Aaron Corcoran aka Skinner released his debut album New Wave Vaudeville on January 7. He talks about playing open mic nights when he was in his mid-teens, his DIY ethos, his creative process and influences, and discusses making some of the tracks on the album. Buy New Wave Vaudeville: https://skinner97.bandcamp.com/album/new-wave-vaudeville ---- Press release: Skinner is the project of the Dublin-based multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer Aaron Corcoran who was inspired by the New York No wave scene in the late '70s/early '80s for this debut record. The record's lead track "Calling In Sick" perfectly exemplifies this influence as he takes cues from the genre, while also carving his own path on the scene as well. Speaking about "Calling In Sick", he said, "The song is about calling in sick to the world. Life is tough for most people right now and there is no down time for most of us. Some days just feel like you're hurtling towards destruction and I just wanted to write a song that captures that feeling of anger and frustration of having to say enough is enough. Fuck everything I'm just going to do me for today. And I think that's fair." 'New Wave Vaudeville', the song and album title, references the New Wave Vaudeville music variety freak show that took place at the 57 Club in New York from 1978 to 1983. The club was known for its free-form art shows, a debaucherous wild riposte to creeping commerciality of modern culture of the time. "The ethos of the album is to celebrate the weird part of who you are and be proud of it," says Aaron. "You might feel strange in society but you don't when you're listening to your favourite music, and this record is a space for the outsiders to feel comfortable." Skinner's debut album takes inspiration from the outsiders in alternative music who populate the greatest hits of no wave, dance-punk, Latin disco and post-punk genres - Liquid Liquid, A Certain Ratio, Kid Creole And The Coconuts and James Chance And The Contortions to name a few. "I like the idea of mixing genres that shouldn't go together," Aaron adds. "That's probably why I like no wave music. It's just total and utter free expression of music without any constraint or rules. And it's not constrained by any societal ideals like a lot of other music can be. It's pure raw human emotion and expression." Throughout the LP, Corcoran makes use of vocal training by Dara Kiely of Dublin noise-rock Gilla Band, who taught Aaron how to scream effectively while singing without losing your voice, as heard on the tracks "Calling In Sick", "Tell My Ma" and "When You Live In A Shoe". Percussion also plays a big part in the record, with Latin American music and disco cited as an influence on the 10 tracks on the LP. New Wave Vaudeville was recorded and produced by Aaron Corcoran at the Meadow and engineered alongside Rian Trench. The album was mixed by Sean Corcoran, and mastered by Tj Lipple.

Charlie's Beach Club and Poolside Lounge opens its 2023 season live on The Face Radio. Although the afternoon starts off with the typical California fog, the hot new jams burn that off by the end of this episode which carries fresh releases by Sven Wunder, DJ Pippi & Willie Graff, A Certain Ratio, Toribio, and more. Expect extended versions of new cuts by Tigerbalm, Dimitri From Paris, Something Sanctified, and Chas Jankel with beats that are furious and non stop, pushing past 10 minutes or greater in length. It's a party, but with the long songs, the overall track list for this resort opening episode is shorter than normal. Hailing from Mancester England, and just as much of the "Manchester Movement" as all the big names at the same time, A Certain Ratio formed in the late 70s. A Certain Ratio has undergone several changes in membership and each album has delivered a new sound, but they are still the great "Jazz/Funk/Punk/New Wave" act who lived on Factory Records with so many other greats. This new Album 1982 is an outstanding "Slice of the Zeitgeist" of the year 1982, but still sounding as current as their motto "Keep Moving Forward". An almost underground band, I got into them when they were tying up their tour with New Order in 1986. Jez Kerr began as the bassist, and moved into vocals in a personel change, and has crafted the sound of a great art rock collective for 40 years now. He recently came out as bisexual, and we discussed his reasons for why he told the world now. There is so much written about his music but very little written about him, so this conversation was a great opportunity for me. facebook youtube website#jezkerr #lgbtqartists #bisexualartists #brandnewheavies #gracejones #chrisblackwell #talkingheads #loureed #certairatio #muterecords #robgretton #neworder #peterhook #rowetta #factoryrecords #manchester #shriekback #thesmiths #morrissey #muterecords

Album Spotlight - Swing Out Sister "It's Better To Travel" (Mercury 1987)

This month for the album spotlight Danny takes us to the year 1987 for the brilliant debut album "It's Better To Travel" by the Manchester England band Swing Out Sister.Although Swing Out Sister are currently a duo, they began as a trio in the UK. The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums); they were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals). According to the group's website, "They christened themselves after an obscure Billie Burke "B"-musical from the '40s [a 1945 movie starring Arthur Treacher, called Swing Out, Sister] because it was the only name they could agree upon - they all agreed they hated it." Both Connell and Jackson had been playing in other bands prior to forming SOS, while Drewery was a fashion designer and model before she became the band's lead vocalist. 52nd Street's Diane Charlemagne was influential in the period just prior to the band signing to Phonogram Records. Connell and Jackson, outside of their usual roles as Manchester musicians in A Certain Ratio and Magazine, were producing Electro tracks for Morgan Khan's Streetwise label with a degree of underground success. This activity triggered interest from a few major labels including Phonogram/Mercury Records. Vocalised songs were asked for, so Connell, who knew Charlemagne through Factory Records, approached her to sing on the Phonogram demos. These demos helped secure Connell and Jackson's major label contract. This was the period in which 52nd Street moved from Factory Records to Virgin Records and as a result, Diane Charlemagne's Swing Out Sister involvement ended. Beginnings and debut album: It's Better to Travel (1985–1987)Together with their producer, Paul Staveley O'Duffy, they signed with Mercury Records. Before their first album, they released the single "Blue Mood" in the UK in November 1985. However, it did not chart. In late 1986, the single "Breakout" was released. It reached the number four position on the UK Singles Chart in November 1986, and number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in November 1987. When they released their debut album, It's Better to Travel, on 11 May 1987, it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album blended real horns, synths (arranged subtly, to sound like strings), drums, and xylophones, scored by producer/arranger Richard Niles. The follow-up single to "Breakout" was "Surrender", which featured a trumpet solo performed by John Thirkell. It rose to number seven on the UK charts in January 1987. The next single was the more serious and jazzy "Twilight World". This song was the subject of many remixes and was a dance club favourite worldwide. The final single, "Fooled By a Smile", returned to the upbeat pop orientation characteristic of "Breakout".The group were subsequently nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1988: Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo ("Breakout").In addition to long-time partner O'Duffy as well as Thirkell, Swing Out Sister have also enlisted the talents of saxophonist Gary Barnacle (who with Thirkell also comprise the Phantom Horns known for their work with Level 42); percussionist Luis Jardim; guitarist Tim Cansfield; trumpet/fluegelhorn master Jerry Hey; and songwriter-arranger Jimmy Webb.Complete Setlist- 3/7/23BreakoutTwilight WorldAfter HoursBlue MoodSurrenderFooled By A SmileCommunionIt's Not EnoughIt's Better To TravelRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on March 7th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess
