Today's poem opens a week of poetry about food. Happy eating reading.Bill Holm was born in 1943 on a farm outside Minneota, Minnesota. He received a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1965 and an MA from the University of Kansas in 1967. Holm was the author of several poetry collections, including Playing the Black Piano and The Dead Get By with Everything. His collection The Chain Letter of the Soul: New and Selected Poems was published posthumously in 2009. He also wrote several essay collections, including The Windows of Brimnes: An American in Iceland. A professor emeritus at Southwest Minnesota State until his retirement in 2008, Holm was known for his connection to Minnesota. In an article for the Minn Post, Nick Hayes describes him as “the quintessential voice of our small towns and prairies.” He goes on to note that Holm “was also our lost Icelander in Minnesota.” The grandchild of Icelandic immigrants, Holm spent most of his summers at his cottage in Hofsos, Iceland, and his writing was influenced both by the heritage and landscape of both of his homes. In 2008, Holm received the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. He died on February 26, 2009, in South Dakota.-bio via Milkweed Editions Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

From playing professional basketball in Germany… to deciding to change his career path entirely and pursue his dream of making movies… to landing in Los Angeles without a back-up plan or a safety net… to self-learning all aspects of the filmmaking process… to carving out his own path in the indie world as he prolifically pivoted from film to film and genre to genre… to making of his latest feature FEAR at the height of the pandemic and the crazy hurdles that the early COVID testing process placed on his production's schedule… Deon is a terrific example of a filmmaker who never waited for permission to make his dreams come true. The boys also discuss the horror movies that scared them as kids, hold an impromptu Tony Todd appreciation session, and Deon shares his first experience seeing HATCHET in this tremendously inspiring conversation that will hopefully get you to stop waiting and just go for it!

Your Humble Host welcomes you to enjoy a classic Jean Shepherd story today that he recorded on January 17, 1975. It's all about when Jean Shepherd's mother had the Dish Rag Chain Letter madness! She wanted those dish rags even if the "Old Man" thought she was nuts. Shep was a kid and he was stuck in the middle of that pile of dish rags too. Listen today to a funny story Shep even told on TV in a PBS special from 1982 called "The Great American Fourth of July & Other Disasters". This tape comes from Your Humble Host's personal Library of Sound recordings Volume 126.

They have a show Feb 19th in Richmond at The Lakeside Tavern if you want to check them out. Thanks for listening and supporting local shows. Links below. Let me just say that I am one to actually have fun watching bad horror films... Lord knows that I've had my fair share of experiences with B-movies that are both great and terrible. That being said, I was very hesitant to check this out. But if I can make it through bad movies like the Day Of The Dead remake (both of them), Chain Letter and Doom, I figured I could handle Horny The Clown dispatching of some stoner teens who can't stay out of his way. Enjoy, y'all.

The boys are indoctrinated into a mysterious chain of secrets, lies, and treachery after accidentally reading a cryptic letter from someone (or something) named "Robin." The more they investigate this "Book of Secrets" (which contains confessions of lurid crimes by Jessi, Mallory, Stacey, Kristy, Claudia, Dawn, and Mary Anne), the more they are rebuffed, first by agents of Scholastic, then by someone who is far, far closer to them. As the net of the Baby-Sitters Club Chain Letter closes around them, they understand—too late—the meaning of the four words that started it all: Secrets. Will. Always. Kill. Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Bye Bye Empire for the outro music.

As we are probably one of the most popular producers of online content, we feel it is our responsibility to celebrate the anniversary of David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin's classic THE SOCIAL NETWORK. However this was not the only film on the end of anonymity released on October 1, 2010... for our forgotten film on this episode is THE Nasty Hellcat selected slasher flick CHAIN LETTER. One film should have won Best Picture and the other is the usual vengeance tour from one of our co-hosts and "friends" to force us to waste precious minutes of our lives. Maybe you've received an email with this subject. It tells the story of how parents of a 15-year old boy find $71,000 cash hidden in his closet. When his mother was cleaning and putting laundry away, she came across a large brown paper bag that was suspiciously buried beneath some clothes and a skateboard in the back of her 15-year-old son’s closet. She opened the bag and found it was full of cash -- five dollar bills, twenties, fifties, and hundreds – all neatly rubber-banded in labeled piles. Was the kid dealing drugs? Running a numbers game? Pimping girls? No. She didn't think that. "My first thought was that he had robbed a bank," said the 41-year-old woman. “There was over $71,000 dollars in that bag. That’s more than my husband earns in a year!" The woman immediately called her husband at the car dealership where he worked to tell him what she’d discovered. He came home right away and they drove together to the boy’s school to pick him up. As it turns out, the boy had been sending out a "chain-letter" to email addresses he'd found online. He'd done it right from the computer in his bedroom. It sounds like a great story... Unfortunately, it's not true. But chain letters are real and, in this episode of RED Podcast, I discuss my experience with them as well as how you can apply their appeal to your business. In This Episode: National Enquirer and other tabloid newspapers... It's not a felony to sell the plans (only to put it together and possess it) How to know if your ads are working (or not working) My letter from the Postal Inspector 5th-grade kid with a bunch of classified ads The best direct marketing education you'll get (and it's free) How even legitimate magazines are selling "work-from-home" and "make money" opportunities Why you should sell a "make money" opportunity even if your business has nothing to do with helping people make money What people are always looking for (and how to make sure you have it available for them) Why Trump won -- it's the same reason he'll lose the next time around Imagine yourself on a date... The "something for nothing" marketing strategy that's making a killing on Facebook This business never fails -- it always makes money How to get repeat buyers A way to start bringing in recurring money today The pros and cons of running an "anonymous" business "Money-Maker" vs Business Is Google controlling your business? In 2005, fans and critics alike were enthralled by music sensation Brooke Valentine. It was her dynamic single, “Girlfight,” featuring Lil Jon and Big Boi, taken from her debut full-length project, Chain Letter (Virgin Records), that helped propel album sales to 300,000 copies worldwide. Now, she is back —with a new focus, a higher sense of purpose, and most of all, exciting new music! Brooke Valentine is ecstatic about the release of her long-awaited album Forever (Subliminal Ent/Universal) and its upbeat title track single, called "Forever"—her first collection of all-new material in four years. The album is a celebration of life, family, and Valentine’s new-found freedom. She does not completely shed her sexy and fun-girl image, but the tragic loss of a family member, a complicated pregnancy, raising a special needs son, and a long battle to be released from Virgin Records certainly have affected her perspective. “A lot of fans have been asking where I have been,” she says, referring to her extended hiatus from the music business. “You know, I’ve been singing since I was 12 years-old; so by the time songs like ‘Girlfight’ and the Chain Letter album hit, I’d been doing this for quite a while. In this world, you just can’t have all career and no balance. I gave birth to my son London, who I love and adore. He requires a bit more attention than what the average parent has to give to a child. I’d been fighting to be released from the deal with Virgin Records. I was no longer in love with the industry and with the politics that go with it. I needed a break. I needed to live life. But I want my fans to know, though, that I never fell out of love with mus
