**** There is a wild 50% off strore wide sale for all my vinyl and merch until the end of the year! https://shorturl.at/FXgkf This was one of the most entertaining chats Ive had in ages tbh. I had no real idea who or what Eric was about before this and it turns out we would get along famously. Plus he lives here. Wild. What a fun hang this was. I tell you what, a huge part of it was that it was in my studio and thus NOT on zoom and guess what? the human connection is WAY better without digital mitigation. Who would have thought? I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. He's a really badass musician and started very very young. His first main gig was with Adrian Belew !! I mean WHAT? I trust you know Adrian who plays in King Crimson and Talking Heads (Remain in Light anyone?? ooof!!!) He's the drummer of the excellent Dr Dog and he's worked with so many cool folks like Daniel Rossen, Nels Cline oh and you know Taylor Swift.... to name but a few. Wild knowledge of music and a bright mind. Enjoy

"Past Lives" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it instantly garnered universal acclaim, with many calling it the best of the festival. It has now gone on to be regarded as one of the year's best films overall, including winning the Gotham Award for Best Film and receiving nominations from the Critics Choice and Golden Globes for Best Picture. Composers Christopher Bear and Daniel Rossen were kind enough to spend some time talking about their gentle and moving score for the film, which quietly works its way over viewers to elicit an emotional response in a non-manipulative manner. Please be sure to check out the film, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories, including Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for "Quiet Eyes." If you're like me and came of age in the 90's, then Supergrass loom large. The UK band exploded into the Brit Pop scene like a firecracker, with a song that captured the cheeky charm they'd come to be known for. Six albums followed, before they called it a day. And a few years later, lead singer Gaz Coombes went out on his own.In the last decade or so, Gaz has released a handful of critically acclaimed solo albums, and despite the madness of the era he came up in, remains one of the more grounded and lovely muso's around.Gaz came to Australia to support Robbie Williams on some huge stadium shows, and while he was here I asked him to Take 5. From Scott Walker to Broadcast to Lennon, this is a brilliant conversation and peek into a great songwriter's brain.Captain Beefheart - Sure ‘Nuff 'n' Yes, I doDaniel Rossen - Silent SongBroadcast - I Found The FScott Walker – It's Raining TodayJohn Lennon – Remember
As usual, we are taking issue with the lack of credit these amazing albums are getting that were released in the past year. Normally around the end of the year many outlets will publish a “Best of YYYY”, or a “Best of YYYY”, and we often do not see any of our favorite albums on these lists. Therefore, we are taking it upon ourselves to spread the good word about some of the most amazing music that we found inspiring in this past year, 2022. First of all please send music, comments and jokes to lidellmakeswaves@gmail.com and I'll check em :) Feel free to join the pod patreon for the best sounds and max patches in the known universe and all that! link HERE Let's get on with the show! Ive been lucky enough to work with Daniel on my album Compass (2010) where he overdubbed a stack of these double speed, beautiful burnt crystaline, shimmering pentatonic runs that wind their way through the song “completely exposed” I was working with Chris Taylor from the Band Grizzly bear which is how many of you will have doubtless discovered the magic of Mr Rossen's voice and song craft and what a craft it is! His style is so singular and he's got that passion in his writing and playing that sets him apart with an intricate, elegant touch on guitar that has both urgency and solidity. There's real fire in him and at the same time a soft vulnerability and it all races around in these huge landscapes he paints in sound. Amazingly this is his first LP and what a beauty it is. A Timeless beauty at that. It's called YOU BELONG THERE and was released a few days ago on APRIL 8 2022 on warp records. He's currently out there, SOLO on the road on a short US and Euro Tour. I saw him in Nashville and was mesmerized. What a talent he is. A humble soul also, with immense talent and a welcome dash of dry humour. HERE is a link to his webpage so you can see he's coming to your town :) so with all that said, please welcome to the show, the rather wonderful. In this episode, we get to meet Daniel Rossen. Dan is best known as one of the singers/songwriters/guitarists of indie rock veterans Grizzly Bear. Now, he has released his debut solo full-length album, the stunning You Belong There, which comes ten years after his first EP, Silent Hour/Golden Mile. In this chat, Dan and I talk a lot about the new record, including some of the inspirations and methods behind his often-complex songs. We talk about Grizzly Bear's past, present, and future, as well as some of his other side projects from throughout the years, working alone during the pandemic, and much more. I hope you enjoy, and thank you for listening.
