Caroline Paul is a a role model as a female adventurer. She's mountain biked in the Andes, climbed Denali and sought adventure wherever possible. As she ages, she continues to push her bounds. But she asks: Why aren't women, like men, encouraged to keep adventuring into old age? And what, exactly constitutes “old age”? As an aging boomer myself, Caroline's story resonates strongly. Do we discourage women (at any age) from being more adventurous? What are the societal standards we consciously and unconsciously tell our children? And what are the stories we convey about women as they approach their sixties and beyond? Is it a story of frality and decline, or one of continuous learning and adventure? Caroline's perspective will get you thinking. Thinking about what it is you truly want to do, especially in the outdoors. Because it's in the outdoors that we find awe, adventure and often meaning. Come join the conversation.       What they're saying:   “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove   “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. Caroline Paul is an author, adventurer, surfer, pilot and former firefighter who has published 7 books including The Gutsy Girl and Fighting Fire. Her most recent book Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking—How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age is an exploration into the science and psychology of outdoor adventures and our relationship with these activities,  typically associated with youth and adrenaline, as we age. As Caroline writes "Ultimately, I am my best self in the outdoors - curious, brave, and present." Tough Broad acknowledges that older women are less visible in the outdoor adventure world as they age, but seeks to explore and uncover the benefits when they do continue to participate in and take up these types of activities later in life. In this conversation, Caroline shares what motivated her to write Tough Broad and her own thoughts on positive ageing, the importance of awe and the power of gratitude. She highlights the research around the benefits of time spent in the outdoors as well as the stories of the women she met and shared adventures with, who are finding ways to thrive into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. Why slow down as you get older? Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure: From mountain biking in the Bolivian Andes to pitching a tent, mid-blizzard, on Denali, she has never been a stranger to the exhilaration the outdoors can hold. Yet through it all, she has long wondered, Why aren't women, like men, encouraged to keep adventuring into old age? Now she is sharing her quest to understand not just how to live a dynamic life in a changing body, but why she says we must. She dives deep into the current research on aging and highlights the results with the stories of women like 93-year-old hiker Dot Fisher-Smith, 80-year-old scuba diver Louise Wholey, 52-year-old BASE jumper Shawn Brokemond, 64-year-old birdwatcher Virginia Rose, and the many septuagenarian Wave Chasers who boogie board together in the San Diego surf. These women aren't experts. But their experiences and the scientific studies that back them up offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason for women to sell themselves short. She's chronicled it all in her new book Tough Broad, a high-spirited call for women to embrace the outdoors, not back away from it, in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. Bring your taste for adventure and hear this New York Times-bestselling author share her funny, inspiring, deeply researched exploration into the science and psychology of the outdoors and our place in it as we age. Our extraordinary guest today is a true adventurer at heart. From hang gliding to paragliding, from flying small planes to training for the US Olympic team as a luger, Caroline Paul's life is a series of thrilling escapades.   As one of the first female firefighters in the San Francisco Fire Department, Caroline faced challenges head-on. Her autobiography "Fighting Fire" chronicles her remarkable 13-year journey with the department as one of 15 women out of 1500 men. She was also the very first woman on the Rescue team, which was tasked with getting people out of collapsed buildings and finding bodies in the bay. These days, she takes to the skies in a gyrocopter, surfs the San Francisco Bay, and zips through the city streets on her electric skateboard – proving age is just a number.   With seven books under her belt, including a New York Times bestseller, Caroline explores the intersection of outdoor adventure and aging in her latest work, "Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking, How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age.”  Through science-backed insights and inspiring stories of women in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s, she shows us that the best adventures lie ahead.   Join us as we discuss Caroline's latest book, delving into the exhilarating world of outdoor adventure and discovering how it enriches our lives as we age. Get ready to be inspired!   “People have come up to me and said it starts as young as 40 or even 30, that our older age is going to be a time of frail bones, cognitive decline. We're going to be boring. We're going to, we're becoming culturally irrelevant. And why this is so dangerous is because, well, first of all, we start pulling back, but second of all, it really makes us dread our own aging journey.” - Caroline Paul   What we discuss in this episode: - The five pillars for fulfilling aging.  - What inspired Caroline to write Tough Broad. - The health benefits of outdoor adventure. - How mindset about aging can predict how we'll age. - The power and importance of experiencing awe. - How novelty keeps your brain healthy. - What does using GPS do to your memory? - How to unearth your inner explorer.   Resources: - Caroline Paul's website: Caroline Paul - https://www.carolinepaul.com/ - Her new book: Tough Broad — Caroline Paul - https://www.carolinepaul.com/tough-broad - Her TED Talk: Caroline Paul: To raise brave girls, encourage adventure | TED Talk - https://www.ted.com/talks/caroline_paul_to_raise_brave_girls_encourage_adventure - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carolinembpaul/ - Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/carowriter - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/caroline.paul.750/ - BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough: bioptimizers.com/switch4good - http://bioptimizers.com/switch4good   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. It's no secret that girls – and women – haven't traditionally had role models for adventure seeking and exploration as we age. Even as young girls, we're taught to "be careful" while boys are taught to "be strong and brave." It's maddening.  Author Caroline Paul, a longtime adventurer, started to notice the massive decline in the number of women she would see when she would go out paddle boarding, skateboarding, or surfing. In her late 50's she was asking the questions like,  “Why is this happening?” and, "Shouldn't we be experiencing adventure at ANY age?” That's what her new book, Tough Broad seeks to answer with the women Caroline interviews in her book. I'm talking hikers, wing walkers, birdwatchers, BMX racers, boogie boarders, swimmers, and more. These women aren't experts. But their experiences and the scientific studies that back them up offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason for women to sell themselves short. One thing that is clear: Adventure doesn't have to be some adrenaline filled, death-defying act, although there is some of that in this book. No, true adventure and self fulfillment can start with a walk outside. The more time you spend outdoors and the more positive your view on aging, the happier you will be.  That can indeed make you a tough broad.   Buy Tough Broad - From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking - How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age Support the Podcast through BuyMeACoffee.com - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/CarrieBarrett   "I Could Never Do That" Website - https://www.podpage.com/icouldneverdothat/  "I Could Never Do That" Instagram - @icouldneverdothat Theme Music: Your Love by Atch -License: Creative Commons License - Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0)

Caroline Paul joins us from San Francisco. ________________________ Bio Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure. Now 60, she expects this new stage of life to be every bit as invigorating and full of high adrenalin escapades as the last. But as she skateboards, paddles a SUP, or surfs in cold winter swell alongside many men her age, she sees fewer and fewer older women. Isn't the outdoors a vital elixir? Shouldn't adventure be something we pursue as we age? Caroline grew up in Connecticut, graduated from Stanford University and originally planned to be a documentary filmmaker. In her adult life, Caroline has been an extremely active athlete: she's not only been a white-water raft guide and a private pilot, but also has competed in the U.S. Nationals for the sport of Luge, mountain-biked in such places as China and Vietnam, flown her para-glider in Brazil, sea-kayaked in Alaska, and skied the back country of Denali and the Sierras. One of the first women to join the San Francisco Fire Department, Caroline wrote the book, "Fighting Fire", about her experiences as a firefighter; this book was published, to great acclaim, in 1998. Caroline is also the author of the New York Times bestseller "The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure" and "Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology", which has been translated into fifteen languages, the middle-grade book "You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World", and the novel "East Wind, Rain". So I realized during the research of this book that we need to have community as we age. We need to have purpose as we age. We need to have novelty. And of course there's health. And then the final one, which is lesser known, is the positive mindset about our own aging. And if you go outside you actually in one fell swoop hit all of those." On Awe "There was adrenaline, but that wasn't the actual experience. And what I found was that what I was experiencing was awe. And by the time I handed in my book in there had been other books about it, but I did not know much about it at all when I was writing it. And I realized that awe is what you experience in the face of something bigger than you. And it's mostly considered a religious word most of the time, but we're bringing it more into our vocabulary. But all is something obviously that the outdoors often inspires and turns out it's really good for you.

