Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land. Forests are cut down to make space for animal grazing, agriculture, and to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction. Deforestation has greatly altered landscapes around the world and continues to do so today. Deforestation is the second largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, trailing only […]
101. Want to have a joy filled holiday season? 3 ways to beat overwhelm & be present with your loved ones for the Holidays. ***More Fa La La, Less Holiday Hangover Series with Guest Speaker Chelsea Wessman*** (part 1 of 3) Chelsea Wessman's back story & business story. How to beat overwehelm during the holidays and be more present: ***Step 1. Establish Non-Negotiables*** (1)-Create a "what not to do" list for the Holidays: *1A. letting go of traditions that add stress or overwhelm to the holidays, or ones that simply don't bring the joy filled spirit of Christmas. *1B. Holidays need to look how YOU want them to look - what's on your calendar is your choice - choose wisely how much you fill it & what you fill it with. *1C. You, as the Mom, control what kind of holiday season you and your family have - for the good or the bad... again focus on what brings joy to your family. (2)-Create a Holiday Live List as a Family: *2A. Live List is similar to a bucket list - but is more intentional and helps your family truly LIVE and THRIVE during the holidays. *2B. Sit down as a couple or as a family and do a mind sweep of all the traditions that bring you and your family joy during the holidays - narrow the list down to your top favorites. Make sure you let go of the traditions that bring stress, overwhelm and will leave you feeling burnt out. (3)-Calendar your holiday plans right then & there: *3A. Committments - put in your calendar all live list events that have specific dates & times tied to them. (Example - a family party, a work party, a ticket to an event that was purchased for a specific date and time, etc.) *3B. Live List items - only plan to do one thing a day - don't over schedule yourself and your family. Schedule time for things as simple as having a hot cocoa bar and a Christmas movie at home, or something as extravagant as going on a sleigh ride in the snow, from going to see Santa to taking family portraits for Christmas cards...calendar it ALL. Again, remember to not over schedule - keep it simple and you will find it will be filled with more joy. 4-Create an Advent Calendar for the Holidays: 4A. Assign Live List items a specific day from Dec. 1st until Christmas Day. 4B. Add Live List items to advent calendar to hang on wall to use for the 25 days of Christmas. (You can do little bags, boxes, or whatever you'd like) 4C. For fun - you can add a treat and a scripture verse to each day of your advent calendar. Each day the children will get to open one box or bag of the advent calendar and eat the treat, read the scripture verse as a family and do one simple tradition to go along with it for the 25 days of Christmas. This gets the kiddos excited about Christmas in a simple way - even if its as simple as reading a Christmas bedtime story to them that night - it makes it fun and something for them to look forward to because its in your advent calendar. Deco was 16 years old. We repeat, "Deco was 16!" Andrew Strong was a wee lad when he busted out covers of "Mustang Sally" and "Try a Little Tenderness" in the 1991 film, The Commitments. The Alan Parker drama-comedy about an assembled band of soul-singing Dubliners featured a rough and ready cast, great music, and one bummer of an ending. Three decades later, do the melodies linger? Do the accents still charm? And would a happier ending have made this movie a hit? The Old Roommates step up to the mic and give it a rewatch. Strategie Machen!
It is often easier to allocate ownership or blame to our results to something outside of ourselves than it is to own what we have been committed to. Consider for a second that whether you like it or not what you have is due to what you have been committed to.

Let's face it — our generation is scared of commitment. We're always feeling #FOMO and we barely keep small promises in fear of better options coming along. But as Christians, we're called to keep our commitments because it’s important to God as we see in Numbers 30 and Matthew 5. Christians should be marked by commitment. Adulting is making and keeping promises. If you think about it, everything great comes from a commitment. Are you willing to commit?

The Van, the final novel in Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy, explores the physical, psychological and social impact of unemployment on the protagonist, Jimmy Rabbitte Sr. Having been laid off from his job as a plasterer, Jimmy struggles to find a new role for himself within the family that is not connected to being the breadwinner.
In spite of the linguistic license that defines Roddy Doyle's The Snapper, the characters maintain crucial silences throughout in relation to meaningful issues. This episode examines the system of self-imposed censorship that operates among the female characters in particular and how it leads to isolation and an absence of true intimacy.
Fredric Jameson proposes that a "utopia" is a political idea that hopes to transcend, or exist outside, politics, but that must, inevitably, begin inside politics – at "the moment of the suspension of the political," the political must inevitably return. This holds true for the utopian imagined community – a "Dublin soul band" – proposed and tested in Roddy Doyle's The Commitments. If the imagined community represented by the band is haunted by the inevitable return of the political, the novel nonetheless embodies a utopia of speech – a Bakhtinian polyphony in which no one voice is figured as the privileged arbiter of meaning.
What has become known as the Barrytown trilogy: The Commitments (1988), The Snapper (1990) and The Van (1991), have become iconic in Irish culture. Centred on one family, the Rabbittes, Roddy Doyle makes reference to current events like the 1990 Soccer World Cup, and in dealing with the issues of teenage pregnancy and unemployment captures the mood of a nation requiring something light and entertaining amid the economic and cultural gloom of the late 1980s.
Roddy Doyle is perhaps the single most successful novelist of this period, gaining an audience far beyond the environs of Dublin's Northside where most of his writing is set. Along with the emergence of rock group U2, Doyle represents a brash generational shift, a confident certitude in his generation's worth and ability. His literary focus is not exactly the urban world; rather it is the suburban world.
