In this wide-ranging conversation we talk about the intersection of mental health and spirituality and Dr. Yusim's own path from mathematics, to psychiatry to spirituality. We discuss the 4 ways humans process emotions, the 3 categories of addiction, the power of letting go, what it means to have a heart-opening, which compounds are considered "psychedelic" and the potential of these compounds in mental health, spirituality and treatment.I hope you enjoy this incredible conversation with truly brilliant change-maker. TLDL takeaways/action steps: 1) So many people are unwell but not sick. There's no room in conventional medicine for those who are unwell but NOT sick OR those who are both unwell and sick but want alternatives to medication 2) Hashimoto's: your body attacks your thyroid, stops reducing thyroid hormone (T4). From a functional perspective, Hashimoto's is due to leaky gut (Dr E specifies gluten consumption here too). It starts with a source of inflammation which can be gluten sensitivity, toxins, mold, etc. The exposure is usually never addressed and eventually the body starts producing antibodies against the thyroid 3) Typical Hashimoto's patient: cold all the time, trouble losing weight, tired, family thyroid issues, hair thinning, fatigue. This patient may be symptomatic for YEARS before a diagnosable "illness" is actually diagnosed 4) Typically conventional doctors only do TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test. You can ask your provider for the antibody test if you actually want to do something about it (if positive). 5) It starts with a source of inflammation which can be gluten sensitivity, toxins, mold, etc. The exposure is usually never addressed and eventually the body 6) If you're not feeling WELL - "I don't feel good ITIS", as Dr E puts it: STEP 1: Get the full conventional workup done- you want to know 100% that there is no pathology STEP 2: "Clean up" your diet/heal gut i.) Dr E's definition of a "clean"diet is an intense (but brief!) elimination period; no gluten/dairy/grains or legumes for 30 days. Then reintroduce "intensely" ii) She also mentions using short chain fatty acids, pre/probiotics when appropriate and usually after the reintroduction phase iii) Dr E encourages intermittent fasting, particularly an 18:6 schedule for her autoimmune patients STEP 3: Conventional testing: ferritin, CRP, H pylori, lime disease, check for gingivitis (gum disease); if you are 40+ or have/suspected PCOS hormone panel is helpful too STEP 4: Functional testing: Mold, heavy metals --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

**A word of warning, Like Timothy C. who wrote about the other side of this issue, I've invited Dr Carole Lieberman, MD psychiatrist, masters in public health and fiery soul, opens our conversation with raw honesty about polarized topics of today..I encourage all sides to agree to disagree, therefore this episode feels important in this moment in time.As we have heard from multiple sides and opinions around what's coming up, these days.. this is a power-full conversation. What is this primal bullying that is happening? The disturbing, aggressive communication, fear mongering and intense polarization that is happening in society? In this episode, Carole speaks about therapy vs. meds and making decisions in a crisis. We also look at the difference between kids and grown up version of life.Things get fiery and a little political and in an openness to bringing all information to you, from all sides, this is another important conversation with an incredibly educated and forthright Dr in our community.______Carole Lieberman, M.D., M.P.H Carole Lieberman, M.D., M.P.H. is a board-certified Beverly Hills psychiatrist and an award-winning and bestselling author. Anna Raimondi - Talking to the Dead in Suburbia sponsored by The Angel Cooperative
In episode nineteen of Talking To The Dead In Suburbia, host Anna Raimondi – spiritual medium, motivational speaker, healer, and author – has a fascinating conversation about meditation, brain entrainment, and the healing power of sound with her expert guests: Karen Newell, Dr. Eben Alexander, and Dr. Anna Yusim. As mentioned in the episode, the Spirituality and Mental Health course created by this week's guests can be found at Becomingmorewhole.com. About this week's guests: Karen Newell - Karen Newell is an author and specialist in personal development with a diverse body of work that rests upon the foundation of heart-centered consciousness. Her personal growth programs, workshops, guided meditations and teachings enable individuals to achieve life transformations towards greater self-fulfillment and contentment, quality relationships and choices aligned with one's soul calling. As an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, Karen empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings and other techniques, she teaches how to enter and engage with your inner world to connect to guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness and develop intuition. Karen is co-author with Eben Alexander III, M.D. of Living in a Mindful Universe (2017). At international workshops presented with Dr. Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. Dr. Eben Alexander - After decades as a physician and teacher at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere, renowned academic neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander thought he knew how the brain, mind, and consciousness worked. Memories of his life had been completely deleted, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm – more real than this earthly one! Since his 2008 NDE he has been reconciling his rich spiritual experience with contemporary physics and cosmology. We are conscious in spite of our brain. A pioneering scientist and thought leader in consciousness studies, Dr. Alexander has been a guest on Dr. Oz, Oprah, and many other media programs. His most recent book, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Heart of Consciousness, (co-authored with Karen Newell) has garnered accolades from many scientists around the world who study the mind-body question and the nature of consciousness. His earlier books, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife and The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion, and Ordinary People Are Proving the Afterlife, have collectively spent more than two years atop the New York Times and international bestseller lists. This episode, #109, was previously recorded live with Dr. Jacinta Elder, Dr. Jessica Isom, and Dr. Nicole Rochester. The panel with these well-spoken doctors was prompted after we learned of the events leading up to the death of Dr. Susan Moore. How is it that in 2021, the roots of racial misconceptions affect us so deeply? Dr. Susan Moore's story is eye-opening especially as she recounts her experiences of prejudice from colleagues as she sought care. We needed to talk about this in order to prevent this from happening again. Not only did we cover the documented journey which Dr. Susan Moore traveled, we dived into medical racism, dehumanization of people of color, empathy, bias, dismantling healthcare and medical education as we know it, but most importantly, what can we do TODAY to create a positive outcome. Here are the biographies of the physician panel who took on this critical discussion: Dr. Jacinta Elder is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine physician who focuses her care on Geriatrics. Dr. Elder obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees at Howard University in Biology and Genetics respectively. She subsequently obtained her Doctor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington DC. She has subspecialty training in hematology and oncology as well in which she studied cancer of the blood or leukemia as well as other more common cancers such as cancer of the breast, colon, and lungs. Dr. Elder has had a vast array of professional experiences both in academia and out in private practice. She has even spent some time at the Food and Drug Administration where she worked for a team involved in the approval of treatment for cancer. In addition to her current practice in Geriatrics, Dr. Elder has a passion for optimizing health and wellness with individual and group coaching in nutrition, mindfulness-based practices, and mindset mastery. ________________________ Jessica Isom, MD, MPH, is a board-certified community psychiatrist and Clinical Instructor in the Yale Department of Psychiatry. Her professional interests include working towards eradicating racial and ethnic mental health disparities, mitigating the impact of implicit racial bias on clinical care, and the use of a community-focused population health approach in psychiatric practice. Her anti-racism teaching highlights the history of medical racism, interpersonal challenges in interracial interactions and provides a language for naming and responding to racism at multiple levels. She currently is working as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant and facilitator for individuals, non-profit organizations, and private companies. ________________________ Dr. Nicole Rochester is a board-certified pediatrician, professional health advocate, TEDx, and keynote speaker, author, and the CEO of Your GPS Doc, LLC, an innovative company that helps individuals and their family caregivers navigate the healthcare system. A disconnection from one's soul may present in many ways: anxiety, depression, obsessions, excessive worrying, suicidal thoughts, self-destructive behaviors, psychosis, mania, addictions, and phobias, among many other presentations Dr. Anna Yusim may see in her medical office. Traditional medical and psychiatric practice may attribute the above symptoms or illness to chemical imbalances in the brain that need to be fixed with medications. A deficit in serotonin leads to depression. Prozac increases serotonin and so cures depression. It's as easy as that. Or is it? In many cases, although medications can treat the symptoms resulting from a disconnection from one soul, they rarely treat the underlying etiology, which is the disconnection itself. Only by looking inside oneself and aligning with the deepest part of yourself can you address the root cause of the problem instead of the symptoms that result from it. Complete healing and fulfillment entails unearthing the root cause of the pain. In Dr. Anna Yusim medical practice, only about half of the patients she treats are on medication, which is a relatively low percentage for a psychiatrist. For certain patients, however, medications are a lifeline without which they feel they could not survive. Work of the soul is hard to do, even impossible, if you are so depressed that you cannot get out of bed, or so sleep-deprived from insomnia that you can barely function, or so anxious that you cannot leave