linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This February at Catching Up On Cinema, is “Ladies' Night”! All month long we'll be reviewing action movies headlined by women! First up this week, Kyle and Trevor review Chuck Hogan's, Barb Wire (1996)! Starring 90's sex symbol, Pamela Anderson, Barb Wire (1996) is a dull and self-serious comic book actioner that failed to catapult Anderson's career to leading lady status. While Pamela Anderson's star waned over the years, and she largely receded from the public eye by the 2010's, just last year, she received critical claim for her performance in The Last Showgirl (2024). This episode contains: It's an all new episode featuring your usual hosts! We discuss reading the “fine print” and service agreements, which reminds us of the story about Disney using it's Disney Plus agreement to defendant again a wrongful death claim that occurred at one of their parks. Ben went to San Deigo for a “not a bachelor party.” Ben is still tired from the trip. Devon has done nothing. Steven's dog, Charlie, has IVDD (Intervertebral disc disease for dogs) and has to be contained for three weeks, hopefully helping him regain the use of his hind legs. This is common in “long dogs.” This Week in Space: 'Spiders on Mars' fully awakened on Earth for 1st time — and scientists are shrieking with joy. Researchers have recreated the bizarre spider-like features seen on the surface of Mars for the first time ever. The breakthrough could help unravel further mysteries surrounding the static Martian arachnids. https://www.livescience.com/space/mars/spiders-on-mars-fully-awakened-on-earth-for-1st-time-and-scientists-are-shrieking-with-joy Book Review: Steven read Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. He is very excited to talk about this book. He listened to it rather than read it. Even Steven's wife loved the book. This is part of the new LitRPG genre. Ready Player One is an example of this genre. Dungeon Crawler Carl scratched all of Steven's itches. He describes the book as Ready Player One meets The Bobiverse meets The Hunger Games. Even non gamers will enjoy this book! It's safe to say Steven LOVED THIS BOOK, HE WANTS TO MARRY IT! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56791389-dungeon-crawler-carl Book Club: We continue the series with The Pit and the Box, part 2 of The Boy in the Iron Box by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. We would rather talk about anything else than this story. We eventually get the story and agree that there's not much there there. A character finds the titular boy in the box and standard horror stuff ensues. Steven makes a motion to not finish this story. The motion passes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CNYG9SR8 Next week we will be reviewing Mars Gardens in Walkabout Mini Golf. https://www.mightycoconut.com/blog/mars-field-notes Ben then leaves the podcast to work and Steven and Devon talk way too much about politics.
This episode contains: Devon contemplates the endless debate over his name and how it's pronounced. Is it Devon? Devin? Or maybe Devawwwwn? Rembember Final Destination and the infamous log scene? Emergency 911 and rebars? These have left an indelible mark on how millenials drive on the freeway. Ben shares how The Blair Witch Project made him a skeptic of everything he sees in media. Meanwhile, Star Wars Outlaws is still… fine. We brainstorm inspiration for Shatterpoint terrain. Wouldn't it be crazy to play as the Sarlacc Pit? Exciting news for music lovers: Linkin Park is back with a new album and single featuring a fresh lineup!
This episode contains: All three mighty hosts are here this week. Devon shares that a family is moving in next door. He wonders if they should build a ping-pong fence to create a “play-berhood.” Steven updates us on his mini painting projects and talks about getting life back on track. Ben recounts the long journey of reclaiming space on macOS and solving the wallpaper bug. He mentions tools like Wallpaper Engine and Fences by Stardock. Future or Now? Let's Get Skeptical: Ben discusses the rise of AI-powered photo editing tools like the Pixel 9's Magic Editor, which can create highly realistic fake images. This technology challenges our assumptions about the authenticity of photographs. Read more on The Verge In related news, a lawyer used ChatGPT in federal court, with disastrous results. Read more on Forbes Steven talks about The Acolyte being canceled and shares his thoughts on how loud idiots should be ignored. He also gives early impressions of Star Wars Outlaws after playing 10-12 hours. It's an open-world game, but it lacks the strong hook found in Fallen Order. Book Club: We discuss I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison. This chilling short story explores a dystopian future where a supercomputer has destroyed humanity, save for five individuals it tortures eternally. Goodreads Comic Adaptation Next week we are reading: Falling Down (The Boy in the Iron Box Book 1) by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. On today's episode we are talking about how employees' expectations of their companies have shifted, and how companies' mindsets might have to change to stay relevant.Joining us today is Chuck Hogan, Managing Partner at Your Best Life, an organization helping people to elevate finance, family, fitness and faith to maximize their Best Life through mentor strategizing, community and exclusive once in a lifetime experiences. His unique background of sales, business and relationship building gives him a rare perspective that enables him to successfully guide entrepreneurs, CEOS, and other top executives to new heights.Episode Highlights: Embrace Change and Possibility: The importance of embracing change and seeking possibilities, even when it means stepping out of your comfort zone. Staying in a confined space or routine can make one feel claustrophobic, especially for individuals