There seems to be an innate desire in the human heart to hear—and to tell—good stories. It seems to be the way we are wired. Stories entertain us. They communicate ideas. They are powerful. They shape our identity. And we are hardwired to appreciate and retell them. The Christian view is that our love of stories has been given to us by our Creator. It was God who has designed us to value stories. And there is a way of using stories to capture the imagination of people, in order to share, and even defend the Chrstian worldview. In this episode, we're going to talk first about this method, called imaginative apologetics, and then we're going to do a deep dive on how you can use really great stories to help your kids understand the biblical view of the world. We are going to answer the question, “How can stories help you defend your Christian faith, and pass it on to the younger generation?” Today you're going to hear from Michael Jahosky. This is Mike's third time on the show. He is a Tolkein scholar and writes on those great authors, JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis. And he is going to help us understand the importance of capturing the imagination of our listeners, as we're defending our Christian faith… and how to do the same thing when we're seeking to teach our children the Christian worldview… through excellent stories. Dan Shoemake What does it mean to be Charismatic/Pentecostal?Charismatic Christians emphasize the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the use of Spiritual Gifts and miracles as a normative expression of the truth of the Gospels. Furthermore charismatics affirm and exercise the working of miracles and spiritual gifts in the current Church as a regular demonstration of the Chrstian life. The distinctive beliefs of Charismatics and Pentecostals are:Miracles and signs of God's supernatural intervention are currently occurring in the Church today.The active operation of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.An event subsequent to salvation called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, in which the Spirit empowers the Christian for the work of the Church.DEFINITIONSFirst: When using the word charismatic in this context - I am not referring to people with strong personalities. Charismatic - Greek word - Charis (Favor or Gift)Refers to the gifts of the Holy Spirit described in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 & 14. So Charismatic Christians are those who operate under the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will talk further about what exactly those are in our next episode when we break down the scriptural merit for the Charismatic movement. Pentecostalism - Greek Pente-coste (50th) = Festival of Weeks - in Hebrew, Shavuot  (Deuteronomy 16:10 & Exodus 34:22) which occurs 50 days after the Festival of Passover.This particular label refers to the event in Acts chapter 2, when the disciples were gathered together in the upper room 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus and tongues of fire fell upon each of them, and they began to speak in tongues. Baptism in the Holy Spirit -  Refers to a phrase spoken by John the Baptist (Matt 3:11, & Lk 3:16) and the risen Christ in Acts 1:5 “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” This refers to an event where a Christian is empowered with the Holy Spirit - the distinctive Pentecostal belief is that the initial physical evidence of this indwelling is speaking in tongues - much like the events in Acts 2:3. 10:46, 19:6.Distinction between Charismatic and PentecostalI'll be using the terms interchangeably.The movement that began the global revival in the 20th century is commonly called Pentecostalism. Later revivalist movements have identified themselves using the distinction “Charismatic.” In a broad sense the difference between these two movements is about some disagreements about the concept of Baptism in the Holy Spirit.The Beginnings of Modern PentecostalismAlthough there have been various examples of charismatic and mystics like Hildegard of Bingen, St. Theresa of Avila, and others, the modern conception of tongues has its historical roots in Azuza, California. A one eyed black preacher man named William Seymour began a small mission that became the catalyst for the movement. This led to a transformation in protestant and Catholic experiences of the Holy Spirit. The Prevalence of the Pentecostal MovementThe Pentecostal and Charismatic movement has completely overtaken the globe. Today it is most prevalent within the charismatic Catholic movement - but has also had an effect on evangelical, and mainline protestant movements. The historic black Church has also widely practiced charismatic worship.

PODCAST #9: JEWS AND CHRISTIANS IN THE QUR'AN by Martin Bidney The Be-loving Imaginer, seeking to be the scripture he sings, is delighted to discover ways that a love for already be-loved scriptures can be startlingly expanded. The Qur'an is chiefly a storybook, where you encounter participants in the stories of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. The Qur'an shows you these people in new episodes and adventures. I'll focus on the new perspectives I love the most. I'll be using as sourcebooks my A Unifying Light and East-West Poetry. Poem 1 UL shows an inclusive attitude: God offers three religions co-equally. Adam and Eve (poems 6, 7 UL) are co-equal in their eating of the forbidden fruit (wheat seed?) and are soon forgiven. But one offense remains (poem 5 UL); Adam is a failure at stewardship. Abraham is not only founder of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; for the Qur'an he pardons his father for trying to burn him alive (see Qur'an intro, poem 95 E-W P) and becomes a martyr hero who teaches forgiveness (poem 75 UL). Joseph has no coat of many colors but acquires a miracle shirt. When the official's wife at Pharaoh's court tries to tempt him, she rips the back of his shirt, which turns into a miracle cure for the blindness of his grieving father Jacob. She accuses Joseph of the misdeed and he's sent to jail (poem 44 UL, no intro). When the court ladies call her to account, she introduces Joseph, and in a comic scene they're overcome by his beauty (intro to poem 42 UL). Moses' cordial welcome by Pharaoh's wife may have engendered the love that later drew her to convert to the Jewish God and to condemn Pharaoh (poem 79 UL). Pharaoh's wife Asiya is a wonderful new character in the Qur'anic story of Moses. King Solomon – a bad steward? I raise the question, as the Qur'an does (poem 87 UL). Virgin Mary receives miraculous nourishment to soothe her horrendous labor pains (poem 93 E-W P). According to Sufi poet Rumi, we are each a Mary who must bear a Jesus. The Qur'anic Jesus offers a sermon while still in cradle (2nd half of intro plus poem 30 E-W P). He models a clay bird and it flies (poem 27 UL). This latter story is told in a Chrstian gospel, as the idol-smashing narrative occurs in a Jewish Midrash. But Torah, Gospel, and Qur'an are all Divinely created, as shown way back in Poem 1 UL.

She moved to America to study producing, directing and screenwriting at UCLA where she graduated in 2008. After writing, co-producing and directing her first feature film THE QUIET HOUR, Stéphanie is now developing her next projects as a writer/director: THE SEEDLING and ICE. Stéphanie is an alumna of Berlinale Talents and IFP Emerging Narrative in New York.   Sean McConville began his career as a Special Effects technician on big budget studio films, including STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE, MORTAL KOMBAT, and James Bond movies GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES. Sean has a Master of Arts Degree in Screenwriting from the London College of Communications. After graduating LCC Sean moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA, and graduated in 2004.
