The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
Go from being trapped in the job you've built for yourself to building a wealth-generating machine. Dan & Ian challenge service businesses to determine their LTV to CAC ratio so they can improve their cashflow and run a “real” business that gives them the lifestyle they want. Calculating the LTV to CAC ratio may sound hard (and boring), but it's no harder than solving all those other things you're struggling with in your business. Also, Dan's hot take on the digital nomad ratio and being “relatively” wealthy. Plus, one lucky listener (and email subscriber) will win a free ticket to this year's DCBKK (over $1,000 value) in October. Details on how to enter in this week's newsletter. Over 400 entrepreneurs gathered in the world-class city of Bangkok to swap stories, participate in masterminds, and fuel each other to reach new business heights in 2024. Dan & Ian react to a viral article that asks the question: Does the American Dream still make sense in 2023? They point to the internationality of the concept, and muse about how the American Dream is changing and how it's particularly relevant to digital nomads and founders. Dan also gives a rundown of the Elon Musk bio and extracts the business lessons he gleaned from the book. Lastly, with DCBKK less than a month away, Dan & Ian reminisce about why they started this event in Bangkok over 10 years ago, and why it's still worth the trip. Dan raises the question: if you only had to implement one simple framework to improve your business, what would it be? In other words, what's your minimum effective dose of operational practices? Sometimes–most of the time–one simple change can make a huge difference. Today's guest represents this line of thinking to a T. Lydia Machova talks about the ROI of spending a month implementing one simple idea, developing an integrator/visionary relationship, and the minimum effective dose of operational practices that improved her business. Lastly, Dan & Lydia talk about how founders often confuse assistance with delegation and how Lydia built an operating system that empowers her team to take ownership, solve problems, and send fewer Slack messages. Dan (https://twitter.com/TropicalMBA) and Ian (https://twitter.com/AnythingIan) give the inside scoop about their upcoming events strategy and the realization that prompted them to relaunch their hiring search not for an events planner but a business-minded community organizer. In light of resetting the event strategy for 2024, Dan also chats with the DCx London hosts Seonaid Beckwith (https://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/), Noel Andrews (https://jobrack.eu/), and John Ainsworth (https://datadrivenmarketing.co/) about how they pulled off one of the best all-time DC events in London last month. They also give their thoughts in response to a listener's email: should you optimize for revenue growth, profit growth, or both? Dan and Ian share frameworks for thinking about this and how they think about revenue and profit in their business. Plus, stick around til the end for a first-timer's guide on how to max out your DCBKK experience if you're going (or thinking about going) for the first time. Mads Singers talks with Jason Barnard about building a team rather than just a group of coworkers. Mads has more than 10 years of experience in Fortune 500 companies such as Xerox and IBM and more than 8 years of experience coaching and consulting online entrepreneurs in management and outsourcing. He has also spoken at many major events such as CMSEO, TiECon, DCBKK & DMSS Bali, SEO Spring Training, 7 Figure Seller Summit and the Survive and Thrive Ecommerce Summit. Mads, who currently owns and manages 4 companies and employs more than 100 people, does not just talk the talk, he walks the walk. Mads is not only a management expert, but also an expert in growing and scaling an online business. He is one of the industry experts on the DISC method, which is a cornerstone of his management philosophy, and he shares his knowledge through the Effective Management Mastery course and community. Achieving attainable business goals requires a group of people working together as a team. Communication, trust, ownership and responsibilities are critical in this process. Building a team can be difficult without a team manager who has the necessary team management skills. It is also important to consider what type of team manager a team needs. In this wonderful episode, the rather brilliant Mads Singers gives wonderful insights into the value of delegating responsibility, how to recognise people with team management skills, and how to deal with someone who is afraid to step up to a higher position and take responsibility. The highlight of the episode is how to effectively build a team that works together to achieve maximum productivity and groovy results. As always, the show ends with passing the baton… Mads passes the virtual baton to next week's absolutely delightful guest, Tatiana Bonneau. The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
The ‘post-COVID' location independent summer is beginning. We're seeing more and more posts in the DC forum that begin: ‘Who's in Medellin this month?', ‘Anyone in Poland or the Balkans'. Traveling and navigating new cities, and regions is very much the theme of today's show, which is a discussion for those thinking of visiting Bangkok, and Thailand in general, later in the year. And, of course, we're hugely excited for our first DCBKK event in three years, coming in October. With that in mind we've asked Kyla Gardner and Jesse Schoberg - both of whom have lived in Bangkok, and other places in Thailand, and attended a fair few DCBKKs - to share their thoughts. We'll cover: where to stay in Bangkok for a great vibe and delicious food, where to consider going after DCBKK, how to manage your time around events like DCBKK, and much more: “I don't know whether to advise people to just accept that you really just have to go really hard, you're not going to sleep, you're going to be exhausted but it's going to be worth it. Or advise them to try to take some power naps … it is just so stimulating, so much fun.”

On today's show Dan and Ian are reaching into the mailbag to reflect on some topics that listeners have asked about. These include an update on the incredible response to our upcoming DCBKK, things to consider when thinking about business models, and how to manage your net worth without hurting your brain: “I have been guilty in the past of overcomplicating my financial process with too many credit cards, too many bank accounts, too many clever tax manoeuvres, and I would have been much better off to keep it super, super simple'.
The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
Longtime listeners know that this is typically the time of year that we host DC BKK, our annual Dynamite Circle event in Bangkok. Each year, hundreds of entrepreneurs flock to the capital city of Thailand for the chance to meet and share ideas with like-minded people from across the globe. This has always been sort of a magical time for so many of us in the community, and to say that we are disappointed that we can't take part in it this year would be a huge understatement. It has become something of a tradition that our good friend Jeff Pecaro sits down with us after the event to crack open a beer and talk shop. Jeff is an incredibly talented copywriter and the founder of MostlyStories.com. He is also the man behind the content at most of our in-person events. This year, Jeff is joining us virtually on the podcast to commiserate and share some of our favorite memories, thoughts, and insights into the history of DCBKK.

Unfortunately, so many companies are great at training everything except for management skills. Today I will talk specifically about delegation because that's somewhere a lot of people struggle.2:46Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Mads: Well, I work 80hrs a week or I spend working all my time in the business. Most people work too many hours, they work in the business. They're aren't effectively growing the business.3:23What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Mads and his solution: There's quite a few, but I will hold in to a specific one today. This is particularly in the online world where people always been told to build a process, write it down, and then take that task and give it to someone. Fundamentally the problem is, when you delegate task, instead of delegating responsibility, you take away ownership. And that leads to light of results, and a light of ability of effective delegation.4:19Mads' Valuable Free Action (VFA): The difference between delegating responsibility and delegating a task, instead of telling someone do this thing this way, you basically talk to them and say here's the area of responsibility I need help with. Here is our process of what we do today, however, you're a smart guy/girl, I want you to own this thing. And then the most important aspect of giving people responsibility is to set clear deliverable, set clear outcomes. The problem when you delegate task is you tell them how many times the task have to be done, but that's not an outcome. When you delegate outcome, you look at what is the result of the person doing this work. And when you start delegating responsibility rather than task, you fundamentally grow your staffs much better and much faster.5:58Mads' Valuable Free Resource (VFR): The free resource that I want to share is the free webinar that I want to share called Madsingers.com and it focuses a lot on delegation, recruitment and so on. But that's really a great place to get started if you really want to step up your game and improve your management skills and get ready to grow your business.7:00How do you grow your staffs effectively? It ties in with delegation again. One secret, for a business owner stand point, if you look at those business owners, if you look at their Skype or their Slack, they're always blinking with questions. One thing you need to learn, is never answer questions. If people ask you a question, you want them to answer it. So, the way you answer question, is basically ask them a question back. Such as what do you see the options being?

It ties in with delegation again. One secret, for a business owner stand point, if you look at those business owners, if you look at their Skype or their Slack, they're always blinking with questions. One thing you need to learn, is never answer questions. If people ask you a question, you want them to answer it. So, the way you answer question, is basically ask them a question back. Such as what do you see the options being?
Today on the podcast I am joined by Dan Andrews, the host of the Tropical MBA podcast and cofounder of the Dynamite Circle and Dynamite Jobs. I've been listening to Dan and his cohost Ian on their podcast for years, basically since I became interested in online business so I was very excited for this interview and I gotta be honest guys it did not disappoint. Dan and his partner Ian have been running online businesses for more than 10 years, starting out back when hiring freelancers online wasn't as easy as pulling up Upwork. Since then they grown and sold several business, one for over 7 figures, and have started the hugely popular online forum Dynamite Circle which serves to connect successful online business owners. Through their forum they also host DCBKK, an annual event in Bangkok that is frequented by entrepreneurs in the know. Most recently Dan and Ian have launched Dynamite Jobs, a job board for people looking for work opportunities with remote first bootstrapped companies, many of them run by members of their forum. In this interview Dan and I discussed how they got started in online business, why they decided to head over to South East Asia in search of opportunities, where the idea for the Tropical MBA came from, and why Dan regrets selling their business despite the 7 figure exit. We dove into so many topics during this conversation that I honestly can't list out here but what I can say is that Dan did not hold back and really opened up about his experience running online businesses for more than a decade. I really enjoyed recording this episode and I think you guys will enjoy listening to it. If you are digging this podcast please leave a review on iTunes and let me know what you think.
Why is it that some people are destined for success while others will never fulfill their full potential? What sets apart those that “make it” from those that never really make any money from their business ideas? I recently attended the annual DCBKK conference in Bangkok, Thailand. This is a gathering of internet entrepreneurs from all over the world who come together to mastermind, connect, and learn about how to grow their businesses. While there were many entrepreneurial takeaways, what stood out to me were the things that differentiated those who had “succeeded” (in their sense of the term) from those who were still trying to make it work. In today's episode, I share 3 things that “successful” entrepreneurs do, that others are unwilling or unable to implement. If you can honestly say that you do all 3 of these things, and you're still struggling to move the needle, then reach out to me! I'm sure that with some outside perspective a plan can be put in place. I'm offering free 30-minute strategy sessions to the first 10 people who sign up here. The Tropical MBA Podcast - Entrepreneurship, Travel, and Lifestyle
http://www.tropicalmba.com/dcbkk2017/ Today Dan and Ian are going to be talking about their biggest weekend of the year. They are fresh off the heels of DCBKK, the annual event that they host in Bangkok for members of The Dynamite Circle. Hundreds of entrepreneurs, many of whom are listeners of this show, migrate to Southeast Asia each year to attend. They do so with the intention of focusing their time and energy on improving their businesses. On this week's episode, our hosts will be sharing their five biggest takeaways from this year's conference. You'll also hear them talk about what makes a profitable event and how they are planning on ramping up their events for 2018.
It might not be what you think!
The video I refrence that looks at examples is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWEvPy-D9oI At the Dynamite Circle' DCBKK event in Bangkok I went to a UI and UX meetup for increasing conversions. UI and UX stand for User Interface and User Experience... It is all about the look and design of the site (or app, or whatever) and is more about the art side of things... Not exactly something I'm generally savvy about, to be honest. Now, I'm all about increasing conversions and figure it is great to understand more about the design side of things as I usually am focused more on copywriting. Then, the awesome presenter who covered several case studies and live tear-downs of attendees' sites, kept going back to the problems with the copy. From confusing copy to disorganized copy, every single site reviewed had more issues with copy than they did with design and layout. This was a huge 'Ah Ha' moment for me... You see, I am a firm believe in the 'form follows function' idea. The most important piece of a landing page or sales page is the function... Does it "Sell" the product or convert the user to a lead? If not, then who cares about the 'form'... And in fact, this world class UI and UX designer came to the same conclusing. Now, there does come a time when you can work on beautifying a site and adding the right kinds of visual styling to enhance a great page, but as she said... "Your first goal is to have a page that is clear, not confusing and not ugly" This was music to my ears! I'm not much of an artist and I don't always see the value in high dollar designers... But I have been known to geek out on copywriting for days at a time to get the messaging completely dialed to match the needs, wants and desires of the target market. So, as you are building your funnel (with the help from these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZWIF79cyPA&list=PL0sOKzn__yK35RrpdiI-5NMQ7gury5W9W remember that the most important thing is to get your messaging and your copy dialed in so that it compels your target market to take action. And this totally reinforces the ideas covered in the video I added up top about the best converting squeeze pages from internet marketing's greats. The Business Method Podcast: High-Performance & Entrepreneurship
Today listeners we are chatting with one of our main advisors here at The Entrepreneur House, Tal Gur. Tal just spent the past month of his life advising 17 attendees of The Entrepreneur House on business and life. He spent many hours working one-on-one with the attendees on the biggest problems they are facing in their business and how they can overcome them. I personally think he has done an outstanding job consulting for the attendees. We are going to chat today about what went on behind the scenes of The Entrepreneur House in Chiang Mai. How we worked hard to keep the momentum going for the attendees while enjoying their time in Thailand. We will touch on leadership, managing balance, the importance of goal setting, and why Tal gave us his time to advise for The Entrepreneur House. This I can say was not an easy job. There are literally hundreds of hours of work that goes on behind the scenes keeping a house going and keeping the attendees progressing towards their goals. Tal and I had many meetings and chats about where we could improve the experience of the house and what worked really well…. Tal's Bio: -Served in the Israeli army. -Worked and lived in over 50 countries. -In 2005, he made a conscious decision to pursue every big dream he had setting 100 Bucketlist goals, and achieving 90 of them as of today. -He has built a home for a family in Peru that lost their home in a mudslide. -He completed a 12,000 km motorcycle journey across Australia. -Trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. -Created an online business making over 6-figures passive income. If you are lucky enough to find him…and get a moment of his time I recommend you do…… “When people come for 30-Days, they bond better and there is a sense of trust. Through this sense of trust, better advice comes.” Tal Gur “There is no end to the amount of improvements you can do to your business.” Tal Gur “The most successful people in life are the givers.” Chiang Mai whispers ‘The Good Life!'. Nate Smith recently built an info product business in the music niche - at The8020Drummer.com - to high 4-figures monthly passive income. Now he's helping other entrepreneurs do the same. He's applied the Pareto Principle to marketing in a way that other didn't think was possible. Last year, at a conference called DCBKK, He listened to a speaker named Jake Puhl talk about mindset. If you're making less than 250k/year, he said, your problem is probably mindset. He started asking himself framing questions to reveal where he was on his own way. In the end, it all boiled down to assuming things were impossible just because he hadn't seen them succeed yet. He then went on journey, which initially, was not a profitable one, but succeeded in creating freedom for himself; here's his story. In This Episode: Transitioning from employee to full-time entrepreneur. The highs and lows of being an entrepreneur. What happens when cognitive dissidence occurs with you day job? Creating the entrepreneur mindset. Re-evaluating after your first product fails. Surveying your audience to find what they'll buy and how much they'll pay. Where to start out when writing copy. Dan and Ian got a chance to sit down with her after the conference to talk about how she has been able to start Edgar, an extremely successful social media tool, with little to no experience in tech.

http://www.tropicalmba.com/productlaunchlessons/ Today I posted our first ever public ticket offering to DCBKK. We've launched so many of these events now, and we've learned from a lot of our mistakes over the years. I wanted to take an episode to sort of walk through some of the lessons that we've learned in doing our product launches, and specifically doing event launches. I've invited Damian Thompson from SalesAbility.co on to the show to talk about the evolution of our DCBKK event. We are also going to be taking quite a bit of time to talk about what goes on at DCBKK, the types of people who come to the event, and what sets DCBKK apart from other conferences.
In episode 68, Joe and I sit down to discuss our recent travels and share some of the business takeaways we got from the Dynamite Circle event in Bangkok.

Dan and Ian are homeward bound. Ian just got back San Diego and Dan’s headed to Bali for November to write his first book. Both still coming down from the high and energy of DCBKK, they wanted to tackle a tough question on the real meaning of wealth and entrepreneurship. Everyone knows that society has certain scripts and most people blindly assume the numbers support those. Dan and Ian sit down to look at the facts of a 20 year trajectory for a professional job vs. an entrepreneur and then look at how they and their network got there.

We had a blast at the DCBKK conference over the weekend, but we’ve got more big plans lined up. The CEO-yeah is heading back to the good ole’ U.S. of A. and I’m heading up to Chiang Mai to do a little scouting and see if it could be worthy of being the next TMBA compound. Starting this week, I’m holding my feet to the fire and saying that all you weekend warriors will be getting a brand new episode of Tropical Talk Radio in your earbuds every Friday to keep you jammin’ on your business all weekend long. In this weeks episode, we get called out on our Modern Cat Furniture business by listener Shayna and invoke the “do as we say, not as we do” maxim. We reveal our 3 step process on how to know when it’s time to hire and the differences between what we do, small businesses, and startups.
