Send us a textBen Akers never expected to become a Mental Health advocate. But when his childhood best friend Steve died by suicide 10 ago, everything changed. Confronted with the staggering reality that suicide is the biggest killer of men, Akers channeled his grief and advertising background into creating 'Talk Club' – a revolutionary approach to men's mental fitness that's now saving lives across the UK and beyond. At the heart of Talk Club's genius is stunning simplicity: "How are you? Out of 10?" This numerical scale gives men a framework to express their emotional state without struggling with what Akers calls "the foreign language of feelings." Where men typically respond with a reflexive "I'm fine," the number system creates an opening for honesty. "If you're a higher number and regularly a higher number," Akers explains, "you're mentally fit, you're mentally strong, and you're good for everyone around you."From its first meeting at Bristol Beer Factory in April 2019, Talk Club has expanded to 120+ venues nationwide with over 5,000 members. The organization has formed strategic partnerships, including creating Clearhead non-alcoholic beer, allowing men to gather in comfortable spaces without alcohol's potential mental health impacts. Every aspect of Talk Club reflects Akers' design philosophy: make it accessible, remove barriers, and speak directly to men as they are.The movement reframes mental health conversations through the lens of fitness rather than illness. Just as we congratulate someone for going to the gym, Akers wants mental health maintenance celebrated rather than questioned. He applies his personal philosophy – "Does it make you better?" – to every decision, encouraging men to evaluate relationships, work, and habits through this simple yet profound lens. Whether you're struggling personally, concerned about someone in your life, or simply interested in supporting mental fitness, visit talkclub.org today. As Akers proves through his work, sometimes the smallest questions can save the biggest lives.Find out more at talkclub.org or email hello@talkclub.org to get involved, donate, or start your own Talk Club.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Bosses are finding Gen Z to be something of a nightmare. They've found that they have poor work ethic, miss meetings, and even ditch the company on their first day of work. In contrast, Gen Z workers say their employers don't understand them. Angela Lim, Clearhead CEO, told Mike Hosking that there's been a distinct cultural shift, boundaries blurring between personal and work lives. Another shift, she said, is in values. Lim said that young people want their employers to make a stand on social issues, to have more meaning or purpose in their jobs as opposed to just collecting a paycheck. This can cause a lot of friction, she told Hosking, unless both parties are trained in having difficult conversations and know how to incorporate those different work styles. Angela Lim is a doctor and tech entrepreneur who founded the mental health and wellbeing platform Clearhead five years ago. In the past year, it has supported 180,000 New Zealanders, through some of the country's biggest workplaces. These are in-person and on-line therapy sessions with qualified clinicians around the country. Clearhead boasts a two to three day wait time for a session, and offers therapy times outside of normal working hours, to suit the client. Dr Lim says Clearhead has never been funded by Te Whatu Ora, nor has it shown any interest. She says it's frustrating to see how little has changed in the publicly funded mental health sector. RNZ news is reporting today that most of the staff recruited to the 664-million-dollar scheme putting mental health advisers into GP clinics and other primary care settings have come from within the mental health sector, creating gaps in other areas. Clearhead has just released statistics from the past year - showing what the key concerns of its users are. Not surprisingly perhaps, anxiety is number one.

Whether it is imposter syndrome or self-sabotage that is preventing us from unlocking our true potential, there are simple steps we can take to overcome our brain's inherent bias and limitations in the face of failure. There is never a good reason for bullying and sexual harassment to exist in the workplace. Due to fear of repercussions towards the victims, these cases are rarely reported with only 1 in 4 cases estimated to be reported. Shockingly, the perpetrators of these negative behaviours often don't realise they are at fault and the bystander effect means that their behaviour never gets challenged. Additionally, minorities in the workplace tend to be disproportionately affected by this. The first step to creating a psychologically safe workplace for everyone is to understand why and how these negative interpersonal behaviours at work occur and foster new understandings of how to deal with bullying in the workplace. Ivana's biography: Ivana Vranjes is an Assistant professor in Work and Organisational Psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. She obtained her PhD in workplace cyberbullying in Belgium for which she collaborated with several private and public companies to collect data and develop an understanding of why people misbehave online. With further research projects completed in Canada and Finland on inappropriate workplace behaviors, such as aggression, bullying and sexual harassment. Her current focus is looking at how people who engage in mistreatment at work reflect on their own behaviour, in order to break the negative spirals of mistreatment at work. She also brings to the table valuable insights on how technology is shaping the way we work, and the impact it has on the way we are communicating with each other. In this episode, we dive deep into answering the following thorny questions: 2:50 - How did Ivana get first become interested in the topic of cyber bullying? 4:00 - How does technology affect people's wellbeing and way of work? 5:20 - How flexibility allows for the best balance of hybrid work. 7:30 - How does cyberbullying at work manifest? 10:00 - What is the psychology behind the perpetrators of bullying at work? 12:40 - What is the impact on people who have been bullied? 14:35 - What are the signs that someone is being bullied? 17:10 - How do people successfully stop bullying from happening? 21:53 - What is 'The Bystander Effect' and how does it perpetuate bullying? 24:17 - Is Bystander Training to stop bullying the same as Conflict Management Training? 28:00 - What are the work environments where bullying is more likely to occur? 29:45 - What are preventative measures the organisation can take to prevent bullying at work? 31:10 - How annual performance reviews can be used to monitor bullying. 33:50 - In what circumstances does sexual harassment usually occur? 36:50 - What are the mechanisms in place that allow the victim to stand up against the bully, when the bully is in a more powerful position? 42:22 - How does the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial make people think that most sexual harassment claims are false? 47:30 - How can we confront men's fear of supporting women at work and the fear of untrue harassment claims? 52:50 - How people can navigate the shifting lines of what behaviour is considered discrimination? 56:00 - What are successful strategies to reduce harassment or bullying at work? 57:50 - What is Ivana's one wellbeing practice?Learn more about Ivana: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ivana-vranjes-4554506b/Learn more about Clearhead: https://www.myclearhead.com/

