Explore the timely insights from activist Dean Spade on how reshaping our personal connections can bolster our fight for justice, as featured in his latest book, "Love in a F*cked Up World."This show is made possible thanks our members! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate   Thank you for your continued support!Description:  In a time of climate catastrophe, genocide, mass incarceration and political turmoil, people need to work together – better! That's why lifelong activist Dean Spade has written “Love in a F*ed Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up, and Raise Hell, Together”. Which tools can help people and social justice movements face conflict and emerge stronger (rather than weaker)? Which stories do we tell ourselves that aren't helping us think — or act — in our best interest? In this timely conversation, Spade shares tips on how we might get our interpersonal houses in order so that we're better equipped to show up for others and the causes we care about. Spade is a lawyer, educator, and author of “Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next)”, and “Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of the Law”. He's the director of “Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back!”, and in 2002 he founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project in New York City, a law collective that provides free legal services to trans and gender non-conforming people who are low income and/or people of color. He has useful things to say about romance too, which are worth bearing in mind, as the Valentine's marketing crush hits, as Laura reflects in her commentary.“. . . Most of us are taking in all the bad news by ourselves through a screen . . . One of the best things we can do to support our own wellbeing through the overwhelm is be with others, joining any kind of project in our communities, a creative project, a mutual aid project . . .” - Dean Spade“The typical self-help genre is very focused on the individual. It doesn't contextualize the kinds of suffering that everyone's going through in a broader feminist analysis, anti-capitalist analysis, anti-racist analysis . . . If we understand that our individual suffering is a bunch of bigger scripts, . . . it can be a little bit freeing.” - Dean Spade Guest:  Dean Spade: Author, Love In A F*ed-Up World: How To Build Relationships, Hook Up, And Raise Hell Together & Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next) This show is made possible thanks our members! LAURA FLANDERS - COMMENTARY And one of those came to mind was in 1999, when V, then known as Eve Ensler of Vagina Monologues and V-Day and One Billion Rising fame, filled that 18,000 seat stadium, with women and their allies pledging themselves to stop violence against women and girls, to stop gender-based violence in our lifetime. Improbable? Unlikely? Unpredictable? You bet. They laced the whole place with red caution tape that read “rape-free zone.” Was it surprising? Yes, but it happened all the same, albeit with less media coverage. Other things have happened in the last few years that should surprise us and remind us of what we can accomplish when we decide to. We invested trillions of dollars in infrastructure rebuilding and creation of new jobs. We saw millions of people brought out of poverty thanks to an increase in the child tax credit. We saw pharmaceutical prices brought down. We saw investments in industries that will help reduce climate change. And we saw a pandemic stopped in its tracks, largely, by the very speedy creation of a vaccine. In our lifetime, too, I was reminded this past weekend at Madison Square Garden that we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of a public transportation system. The New York City subway, again the product of commitment, investment of public dollars for the public good. A surprise, perhaps, that we could ever accomplish such things. But we have. And we can do it again. So surprises, bad? Sure. Possible. Surprises, good? I'm putting my belief and confidence there. I think more good surprises are in store for us if we simply put our minds to it and maybe invest, invest a bit of our effort and our cash. Till the next time, I encourage you to spend the week as you will, but stay kind and stay curious. And join me back here next time when we convene a special all-star panel to reflect on Election Day. How do we deal with personal and societal trauma and pain in this moment of war, political polarization, increasing violence, domestic terror, and despair? Experts say we must look at the root causes of our pain, and yet the US is in the grip of a battle over exactly that — with efforts to ban books, censor news, cancel truth-tellers and hide history. How do we come together and overcome  what the US surgeon general says is loneliness on an “epidemic” scale, when our society and culture work to separate us and tell us to heal alone? Today's guests have experienced personal trauma and turned it into fuel for making social change. Continuing the conversation series, “The Edges in the Middle,” presented in collaboration with UC Berkeley's Othering and Belonging Institute, For The Wild is delighted to share Báyò Akómoláfé in conversation with V (formerly known as Eve Ensler, playwright, author, and founder of V-Day and One Billion Rising). Speaking on the theme “The Promise and Limits of Restitution: Returning to ‘Congo,'” Báyò and V dance together in a conversation that shows us portals of possibility that edge us towards deep change. Discussing the Congo as both place and portal, Báyò and V contemplate the persistent and fugitive glimmer of possibility within trauma and repression. As we pay slow, deep attention and care to unraveling and processing our stories, how might we create the sacred space from which movement and growth may flow?   “The Edges in the Middle” is a series of conversations between Báyò Akómoláfé and thought companions like john a. powell, V, Naomi Klein, and more. These limited episodes have been adapted from Báyò's work as the Global Senior Fellow at UC Berkeley's Othering & Belonging Institute. In this role, Báyò has been holding a series of public conversations on issues of justice and belonging for the Institute's Democracy & Belonging Forum, which connects and resources civic leaders in Europe and the US who are committed to bridging across difference to strengthen democracy and advance belonging in both regions and around the world. Báyò's conversations encourage us to rethink justice, hope, and belonging by sitting amidst the noise, not trying to cover it up with pleasant rhythms. Description: “Reckoning” is the new best-selling book from V (formerly Eve Ensler), author of “The Vagina Monologues” and founder of V-Day/One Billion Rising, the global movement to end violence against all women, gender-expansive people, girls, and the earth. Reckoning, writes V, is “the antidote to fascism”. In this Women's History Month special, which includes performances by V and Laurence Olivier Award-winning actress and Tony nominee, Noma Dumezweni, Laura speaks with V about why she changed her name, her long history working for peace, the current pushback against teaching African American history, and the abortion she had at the age of 23 when she was living in a halfway home. What is the reckoning we need, and where can it lead us? What happens if we do NOT reckon?