the house, or in an opiate withdrawal so painful that you don't know if you will even survive the day. Engaging in soul work is necessary for complete healing, but it is predicated on first being able to function in this world. When clinically indicated, psychiatric medications can sometimes be the very tools that allow one to emerge from the darkness. In Dr. Anna Yusim's work, she delves deeply into the psychological and spiritual tools has have used with her patients and in her own life, to help them and herself connect to the soul and find greater fulfillment. In much of medicine, there is a longstanding, unfortunate split between science and spirituality. Valeria interviews Dr. Anna Yusim an award-winning, nationally recognized psychiatrist, speaker, and author with a private practice in New York City. She is a Lecturer on the Clinical Faculty of the Yale Psychiatry Department. After working as a neurobiology researcher with Dr. Robert Sapolsky Ph.D. and completing her studies at Stanford, Yale Medical School, and the NYU Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Dr. Yusim felt that something was missing from her life. In her quest to find it, she traveled, lived and worked in over 50 countries, while studying Kabbalah, learning Buddhist meditation, and working with South American shamans and Indian gurus. Dr. Yusim has published over 70 academic articles, book chapters, scientific abstracts and book reviews on various topics in psychiatry. She has received numerous awards and distinctions including the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Research Resident Award, the American Psychoanalytic Association Fellowship, the William Webb Fellowship from the Academy for Psychosomatic Medicine, the American Psychiatric Institute for Research & Education (APIRE) Janssen Research Award, the Seed Research Grant from the American Medical Association, First Prize in the Sermo Resident Challenge, the Carta Fellowship from the World Psychiatric Association, the Janet M. Dr Nangia currently serves as Clinical Faculty for the Yale School of Medicine (pending) where he is training tomorrow’s healthcare providers on the importance of incorporating wellness into their own lives, with the hopes that Western healers will continue to be more integrative into their approach and wellness-focused, especially those fields of medicine involved in prevention or treating chronic illness. Dr. Nangia began his medical journey the traditional route, where he graduated with honors with dual degrees in Molecular & Cellular Biology-Genetics and Integrative Biology at the University of California at Berkeley. He later received a Masters Degree in Public Health and a Masters in Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University, where he was ranked number one in his class. He attended medical school at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, where he was on the Dean’s List and started his medicine career at the Los Angeles County General Hospital/USC Medical Center in the dual residency program of Internal Medicine & Pediatrics. Due to seeing the impact of human behavior and psychology on chronic health conditions, he decided to switch fields into Psychiatry. Dr Nangia was introduced to psychotherapy by former president of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Marcia Goin, who authored an APA recommended book on Psychoanalysis. He was also trained in medication management by a well-known pioneer in bio-psychiatry, Dr. George Simpson, developer of the Simson Angus Scale and participant in the famous CATIE medication trial, which Dr Nangia also was involved in through the LA County Psychiatric Emergency Room. Dr. Nangia later served as Chief Resident in Psychiatry at LA County General Hospital/USC and Chair of the LA County Psychiatric Emergency Room Off-Hours Program. After graduating, he then began a fellowship at UC San Francisco School of Medicine in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, but left early due to this program being didactic focused and he went to study directly under the legendary psychotherapy instructor David Burns at Stanford, one of the original developers of cognitive, behavioral, motivational, and acceptance therapies and author of the renowned best-seller, “The Feeling Good Handbook”. This work transformed Dr Nangia’s own life and showed him the tremendous impact of out-of-program study with mentors and peers. While at Stanford, he found another mentor, Dr James Lake, one of the pioneers of Integrative Psychiatry. Dr Nangia later joined Stanford’s Adjunct Clinical Faculty under the Department of Behavioral Medicine and taught therapists and psychiatry residents psychotherapy. He later served as Medical Director for Behavioral Health & Chemical Dependency Outpatient Services at Good Samaritan Hospital, in San Jose. Dr Nangia has been supporting Santa Clara County’s largest private nonprofit mental health organization, Momentum for Mental Health, which primarily serves the Medi-Cal/Medicaid population. He worked as a psychiatrist in their wrap-around program, serving those with the most severe symptoms who are at risk for incarceration, repeat hospitalizations, or homelessness. Over the years, he was also an active Board Member for Momentum, and has held fundraisers for this organization for three years, raising nearly $50,000. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Nangia received Momentum’s Community Service Award for his hands-on approach and care, including going to patients’ homes when they were too ill to make it to the clinic. Dr Nangia is a long-time mindfulness practitioner and was trained to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by Bob Stahl, Jon Kabat Zinn, and Saki Santorelli over 10 years ago. He currently leads guided meditations for his staff daily before starting the work day. His focus over the last few years has been studying wellness and optimal performance, believing the deductive medical model of “getting rid of disease” is outdated when it comes to prevention and chronic illness, while focusing on optimal physical, mental, and social well-being is the way for all health practitioners. He teaches students to live with “Wellness first”, and “Be over Do”, to put their energies into being who they need to be rather than doing what they need to do. He is a single father of three children and enjoys skateboarding, singing, and playing basketball. He is a member of Menlo Church in Mt View and is exploring the integration of spiritual practice (regardless of religion or atheist) into treatment. -Manuj Manuj Nangia, M.D.,M.P.H. Dr. Ursula Whiteside is a licensed clinical psychologist and a member of the Clinical Faculty at the University of Washington. As a researcher, she has been awarded grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This study includes a guided version of NowMattersNow.org which is a program she developed that includes skills for managing suicidal thoughts and is based on DBT and paired with Lived Experience stories. Dr. Whiteside is national faculty for the Zero Suicide Initiative, a practical approach to suicide prevention in healthcare and behavioral healthcare systems. Dr. Whiteside serves on the faculty of the National Action Alliance Zero Suicide Academy. She is also a founding board member of United Suicide Survivors International and a member of the Standards Trainings and Practices Committee for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. As a person with Lived Experience, she strives to decrease the gap between "us and them" and to ensure that the voices of those who have been there are included in all relevant conversations. Nothing about us without us. Suicidal Behavior Disorder is a proposed separate diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition. Firstly, in order to have this diagnosis, an individual has made a suicide attempt within the past two years. Secondly, the criterion for non-suicidal self-injurious behavior is not met during the aforementioned suicide attempts. Thirdly, the diagnosis is not applied to preparation for a suicide attempt, or suicidal ideation. Fourthly, the act was not attempted during an altered mental state, such as delirium or “ confusion.” Finally, the act was not ideologically motivated, i.e., religious or political (American Psychological Association, 2013). A prior history of suicidal behavior is a key predictor for future suicidal behavior. Other environmental factors such as unemployment, financial crisis, bullying, military combat, incarceration, or relationship disruptions are also associated with risk. Although suicidal behavior may co-occur with another psychiatric condition, this is not always the case. Many people who die by suicide have not been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Suicidal behavior is the cause of over a million deaths worldwide every year. Non-fatal suicidal behavior is estimated to be even more common. It is important to create strategies to identify those individuals at risk within the health care system. This is critical because, as mentioned above, many people who complete suicides have not interacted with a mental health worker but may have been seen by a medical professional such as a primary care physician. Defining suicidal behavior disorder as a separate diagnosis in the DSM-5 is important to standardize care in order to develop methods to identify suicidal behavior, document in medical records, and track patients at every level of care. The fact that suicidal ideation waxes and wanes over time can create perilous situation in which key information may be missed. Continuity of care is very important with patients with a risk of suicidal behavioral—some healthcare systems have more robust medical records systems than others. Even in cases when the past suicide attempt is identified, data about suicide risk is often lost during hand-offs and may not be included in discharge summaries (Orquendo & Baca-Garcia, 2014). We guys, most of us, sure love our penis and using it. Sex, getting off, or cutting loose with a good stream of pee just seem to be so manly. Yet, one of the things most men do is take their sexual health for granted. Sure we will use condoms...from time-to-time, or maybe we will begrudgingly get the old finger up the poop pipes once a year, but outside of that we tend to just think we are invincible when it comes to our sexual health. Dr. Dudley Danoff, author of The Ultimate Guide To Male Sexual Health, disagrees, and he should know. In his own words, "I've seen enough Penis's in my practice to fill the Rose Bowl!" For 35 years he's been treating men's sexual health issues and knows first-hand how many men take this area of and throw caution to the wind. In this candid and fun interview we talk penises, STD's, prostates, and everything most me won't talk about with other guys, but should