If you haven't already, be sure to refresh the Worn & Wound podcast feed this morning, because we have a special bonus pod to start your week. At the recent Windup Watch Fair in New York City, we recorded a very special podcast in front of a live audience with our friends at Collective Horology and some very special guests. Co-moderated by Collective's Asher Rapkin and Zach Kazan, we welcome Brew founder Jonathan Ferrer and Urwerk co-founder Martin Frei to the stage for a lively conversation about how each of these unique horological voices started their brands. We see lots of parallels between Urwerk and Brew. While they exist at opposite ends of the price point spectrum, both are design forward brands with a deep independent streak, and in this discussion we dig into how Jonathan and Martin approached building their brands, separated by decades and in very different watch market climates. Both Jonathan and Martin share revealing stories about the challenges of starting independent watch brands, and including how they leveraged the internet and social media in very different ways, and leaned on their own collector communities to build momentum.

In this podcast , Jonathan and Rory discuss how to trade news headlines. The key is to understand the impact & domino effect these headlines can have on companies & markets. Immersing yourself within the financial markets is key to construct your trade and investment ideas. The example Rory covers, is around Maersk letting go 10,000 workers. We ask, if they are seeing less demand what does this mean for other stocks in the sector? What does this mean for the market, the economy and global trade? We also talk about inflation and deflation problems in China and Japan. How the weak JPY is causing high inflation and how the strong CNY is causing deflation due to imports becoming cheaper. This also means exports are dropping which isn't helping things as China received another huge stimulus pump earlier this week.Jonathan also talks us through the many opportunities that have been in markets this year as we draw to a close. With so many moves in dollar, Jonathan talks us through how he was long dollar from July based off his bias that the fed were not going to cut interest rates earlier this year. Both Jonathan and Rory explain that the cuts in monetary policy there were due around this time, were pushed back so far that it was taken hawkish by traders hence the strong run higher in US Dollar/DXY.Understanding how macroeconomics shape markets is essential to understanding trading and the Two Blokes Trading app is the best place to start.Join our 1500 + members today and sign up for free below

In this episode the Blokes discuss the pros & cons of limit orders. Jonathan and Rory both discuss how & when they use limit orders in different situations. Both Jonathan and Rory highlight that the advantages usually heavily outweigh the disadvantages. It allows you to target a specific target price & have that order waiting to execute even while away from the computer, meaning you will never miss an entry. Most part-time retail traders can't sit in front of a screen 24/7, so by placing limit orders it allows traders to semi automate the process. Rory explains that the only slight disadvantage is in highly volatile markets where the trade can be executed and hit a stop loss in a matter of seconds however, chances of that are very slim out of the covid cycle.Jonathan explains using limit orders correctly can allow you to find optimal entry levels rather than executing a trade at the wrong time. Also limit orders can be highly beneficial when price is trading within a range. For example, If an asset has a strong range and is continuously finding support and resistance at the same levels, orders can help remove any doubts.Similarly both Jonathan and Rory agree that on larger one off trades, limit orders are useful for not missing a big move in the market. For example; recently when Gold hit 1800, before it was there, a lot of people would have thought it was a great level to buy. However, when price reached 1800, people were afraid to buy, having this order in place would have removed any psychological doubts & this will help you trade more objectively. There is no doubt that if used correctly limit orders can improve your success rate & limit your screen time!Make sure to join the app today where Adam, Jonathan and Rory give their daily rundowns of markets and analysis and join over 1500 people in one of the fastest trading communities.Check out the FREE Two Blokes Trading Community for education, analysis & much more!