New York Times-Bestselling author Caroline Paul (The Gutsy Girl) has been an outdoor adventurer her whole life. From mountain biking in the Bolivian Andes to pitching a tent, mid blizzard on Denali to flying experimental planes, Paul has never been a stranger to the beauty and benefits of outdoor activity. But as she hit her mid-fifties and was often the only woman paddling a surfboard or riding a skateboard, she began to wonder why women, like men, aren't encouraged to keep adventuring into old age. “Isn't being outside a vital elixir?” she writes. “Isn't adventure enlivening, and an important challenge? Why, then, aren't older women out here with me?” In her newest book, TOUGH BROAD: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking―How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age (March 5, 2024; 9781635576498), Paul embarks on a quest to understand how not just to live a dynamic life in a changing body in defiance of societal expectations but why we must. Along the way, she uncovers the science and the psychology that shows how outdoor adventure may be the single best solution for a healthy brain, a vital body, a confident mindset, and a longer, happier life, and meets women whose outdoor activities have changed their outlook on growing older, bringing them fulfilment, community and endless joy. Combining scientific research, cultural studies, medicine, psychology, and memoir, Paul travels the country sharing women's narratives alongside her own incredible experiences, illustrating how outdoor activity positively affects a person's spirit, body, brain, and heart. From BASE jumping with 54-year-old Shawn Brokemond in Yosemite National Park to scuba-diving with 80-year old Louise Wholey, riding BMX bikes with 74-year-old Miss Kittie, the oldest female racer competing in the United States today, to meeting the weekly group of septuagenarian wave catchers who boogie board together in the San Diego surf, these women's stories offer important insights into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that growing older is no reason to sell yourself short. more: getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

Young people don't have a clue about our potential as aging women and, you know what? Most aging women don't either. We're fed a narrative that we're supposed to slow down as we age, become less adventurous, and settle into a more “stable” cautious life. A pervasive myth, even, is that women no longer want these aspects of fun, recklessness and exhilaration, but is this true?Author, Caroline Paul, explores this topic in today's conversation with Sara Gross. Her latest book, TOUGH BROAD, is a deeply researched exploration into the science and psychology of the outdoors and our place in it as we age. Caroline spoke with adventurous women around the country about their aging journeys and the activities that have changed their lives – including BASE jumping, wing-walking, flying, swimming, orienteering, walking, scuba diving, boogie boarding and BMX riding – and examines the different ways that activity and the outdoors can help us age better, become happier, and improve our spirit, mind, body, and heart. As you'll hear, it's never too late to learn and explore something new, even if it is just a simple walk outdoors. Our brain is constantly rewiring and can become even more innovative and creative with our pursuits as we age.So whether it's bird watching, mountain biking, or (yes) even wing walking, know that adventure awaits, regardless of your age.Order TOUGH BROADRegister for the Feisty Summer STRONG Course: https://www.womensperformance.com/strong Sign up to Receive The Feisty 40+ Newsletter:https://www.feistymenopause.com/blog/Feisty-40-plus Sign up to Receive The Feist Newsletter:https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ https://www.womensperformance.com/ Support our Partners:MOTTIV: Get two months of full premium access with the code FEISTY at mymottiv.com Lagoon Sleep: Go to LagoonSleep.com/performance and take the 2 minute sleep quiz to find your match, and then use the code PERFORMANCE for 15% off your first purchase

Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!

