It feels like just yesterday that we made the transition from a radio station to this new format called podcasts. Following the success of the all Evolve affair we are back this month with another special show to mark our 80th outing. This month joined by legendary MC, Fokus. Having emerged onto the scene in the early 00's, based in Hertfordshire, Fokus has been building his reputation locally, nationally and internationally for over 20 years. We first met on Hertfordshire's Impact FM around 2000/1. We were also lucky enough to acquire his talents for our Drum Project events. From his time on Origin FM, to London events like Traffic, Renegade Hardware and the legendary Therapy Sessions, Fokus has been learning his craft well. I was lucky enough to watch him at his best at the Sofa Sound event in Bristol in September 2019, he was absolute class. As you can see from his discography, versatility is key. Fokus is at home on a deep rolling beat as he is on the toughest and darkest of drums. Right from his first release in 2011 to now his choices for collaboration are important to him. A long standing partnership with show favourite label, Dispatch Recordings, has been a constant exemplified by last year's release of his solo release the massive ‘Frequencies EP'. Now working with other artists including DLR, Black Barrel, Dub Head, DBR UK, Tephra & Arkoze, Bredren and Ben Soundscape. He has said… “I think it's important for an MC in the Drum and Bass scene to evolve with the music and avoid the clichés. I like spending time on my written rhymes, but I also try to freestyle as much as possible. It's more spontaneous and the crowd can really vibe off it. For me, a radio show is the perfect environment to chat about some deeper rhymes, as people can hear every word and appreciate the story or message within the lyrics”. To celebrate, we’ve got a mix from M-Zine & Scepticz thats so full of Dubs that we haven’t been able to include a tracklist. Q: Hey guys, how’s it going? We're hyped to have you in the mix for us this month, it seems you've been busy in the studio lately. You've got a heap of tunes forthcoming, what can you tell us about those? Are there any tracks you're particularly proud of? “Easy guys, all’s going well thank you, big up for having us do the podcast this month ! There’s a couple of tunes forthcoming over the next couple of months Yes! We’ve got a shared 12” with DLR that has just come out today actually (1st of July), which we’re both very proud of. There’s an EP wrapped up for Blendits Audio (Rotterdam), an EP for Dispatch Recordings that has been coming together nicely, plus a tune on their scheduled VA Album (DIS100). Also we just had a tune released on Different Music for their GiraffeDay Charity LP, which we’re really glad to have been a part off, be sure to check that out if you haven’t already ;-)” Q: We're loving the collaboration with DLR on Warm Communications. The track has an amazing vibe and it’s a bit different from what we're used to hearing from you. How was it working with him? “Working with Jay was quite sick, he showed us around Bristol a bit, his workflow is very much inspiring, basically we brought some sample vibes along with us, got one of his beats in and the tune quite fluently came together, that’s what’s so exciting for us about this collaboration, the natural progression behind it. Furthermore Jay is one of the nicest and safest dudes we’ve met!” Q: So how do things normally work in the studio between you two? Are there any parts of production either of you like best? “Things usually start of with just a beat or a main idea of what we want to make, making sure the drums are right is key to making a tune, so we’ll spend a lot of time going back and forth between other tunes and comparing the drums to them first, if those are balanced out nicely, the rest quickly follows and tends to sit nicely with the backbone of the tune. Joeri is the man behind the engineering of the tunes, Tom provides some nice vibes and pads to compliment that.” Q: If you guys could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why? “We would have to say Mikal and/or Mako, they are really onto some vibes at the moment, and their mixdowns just sound so fat each and every time, and their music is just so on point!” Q: So finally, what can we expect from your podcast? There’s lots of new music in there that we haven't heard before. The name Verb has been on the, Drum & Bass scene for many years. He has been known for representing the darker side of drum & bass on His Kool FM show every Saturday for many years, but now Verb is a rising name in the production, which has Remixed Manifest’s Dub War PT2 on the Nitty Gritty E.P on Deception in 2011. Also has a forthcoming remix of Future Cut’s classic "Whiplash" on Renegade Hardware & another remix done for Breakage ‘s (I bring you the Future) classic track which is becoming a club anthem with support from all top flight Dj’s. D.R.O.P.S is a recently formed collective of three like-minded, forward thinking musicians, Teksteppa, Cemtek and Arookai, with very different musical pasts. The sum of these parts equals a deep techy party vibe. Teksteppa has been producing DnB for a number of years, with releases on Blue Cheese Records, UKDNB and more. Recently his releases have gained DJ support from S.P.Y, Optiv, Muffler, AMC, Mutated Forms, Danny Wheeler, Hazard and Mind Vortex, amongst others. He has had tracks top out at numbers 11 and 32 in the Drum & Bass Arena charts.Teksteppa is a force to be reckoned with and it seems that this is just the beginning for him. Arookai AKA Mike Smythy has been heavily involved with the music industry for years and, although relatively new to DnB, has had countless releases on highly respected labels in other genres. He is an important part of the freeform hardcore scene, has had mixes featured in the top 5 dance compilations on iTunes and has played all over the UK. Arookai is a music junky, regardless of genre. Expect eclectic twisted sounds coming from his direction this year! Cemtek AKA Scott Geden is a purveyor of dirty, techy basslines and FX fuelled atmospheric naughtiness. When he is not glued to his studio he is usually found on the decks and has an extremely keen ear for music. His musical past has taken him through numerous production courses and after years of producing hip hop he has slowly moved towards DnB. Cemtek will become a name to look out for. Collectively they spend every waking minute in the studio, they have bookings coming up in London, Bristol and Stratford upon Avon and will be looking to release some serious sounds this year!