when it comes to their sexual health. About Dr. Dudley DanoffDudley S. Danoff, MD, FACS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and from the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Danoff completed his urologic training and fellowship at Columbia University Presbyterian Medical Center. He served as a major in the U.S. Air Force, after which he joined the Clinical Faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is currently the attending urologic surgeon and founder/president of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Tower Urology Group. Dr. Danoff and his wife, Israeli singer Hedva Amrani, live in Beverly Hills and have two children. Years ago, he developed a keen interest in erectile dysfunction based on his disturbing observation that an increasing number of men were suffering from what he calls “penis weakness,” or PW. He noted that there was very little discussion within the urologic community about the significance of this problem in male genital health. As he looked deeper into this major issue, he realized that the stigma surrounding erectile dysfunction and other penis problems was a force that had been plaguing not only men in modern times but also probably men throughout all of history. He began to speak out and write about the principal characteristics of this alarming pandemic and discovered a deep reality about men and their relationships to their penises: the vast majority of males were severely undereducated about their penises, from its physical function to its effects on their psyche. And for too many years, men who have suffered from self-doubt and anxiety caused by PW have done so without any guidance from the medical community—especially not from the professional urologic community. all-inclusive guide to the major factors affecting male sexual health (https://theultimateguidetomenshealth.com/the-book/) . His aim is to replace ignorance and mythology with factual information and to replace self-doubt with confidence. His goal is to help every man realize and achieve the sex life he desires. As a busy urologic surgeon in Los Angeles, California, he has seen more than 200,000 penises in his professional lifetime. While each is unique, just as hands and feet are unique, they are also remarkably alike anatomically. However, there is enormous variation in how they function in their sexual capacities. He has observed that these differences in functionality and capacity have very little to do with the anatomy of a particular penis or even with a man’s size, looks, level of success, wealth, or status. Mainly, functionality and performance is about how men perceive their own penises. In addition to understanding its biological functions, every man must learn that his penis is an organ of expression. What gives it its power is much more than the condition of its blood vessels and nerves. (https://theultimateguidetomenshealth.com/order/) advocates a transformative...

Individuals living with mental health diagnoses are often marginalized by society, and stigmatization and discrimination may form a barrier to their recovery and social integration. There are a lot of strategies to help combat the stigma associated with mental illness, including sharing information about mental illness; talking openly about mental health; using person-first, non-discriminatory language; and showing compassion. One of the most important strategies is to empower the individual with the behavioral health diagnosis to share their personal story and journey. In this interview, we’ll hear from one such individual, David, as he shares his personal journey from being diagnosed with bipolar disorder to recovery with Dr. Suresh Sureddi and Ms. Cathy Judd. He shares what mental illness feels like for him, the importance of familial and community supports to his recovery, and his experience of stigma related to his mental health condition. At the end of the interview, our featured health care professionals provide a summary of the important messages for our listeners to take away from David’s personal experience. David Swain, MBA is a marketing professional with extensive experience developing national campaigns and successfully forging and optimizing strategic alliances with established Fortune 500 companies and emerging corporate partners. The Theology Workshop welcomed Kristine Culp, Associate Professor of Theology and Dean of Disciples Divinity House; Jeffrey Stackert, Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible; and Cynthia Lindner, Director of Ministry Studies and Clinical Faculty for Preaching and Pastoral Care, to reflect on their own experiences and best practices for creating classroom cultures and environments that intentionally honor the body as a constitutive part of being human. The panelists wrestled with such questions as: How can teachers use their own embodied presence in the classroom—and the embodied presences of their students—to deepen and inflect learning? What kinds of pedagogical practices work to unveil and dismantle oppressions in the classroom that silence or privilege certain embodied experiences? How can existing structures with which bodies may be at odds—physical space, institutional culture—be shifted, challenged, or named in order to create an academic space where bodies are not something to be overcome or managed, but to be received with hospitality as essential parts of human life and even scholarly inquiry?
