On this episode of What Happened When, Tony and Conrad a look at an angle that defined Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in the 1970's and was one of the biggest, if not the biggest part of Tony's fandom growing up in Virginia. Blackjack Mulligan vs Ric Flair featured two of the biggest heels in Jim Crockett Promotions finally splitting into a blood feud. The suggestion comes from DJ Turn Up of Stone Mountain, Georgia, who wrote: "...I love to hear how giddy Tony gets when he talks about his fandom and he talks about how this is one of his favorite rivalries. I would like to know more info on it..." The link to watch along is here from YouTube:https://youtu.be/mFe7D0kFrTg?si=aFUgsI87agVjdIxa Plus, We dive into Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling maybe for the last time in a while. The "Network" is officially gone, and the "Cock" has taken over, so we are not sure when we will be able to continue our look back at this great JCP syndicated show. But on this week's edition a change is in the air. Even though the open and the logo say "Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling", Bob Caudle intros the show as "NWA Pro Wrestling." Plus we are going to see the breakup between Jimmy Valiant and Pez Whatley; see Wahoo McDaniel in action (as well as a pretty entertaining confrontation between the Chief and Precious); hear from Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. We hope you enjoy this episode and we hope to get back to this show soon. As Bob Caudle would say: "...so long, for now..." Kris & David are joined this week by Al Getz (@AlGetzWrestling) to discuss the week-plus that was October 12-19, 1993. We also discuss Al's new book, Charting the Territories: The 1971-1973 LeRoy McGuirk Oklahoma/Louisiana Wrestling Almanac. We start the show by talking about the WWF and Randy Savage going scorched earth on Hulk Hogan on Jim Ross's Radio WWF show, including who was in the right, the timing of the rant, and whether Vince McMahon pushed Savage to do it. We also talk about a interesting episode of Raw featuring The Savage-Crush Summit and thus Crush's heel turn, which made no sense whatsoever when we analyzed it. We also talk about Shawn Michaels & Jim Ross making some very interesting comments regarding their WWF careers on the same episode of Radio WWF and a lot more in a packed WWF section. Then we go International, talking about AJPW & NJPW running some very interesting shows including Jushin Thunder Liger getting a pin on Masahiro Chono at Korakuen Hall in a tag league match, FMW & W*ING doing well, Pancrase getting off the ground, Eddie Guerrero continuing his rudo turn in AAA, CMLL & UWA business looking bleak, and a lot more.Next we come back to the United States, talking about the early days of Paul Heyman-booked ECW and their relationship with the WWN, Bob Caudle meeting Darryl Van Horn for the first time in SMW, The Moondogs turning heel and Brian Christopher turning babyface in USWA, Big D results of course, and other wild indie notes. Then we close with WCW in a small but fun little section as we look at some CRYSTAL CHANDELIER shows, and their horrible house show business including killing The Omni, among other notables.Al is, as always, a great guest; everyone please buy his book, because it's fantastic!!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 WWF1:33:55 Eurasia: AJPW, NJPW, FMW, Michinoku Pro, W*ING, Pancrase, AJW, & CWA2:15:47 Classic Commercial Break2:21:03 Halftime2:43:56 Mexico: AAA, CMLL, & UWA3:01:41 Other USA: ESPN 2, UWF, IWCCW, WWN, ECW, ICWA, Tri-Star, Blackstar, SMW, USWA, CWI, Mid-South, GWF, Big D, CWUSA, & Thunder in Paradise4:37:28 WCW4:58:09 Patreon Preview: Weird hold-ups in the WWF's negotiations to buy WCW thanks to both themselves and ViacomTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. New videos up weekly!DISCRETION IS ADVISED! TOM'S MOST OBSCENE COMMENTS TO DATE!We go back in time more than 3 months to an episode of the "TR Shocks the World" Wrestling Podcast that we thought may never make air. Not only is it some of the most controversial opinions and comments made by Tom Robinson yet, but as we walked into this episode with 10 minutes to prepare and no format whatsoever, it made for an interesting variety of topics that found us all over the place. It took a lot of time and effort, but alas, the final product has been finished. I present to you TR SHOCKS THE WORLD... THE LOST EPISODE!!! Just some of the topics include… The tasteless TR-Nac invades to share what Pedro from the Real World (Season 1) and Cody Rhodes have in common. TR's version of “Tommy Rich” joins for a fun segment to talk WWE Raw, BIG E as WWE Champion, swinging C0cks, Working Memphis with Paul E., Theme Music, and more. Unpopular yet candid and potent opinions on Enzo Amore, Michael Elgin & Joey Ryan. PLUS, TR crosses the line of no return drinking and the result is the MOST OBSCENE (and offensive?) sexually explicit SIZZLIN SIX to date! Wait til' Tom gets to the TOP TWO… YIKES!!! All throughout the show, Tom lets loose with strong comments and/or opinions on the likes of Hannibal, David Bixenspan, Bubba Ray Dudley, AJ Styles, Jay Lethal, Edge, and more! Oh but there's more… Including, Sasha's obsession with “Frog Splash”, The Ric Flair Podcast, LA Knight standing out, NXT War Games, Going to school with Tina Fey, Mark Madden, Tom's Fight with Ric Flair, the Seth Rollins fan attack, Hannibal and Hepatitis, Rich Little, Tom's friendship with John McAdam, Dave Bixenspan, Darth Vader in a Battle Royal, King Chivas, Edge's Return being a flop, Edge vs. Miz feud, Mark Carrano and the garbage bag