It's taken a while, but we finally have a Drum & Bass Local Selection mix. This has been on our radar for a while as there's so many excellent DnB DJs in the country, but we tended to focus more on the four four sounds we are known for and most familiar with. Colm Brophy AKA B-Origin has been involved in the Dublin dance music scene for the last decade, earning his stripes at the famous club night Strangeways at Pod, as well as infamous club nights Bruce Willis and Smalltalk. He’s a familiar DJ on the festival circuit too, often found playing Life Festival, Fuinnneamh and Croatia’s Membrain Festival. Down the years he’s supported the likes of Marcus Intalex, Commix, Serum and Frea4knc, among others. Colm runs a DnB and Jungle collective ‘Rise’, a much appreciate addition to the Irish scene. Happy 2019! Just a little late. But trust me, this one was worth the wait. Seeing as this is number 101 it seemed only appropriate to take it back to where it all began, (and has continued to hit over and over again) drum and bass. Got a full mix on deck for you today. Not gonna lie, it may be the best mix job I've done yet. I even managed to talk over it too! I know y'all get lonely when it's just the music. And yes, the title is in inspired by S.P.Y.'s albums. Seemed only fitting since he starts us off. In other podcast news, I had another episode nearly done but I think I am going to shelve it for the moment because I'm way behind on my SXSW preparations. My goal is to get that out before the festival but since I'm not actually going this year, I'm leaving that as a loose requirement. Rohan Kalé is a New Delhi based producer and DJ who has a deep-rooted love for D&B and jungle. Now based in Osaka, Japan, together with fellow Kiwi Tim Fieldes aka Big Ted formed the Nightbirds crew with an aim to revive the Drum & Bass scene and breathe new life into the city. Since starting, Nightbirds has brought through acts such as: Commix, The Upbeats, State of Mind, Om Unit, Swindle, Jonny Dub and Chimpo, with many more plans in the pipeline. Rasty’s sound is deep and intellectual, drawing influences from the likes of Calibre, dBridge and Skeptical, but you can also hear influences of footwork, grime and hip hop through his close work with other DJs and crews within the city. To celebrate, we’ve got a mix from M-Zine & Scepticz thats so full of Dubs that we haven’t been able to include a tracklist. Q: Hey guys, how’s it going? We're hyped to have you in the mix for us this month, it seems you've been busy in the studio lately. You've got a heap of tunes forthcoming, what can you tell us about those? Are there any tracks you're particularly proud of? “Easy guys, all’s going well thank you, big up for having us do the podcast this month ! There’s a couple of tunes forthcoming over the next couple of months Yes! We’ve got a shared 12” with DLR that has just come out today actually (1st of July), which we’re both very proud of. There’s an EP wrapped up for Blendits Audio (Rotterdam), an EP for Dispatch Recordings that has been coming together nicely, plus a tune on their scheduled VA Album (DIS100). Also we just had a tune released on Different Music for their GiraffeDay Charity LP, which we’re really glad to have been a part off, be sure to check that out if you haven’t already ;-)” Q: We're loving the collaboration with DLR on Warm Communications. The track has an amazing vibe and it’s a bit different from what we're used to hearing from you. How was it working with him? “Working with Jay was quite sick, he showed us around Bristol a bit, his workflow is very much inspiring, basically we brought some sample vibes along with us, got one of his beats in and the tune quite fluently came together, that’s what’s so exciting for us about this collaboration, the natural progression behind it. Furthermore Jay is one of the nicest and safest dudes we’ve met!” Q: So how do things normally work in the studio between you two? Are there any parts of production either of you like best? “Things usually start of with just a beat or a main idea of what we want to make, making sure the drums are right is key to making a tune, so we’ll spend a lot of time going back and forth between other tunes and comparing the drums to them first, if those are balanced out nicely, the rest quickly follows and tends to sit nicely with the backbone of the tune. Joeri is the man behind the engineering of the tunes, Tom provides some nice vibes and pads to compliment that.” Q: If you guys could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why? “We would have to say Mikal and/or Mako, they are really onto some vibes at the moment, and their mixdowns just sound so fat each and every time, and their music is just so on point!” Q: So finally, what can we expect from your podcast? There’s lots of new music in there that we haven't heard before. The Greenwich Village loft space occupied by Toon Books is one part office space, part living comics museum. There’s a row of iMacs where most of the business is done, from filling orders to taking product shots, while just above on a second level balcony, a spool of bubble wrap roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle leans against a wall of bookshelves fit for a small library. There are decades of fascinating ephemera lining the walls, original comics pages, an in-store cardboard cutout for Chris Ware’s Acme Novelty Library and, most compelling of all, the Gary Panter classic comics head mashup painting that graced the first issue of the RAW’s second volume (1989’s “Open Wounds from the Cutting Edge of Commix”). It’s hardly a surprise, of course, that so many amazing pieces call the space their home. Francoise Mouly has been here for decades herself, since the days when she and husband Art Spiegelman first altered the course of the New York City avant garde comics community with a nascent anthology aimed at offering a publishing home to unknowns like Charles Burns, Joost Swarte, Ben Katchor and, naturally, Spiegelman, who used those pulpy pages to serialize a groundbreaking first-hand account of the holocaust starring a cast of cat and mice. That the Toon Books office occupies the same space is certainly no coincidence. Like RAW before it, the kids comics publishing company was launched to fill a perceived hole in the comics community in the wake of a media that had arguably overcorrected. Thanks to trailblazing works like Maus, the headline-ready phrase “comics aren’t just for kids” had quickly turned from rallying cry to cliche as adult-focused books rapidly became the norm in the intervening decades since RAW closed its doors. In the 00s, Mouly — by then the art director of The New Yorker — pitched a line of education kids bolstered by Jeff Smith’s epic fantasy masterpiece to Scholastic. By 2008, the idea gave way to Toon Books, an independent entity focused on books by cartoonists like Spiegelman, Smith and Eleanor Davis aimed at teaching kids to read and bolstered by detailed lesson plans aimed at reintroducing comics into a classroom setting. A half-dozen years later, Toons’ scope continues to grow, including the recent publication of a Hanzel and Gretel adaptation penned by Sandman scribe Neil Gaiman. I sat down with Mouly in the middle of Toon Books' cramped quarters to discuss the company's role in the ever-evolving perception of comics as a educational tool.