Is the Santa rally on its way or is this just an overreaction to some bad news that investors think is good news? For a long time now, the narrative of “bad data = good news” has allowed equity markets to rally. However, Rory shares in the app and talks about it on todays podcast that over 75% of major data last week was negative. yet the market takes it as a positive. While that may mean the Fed are not going to hike as much if at all, it does mean there is a deterioration within the economy and it's why Rory says he is exercising caution within the equity space right now.Jonathan discusses the increase in volatility throughout the markets, most notably the fall of the Dollar & the rise of stocks has changed the perspective for now & it's time to reassess. This week is quite on economic front, with the exception of Powell's speech, which may allow the markets to digest last weeks data & offer a clearer picture for the longer term direction of the markets. Jonathan shares his thoughts around the USD and notes that many dollar pairs such as GBP and EUR are all moving higher and taking advantage of this recent dollar weakness. We will have to wait until next weeks CPI report for further clarification of dollar positioning.Speaking of taking advantage of dollar weakness, Gold failed to do so, still hovering shy of $2000 not able to break higher despite the sell off in USD. Both Jonathan and Rory agree that if gold can't move higher now, what will make it move higher? It perhaps doesn't look as attractive as other trades such as FX or the fixed income space.Crude oil rose to nearly $83 on Monday morning trading but remains under pressure despite Saudi Arabia confirming an extension of its 1 million barrels per day additional voluntary production cut until the end of December, while Russia said it would continue with its additional voluntary supply cut of 300,000 bpd from its crude exports as well. Finally, we have another busy week of earnings. The hugely popular Jonathan Drori – writer and plant-lover – returns to 5x15 for a very special conversation with Professor Nicola Spence CBE, Defra's Chief Plant Health Officer and the Head of the UK National Plant Protection Organisation. Both Jonathan and Nicola have been inspired in their love of plants by visits to Kew Gardens from a young age. In this event, they will explore how those early experiences led them both on journeys of discovery to the far reaches of the botanical universe. Join us as Jonathan and Nicola share stories about their love of the natural world, the importance of plant health which we all too often take for granted, some surprising gardening tips and fascinating facts about the botanical world. Jonathan is the author of the runaway best sellers, Around the World In 80 Trees and Around the World in 80 Plants, revealing in awe-inspiring detail how the worlds of trees and plants are intricately entwined with our own history, culture and folklore. Using obscure historical sources and the most up-to-date academic papers, he uncovered wonderful and strange stories about plants and their relationships with us and with each other; from the familiar tomato, to the humble dandelion, the eerie mandrake to the Spanish ‘moss' of Louisiana. As Chief Plant Health Officer, Nicola advises ministers, industry, UK Border Control and others about the risks of plant pests and diseases. Her mission is to stop alien pests and diseases of plants and trees from arriving in the UK and if they do arrive, deal with them as quickly as possible to prevent the economic, social and environmental impacts and losses they cause. Nicola is a plant scientist, who has worked on crop diseases UK and internationally for decades. But plant health threats can be found in the most unlikely places from football pitches, furniture and works of art, to plants with cultural or religious significance, so she has needed to be a tactful diplomat as well. Jonathan Drori is a trustee of The Eden Project and Cambridge University Botanic Garden, an Ambassador for the Woodland Trust and the WWF, and Honorary Professor at Birmingham University's Institute of Forest Research. Previously, Jon was a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and for BBC TV, he was responsible for more than fifty science documentaries and series. He is known for several botanical TED talks, which have been viewed millions of times. Nicola Spence is an expert in plant health and the international plant trade, and a keen gardener. She is the UK's Chief Plant Health Officer and heads the National Plant Protection Organisation. She was previously Chief Scientist at the Food and Environment Research Agency and President of the British Society for Plant Pathology. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, Visiting Professor at Harper Adams University, a member of Court at the University of York and a Trustee of The Yorkshire Arboretum. Nicola's PhD was in Plant Virology at the University of Birmingham. With thanks for your support for 5x15 online. Who is God? And, how can we find God - Bible answers.

