Caroline Paul is a a role model as a female adventurer. She's mountain biked in the Andes, climbed Denali and sought adventure wherever possible. As she ages, she continues to push her bounds. But she asks: Why aren't women, like men, encouraged to keep adventuring into old age? And what, exactly constitutes “old age”? As an aging boomer myself, Caroline's story resonates strongly. Do we discourage women (at any age) from being more adventurous? What are the societal standards we consciously and unconsciously tell our children? And what are the stories we convey about women as they approach their sixties and beyond? Is it a story of frality and decline, or one of continuous learning and adventure? Caroline's perspective will get you thinking. Thinking about what it is you truly want to do, especially in the outdoors. Because it's in the outdoors that we find awe, adventure and often meaning. Caroline Paul's youthful adventures began as one of the first women to join the San Francisco Fire Department back in 1989, a story she recounts in her bestselling memoir, "Fighting Fire." In her latest book, "Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age," Paul demonstrates how a lifelong relationship with outdoor adventure enriches the lives of women well into their older years.
Caroline Paul is an author, adventurer, surfer, pilot and former firefighter who has published 7 books including The Gutsy Girl and Fighting Fire. Her most recent book Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking—How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age is an exploration into the science and psychology of outdoor adventures and our relationship with these activities, typically associated with youth and adrenaline, as we age. As Caroline writes "Ultimately, I am my best self in the outdoors - curious, brave, and present." Tough Broad acknowledges that older women are less visible in the outdoor adventure world as they age, but seeks to explore and uncover the benefits when they do continue to participate in and take up these types of activities later in life. In this conversation, Caroline shares what motivated her to write Tough Broad and her own thoughts on positive ageing, the importance of awe and the power of gratitude. She highlights the research around the benefits of time spent in the outdoors as well as the stories of the women she met and shared adventures with, who are finding ways to thrive into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. We know that a positive mindset is good for your health, but did you realize it can change how you age? In this episode, host Paula Felps talks with lifelong adventurer and New York Times bestselling author Caroline Paul about her new book, Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age. In Caroline's book, you'll meet inspiring women in their 70s, 80s and beyond who combine a positive mindset with outdoor adventure to defy common beliefs about aging. Caroline also shares the science and psychology of how outdoor adventure affects both your brain and your body — and can help you become more active, joyous, and adventurous later in life. In this episode, you'll learn: How a negative view of aging changes your brain. Why outdoor adventure isn't usually encouraged for older women—and why it should be. The five pillars for fulfilling aging and the role going outside plays in them.
Caroline Paul lives in San Francisco. Her book "Tough Broad" is about the science and psychology of aging for women and our place in the outdoors as we do so.
Why slow down as you get older? Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure: From mountain biking in the Bolivian Andes to pitching a tent, mid-blizzard, on Denali, she has never been a stranger to the exhilaration the outdoors can hold. Yet through it all, she has long wondered, Why aren't women, like men, encouraged to keep adventuring into old age? Now she is sharing her quest to understand not just how to live a dynamic life in a changing body, but why she says we must. She dives deep into the current research on aging and highlights the results with the stories of women like 93-year-old hiker Dot Fisher-Smith, 80-year-old scuba diver Louise Wholey, 52-year-old BASE jumper Shawn Brokemond, 64-year-old birdwatcher Virginia Rose, and the many septuagenarian Wave Chasers who boogie board together in the San Diego surf. These women aren't experts. But their experiences and the scientific studies that back them up offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason for women to sell themselves short. She's chronicled it all in her new book Tough Broad, a high-spirited call for women to embrace the outdoors, not back away from it, in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. Bring your taste for adventure and hear this New York Times-bestselling author share her funny, inspiring, deeply researched exploration into the science and psychology of the outdoors and our place in it as we age. From hang gliding to paragliding, from flying small planes to training for the US Olympic team as a luger, Caroline Paul's life is a series of thrilling escapades. As one of the first female firefighters in the San Francisco Fire Department, Caroline faced challenges head-on. Her autobiography "Fighting Fire" chronicles her remarkable 13-year journey with the department as one of 15 women out of 1500 men. She was also the very first woman on the Rescue team, which was tasked with getting people out of collapsed buildings and finding bodies in the bay. These days, she takes to the skies in a gyrocopter, surfs the San Francisco Bay, and zips through the city streets on her electric skateboard – proving age is just a number. With seven books under her belt, including a New York Times bestseller, Caroline