who are free spirits or artists.Recognizing and Leveraging Skills: New-age leader managers are skilled at recognizing and leveraging their employees' unique talents, even if those talents aren't aligned with their passion. They encourage employees to mentor others and share their expertise.Patience and Job Satisfaction: The changing job landscape, where people switch jobs more frequently, may be due to a desire for continuous growth and a focus on self-expression.Balancing Scripted Experiences and Personality: The balance between scripted experiences in customer service and allowing employees to showcase their personalities. It emphasizes that effective communication goes beyond scripted words and involves factors like tone, energy, and intent.Rapid Technological Advancement: Technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, causing information to become outdated quickly and changing the expectations of individuals entering the workforce.Shift in Aspirational Figures: Historical business figures like the Carnegies and Vanderbilts no longer serve as the primary role models for aspiring professionals due to the changing nature of work.Infinite Mindset and Just Causes: Younger generations are motivated by an infinite mindset, seeking just causes and movements that align with their values and being willing to make sacrifices for these causes.Impact on Company Culture and Communication: The shift towards more independent or contract-based work can impact company culture. Effective communication and understanding of individual personalities are essential for meeting employees' needs and expectations.Chuck's Top 3 Takeaways for the Audience:1. Look in the mirror today and give appreciation to yourself. 2. You don't need a better life; you just need different options. You don't “need” to shift, get to “choose” to shift. 3. Get into the habit for time blocking. Set time aside for self-care. Your family and friends need the best of you, not what's left of you. "Being" and "doing" are two different concepts that relate to how we live our lives. "Being" refers to our state of existence, who we are as a person and our character traits. It encompasses our personality, values, beliefs, and attitudes. Being is more about the internal qualities that make up who we are as an individual. On the other hand, "doing" refers to our actions and behaviors. It encompasses what we do, our achievements, and our accomplishments. Doing is more about the external manifestations of our internal qualities. Both "being" and "doing" are important aspects of our lives. Our being shapes our doing, and our doing reflects our being. It is important to strike a balance between the two and to ensure that our actions are consistent with our values and beliefs. In essence, "being" is about who we are, and "doing" is about what we do with that identity. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or simply interested in the future of parenting, this event is not to be missed. We will delve deep into the issues that matter most, examining the challenges and opportunities facing parents today and offering practical insights and strategies for building strong, healthy, and fulfilling relationships with our children. Join Veenu Keller and Chuck Hogan on "Live Now with Veenu & Chuck" with today's theme “Self-care”. Self-care looks different for everyone, and that's okay. It could mean taking a bubble bath, going for a run, or simply taking a few deep breaths to center yourself. The important thing is to make self-care a regular part of your routine and to find practices that work for you. It's also important to remember that self-care is not selfish, but an act of self-love and compassion. By taking care of yourself, you are better equipped to show up fully for the people and causes you care about. So, whether you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or just need a little extra TLC, remember to prioritize self-care and give yourself the gift of well-being. You know, quite frankly, about 30 years ago, I decided that I've always been kind of a study of human behavior. But 22 years ago, when my wife and I found out, she was having our first child, I was like, Whoa, where's the instruction manual? And I was like, Okay, I better get my act in gear and business had already been propagating successfully. But to be honest with you, Brett, I was like going, oh, you know how to be a better man. And it started really coming down to understanding why I do what I do. What moves me. And I realized that I had been filled through my out my childhood. I'm the son of a military family. On my ongoing personal development journey, on Thursday's episodes, I now focus on consolidation. Repetition is the mother of all learning, they say. So instead of adding more knowledge, I revisit the previous episodes and consolidate the wisdom imparted by my guests. I intend to distil and share this wisdom with you in a way that you'll find something that clicks, something that inspires you to take action as a result. Today the topic is emotions. Understanding them, evaluating them, mapping them, managing them, and also emotional intelligence and the two components of building it. I revisit 4 of the previous episodes and share the wisdom of my guests: David Saville (#008), Chuck Hogan (#009 & #016), Rich Waterman (#022), and Uzma Naqvi (#061). ݆

Inspired by our partnering with the Massachusetts Historical Society for a program focusing on the dichotomy of Boston's image in Hollywood films, we begin a three part series with a selection of pictures that could be called "The Boston Crime Wave," or, as Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr calls this subgenera, "Boston Triple Decker Films," or, as Boston crime novelist Chuck Hogan refers to them, "Boston No-R movies." We explore what these films get right and what they get wrong in how they depict and use our fair city in geographical, character, and thematic terms.