Do differences between men and women, and boys and girls, actually exist? What challenges are at play that make it difficult for women to be "on par" with men in the workplace and financially? How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact women's careers?   Jenna Fisher, the author of To the Top: How Women in Corporate Leadership are Rewriting the Rules for Success, joins Marti & Erin of Mom Enough® to answer these questions and more! She offers compelling insights on disparities between men and women in job titles and pay, women's career timelines, and how much time women want to spend working. Tune in to learn more about how women can bridge gender disparities, be successful, and raise their daughters to do the same.   WHAT STEPS HAVE YOU TAKEN TO ATTAIN SUCCESS AS A WOMAN? How have you experienced what Jenna Fisher discusses as far as disparities in pay and job titles? What would be your ideal work schedule and how would that contribute to your attainment of career goals? In what ways has motherhood affected your career? What factors inhibit or allow you to be more successful as a woman?   WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SUCCESS FOR WOMEN? ❉ EMPOWERING GIRLS TO BECOME STRONG WOMEN: A DISCUSSION OF WORDS, BODY LANGUAGE AND DARING TO TAKE UP SPACE. Longtime educator and founder of aWe, Inc. (Academy for Women's Empowerment), Kristi Hemmer joins Marti & Erin for an important and provocative discussion of the ways girls and women give away their power through speech, body language and attributions that dismiss their own talent and hard work. Listen with a friend and then consider how you can claim your own power and raise your daughters to do the same.   ❉ RAISING A “GUTSY GIRL”: A CONVERSATION WITH ADVENTURER AND AUTHOR CAROLINE PAUL. Caroline Paul believes we too often undermine girls' competence and self-esteem and deprive them of exhilarating adventures. So she's written a unique guidebook for girls (and women!) called The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure. This book is packed with stories of her own adventures and those of other daring women, practical tips on changing a tire or climbing a mountain, and space for the reader to journal about her own escapades. Caroline brings her ideas to life in this enthusiastic conversation with Marti, who describes a few adventures of her own! You won't want to miss this episode of Mom Enough.

In 1989, Caroline was one of the first female firefighters in San Francisco—1 of 15 women out of a crew of 1,500. For thirteen years, every day on the job was an adventure. She published a memoir about her experience, and later wrote The Gutsy Girl and You Are Mighty, a practical guide for young activists. Caroline Paul is the ultimate BADASS. She has spent her life following her heart and dreams wherever they have taken her, including a 13 year career as one of San Francisco's first fire WOMEN, white water rafting on rivers all over the world that have never been rafted, kayaking around various countries and micro flighting with the world's elite, just to name a few.In this episode, The Two Jess(es) sit down for a conversation on bravery, and recognizing fear as an important emotion, but also acknowledging the exhilaration that comes along with stretching yourself outside your comfort zone. And most particularly, and certainly, most importantly, how we can lay the foundation for raising our daughters, and other young girls in our lives, in such a way that helps them access their most brave and empowered selves. Topics such as risky play, scientific studies on gender on the playground, and setting world records for CRAWLING, are among some of the topics covered. Caroline is inspiring, motivating, thoughtful and gutsy- an episode that will certainly leave you with some lasting thoughts!Meet Caroline!I grew up in New England, with an identical twin, a younger brother, and a menagerie of animals. I did some goofy things as an adolescent: I learned all the constellations in the Western Hemisphere; I regularly rode my banana-seat bicycle for miles to read Archie comics at the nearest general store in our rural town; I built a boat out of milk cartons, then convinced others to join me on the river, then waded to shore with them when it broke up in the first rapid.I graduated from Stanford University, where I studied Communications. At the time I had a vague idea that perhaps I would become a documentary filmmaker. Instead, in 1989, I became a San Francisco firefighter. In 1999, I wrote about my thirteen-and-a-half year career in Fighting Fire, an updated version of which came out in 2011. I’d tell you about those years, but really, you should just read the book. I will only say that being in a fire made me happy, and doing emergency medical work intrigued me. All of it made me a better person. The most remote place I’ve been is Siberia, where I saw a Unidentified Flying Object that may or may not have been the Soviet military. The highest place I’ve been was on a mountain bike in the Bolivian Andes back when mountain bikes were scarce and 15,000 feet didn’t hurt as much as it would now. The most isolated I’ve ever felt was in a blizzard on Denali, where we had to stay in the tent and pee into a Gatorade bottle. My novel East Wind, Rain came out in 2006. In 2013, Lost Cat, A True Story of Love, Desperation and GPS Technology was published. It was named a Best Book by Jezebel and by the influential website Brainpickings. The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure published in 