I'm a Blubrry affiliate, but that's not the only reason I'm telling you this. I've been using Blubrry Podcasting as my hosting service for my podcast for years and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. They give great customer service, you're in complete control of your own podcast, you can run it from your own website, and it just takes a lot of the work out of podcasting for me. I find for that reason that it's a company that I can get behind 100% and say, “You should try this.” Try Blubrry. It doesn't require a long-term contract, and it's just a great company, period. It also has free technical support by email, video, and phone, so you can get a human being there. Isn't that nice? If you want to podcast, try out Blubrry. No long-term contract, excellent distribution, and great technical support, too, by email, video, and on the phone. I've included an affiliate link on this blog. Here's a link to a PDF copy of the interview. Debbi: Hi, everyone. Our guest today began his love of reading as an employee with B. Dalton Booksellers. Remember them? I do, fondly. He's the author of the Arthur Nakai Mystery Series which takes place in New Mexico, the only part of the Southwest I still haven't really seen to my satisfaction. I want to go back someday. Debbi: His second novel, Death Waits in the Dark, was a finalist in the American Book Fest Awards 2020 and won the Feathered Quill Award in 2021. His latest novel is When Silence Screams. Debbi: I'm pleased to have with me, author Mark Edward Langley. Debbi: Hi, Mark. It's great to see you here. Mark: Hi, good to be here. Debbi: I'm glad you're here. Thank you. Mark: Happy to be here. Debbi: Excellent. Good. First of all, I've got to say, I used to love B. Dalton Booksellers. What did you do there? Mark: Oh, Lord. You're going back to 1980, and my parents, my family, moved down there, but my dad got transferred, and it was just close by. I... "Well, I'll get a job there," and I ended up, for the time I was there, started out in the backroom, receiving the books, getting them all labeled and stickered and stuff, and putting them out. And then, got to be on the register and that kind of stuff. So, ended up stocking and work and that. And I loved being down there because it was right down the street from the Windmill Dinner Theater, and a lot of actors came through doing plays there, and a few of them actually stopped in the store to buy some stuff. Debbi: Excellent. Mark: I loved it. I loved it. But I got instilled in reading then. I was watching the Spenser for Hire series on television. And one of the ladies I worked with said, "If you love the show, you should read the books." So I started reading the books and was hooked from thereon. Debbi: Isn't it interesting how things often start with television? I know that my love of mystery started with watching Honey West way back in the day. Mark: Oh, boy. Debbi: Now I'm going back. I was watching the Spenser for Hire series on t...

INTRODUCING SHERLOCK HOLMES' FEMALE RIVALS! This unique collection for connoisseurs of detection done female style brings back six of the greatest fictional women sleuths of the era of gaslights and horseless carriages. Fans of Kinsey Milhone and other contemporary women detectives, as well as of Agatha Christie and Honey West, will love this collection featuring the foremothers of today's fictional female crime-fighters. Long out of print and unobtainable, these celebrated women 'tecs ― Baroness Orczy's Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, Anna Katharine Green's Violet Strange, Arthur B. Reeve's Constance Dunlap, C. L. Pirkis' Loveday Brooke, Valentine's Daphne Wrayne, and Edgar Jepson and Robert Eustace's Ruth Kelstern ― were once nearly as famous as the fictional sleuth of Baker Street himself. Their fame waned in the long decades of the 1930s through the '80s, when female sleuths took a backseat to Sam Spade, Nero Wolfe, and the like. But, they are back to baffle and thrill contemporary readers in The Legendary Women Detectives edited by Jean Marie Stine. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

From Charlie's Angels to Brooklyn 99, how have female detectives and crime solvers been depicted on TV? We discuss some notable TV detectives from Honey West to Jessica Fletcher, talk about how shows like Law and Order made progress in representation, and get into CSI and other shows that (thankfully) start to show more complex female characters. This episode also includes discussions about The Closer, Veronica Mars, Major Crimes, and some new shows this season that have us feeling hopeful. It's pretty obvious from the start that we think Brooklyn 99 is the most progressive example we have - and guest Cristina Sullivan shares her take on Latina representation in the show. We commend its humor, diversity, portrayal of LGBT characters, and its approach to important topics. But how did we get here - and why is this show a rarity? In this episode, we end on a high note of progress, with some optimism about the future of female detectives on TV. Find Profess-Hers on Twitter and Instagram @professhers. Only in the 70's could a beefy, drawling television character actor change gears and morph into not only an action hero, but even some measure of sex symbol to an audience bedazzled by an aging, Vegas Elvis and the good humored down home charm of Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson... After