This episode is also available as a blog post: http://lovingscripture.com/2021/11/10/1-samuel-19-commentary/ First Samuel 19 Commentary www.lovingscripture.com One cannot achieve godliness by resolutions. The oath that King Saul made amounted to nothing. Salvation doesn't come by New Year resolutions. As Jeremiah puts it, people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps. Either the LORD or the evil one directs a man's life. There is no land in between. Saul may even be very genuine about his oath but he is not in charge. He cannot rule. The Adamic sin means man is no longer the ruler of himself. Saul exemplifies this very unfortunate situation perfectly. Both Jonathan and Michal, Saul's children, love David and consequently save him at different times. The great prophet Samuel shelters David but not even this spiritual refuge can deter Saul's madness. He pursues David until the LORD prevails over his madness and he temporarily joins the prophesying believers. All is well until David succeeds. This is instructive. This isn't just mere jealousy. We get the picture of what the saint goes through as they surrender to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Many times these spiritual battles become physical. You actually wonder why you are sidelined or even hated at your place of work. The evil one possesses individuals and controls them like robots to cause pain and suffering in the lives of God's people. On the other hand, the possession by the Spirit of God leads to humility. In the process of pursuing David, Saul finds himself face-to-face with the presence of the LORD in the company of prophets led by an aged Samuel. Here he lies naked, without his kingly vestments. He is not standing anymore. He lies prostrate before the presence of the LORD. We are reminded of the text that, “at the mention of the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, of those in heaven, those on earth and those under the earth and that every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the Father” Saul's knee not only bows but is ‘cut' completely as he is left lying ‘naked all that day and all that night'. How you wish this was graceful possession by the man who once carried with him the anointing of the LORD! Will this moment stick forever? As we shall find out tomorrow, it didn't. We can learn here that sensual experiences such as this one here for Saul cannot warrant godliness in a soul that is determined to sin. Emotional experiences at the place of worship are not the main thing for a decent Christian walk. The man we are reading about here once had it: anointing, experience, and miracles. The LORD moved powerfully in his life. He prophesied. But that is it. It is all gone and cannot help him now. Now he is so possessed by the evil one that we hardly can tell the difference between Saul and the demon. Simple faith. Trust and obey. This is real godliness. A Christmas Carol Part 3: The Spirit of Christmas PresentHe brought a tear to my eye and halt to my throat, did Old Dickens in this episode. I think he was a man of great humanity who genuinely did care for those who were not as well-off as he was. The only slight caution I had was Old Topper chasing The Plump Sister and getting her in a corner. We inevitably all view behaviour through the lens of our own time and of course this behaviour reminded me of the #MeToo. I certainly wouldn't want my daughters, mother or my partner cornered like this.  But I read it out, because I must make some kind of editorial decisions about which stories I read out. Some, I suppose, I will choose not to read, and if I read them out, I won't abridge them. Except, I recall changing single offensive words that would just be a jolt to the reader. I suppose if the word is not used by the writer to be offensive... but that might be a cop out.  It's all up for debate I know. But yes, this was a lovely episode. The descriptions are wonderful and lots of episodes are superfluous to the narrative, but great fun.  The other observation is about the degree to which Dickens is reporting the Christmas festivities of his period or is actually encouraging them, and in measure therefore creating them.  Were Christmasses as Christmassy as Dickens portrays them? Maybe not before, but certainly afterwards as we all began to emulate what we read and heard in this book, even if we didn't read it or hear it ourselves but only obtained it via the TV. Enjoy your plum pudding. More Christmas Ghost Stories Ebook & PaperbackOh, did I mention my https://amzn.to/3olobIJ (More Christmas Ghost Stories) it out? At the end I've added The Heartwood track: From The Forest, From The Furrows, From The Fields which is on their Secret Rites album. As I say in the episode, this is a canonical folk horror track. The last piece of music is from The Hare & The Moon and is called https://bit.ly/midnighfolk (The Midnight Folk). I talk about my love of John Masefield's book of that name. Of course the Midnight Folk was the sequel to The Box of Delights and that was made into BBC series which I think is enjoying its 36th anniversary this Christmas. We live in an era of remakes and sequels. Sound familiar? That is because August we did Originals, movies where Corey (@coreyrstarr) or