2016, is a rally cry for girl power. Part memoir, part how-to-outdoors guide, this book offers life lessons through adventure stories. It's Lean In for middle grade girls, set not in the workplace but on bicycles, tree branches, sea kayaks, and cliff edges. In 2018, You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World came out just as teens around the country were taking a stand against gun violence. This illustrated book aims for an even younger audience, teaching kids from 9 -to-12-years-old the tactics of civil engagement and protest. You Are Mighty believes it’s never too early to learn how to raise voices in a constructive, thoughtful way because activism teaches us about our democracy, and about ourselves, and sets a solid foundation for the informed and participatory citizenship every country sorely needs.Writing never happens in a vaccuum. Are you cautious and protective with your daughter? Or are you encouraging her to be a gutsy girl? Studies have shown that parents are likely either to warn their daughters away from challenging physical activities or to help them so much that they don’t accomplish the task on their own. With sons, however, parents are more likely to “be brave” and to guide them in how to complete the task on their own.   Caroline Paul believes we too often undermine girls’ competence and self-esteem and deprive them of exhilarating adventures. 100% Jodi: Finding Your Way Through "The Dip"

Women Taking the Lead with Jodi Flynn

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me. In last week’s 100% Jodi episode I talked about the book The Dip by Seth Godin. Godin describes The Dip as “the long slog between beginning and mastery.” I have to tell you after writing and recording that episode it was like psychologically I was in The Dip in every area of my life. Has that ever happened to you? I was catching up with a friend and talking about all the amazing opportunities that have been coming my way in my business. On paper just about everything is fantastic and I have many reasons to be grateful. And then I ended my update with “and I am so [insert expletive] bored with my life.” Daily the lyrics from Bruce Springstein’s song Dancing in the Dark kept running through my head and after meeting with my mastermind group at the end of last week I know exactly why and I’m going to get into that in just a bit. What I’ve been going through has gotten me thinking about the Tolerations Detox Challenge we did at the beginning of the year and I think it’s time to bring it back again but I’m going to do it a little bit differently. Instead of releasing the 5 challenges every other day, starting on Monday, May 7, I’m going to release one a week for 5 weeks. I heard all your feedback and it was tough to keep up with the challenges and I know many of you did not like falling behind. With each challenge coming out once a week it will be no problem for you to identify 2 things that you are tolerating or avoiding in the area selected for that week (think home and transportation, work and technology, health and wellness, etc.). Then you’ll have the whole week to address them before the next challenge comes out. If you are interested in joining in the Tolerations Detox Challenge for this round and getting back a whole bunch of energy before the summer begins sign up at womentakingthelead.com/tolerations to sign up! This week is the month-end episode so that means an update on goals but as promised in the last episode I’m going give the updates and comment on whether I’m crushing the goal, if I’m experiencing The Dip, or if I’m starting to wonder if something is a Dead End. To review, in The Dip you’re doing a lot of hard work and you may not be getting a lot of traction but there definitely is progress or you can see where your efforts are going to turn into progress. With a dead end things don’t get better or worse. They pretty much stay the same. Goal #1 Build more strength and endurance The original goal for strength and endurance was to do 300 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session by June 30 but I completed that in February. Crushed that goal and set a new goal. My burpee goal is now at 1000 burpees. Separately, I have a goal to do an unassisted pull-up before the end of this year. I have started incorporating pull-ups with the pull-up bands into my workouts during the week. I really shouldn’t say it’s incorporated into my workouts because the truth is I work from home so I do pull-ups whenever I think of it or feel like doing pull-ups which isn’t very often. I don’t dislike pull-ups and I’m starting to do them more often. It’s just a new activity being incorporated into my day so I’m sure this will pick up and become a daily thing this month. At first I could only do one or two assisted pull-ups with each attempt and now I’m up to four pull-ups with the band. As of the day I’m recording this episode I have completed doing 500 spartan-regulation burbees (chest to ground) in good form in one workout session and by the time this episode goes live I’ll have done 525 in one workout. The 500 burpee workout took me 1:43:49 to complete so I have to start planning my workout within larger time blocks. Yes, doing the workout is a slog but I wouldn’t say I’m suffering through it and I’m definitely making progress. With this goal I am in The Dip but I am leaning into it and enjoying the positive consequences of doing a workout that intense on a weekly basis. I’ve also increased the intensity of my separate strength-training and cardio