My guest for this episode is Dr Angela Lim, serial health tech entrepreneur focused on innovative solutions, who has previously worked as a Paediatric doctor at Auckland Hospital and now runs Clearhead, NZ's most innovative workplace wellbeing provider for EAP services and more. Angela has a wide range of experiences and networks in both the NZ and international health care systems. This includes sitting on several local and national boards, especially in the area of healthcare information technology, conducting multiple health-related research projects spanning from a biomedical to population health level, and working for the Ministry of Health. This has allowed Angela to help shape and develop a more integrated and consumer-centric health care system, to take a whole-of-system approach when answering big and strategic questions. Her key areas of interest are in population health, inequality, healthcare governance, leadership, cross-sectoral integration, innovation and entrepreneurship. She has been featured in various articles, reports and presentations including the NZ Herald, Stuff, TV and as a TEDx speaker. I reached out to Angela to be a guest here because mental health is so important in the workplace or when looking for a role, and also because I was personally so inspired by her awesomeness. In this episode we cover: How becoming a boss has shifted Angela's meaning of recruitment and career Why you are only successful as the sum of your people and how businesses can support each individual The importance of technology in supporting mental health Acknowledging there is still stigma and real life consequences around mental health challenges The lessons you should take from any failure and remembering why you are grinding That women in leadership bring a level of empathy allowing people to bring their whole human self to work Remember that at all levels it's ok to make mistakes, share them, learn, and support each other, showing this vulnerability and giving this permission makes you all stronger Why it's important to let go of control, especially as a woman The importance of filling your cup regularly so you have reserves to support life and work challenges For any comments, questions or inquiries about how I can help you as a business or candidate, drop me an email rosey@customisetalent.com or send me a voice memo https://anchor.fm/roseyonrecruitment/message --- Connect with Angela on LinkedIn http://nz.linkedin.com/in/angelalim1 Clearhead http://www.clearhead.org.nz/ Clearhead LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/clear-head/ Clearhead IG https://www.instagram.com/clearheadnz/ Clearhead FB https://www.facebook.com/clearhead.nz Small Steps Mental Health support https://www.smallsteps.org.nz/ YouTube full interview https://bit.ly/rrc43dralyt --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/roseyonrecruitment/message

Solo Grain, Sweat of souls striving under sunlight, Every grain carried it's spirit when got hit by gusts, Survived after life threatened by deluges, Beated the dudgeon of Sunrays.. A kiddo paddy, "What is the cause of undergoing all this catastrophe?" Asked his siblings, Questioned his Mumma, "We are beholden by an obligation. Our greatest aspiration is to fill the tummy which is Dying of hunger" Got answer... Young grain begged to God to fulfill his creed of existence, Such a fortunated paddy, Passed all barriers like Threshing, winnowing and milling... At prime meridian, Now in the dish of a fat lady, Paddy had a phenomenal joy, At the moment to be eaten up, Paddy spilled dowm... Irresponsible lady didn't care, Goddamned!!!!! Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand. This week he talks to Angela Lim, co-founder and CEO of a free, online mental health platform called Clearhead.Mental Health is a crisis in this country, and there is welcome news of 1.9 billion of new funding in the latest budget, but right now, services are stretched. Finding the right care, at the right time, is a challenge. Knowing how to navigate the system is a challenge. Even knowing when to reach out for help, and where to do that is hard. The whole system itself is set up on a reactive model, but as with all health and fitness, preventative and proactive is better than reactive. So how do we do this with mental health care?Well, questions like these, and more, have led to today’s guest starting a new venture, creating an AI chatbot that helps to mimic a GP consult, but creating an atmosphere and feeling of a chat with a knowledgable friend. It helps to increase people’s comfort in sharing information, and sends people to the right places for the assistance they need next. It’s called Clearhead, it’s in market now, and making a difference from the get go. To chat the journey, the need and what’s next, co-founder, CEO and Dr, Angela Lim joined the podcast. Regression. Correlation. Normality. t-tests. Falsities of both the positive and negative varieties. How do these terms and techniques play nicely with digital analytics data? Are they the schoolyard bullies wielded by data scientists, destined to simply run by and kick sand in the faces of our sessions, conversion rates, and revenues per visit? Or, are they actually kind-hearted upperclassmen who are ready and willing to let us into their world? That's the topic of this show (albeit without the awkward and forced metaphors). Matt Policastro from Clearhead joined the gang to talk -- in as practical terms as possible -- about bridging the gap between traditional digital analytics data and the wonderful world of statistics.