Johann Wald selects some of the week's latest releases from the world of indie rock, making space for a few tracks from the imminent Primavera Sound 2022 line-up to get the juices flowing. As broadcast January 24, 2022 with plenty of remembrance for your podcast throwback. Tonight to start both halves of the show, we remember two legends. The Father of South African Jazz, Hugh Masekela, passed away January 23, 2018 so we started the show with him and Ojah doing their thing way back in their prime before Masekela went into exile to New York City. Part 3 we started with the big news this past week, which was the passing of Meatloaf aged 74 last Thursday, with a recount of a story when he almost threw Prince Andrew into a moat in 1987, which he probably should have done in hindsight. For tonight, Danno flew 100% solo with Katherin Bass sick, so we had lots of new tunes to give a whirl in both hours, with new joints from Beach House, Khruangbin, Big Thief, and a surprise album drop from Pedro The Lion to discuss as well!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Hugh Masekela feat Ojah – Afro Beat BluesBeach House – Only You KnowKAINA – AppleVundabar feat Indigo de Souza – Alien Blues ReduxNilufer Yanya – midnight sunSevdaliza – High Alone Part II (32:45)Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Chocolate HillsPedro The Lion – Making The Most of ItYeek – Freaky (RGB)The Head & The Heart – Every Shade of BlueBabeheaven feat Navy Blue – Make Me WannaBig Thief – Simulation SwarmDaniel Rossen – Shadow In The Frame Part III (62:47)Meatloaf – I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)AURORA – A Temporary HighConan Gray – JigsawCharlie Puth – Light SwitchGriff x Sigrid – Head On FireYears & Years – Night Call Part IV (94:23)Lana Del Rey – Watercolor EyesHolly Humberstone – London Is LonelyRod Wave – Cold Decemberiann dior ft Travis Barker & Machine Gun Kelly – thought it wasSASAMI – Take CareWaxahatchee – FireHAIM – The Steps
The four piece Brooklyn indie rock band "Grizzly Bear" originally started out as a collection of songs written and recorded by frontman Ed Droste, however feeling that he didn't want to release a solo project, or shine the light on himself, he ended up recruiting fellow musicians Christopher Bear, Chris Taylor and Daniel Rossen in order to bring his project to the live stage, and for a debut US tour.Since those early days the band have released five studio albums and toured the world, opening for massive acts such as Radiohead, and have even composed songs for the "Twilight" movies.Their last album dropped in 2017 and Ed Droste has since announced he has left the band. The future for "Grizzly Bear" may be uncertain, but what is for sure is that they have put out a solid back-catalogue of impressive material and in this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the band's early formation, their approach to music and the guys spin some of their favorite tracks from across the five albums."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
The Brooklyn band Golden Suits is led by singer and guitarist Fred Nicolaus. You may know him from his earlier band Department of Eagles, or perhaps his duo with Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen. Fred released the first Golden Suits album in 2013 and has just put out the band's followup effort, called Kubla Khan. It's full of catchy, often literate, occasionally eccentric songs, which the band plays in-studio. (From the Archives, 2015.) Here's the dancey "Gold Feeling," where Nicolaus is out to prove that he has all of the right moves to his imaginary middle school dream girl.
This episode digs into the Brooklyn quartet formed in 2002 consisting of Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen, Chris Taylor and Christopher Bear. A band with an ethereal and searching sound, a sweet counterpoint to the current climate. A group that boasts exceptionally intricate musicianship, discovering plateaus of indie-folk-rock not yet found or even attempted.

