Bill Lobdell prefers to be behind the scenes and to “tell the story, not be the story.” With decades of journalism expertise, a book, and an amazing podcast, Bill is not keen to be on “this side” of the camera. So it was really cool to put a face to the name and to the voice. Bill's podcast “Newport in the Rearview Mirror” is not only a historical account of this famed SoCal town, but provides a central clearing house for the incredible stories of Newport Beach's history and all the characters and events that made it what it is today. And the stories are wild, super interesting and diverse; just like Bill.

Do you consider yourself to be curious enough? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, Neil deGrasse Tyson and I explore the importance of retaining our childhood curiosity and how it plays a crucial role in our lives as adults. Neil shares his insights on nurturing curiosity and how fear of failure can hinder our progress in maintaining that innate sense of wonder. During our conversation, Neil also shares his unique perspective on using pop culture in education, the future of AI, and the complexities of quantum physics and philosophy. As an astrophysicist, Neil brings a cosmic perspective to our discussion, offering wisdom and knowledge that will surely spark your curiosity and ignite your passion for learning. Finally, we touch on the challenges and opportunities in transforming the school system, the role of religion, and even ponder hypothetical conversations with interesting historical figures. Don't miss this captivating episode with the one and only Neil deGrasse Tyson as we explore the universe and beyond together. Neil deGrasse Tyson earned his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security. What we discuss: (0:00:01) - How important is it to retaining childhood curiosity and exploration in adulthood? (0:13:08) - What role does pop culture have in education? (0:17:09) - How Neil used Twitter to spark curiosity (0:29:25) - What does Neil think of AI's Future and implicated ethics? (0:38:50) - What do we know to be true in quantum physics and philosophy? (0:54:19) - How can we transforming the school system? (1:04:19) - A discussion about religion, gender, and continuums (1:19:13) - Who would Neil like to have a conversation with if given the opportunity? (1:27:36) - Why you should be Ashamed to die Key Takeaways: Living forever comes with its own set of challenges, including resource conservation, terraforming Mars, and the lack of urgency in life. We explore the concept of 'escape velocity of aging,' where the number of years that passes equals the increase in the average life expectancy of civilization, and how it could lead to humanity living forever. However, living forever comes with a bigger existential problem. See, knowing our mortality gives us meaning to our lives and how living forever could potentially lead to a life with no meaning. Curiosity and exploration are important. However, most parents have a natural instinct to protect their child may prevent them from learning important lessons in life. Think of how a seemingly mundane event such as a child playing with an egg can become an entire conversation about the natural world, and how the cost of ignorance can be more expensive than the cost of education. There are three categories of truth: personal truth, objective truth, and truth that is repeated. We acknowledge personal truths can invoke powerful emotions and even lead to armed conflict. Each one of these truths have their own characteristics that make it true in its own definition. Connor Crawford | Pike Robotics - Autonomous Robotic Inspection Platform Transforming Inspection of Oil & Gas facilities through Custom Robotic Solutions Pike Robotics was spun out of UT's Nuclear and Applied Robotics Group and originally funded by Phillips 66 to help with the real need they have for maintaining their product storage and refining facilities. We provide a next-gen robotic solution for in-service inspection of floating roof storage tanks (simulation and demo of robot Here) (Inspection results video Here). Our alternative to manned entry inspections increases safety of personnel, reduces operational issues associated with confined space permits and tank downtime, and accurately quantifies previously subjective inspection results. This approach also makes the seal inspection process simpler and less costly to the tank owner operators. The ability to monitor a large source of methane emissions also allows Pike to play an important role in cleaning up our environment, while at the same time improving the Environment, Social, & Governance scores of many companies in the Energy space. www.pikerobotics.com About Connor: Connor is the CEO & Co-Founder of Pike Robotics. He officially transitioned into the world of Robotics by returning to graduate school at UT Austin in 2019 and working as a GRA for the Nuclear and Applied Robotics Lab (NRG). While pursuing research and studies, he formed a business to commercialize the technology directly related to his research. This novel wall-climbing inspection robot technology will improve maintenance operations in the Energy industry. For most of his adult life, Connor has been involved in all aspects of engineering, from mechanical design and analysis to electronics to programming. He spent four years in the Aerospace Industry, working mainly for Lockheed Martin as a design engineer on the F-16 retrofit team, a manufacturing engineer on the Dream Chaser spaceship, and other Classified Programs. --- This episode is sponsored by Brex: Brex is the all-in-one financial toolkit for every scaling business. Carter is joined by special guests Barbara Kay and Chase Matheson. They discuss the Pope's apology to the indigenous population of Canada for alleged atrocities committed by residential schools. Barbara observers that not only is there a lack real evidence of such atrocities, but there is even counter evidence, and the three examine the motivation and ideology behind the vilification of Westerners. Next, they discuss the crisis in Ukraine. Chase questions the validity of all information related to the conflict, and Barbara emphasizes Putin's expansionist agenda. They all agree that the Ukrainian people are suffering unjustly and move on to the topic of Hunter Biden's laptop and the left-leaning media's willing suppression of inconvenient stories. Barbara offers a ray of hope by citing the rise of Substack and independent journalism. Chase rounds out the episode with the story of Tommy Robinson's recent detainment in--and deportation from-- Mexico. Chase Matheson Chase worked in the Aerospace Industry until he was abruptly fired for organizing the wrong-thinking OpenTennessee Rally in April 2020. But he refused to stand silent while so many of his fellow patriots were being censored, silenced, and bullied into keeping their political opinions to themselves. He went on to found the Patriot Punk Network and has spent the last two years uncovering stories that the mainstream press ignores or misrepresents.