workouts to support doing the burpee workouts with more ease. Goal #4 Do a Women Taking the Lead branded full-day event in the summer or fall In October, which is breast cancer awareness month, I will be collaborating with Emily leRoux, the Spartan Women Global Leader of Spartan Races, Inc. to do a “Burpees for Boobs” event. I am going to coordinate the event here in Maine but the intention is to have these events happening globally in October. As I reported in last month’s update there has not been a lot of extra time to make significant progress on this goal but I am continuing to share this goal with people who are ready to take action as soon as things are in place. I’ve got The Maine Women’s Conference coming up on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 in Portland, ME as well as some corporate workshops that need my attention but come June I’m going to be shifting my focus to this event. Side note: If you have not bought your tickets for The Maine Women’s Conference you can purchase your ticket at themainewomensconference.org. We have Caroline Paul and Maysoon Zayid as keynotes, there will be two panel discussions and I will be one of 12 breakout session speakers. I’ll be talking about one of my favorite topics: How to Grow and Leverage Your Network with Ease! Again, go to themainewomensconference.org to buy your ticket and I’ll look forward to seeing you there. I keep reminding myself each week as I do my burpee workout that the preparation to do 1000 burpees at the Burpees for Boobs event in October is the work I am doing to prepare for that event, for now. For this goal I have not made enough progress to hit The Dip or a dead end so I have no commentary here. Goal #3 Increase profitability in my business Goal: have a net income (earnings minus expenses) of $80,000 minimum this year. March’s Profit and Loss report showed a net profit of $2854.72. That is better than February’s profit of $493.82 but still far off from the average $6700/month required to see a net profit of $80,000. Some of my largest business bills come due in February and March and that is past now so I’m looking forward to seeing what the next few months bring. Am I experiencing a dead end in this area? No. This is what the slog looks like. I am making progress. The work I am doing is making an impact and I am getting more inquiries for training and coaching. It just takes time and consistent effort to get to the tipping point. I have been reviewing and tweaking the strategies I have for increasing the profits in my business that may not be getting the traction that I hoped for. I am continuing to offer the Energy Leadership Assessment, strategy sessions and private coaching. I also will be running a group program over the summer around transforming who you are in your career and business so you can start getting traction and hitting your goals with ease. I have also been spending more time talking about the corporate trainings during my BNI meeting and in the networking coffee dates I’ve been having. The word is getting out so now my job is to continue to spread the word and create a landing page for the corporate workshops I offer on my website. Goal # 5 Outsourcing Goal: (contingent upon profitability goal) to outsource social media content creation and email inbox management. If any of my goals feel like a dead end this is the one because it’s based on my profitability goals and I haven’t hit my target on that goal yet. Something I also didn’t plan for well was figuring into my profitability goal the fact that my business expenses would go up at first to pay for more virtual assistance as I brought in more money. I may start sharing my profit number with and without the expense of outsourcing to show more progress. Goal #2 Be in a committed monogamous relationship with a man In relationships I am not looking to be the best in the world but there are dips and dead ends in relationships that I am becoming more familiar with. I need to be open-minded and recognize when the work is to stay open-minded and compassionate, while at the same time be able to gauge when there is no chemistry. Or worse, when there is chemistry but the guy is not available, for whatever reason, so I’ll know when to cut my losses and move on. I have found myself getting a little tired of the process of finding a partner, at least on the dating app. In my exhaustion I have been questioning my goal in terms of do I need to be in a relationship or is dating casually good enough? Do I care if he’s seeing other people? Am I looking for a partner or am I okay with male attention from someone who at the very least considers my feelings. I had even considered casually dating someone whose life wasn’t suited to the time commitment of building a relationship. I wondered if I could see him occasionally while I continued my search for a partner. We just got along so well and had great chemistry that I didn’t want to move on. Who am I kidding? I still don’t want to move on. We had a lot of fun when we were together and I enjoyed the male attention. It is like sunshine on your skin. The reality is though all those things are okay to start with, I ultimately want a partner, and I know I would become emotionally involved if I continue to see him, and thus emotionally unavailable to other men. It’s the recipe for disaster. And it’s difficult to walk away from semi-good sunshine into a cold shadow once again.  