, including leading the renowned Blue Angels and teaching at Top Gun. Together, they delve into the principles of trust and how these can be effectively applied both in the military and corporate environments. What You'll Learn: The Foundation of Trust in Leadership: Captain Dom offers a compelling look into his philosophy of trust, outlining five levels of trust that are vital for leadership and team cohesion. He emphasises the need for leaders to earn unconditional trust through consistent behaviour and openness. The Power of Effective Communication: Discover how clear, concise, and consistent communication helps in building and maintaining trust within teams. Dom and I highlight the importance of mutual understanding, where leaders must ensure they are understood and also convey that they understand their team members. The Importance of Debriefing: Paul Taylor and Captain Dom discuss the sacred practice of debriefing in aviation and how this routine ensures continuous improvement. This practice, they argue, is crucial not just for safety in aviation but for success in any high-stakes environment. Transitioning from Military to Civilian Life: Learn about the challenges and opportunities involved in transitioning from a structured military environment to the civilian world, and how the principles of trust and leadership remain relevant across these domains. Building High-Performance Teams: Through examples from his military career, Captain Dom illustrates how trust is not just a nice-to-have but a strategic imperative for any high-performing team. Whether flying jets or managing corporate teams, the principles remain the same. Key Takeaways: Trust is Earned: It's a continuous commitment and starts with leaders demonstrating integrity and reliability. Character and Commitment: These are at the core of trust. Leaders must show they are committed to their teams, especially when challenges arise. Communication is Key: Effective leaders ensure that they communicate clearly with their teams, and also actively seek feedback and understanding. Shared Sacrifice Bonds Teams: Experiencing challenges together can strengthen team bonds and trust. High Trust Leads to High Performance: Trust allows teams to operate more efficiently and effectively, leading to better outcomes. Resources: For those looking to delve deeper into the concept of high trust leadership or to apply these strategies in their own teams, consider exploring Captain George Dom’s book "High Trust Leadership: Building High-Performance Teams." Damo and Tisha are joined by AS1 Justin Kramer. They open the episode with a conversation about the ups and downs of social media. Damo breaks down his extroverted introversion. Is perception really reality, or is that just an overused adage? An AS is a pretty rare rate in the Navy, and Damo wonders if it was Justin's first choice. What does an AS do? AS1 did a tour with the Blue Angels and detailed his experience. What is the margin for error for a Blue Angel? AS1 details his “hardest day” as a Blue Angel. How does an AS with the Blue Angels compete for evaluations? After the Blue Angels, Justin did an IA tour in Bahrain; he broke down the mission. Justin was in Bahrain during the “Day of Rage,” which doubles as one of his worst experiences in the Navy. AS1 details his initial reporting and check-in experiences on the USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) in 2019. He also gives us a new term: T.E.D.S - Typical Enlisted Dudes. AS1 just so happened to be in the off-going duty section the morning of the fire on the BHR. He played a role in the firefighting efforts as a Team Leader and details his first-hand experiences while attacking the casualty. He describes the physical, mental, and emotional impact that this experience had on him. How was the command climate affected by the fire? How did the command deal with the aftermath of how it played out in the media? AS1 talked about wanting to stay on the ship until she decommissioned. AS1 details living with PTSD, the support of his family, and the therapy he's been receiving. AS1 Kramer gives his “Do Better.” Justin asks Damo and Tish a couple of questions. Damo introduces a game to AS1. Whether you're in the Blue Angels, on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier or an elite athlete, being on a high performing team isn't about you. Your success depends on working together, sacrificing, covering for each other and collaborating.  In order to do this right, everyone on the team has to hold up their end of the bargain. The leader has to be willing to hold up a mirror to their own performance and be the basis of all the values they want the team to have.  The team member has to carry their weight. Collectively, the organizational mission has to precede the personal mission.  The moment you have a group of people with their own agendas is the moment performance and ultimately, results get compromised. How do we uphold the 5 core tenants of high performance teams? How do high performance teams have hard conversations?  In this episode, aviation executive, pilot, speaker, former Commanding Officer of the Blue Angels and author of High Trust Leadership, George Dom returns to share how great teams operate, learn from mistakes and work towards their goals.  When you're a team, your success depends on you working together, sacrificing, covering for each other and collaborating. -George Dom   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  5 questions to ask yourself everyday There are interconnected things every single high performance team needs to have. How do we make them part of our daily routines?  Every organization needs a post-flight debrief One of the biggest gaps is corporate America is the inability for leaders to give and get candid feedback. Why is it so important for teams not to shy away from holding a mirror up to their own performance?  