Jonathan (@berkreviews) had seen a remake but never the original film that inspired it. This month, they are flipping the script and watching a remake of an original they either loved or, at the very least, saw in the aptly named theme of REMAKES!!! As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 3 - The Fog (2005) Both Jonathan and Corey are fans of John Carpenter's The Fog (1980). There has to be a chance that this 2005 remake directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, and Selma Blair is good, right? Despite only have a 27 Metascore? Well, the premise according to IMDb.com is "A thick mist full of vengeful spirits haunts a prosperous island town off the coast of Oregon, as its inhabitants try to learn their town's dark secret in order to stop it." Sounds similar enough to the original...what could go wrong? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

#160: When Jonathan Mendonsa was 18, he researched which college degrees lead to the highest income. Pharmacy was near the top of the list of high-paying degrees, so Jonathan decided to become a pharmacist. He wasn't motivated by passion or calling. His decision was purely tactical. He wanted to make money. He spent four years in college, followed by another four years of graduate school. By age 28, he held a Doctorate in Pharmacy and an astounding $168,000 in debt. This debt burden might have been bearable if Jonathan loved his chosen profession. For people who love their fields, tuition is the price of being able to enjoy a lifetime of work they love. Unfortunately, that wasn't Jonathan's story. He never held a passion for pharmacy; he viewed it purely as a means to an end. Perhaps it wasn't surprising, then, that shortly after becoming a pharmacist, he realized that this wasn't what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to change careers. He wanted to pursue more meaningful, fun, interesting work. He spent the next four years repaying his student debt. And finally, at age 32, he brought his net worth up to zero. _____ Brad Barrett wasn't thinking about income when he chose his profession. He had received acceptance letters to some Ivy League schools, but he wanted to graduate from college debt-free, so he enrolled at the University of Richmond, which gave him a partial scholarship. While studying there, Brad encountered an accounting professor who challenged him and his classmates in the best possible ways.  Brad felt inspired to major in accounting. His decision didn't come from a rigorous analysis of lifetime income potential. He wasn't scrutinizing labor statistics spreadsheets. He was simply following a route that he found fascinating. After he received his undergraduate degree, Brad decided not to enroll in any further education. Instead, he started working for one of the Big Five accounting firms, with a starting salary in the low $40,000's. He and his future wife both lived at home with their parents for the first few years of their professional life, which allowed each of them to save dramatic amounts. Brad saved more than 90 percent of his after-tax income.  Perhaps it's not surprising that the couple, who now have two children, are financially independent. ____ Both Jonathan and Brad are college-educated professionals in their thirties. They both live in Richmond, Virginia. They're both married with children (Jonathan has a son; Brad has two daughters). Yet their stories could not be more different. What can we learn about careers, work, income, spending, and financial independence from their life experiences? Find out in today's podcast interview with Jonathan and Brad, the co-hosts of the ChooseFI podcast.

Today’s guest is Craig Johnson, an old camp buddy of Jonathan’s. Craig has an extremely busy and full life; he and his wife Liz have been married for 20 years and are both attorneys. Together they have three children — Ben, 16; Sam, 13; and Lucy, 8. Craig shares the lessons he has learned from coaching his own kids, how his career experience as an attorney, lobbyist, and State Senator has shaped his approach towards parenting, the challenge of balance and enjoyment of his kids’ success and the evolution of Craig’s own father as a grandfather. The guys also admit to being a little overeager when texting their kids, and why they can’t be too upset when there is empty ice cream in the fridge.   Key Takeaways: [1:24] Jonathan and Craig met at Camp Taconic. Here they learned a lot about independence (for both the children and the parents) and he now sends his own kids to camp. [3:20] He and his wife Liz have been married for 20 years and he is very grateful for their partnership both as husband and wife and as co-parents. They are both attorneys, with Craig in lobbying and public policy, and Liz in the courtroom as a defense attorney and former prosecutor. And yes, Craig loses all the arguments in the house. Craig was a former State Senator in New York from 2007-2010. [4:49] Craig and Jonathan both have sons named Ben who are teens learning to drive while terrifying their parents. [8:37] Craig finds coaching a rewarding experience and found a great way to bond with his kids while taking part in something they love. [19:16] Both Jonathan and Craig allow their kids to use phones and