nearly a decade toiling away in bit parts on series from Honey West and Gunsmoke to the Mod Squad to Mission Impossible, Texan good ol' boy Joe Don Baker brought a likeably rootsy appeal to his roles, from the corn pone Death Wishisms of breakthrough hit Walking Tall to roles with kung fu specialist Robert Clouse (Golden Needles), as hard boiled, vaguely noiresque detectives (Mitchell, Speedtrap), in outright horror films (The Pack) and as crusty authority figures (To Kill a Cop, Power), sometimes even in comedies (Fletch, Joysticks, Leonard Part 6)! Eventually landing a recurring role in both the Dalton and Brosnan runs of the James Bond franchise, he'd spend later years filling in for Carroll O' Connor on In The Heat of the Night and working artsy critical faves like Cape Fear and Reality Bites, even dropping in for a spot in the late 90's comedy smash Mars Attacks! Remembered more these days for being sent up mercilessly in no less than two memorable episodes of MST3K, join us as we delve deep into the Deep South, braving those crawdads, polk salad, chitlins and greens for some tasty down home cinema, to talk the films of the inimitable Joe Don Baker, only here on Weird Scenes! Debbi Mack interviews thriller author Zoë Sharp on the Crime Cafe podcast. The transcript is below, if you'd like to read it. Debbi: Hi everyone! This is the Crime Cafe, your podcasting source of great crime, suspense and thriller writing. I am your host, Debbi Mack. Before I bring on my guest, let me remind you that The Crime Cafe 9 Book Set is available for sale at all major and some minor online retailers. The Crime Cafe Short Story Anthology is also available online for sale and it's $0.99 for the anthology and $1.99 for the boxed set, so check it out. Just go to debbimack.com and look under “Crime Cafe” or “Books” to find the books there. And with that, I would like to now introduce an author who created one of the most awesome female protagonists ever. The character is Charlie Fox and the author is Zoe Sharp. Zoe, it's great to have you here today! Zoe: Thank you very much for inviting me, Debbi. It's a pleasure to be here. Debbi: I can't tell you how happy I am to have you on! So, you have one of the most fascinating bios ever! You actually wrote your first novel at 15? Zoe: I did! It dates me horribly to say my father typed it up with carbon copies. And it went out to publishers and received what's known in the trade as rave rejections. So, it still sits in a box in the attic and my father, bless him, keeps threatening to get it out and put it on eBay. Debbi: Oh, that's so cool! Zoe: At which point I remind him that it won't be long before I am choosing his nursing home and he should be nice to me. Debbi: Good for you! And you became a photojournalist. I think that's very cool and you mention that Charlie Fox grew out of the death threats you received as a photojournalist. What was that about? Zoe: Yes! That was, that was a weird set of circumstances. I was working in the motoring field. I was involved with a lot of auto magazines and I was sent to see a collection of cars with a guy. When I arrived two things happened. The guy was very surprised to see that I was not on my own as he was clearly expecting, and the collection of cars did not exist. So, it was around the time when a real estate agent in the UK, called Suzy Lamplugh, who'd gone to show a client around a vacant house, and was never seen again. And the death threat letters started, you know, shortly after that incident. And I was kind of wondering whether it was the guy who'd been hoping to get me on my own. So, it tends to concentrate your mind. Started me learning an awful lot of self-defense. But it also sort of sparked off the character of Charlie Fox. Debbi: Well I can just imagine. That must have been very scary. Zoe: It was first annoying and only afterwards when the ramifications sank in did it get a lot more scary. Debbi: [laughs] Yeah. Well I love Charlie Fox. When I was a kid watching action movies, it was always the women who put themselves in harm's way and who would do what I would call “tripping over their shoelaces”. Running with the man and then they would fall or something. Zoe: Yes, always sprain their ankle. Debbi: Exactly! They would need some sort of help. But, I've always enjoyed strong women on movies and on TV. When I was a kid I used to watch The Avengers and I just loved Mrs. Peel and, and Honey West. I'm dating myself now. But… Zoe: It was exactly those kind of characters that I wanted to get to with Charlie Fox. And it still bugs me that even now you have to specify that a female character is strong. Debbi: Yes. Zoe: Whereas you don't have to do that with a male character. Nobody ever describes, you know, Lee Child's Jack Reacher as a strong male character because you just, you kind of assume that unless there is something very specific about the character, he is going to be strong just by the very fact that he's male. So, I like to write about capable female characters and even in the stand alone, I've done the female character of Kelly Jacks, is still very capable and,

Ian McDonald, legendary rocker and co-founder of King Crimson and Foreigner, joins Nancy to talk about his creative journey, great collaborations, new projects and the power of experience. Read more in Nancy’s online column Showbiz Analysis for Parade Magazine.