High performance team vs. high performance person You either have a team or a group of individuals with their own agendas. It's Part 2 with Amy Yasbeck and we continue intimate and thought-provoking conversation, delving even deeper into topics that touch on family, love, loss, and spiritual growth. We begin with Pol' reminiscing about his grandmother's battle with dementia, sharing poignant memories of her wisdom and the deep emotional connection they shared and their spiritual connections. Amy draws parallels to her own Lebanese heritage, where family and spirituality played significant roles and shares touching anecdotes about her father trying to teach her Lebanese. We discuss more serious territory exploring health concerns that have touched our families. Amy, reflecting on her own experience with the sudden loss of her husband, John Ritter, shares invaluable advice on how to approach doctors and advocate for oneself when it comes to genetic heart conditions and the importance of being proactive with family medical history. A heartfelt conversation about relationships and love ensues and Pol talks about his philosophy on giving his best to his partner every day, and Patrik reflects on how people often give up on relationships too early. Amy offers her wisdom on the delicate balance between love and self-preservation, cautioning against staying in toxic relationships for fear of being alone. She shares how her love for John was unique and magical, confessing that she doesn't believe she'll ever find a love like that again. Can you guess what Amy's least favorite song is? It turns spiritual as we discuss the concept of heaven and the afterlife. Amy expresses her belief that while many think of heaven as a far-off reward, she prefers to focus on creating heaven on earth through meaningful connections with others. She reveals that she feels John's presence guiding her through life and that she has learned to embrace those signs rather than ignore them. We reveal our bucket lists. What do you think they are, and do they match up with yours? Amy lightens the mood further by sharing a hilarious story about her experience flying with the Blue Angels during her time on Wings, and her fantasy of racing through the empty streets of Los Angeles. It gets fun with our “haute topics” and the new Matlock reboot is center stage What connections does Amy have to the reboot and the original?  Our critiques on celebrity fashion in ‘Runway Rundown' offers candid and hilarious takes on the latest red carpet looks and Amy's own recent outfit gets dissected. Game-Time is “Amy Yasbeck – WINGSed it” no pun intended with a fun true-or-false game, where she answers questions about her career, including whether she guest-starred on Friends, voiced an animated character, and wrote a line in Pretty Woman.  As we wind down, Amy talks about her memoir, ‘With Love and Laughter', and how it helped raise awareness for aortic dissection, the condition that took John Ritter's life. Pol' continues the Armenian Coffee Grounds reading and encourages her to fully embrace her potential and follow her passions, and concludes on a heartfelt note with Amy sharing her belief in the power of alleviating suffering and living a life filled with purpose, love, and laughter. Navigating Labor Strikes, Middle East Tensions, VP Debates, and Global Economies: Key Insights from This Week's Capitalist Investor EpisodeIn the latest episode of the Capitalist Investor, hosts Diamond Hands D, Tony the Tiger, and Cool Hand Luke delve into five pivotal topics that have significant economic, political, and social implications. Here's a breakdown of the episode's key discussions:1. The Longshoremen Strike and Its Economic ImpactThe episode kicks off with a deep dive into the longshoremen strike, where workers are demanding a staggering 77% pay raise over five years. Luke argues that this could be a case of unions being overly greedy, especially given the direct correlation between the rise in strikes and inflationary pressures over the past few years. The hosts also discuss how resistance to automation could backfire, as robots don't strike or demand pay raises. Tony highlights the logistical nightmare, noting that for every day on strike, it takes three to five days to catch up on the backlog. The consensus? The strike is setting up workers for obsolescence in the face of inevitable automation.2. Middle East Tensions and Economic RipplesThe conversation swiftly moves to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran. Luke provides a hot take on the economic ramifications, explaining that if Iran is attacked, it could disrupt oil exports to China, potentially leading to a larger-scale conflict involving Russia. Such a scenario would wreak havoc on commodity prices, causing reinflation in the U.S. and shattering the Federal Reserve's narrative of cooling inflation. Tony throws in a conspiracy theory, questioning the timing and nature of the missile attacks, suggesting that something feels staged.3. Vice Presidential Debate: A Breath of Fresh AirThe recent Vice Presidential debate also makes headlines in this episode. Diamond Hands D praises the debate for being watchable and surprisingly cordial. Tony lauds JD Vance for his well-spoken and knowledgeable demeanor, even hinting that he might vote for him in the future. Luke speculates that JD could run for president in 2028, sharing his excitement about a potential JD Vance and Vivek Ramaswamy partnership. Despite the positive reception, the hosts agree that Vice Presidential debates don't usually sway voters significantly, as people vote for the president, not the VP.### 4. China's Stimulus Package: Bazooka or Firecracker? When it comes to global economics, China's recent $115 billion stimulus package, dubbed the "bazooka," is dissected. Tony finds the amount underwhelming compared to the U.S.'s multi-trillion-dollar stimulus efforts. Luke explains that while the amount may seem minuscule, the perception is that China is committed to bailing out its economy, which has been facing real estate issues and supply-demand imbalances. The discussion ends with a cautionary note that government bailouts often make things worse in the long run.5. Childhood Dreams: From Fighter Pilots to Watch ReviewersIn a lighter segment, the hosts reveal their childhood career aspirations. Luke initially wanted to be a banker, later dreaming of becoming a quantum physicist or biomedical engineer. Tony aspired to be a fighter jet pilot, sharing an inspiring story of meeting a real-life Blue Angels pilot at a wedding. Diamond Hands D kept it simple, initially wanting to be a professional basketball or baseball player. Today, he dreams of starting a YouTube channel to review luxury watches.Final ThoughtsThis week's Capitalist Investor episode is a rollercoaster of economic insights, global political analysis, and personal anecdotes. Whether it's the implications of labor strikes, the destabilizing effects of Middle Eastern conflicts, the nuances of political debates, or the financial strategies of global superpowers, the hosts cover it all with their signature
