Dr. Christian Conte is one of America's most accomplished mental health specialists in the field of anger and emotional management. In this episode, he shares the deeper principles behind Yield Theory - a powerful model of change that integrates radical compassion, conscious education, and Eastern philosophical insights such as non-attachment. With over twenty-five years of clinical experience, including extensive work with violent offenders, Dr. Conte brings grounded clarity to some of the most challenging emotional landscapes. Central to his approach is the idea that anger often arises not from what's happening, but from the clash between our expectations and reality. He introduces the concept of the “cartoon world” - a mental projection of how we think others should behave - and how its collapse gives rise to frustration and rage. By recognizing these inner dynamics, we gain the ability to respond thoughtfully, rather than reactively. Dr. Conte shares practical, accessible tools for real-time emotional regulation. His “maybe” technique invites uncertainty into rigid thinking, helping to calm the limbic system by engaging the frontal cortex. His “sans adjectives” method shows how stripping emotionally charged language from our descriptions can reduce escalation and bring clarity. We also explore the interplay between the body and mind in shaping emotional states, the differences between types of anger - from hot anger to seething resentment - and the necessity of humility and present-moment awareness in therapeutic work. He reflects on his personal journey into this field, what it has taught him about human behavior, and why meeting people exactly where they are is essential for real connection and change. This conversation offers both practical insights and a deeper invitation: to meet ourselves and others with presence, precision, and radical compassion.Author of numerous books including Walking Through Anger, Dr. Conte is the creator of Yield Theory. His books are used by institutions around the world to train counselors. He currently trains correctional institutions, sports teams, and organizations in the practical application of his Yield Theory Anger Management Program. He was a tenured professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, before he left the West Coast to return to his home state of Pennsylvania where he currently lives with his wife and daughter.youtube.com/drchristiancontedrchristianconte.comLiked what you heard? How do we fully meet and support someone experiencing emotional distress—anger, in particular? In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon talks with Dr. Christian Conte about his Yield Theory of emotional management, focusing on the process of “listen, validate, and explore options.” Dr. Conte explains the events that led to his interest in anger management, as well as the origins of Yield Theory. He emphasizes the importance of meeting others where they are, giving them the opportunity to drain anger's charge from their limbic system. Dr. Conte and Tami discuss why it's necessary to cultivate humility and how Yield Theory might be applied to our currently divisive culture. Finally, they speak on the “cartoon world” that angry responses often create, as well as the importance of watching what we add to our minds.
Hour Four - Dr. Conte tells us how to prepare and react to dangerous situations.
I love all things emotions but it wasn't always that way. I used to be so cut off from feeling my feelings and anger was especially hard for me access. I deemed it wrong, hurtful, extreme and ugly. Today, I love anger because I understand that this powerful emotion is simply feedback. It is information that I can use and work through to process pain, shame, or a boundary violation. Emotions can feel so uncomfortable because of how they modeled for us or because we simply don't know how to sit with the discomfort of our emotions. These simply aren't things we are taught as children. Our guest today, Dr. Christian Conte, is one of the world's leading experts on emotions and anger management. Dr. Conte has worked with some of the world's most violent criminals, MMA fighters as well as top athletes and some of the toughest people in maximum security prisons to help them integrate their emotions, specifically their anger. In this episode Dr. Conte walks us through a bit of his work called "Yield Theory" and helps us learn how to manage our emotions (as well as explaining what it even means to manage your emotions). LISTEN TO LEARN: The skill one must master in order to really build amazing relationships with others. How to begin moving away from judgment and become more accepting of others. How to manage your emotions. The number one tool you can use today to start de-escalating YOURSELf and others. The two key pieces you need to implement when it comes to listening What empathy actually is and why it matters so much in our relationships. How to begin feeling our anger if we are terrified of it. What to do if you are really stuck in an emotion. Anger can be healthy or unhealthy. We all feel it, we all experience it. But one thing is certain-we cannot simply allow it to run rampant in our lives and it is dangerous to suppress it on the other extreme. So how do we work with our anger? Listen to this episode with Dr. Conte to find out. “There are two kinds of people in the world. People with issues and dead people.” Dr. Christian Conte “I saw a need for people to master their emotions.” Dr. Christian Conte “Knowing a concept doesn't mean you're working on a concept.” Dr. Christian Conte “People see your actions, NOT your intentions.” Christian Conte “We minimize the pain we cause others and we amplify the pain they cause us.” Dr. Christian Conte “Be accurate in your language.” Dr. Christian Conte “At some point you have to sit in the discomfort and understand that others are stuck in their own stuff and it doesn't have to mean anything about you. “ Krista Resnick LINKS & RESOURCES Dr. Christian Conte - YOUTUBE | WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | BOOK Krista Resnick -WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK | FACEBOOK COMMUNITY

And then I remember him talking about Descartes. And I said, well, what happened all those years in between there? And I just remember that gap. And I thought, well, listen, there's not going to be a gap when I'm done”. “But every emotion will have a beginning, a middle and end. So, no matter how angry you've ever been, eventually it's passed, no matter how sad, happy, whatever, it will pass”. “If someone's doing something that's not mindful, look, they're in the labyrinth. And when you look at somebody and you realize that you can have compassion, and unbelief, feel sorry for them but recognize the reality that they're not seeing things in the same way that you're seeing things”. “So, yield theory is an approach to communication that centers on meeting people where they are genuinely meeting people where they are getting around their fight or flight response, you know, that defensiveness and speak in ways that can actually be heard”. “It's one of the reasons why I say that even in a prison if with somebody who's convicted to a life sentence, that's never getting out of prison, I would still give them everything in terms of helping them find a path to peace because they carry energy, they carry impact, and they can impact the entire system”. “If you fill your mind with violent music, violent video games, violent movies, and you're gonna have violence in your mind, whatever you put in your mind is going to be in your mind. And each and every person there, they got it in that”. Resources: Dr. Christian Conte's Website Dr. Christian Conte's Facebook Dr. Christian Conte's Twitter Connect with Ben!