explores the intersection of outdoor adventure and aging in her latest work, "Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking, How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age.” Through science-backed insights and inspiring stories of women in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s, she shows us that the best adventures lie ahead. Join us as we discuss Caroline's latest book, delving into the exhilarating world of outdoor adventure and discovering how it enriches our lives as we age. Get ready to be inspired! “People have come up to me and said it starts as young as 40 or even 30, that our older age is going to be a time of frail bones, cognitive decline. We're going to be boring. We're going to, we're becoming culturally irrelevant. And why this is so dangerous is because, well, first of all, we start pulling back, but second of all, it really makes us dread our own aging journey.” - Caroline Paul What we discuss in this episode: - The five pillars for fulfilling aging. - What inspired Caroline to write Tough Broad. - The health benefits of outdoor adventure. - How mindset about aging can predict how we'll age. - The power and importance of experiencing awe. - How novelty keeps your brain healthy. - What does using GPS do to your memory? - How to unearth your inner explorer. We did rivers that hadn't been done before and that kind of thing. I mean, it's cool to be first at things. When I was a firefighter, I wanted to be the first into the fire.”“There are some [awe] triggers for awe. And one of them is just vastness.”“Actually, turning your focus away from your self outward has been shown to be much better for your mental health. I'm not taking away from therapy or massages or anything, but it's worth saying that if we need to feel better, focusing outwardly is a valuable component of self-soothing.”Connect with CarolineWebsiteTough Broad BookInstagramLinkedInFull Episode Transcript
It's no secret that girls – and women – haven't traditionally had role models for adventure- seeking and exploration as we age. Even as young girls, we're taught to "be careful" while boys are taught to "be strong and brave." It's maddening. Author Caroline Paul, a longtime adventurer, started to notice the massive decline in the number of women she would see when she would go out paddle boarding, skateboarding, or surfing. In her late 50's she was asking the questions like, “Why is this happening?” and, "Shouldn't we be experiencing adventure at ANY age?” That's what her new book, Tough Broad seeks to answer with the women Caroline interviews in her book. I'm talking hikers, wing walkers, birdwatchers, BMX racers, boogie boarders, swimmers, and more. These women aren't experts. But their experiences and the scientific studies that back them up offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason for women to sell themselves short. One thing that is clear: Adventure doesn't have to be some adrenaline filled, death-defying act, although there is some of that in this book. No, true adventure and self fulfillment can start with a walk outside. The more time you spend outdoors and the more positive your view on aging, the happier you will be. That can indeed make you a tough broad. Caroline Paul joins us from San Francisco. ________________________ Bio Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure. Now 60, she expects this new stage of life to be every bit as invigorating and full of high adrenalin escapades as the last. But as she skateboards, paddles a SUP, or surfs in cold winter swell alongside many men her age, she sees fewer and fewer older women. Isn't the outdoors a vital elixir? Shouldn't adventure be something we pursue as we age? Caroline grew up in Connecticut, graduated from Stanford University and originally planned to be a documentary filmmaker. In her adult life, Caroline has been an extremely active athlete: she's not only been a white-water raft guide and a private pilot, but also has competed in the U.S. Nationals for the sport of Luge, mountain-biked in such places as China and Vietnam, flown her para-glider in Brazil, sea-kayaked in Alaska, and skied the back country of Denali and the Sierras. One of the first women to join the San Francisco Fire Department, Caroline wrote the book, "Fighting Fire", about her experiences as a firefighter; this book was published, to great acclaim, in 1998. Caroline is also the author of the New York Times bestseller "The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure" and "Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology", which has been translated into fifteen languages, the middle-grade book "You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World", and the novel "East Wind, Rain". Her TED Talk, “To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure,” has been viewed over 2 million times. So I realized during the research of this book that we need to have community as we age. We need to have purpose as we age. We need to have novelty. And of course there's health. And then the final one, which is lesser known, is the positive mindset about our own aging. And if you go outside you actually in one fell swoop hit all of those." On Awe "There was adrenaline, but that wasn't the actual experience. And what I found was that what I was experiencing was awe. And by the time I handed in my book in there had been other books about it, but I did not know much about it at all when I was writing it. And I realized that awe is what you experience in the face of something bigger than you. And it's mostly considered a religious word most of the time, but we're bringing it more into our vocabulary. But all is something obviously that the outdoors often inspires and turns out it's really good for you.

New York Times-Bestselling author Caroline Paul (The Gutsy Girl) has been an outdoor adventurer her whole life. From mountain biking in the Bolivian Andes to pitching a tent, mid blizzard on Denali to flying experimental planes, Paul has never been a stranger to the beauty and benefits of outdoor activity. But as she hit her mid-fifties and was often the only woman paddling a surfboard or riding a skateboard, she began to wonder why women, like men, aren't encouraged to keep adventuring into old age. “Isn't being outside a vital elixir?” she writes. “Isn't adventure enlivening, and an important challenge? Why, then, aren't older women out here with me?” In her newest book, TOUGH BROAD: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking―How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age (March 5, 2024; 9781635576498), Paul embarks on a quest to understand how not just to live a dynamic life in a changing body in defiance of societal expectations but why we must. Along the way, she uncovers the science and the psychology that shows how outdoor adventure may be the single best solution for a healthy brain, a vital body, a confident mindset, and a longer, happier life, and meets women whose outdoor activities have changed their outlook on growing older, bringing them fulfilment, community and endless joy. Combining scientific research, cultural studies, medicine, psychology, and memoir, Paul travels the country sharing women's narratives alongside her own incredible experiences, illustrating how outdoor activity positively affects a person's spirit, body, brain, and heart. From BASE jumping with 54-year-old Shawn Brokemond in Yosemite National Park to scuba-diving with 80-year old Louise Wholey, riding BMX bikes with 74-year-old Miss Kittie, the oldest female racer competing in the United States today, to meeting the weekly group of septuagenarian wave catchers who boogie board together in the San Diego surf, these women's stories offer important insights into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason to sell yourself short. more: getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org
Caroline Paul is 60 years old and she rides a one-wheel, paddle boards wherever she pleases, and as the endurance swimmer Diana Nyad put it, is “the toughest broad I know.” But in her new book, Tough Broad, Paul sets out to show that all kinds of outdoor adventure from BASE jumping to bird watching can enrich the lives of women as they get older in a society that tells them to simply fade to irrelevance. We'll be talking awe and novelty, accepting loss and challenging norms. As she writes, “This is not a book about adrenaline, it is a book about exhilaration. It is not about bravado, it is about bravery.” Guests: Caroline Paul, author, "Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking-How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age" and "The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure
Young people don't have a clue about our potential as aging women and, you know what? Most aging women don't either. We're fed a narrative that we're supposed to slow down as we age, become less adventurous, and settle into a more “stable” cautious life. A pervasive myth, even, is that women no longer want these aspects of fun, recklessness and exhilaration, but is this true?Author, Caroline Paul, explores this topic in today's conversation with Sara Gross. Her latest book, TOUGH BROAD, is a deeply researched exploration into the science and psychology of the outdoors and our place in it as we age. Caroline spoke with adventurous women around the country about their aging journeys and the activities that have changed their lives – including BASE jumping, wing-walking, flying, swimming, orienteering, walking, scuba diving, boogie boarding and BMX riding – and examines the different ways that activity and the outdoors can help us age better, become happier, and improve our spirit, mind, body, and heart. As you'll hear, it's never too late to learn and explore something new, even if it is just a simple walk outdoors. Our brain is constantly rewiring and can become even more innovative and creative with our pursuits as we age.So whether it's bird watching, mountain biking, or (yes) even wing walking, know that adventure awaits, regardless of your age.Order TOUGH BROADRegister for the Feisty Summer STRONG Course: https://www.womensperformance.com/strong Sign up to Receive The Feisty 40+ Newsletter:https://www.feistymenopause.com/blog/Feisty-40-plus Sign up to Receive The Feist Newsletter:https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ https://www.womensperformance.com/ Support our Partners:MOTTIV: Get two months of full premium access with the code FEISTY at mymottiv.com Lagoon Sleep: Go to LagoonSleep.com/performance and take the 2 minute sleep quiz to find your match, and then use the code PERFORMANCE for 15% off your first purchase

Cathy and Todd share a quote from Gutsy Girl author Caroline Paul about how we can use “micro-bravery” to handle our fear. They discuss why bravery can mean different things to men and women, and why it's hard to differentiate between fear, excitement, and other strong feelings. They talk about ball players who get the “yips”, the movie Get Out, and explain why The Babadook represents repressed grief and anger.