A British rock giant and an acclaimed and respected member of New York's acting community walk into a recording studio ... and produce one of 2017's strongest and most compelling albums. This odd couple consists of multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, a founding member of both King Crimson and Foreigner, and guitarist and lead vocalist Ted Zurkowski, co-founder of New York's celebrated Shakespeare ensemble, Frog & Peach, and a long-time member of the world-famous Actors Studio. Together, this unlikely new songwriting team conjured the album Bad Old World under the banner of their quartet, HONEY WEST. Bad Old World is filled with memorable melodies and clever and sophisticated lyrics served on a bed of guitar-driven rock 'n' roll played by top-shelf musicians, including drummer Steve Holley, whose credits include Paul McCartney & Wings and many others, and McDonald's son, Maxwell McDonald, on bass. The album also boasts a guest appearance by Graham Maby (Joe Jackson, They Might Be Giants) on bass ("Brand New Car," "California," "A Girl Called Life"). While it's a modern sound stamped by Ian McDonald's world-class musicianship and production, it also bears an instant familiarity, thanks to a sonic blueprint recalling such Brit-rock titans as The Move and Mott the Hoople. HONEY WEST - named in honor and celebration of the proto-feminist 1960s cult TV spy series starring the ever-alluring Anne Francis - was already up and running when the two came together. For McDonald, discovering the scope and breadth of Zurkowski's talents was the catalyst for wanting to create a musical partnership. Make sure to catch Honey West on their new tour! http://www.honeywestmusic.com/
Guest co-host Frank Tourangeau joins Gary in Booth One this week. Frank is a director, educator, speech coach, and all-around performing arts aficionado, whose knowledge of Chicago and New York theater is wide-ranging and insightful. I guess we should call him "Doctor" Tourangeau, as he holds a PhD in Speech and Performance Art from Southern Illinois University, and did his dissertation on the interactions of right brain/left brain as it relates to emotional cognition in performance. Wow. One of the smartest people we know! Frank once coached our producer in high school speech competitions and relates a few stories about her performance piece and its reception at competitions. More here. Frank is retired now from his professorship at the College of DuPage in Wheaton, IL and spends much of his time supporting theater and film in and around the city of Chicago. Gary does an Academy Awards recap by reviewing his picks along with those from Roscoe and Paul Stroili. Looks like Gary was the big winner with 6 out of 9 correct picks. Roscoe: 4. Paul: 3. Prize: $0. Sally Field fares marginally well in reviews of The Glass Menagerie, but the production gets disappointing notices for its deconstructionist quality and unusual staging. We highlight the New York Daily News review as a representative example. Frank and Gary romp through what's coming to the boards on Broadway and what's "in the works" for future seasons. Select upcoming openings: Come From Away, The Play That Goes Wrong, War Paint, The Little Foxes, Hello, Dolly! and A Doll's House Part 2(!). Scheduled for later - The Prince of Broadway; The Minutes by Tracy Letts; Bombshell, the Marilyn Monroe musical from Smash; The Cher Show; The Devil Wears Prada; Gypsy(again! this time starring Imelda Staunton); To Kill a Mockingbird (adapted by Aaron Sorkin); King Kong from Australia; and The Honeymooners starring Hank Azaria. Will all these come to fruition and make it on the Big White Way? Only time will tell. We discuss the brilliant new film from Jordan Peele, Get Out, a semi-horror thriller with more than a few twists and turns. Both Frank and Gary like this picture immensely and try not to give too much away while discussing various scenes and plot points. There are elements of science fiction and some suspension of disbelief is required as the harrowing story hurtles its way forward. We encourage everyone to go see it! After you've seen it, read this excellent analysis in The Atlantic. Get Out was produced by friend of the show, Jason Blum. Congratulations, Jason and Blumhouse! Pride Films and Plays, a new local producing organization whose mission is to change lives by creating diverse new work with LGBTQ+ characters or themes, has mounted a production of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert in a 99-seat theater with as many production elements as can be created in a small space. It features Chicago legend, Honey West! Read a great interview with her here. Sadly, this production will be closed by the time this episode of Booth One airs, but Frank describes the remarkable time he had at a recent viewing and what marvelous work PFP is doing as a young company. Interested listeners should check out the Pride web site for upcoming theatrical and film presentations of important new work. "Never get out of the boat" is one of Gary's favorite mantras, and this story about Great White Sharks amassing off the coast of Cape Cod reinforces that sage advice. The Boston Globe article enumerates the shark population in this area at 147. Of those predators, 89 are considered "new" sharks, meaning they have not been documented before, and that the population of these giant godless killing machines may be far more than previously estimated. Though the last fatal shark attack in Massachusetts was in 1936, Gary believes the odds are not in man's favor. Swim at your own risk would be a good sign for the beach above! How's that for "public education?"

Avengers Academy shines, Old Bruce Wayne is a prick, Honey West is super fun, and Israeli snacks are delicious. Also there is an phat beatz. Tell us what you think on and if you like the show!