That’s where the boredom started and why the song Dancing in the Dark kept popping into my head. When I broke down my feelings and my perspective with my mastermind group last week it was pointed out to me that almost all my time and successes were coming from masculine pursuits. I was spending hardly any time in feminine pursuits. For me this would look like singing, dancing, flirting, gardening, conversations that are not around business, politics or religion. Flirting and having romance in my life is important and it’s not something I’m capable of denying anymore. What I’ve also come to realize is, though there is a progression, I want someone to share my life with and I want to be a part of their life. And where I am in the process right now, being on the dating app, takes practicing patience. I say practicing because I’ve also come to realize I am not naturally a patient person; I have to work at it. It will also take having thick skin, not taking things personally, and consistently letting go of the past and being open to something new. It takes holding to my boundaries, being honest about what I’m looking for, keeping it light and fun, and not lowering my standards just because I’m temporarily feeling lonely. None of this is easy. It’s as Seth Godin says, “the long slog between beginning and mastery.” It’s The Dip and I am in it. However, as the cliché goes, I am in it to win it. Okay, that’s it for now. A few months ago I watched a TED Talk from today's guest, Caroline Paul. It was called "To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure" and, as a father of two daughters, to say it connected with me is not a strong enough sentiment. Her talk was not just something I watched thinking "huh...that was interesting", rather it made me fully self assess what I was doing as a parent, how we are unintentionally nurturing fear in our girls, and what strategies we can use to change fear into bravery. It's my favorite TED Talk EVER! Because let's be honest, we all want our daughters (and sons) to grow up to be courageous, happy, brave members of society who are confident in their decisions. We want them to experience life and all that it has to offer, to go out and embrace their own adventures, and use those adventures to develop self understanding and realize just what they are capable of. Caroline has embraced a "jack of all trades" attitude and has spent her time throwing herself into all sorts of experiences. Just to mention a few adventures: she had an entire career as a San Francisco firefighter, was on the national Luge team (think sledding down an ice tunnel at speeds over 50mph), guided whitewater rafting, flew paragliders, and now flies experimental airplanes. In this conversation Caroline shares stories from her life of epic adventure, discusses what we can do as parents to raise brave daughters, and how to encourage "risky play", amongst much more. Caroline's book "Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure" is a book that empowers all girls to have adventures, face adversity and be brave. In fact, I would honestly encourage everyone to check it out. So if you're reading this and you have daughters or nieces, this is something I would highly recommend gifting. As I prepare my 7th grade classroom for the upcoming school year I'm envisioning an "Adventure Book Shelf" where kids can check out various books that help encourage positivity and multiple copies of "Gutsy Girl" will definitely be available to each and every one of my students. I honestly think Caroline's mission of empowerment and advice is one of the more important messages we have had the opportunity to share, so I hope you enjoy today's episode and receive as many takeaways as I did. Humongous thanks to Caroline for chatting with me! You are definitely beyond inspiring and I wish you nothing but luck in the future! Thanks for listening! Then as I googled her, I became super interested in the book she recently released called The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure, a New York Times Best Seller. We were already on the search for more books to get our daughter that focused on having a female heroine, instead of female princesses or girls thinking about boy crushes. Despite the title, this book is not just for girls. Caroline Paul uses her own adventures to encourage boys and girls who read this to step outside their comfort zone.

Caroline Paul (@carowriter) is a blast and can also probably kick my ass... seriously. Caroline is the author of four published books. Her latest is the New York Times best seller The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure. Once a young scaredy-cat, Caroline decided that fear got in the way of the life she wanted--of excitement, confidence, and self-reliance. She has since flown planes, rafted big rivers, climbed tall mountains, and fought fires as one of the first female firefighters in San Francisco. In this episode, we discuss various types of fear and how to overcome them, using stories, habits, and tactics. Enjoy! This podcast is brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple. It has exploded in popularity in the last two years and now has more than $2.5B under management. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it’s all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams. Check out wealthfront.com/tim, take their risk assessment quiz, which only takes 2-5 minutes, and they’ll show you—for free–exactly the portfolio they’d put you in. If you want to just take their advice and do it yourself, you can. Well worth a few minutes to explore: wealthfront.com/tim. This podcast is also brought to you by Audible.