A Mixtape For Omar D Little (Cause A Man Got To Have A Code) by Cian Ó Cíobháin 26/08/09 Galway, Ireland 1. Biosphere – Kobresia I kicked off my first podcast for Shock with a field recording from Geir Jenssen, AKA Biosphere. Here he is doing the honours again with a track from the 2001 re-issue of his classic ‘Substrata' LP, released on Touch. 2. Cocteau Twins – Lazy Calm I've been revisiting the Cocteau's back catalogue with brio recently. This one, from an LP called ‘Victorialand', brings me back to when I was about 14, discovering for the first time that a whole universe of music existed beyond the Hit Parade. 3. Broadcast – Echo's Answer From a LP called ‘The Noise Made By People' on Warp, this Birmingham band have been making beautiful music with a minimum of fuss for almost 12 years now. 4. Torngat – Afternoon Moon Pie Montréal ambient post-rockers with a gorgeous instrumental from their recent LP ‘La Petite Nicole' on Alien8. 5. Q Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses (Krikor Edit) You know that bit toward the end of ‘The Silence Of The Lambs' where Buffalo Bill, the serial killer, is applying his make-up and dancing in front of the mirror? This is the song (though not the edit) that's playing. I always thought it seemed out of context as it's a beautiful song with genuine pathos. 6. Stimming – Song For Isabelle One of the most beautiful 4/4 tunes I've heard this year, from Hamburg's Martin Stimming. 7. Coalition Of The Killing V Eutactic – Haven't Gotten So Far Another tuneful 4/4 cut coming from a mournful place, taken from the ‘What Of The Future?' EP on Auralism. 8. Clark – Absence I must admit that I'm not a fan of Chris Clark's new LP ‘Totems Flare'. Too gnarly in places, with overwrought Crookers-esque synths. 9. Department Of Eagles – Round The Bay Side project from Daniel Rossen, of Grizzly Bear, and his friend Fred Nicolaus. This song is my personal highlight from the ‘In Ear Park' LP. 10. Atlas Sound – River Card Would it be heresy to suggest that the music that Brandon James Cox has released under his Atlas Sound alias has more depth and panache than his more publicised work as Deerhoof? 11. Linda Scott – I've Told Every Little Star One of my favourite songs ever. Thank you David Lynch for introducing it to me. Used hauntingly (as are all songs from the fifties & sixties in his movies of course) on the ‘Mulholland Drive' soundtrack. 12. The Shirelles – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? While I was busting out my girl-group moves, I thought I might as well stick this one in, which - like the Linda Scott song - was a million-selling hit in 1961. 13. Animal Collective – Bluish I have yet to hear a superior LP this year to ‘Merriweather Post Pavillion.' 14. Cane 141 – Eager Boy Comics It's no secret that I consider Cane 141's ‘Garden Tiger Moth' the best Irish LP since MBV's ‘Loveless'. Timeless perfectly-crafted indie pop with shades of Stereolab, Pere Ubu, The Go-Betweens and C-86. 15. Cinnamon Chasers – Luv Deluxe This retro/future bachelor-pad disco-pop ditty was composed by one Russ Davies, the son of Dave and nephew of Ray Davies, from The Kinks. 16. The Long Blondes – Fulwood Babylon Speaking of The Kinks, who are mentioned in this song, as are illicit Russ Mayer films, this is a Long Blondes B-side, which - I believe – may have been Erol Alkan's first production for this now sadly defunct Sheffield band. This is what I imagine when you say the words ‘indie disco'. 17. The Specials – Friday Night, Saturday Morning Like the aforementioned Kinks & The Long Blondes, this 1981 ska classic tells its tale with a deft and humorous touch. 18. Seavault – Cornfields Tucked away on CD#2 of a Morr Music compilation entitled ‘Not Given Lightly', which is mainly a covers of classic 80's Kiwi indie pop, this one – which isn't a cover as far as I know.