“. . . There was no way I could bring up a child, and that child would've been destroyed. I realized that I could make a decision not to have that child. That was literally the first time in my life that I went and I made a choice about my own body.”  - V (formerly Eve Ensler)“We are living in a patriarchal paradigm . . . but it wasn't always here . . . It requires imagination for all of us to say, is this racist, patriarchal paradigm, the paradigm we choose to live in for eternity? Or do we want to live in a different paradigm and are we going to struggle to dismantle it?  - V (formerly Eve Ensler)Guest:   V (formerly Eve Ensler), Award-winning Playwright, Author & Founder V-Day & One Billion Rising; Best-selling Author, Reckoning, The ApologyThe Show is listener and viewer supported.  That's thanks to you!  Please donate and become a member.Full conversation & show notes are available at Patreon.com/theLFShow Chapters:(0:00:01) - Reckoning(0:10:06) - Bodily Autonomy and Reclaiming(0:22:11) - Rising UpChapter Summaries:(0:00:01) - Reckoning (10 Minutes)This chapter begins with a discussion about the importance of reckoning in today's world. Vee, the author, activist and playwright, formerly known as Eve Ensler, explains how changing her name was a key step in her own reckoning process. She then goes on to discuss how lack of reckoning leads to the repeating of terrible things that have already occurred in the past, particularly in terms of war and violence against women, trans people, and non-binary people. Vee then talks about the role of solidarity and how it is a place of belonging. (0:10:06) - Bodily Autonomy and Reclaiming (12 Minutes)This chapter of the podcast discusses the importance of bodily autonomy for women and the importance of imagining alternatives to the patriarchal paradigm that has been in place for the past 17,000 years. Tony nominee, Noma Dumezweni performance is featured and discussed, as is V's own experience with abortion. V talks about how her abortion was the first autonomous decision she made about her own body, and how it changed her life. The conversation then moves to how to reckon with the continued stealing of bodily autonomy from women and how to respond. (0:22:11) - Rising Up (8 Minutes)This conversation discusses the importance of creating a positive, revolutionary world in which people can turn their pain into power. Through the example of City of Joy, a revolutionary center in the Congo, the conversation delves into the power of creating a space where people can discover their divine power. It then turns to the biblical story of Eve, retelling it to show her as a brave character. The conversation then asks what is the state of the rising of people around the world, particularly those in Afghanistan, Iran, Congo, and Palestine.

Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality Was it a COVID-19 vaccine side effect? Or did he throw his back out—and where could he have thrown it? We don't know, but for the past few days, we tried to heal Capt'n Max's excruciating pain via an array of “pain-killers”—from easy yet debilitating opioids to the controversial but healthier healing power of sexual pleasure. Feeling the pain? Just say YES to some kind of (COVID-safe and consensual) sex! And yes, thank Goddess, Max is feeling much better now. Praise be to the power and glory of pleasure healing. Amen and AWOMEN. It does a body good. We have done many shows about the combination of consensual pain and pleasure that is often involved in spanking, as well as other forms of impact play and BDSM. This show focuses more on unwelcome pain (from injury, sickness or a bad reaction to a vaccine) and how to treat it with sexual pleasure healing. Take the Pain Train to Track Pleasure on the F.D.R. Speakeasy streamliner, where we dine on an array of tasty topics, as well as Gideon's homemade hamantaschen, aka “Pussy Cookies,” a delicious appetizer for our after-show throwback, Purim Rising 2013 (in solidarity with Eve Ensler's One Billion Rising), a dazzling, pornstar-studded, orgiastic masquerade that suddenly spiraled into violence unseen before or after in Bonoboville (except that illegal LAPD raid). Fortunately—before anyone could be killed or hurt badly—we defused the conflict in a Bonobo Way. Why oh why can't America follow the Bonobo Way of peace through pleasure, we wonder as we condemn the recent Biden Bombings. We also laugh (more in fear than fun) at CPAC (now CPAQ) and the Cult of the Golden tRump Love Doll, being worshipped like an idol by a crazy convocation of hypocritical Bible-thumpers. I acknowledge my “ableist” infraction against the “crazy community” in calling the CPAQanon'ers “crazy,” but I can't think of a better adjective (besides sleazy) for these Gross Oligarchy P*mps (GOP). We hammer the final coffin nails into “Mean Old Uncle Rush,” now being *showered* with commentary, including a tweet from one of MY idols, Ellen Barkin. And did I mention sex? When a listener asks about polyamory, we praise this growing movement of natural bonoboësque love. Unfortunately, polyamorous opportunities are limited in the Coronapocalypse, but all is possible in the Erotic Theater of the Mind. Also: What's the critical difference between so-called “cancel culture” and censorship, and what's it got to do with “The People,” aka “the Mob” versus Big Tech, CEOs, celebrities and politicians, aka “Da Rich”? Listen… Speaking of pain, we send well wishes to “Most Bonobo Celebrity” SUZY award winner, Ashley Judd, whose terrible fall and rescue is a tale of pain, healing and gratitude. As our Pain Train pulls into the Pleasure Station, I share one last true story of false love, real lust, pain, pleasure and comedy with “Johnny Peyote Seed” at Naropa Institute. The moral of the story is: if your boyfriend pulls you down the stairs by your hair (ouch!)— no matter how *romantic* he is and even if you were cheating on him with your Tantric yoga teacher—get OUT! She is a doyenne of Indian feminism, a poet, author, feminist and development activist. She is also the South Asia co-ordinator for ‘One Billion Rising'. So, I was thrilled and honoured to have Kamla Bhasin as a guest on my podcast. The most important takeaway for me was the power of alliances local and global to address inequalities in society/the world. Also, that it takes more than legislation to bring about social change. In this episode we speak about her journey to conscious feminism