incident, Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks' flexibility, Ariel Helwani, Bron Breakker, Scott Steiner banned from WWE, the Road Warriors vs. Jeff Gripley & rookie Rick Steiner, Tony D'Angelo and real life mobsters, Enforcer Luciano, Bob Caudle and the dead fish, Johnny Gargano, the Gene Anderson tick, Tom hilariously spends 5 minutes coming up with the word Tourette's as he refuses to move on until he remembers the word, Paige & Alberto beating the $hit out of each other, Toxic Attraction, Von Wagner the son of Beau Beverly, the Shaker Heights Spike, Roderick Strong, “Orientals”, Bruce Prichard brown nosing, DDP & Bigelow walk into a bar, fighting Bubba Ray Dudley the mark, Kofi's Championship run throwing pancakes, Bockwinkel & Heenan throwing waffles, Will Ray grab TR's C0ck if it equals ratings?, Making out with Afa, Valvet Sky's Dating History, more shooting on Nyla Rose, Jim Ross' health, Carmella, Iiconic Iinspiration, “Booping” Kris Statlander, RK-Bro, Tom's dislike for AJ Styles the performer, Omos the Giant, misuse of Bobby Roode, Ray Rowe & Sarah Logan hunting Elk with their bare hands, Miz is cool / Maryse is a bee-otch, Ring of Honor, Reckless Youth, Rob Feinstein, the Briscoe Brothers, meeting Nick Jackson at a casino, Jay Lethal being a nozzle to Tom, enhancement extraordinaire Mike Jackson, and yes even more… Sir back and enjoy 3 hours of unfiltered Tom Robinson goodness in this “LOST EPISODE” of TR Shocks the World! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Following on our episode on entrance music, we move on to the voices of wrestling, and for some, the voices of our childhoods. Commentators like Tony Schiavone, Gorilla Monsoon, and early Vince McMahon are the omniscient narrators of wrestling. Their job is both to guide the viewer through a story and also to describe the action in all of its lush detail. As we say in the episode, "It's the grain of these voices that shapes wrestling, just as much as any feat of athleticism done in the ring." This is the first episode where we open with a sketch featuring our wrestling alter-egos, Miss Noell (cf. Miss Elizabeth), Ravin' David, and Chris as the Matcha Man. If you can make it through this intro without rolling your eyes, then you are the true champion. You'll enjoy Noell's History Corner, where she tells us about the very beginnings of commentators during televised wrestling matches of the 1950s, including a sketch of the earliest, commentator-less wrestling broadcasts of the 1940s, which were early technical experiments in broadcasting. Chris talks about how the Macho Man, in his role as a commentator, narrated one of the most harrowing events of Chris' childhood, the Ultimate Warrior's visit to Paul Bearer's Funeral Parlor. You won't want to miss this brawl down memory lane, as we discuss commentators like AEW's Excalibur, Mid-Atlantic's Bob Caudle, WWF's Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and several others. Hang out with us for another episode, and we promise to see it like we call it.

Butch Reed does his best Luke Cage impression. Silent Bob AKA Kevin Sullivan pulls a fast one of Sting, PS Hayes and JYD. Of course, the main attraction is Ric Flair apparently becoming a legit pimp and trying to hook up Ricky Steamboat and Bob Caudle with his harem of ladies. I'm NOT kidding. This is the one that has "stood the test of time." The very first Starrcade from Thanksgiving night 1983. It was before WrestleMania and became the flagship event of Jim Crockett Promotions and then WCW. It was not a Pay Per View event but was broadcast via closed circuit to many arenas in the then Mid-Atlantic area. Ric Flair vs Harley Race was the featured event, but the event had so much more. Including Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine in a Dog Collar Match; Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle on commentary, Abdullah the Butcher, Ricky Steamboat, the Brisco Brothers, Wahoo McDaniel; and then somewhere backstage a young, green Tony Schiavone. It was also the beginning of the run by Dusty Rhodes as booker of Jim Crockett Promotions. You like blood? You like realism? You like vintage pro wrestling? Les Thatcher became a professional wrestling fan the first time he watched the action on a friend’s television in 1949 at the tender age of eight years old. The beginning of his life in pro wrestling began at what may have been the first Pro Wrestling School in America. Les read about Tony Santos, a promoter in New England, and his wrestling school based in Boston, Massachusetts in a 1959 issue of Wrestling Revue, then the top magazine in the industry, and after writing back and forth he climbed on a Greyhound Bus in February 1960 and traveled to Boston to begin what has been a 44 year love affair with professional wrestling. As a wrestler his career spanned 20 years from July 4 1960 when he stepped into the ring as a pro for the first time against “Cowboy” Ronnie Hill in Blue Hills, Maine. As a broadcaster, Les shared the microphone over the years with hall of famers such as Gordon Solie, Bob Caudle, Lance Russell, and Jim Ross. The very first ever four color WWWF magazine was designed and edited by Thatcher for Vince McMahon Jr. in 1978.As a trainer/teacher for the last ten years Les opened Les Thatcher’s Main Event Pro Wrestling Camp in Cincinnati in 1995 and an “off shoot” of that is the Heartland Wrestling Association which during that period was considered one of the top independent promotions in the country. From 1998 through 2001 HWA promoted the famous “Brian Pillman Memorial Shows” bringing WWF, WCW, and ECW together under the same roof on the same night for the first time in wrestling history.