social media apps, but monitor them to make sure there isn’t any shady business going on. Craig’s wife Liz teaches a class for parents to help them understand and deal with their children using social technology. [27:35] Bar and Bat Mitzvah season is underway, and while it can get expensive and time-consuming, it’s an amazing accomplishment and Craig is extremely proud of how much his sons’ bar mitzvahs got their family together. [36:28] Craig’s dad lives in the very same house that he grew up in, only about a mile and a half away. He had the model attitude as a grandfather where he was there if Craig needed him but trusted him to make the right decisions and learn on his own. [43:31] Craig finds one of the biggest challenges is balancing his dedication to being a father, a husband, and to his career. [45:02] The best part of parenting for Craig is sharing in their successes, whether it’s something big, such as a sports team win or an everyday moment of them memorizing a vocabulary word. [51:29] Karma has come back around for all the years that Craig left an empty ice cream container in the fridge, as his kids to that to him now. [55:47] Both dads are puzzled why their sons don’t have the same rush of getting their driver's license as they did as teens. [58:52] Craig has a lot of interesting work in his pipeline, including Uber, AirBnB, and cryptocurrency. [59:42] Craig is extremely appreciative of his wife’s ability to be a stand out counselor, lawyer, and mother. She is a fantastic example of showing his children the importance of work and responsibility.   Links: Camp Taconic Dentons Law Firm Quotes: “I’m almost in tears when I drop off my kids at high school! I mean that’s good about us, but what’s wrong with us?!” “My son wrote a one-page essay on why he should watch Dexter and I read it and was like ‘okay you could watch it because that was so good.’” “We can’t always be there for them, and we have to let them make those mistakes.” “They each have different jealousies and different desires and it’s just a moving puzzle that changes every day.” “I’ve become a better listener as a parent. You have to listen to your kids and let them talk. They can educate you.”

Jonathan Duhamel was raised in Boucherville, a neighboring town 10 mins drive from Montreal, Quebec. From a comfortable middle-class family, his father, an aeroplane engine mechanic and his mother, a bank cashier, brought him and his younger sister up in the security and space of a suburban ‘white picket fence’ childhood.“ As a big brother, I fought with my sister all the time. I remember my parents didn’t like it, so whenever I hit her” says Jonathan “I would get grounded. If she was hitting me though, it was all fine. I’ve learn a lot from that!” Both Jonathan’s parents were fairly strict, ensuring he understood the value of money from an early age by encouraging him to take part-time jobs outside of school. His first job, as he recalls, was at age 13, picking strawberries. This tough-love gave Jonathan a strong work ethic and the insight that with hard work he would reap his own rewards. Duhamel makes no secret of his love of sport – playing ice hockey, baseball, soccer, etc… as a child and a fervent supporter of his local Montreal Canadian’s ice hockey team, he really relishes sports which has taught him the importance of working in a team. “I’m always going to remember the first Montreal Canadian game I saw. My dad brought me, and they were playing Boston. At the end, we lost 4-3, but it was an amazing game, amazing experience. On the ice, myself, I’ve always been very competitive. Even though I wasn’t the best, the desire to win was always there, and it is something I still have, in everything I do in life. When I do something, I always do it 100%.” The next step, obviously took the young Canadian to college and university. Studying Business Administration and Finance – it was the numbers and maths that really challenged him into this path. After about a year at university, his friends and he started playing poker home games and this suddenly became an overnight passion. Unsure of his vocation, Jonathan decided to take a year off to think about his future. He used this free time to travel around the world with friends and rediscover his own life objectives. It’s also during this time that Jonathan had the chance to focus on his new passion, and this materialized in his first major cash at EPT Prague in 2008 where he placed 10th. His strategy improved mainly by interaction, rather than reading, for Jonathan “There are a lot of very good poker players in Quebec, we all talk strategy together, and I am the player I am now because of them!” A self confessed cash games player, it is only after his initial successes to build a healthy bankroll, that he turned his attention to tournaments. Several other tournament cashes were however dwarfed, by what has now lead to Jonathan Duhamel’s fame in the poker world – winning the coveted WSOP 2010 Main Event Championship. From there, Jonathan’s life transformed, becoming a member of Team PokerStars Pro, touring tournament after tournament with a close group of friends and poker players (winning EPT Deauville High Roller shortly after the WSOP) and writing a book on his life ‘Cards on Table’.
