In a recent episode of “Success Leaves Clues,” hosted by Dustin Plantholt and sponsored by Root Wellness, listeners can expect an enthralling conversation with Benny Demus, the renowned DJ of Akon. Dustin Plantholt opens the episode with a focus on work ethic, preparation, and the exploration of mastering life's challenges. He then warmly welcomes Benny Demus, setting the stage for an insightful dialogue about Demus's career journey and insights. Benny Demus shares his experiences, starting with his early days as a DJ at the age of ten and his growth over the years. He emphasizes the significance of dedication to one's craft and the importance of continuous practice and readiness for future opportunities. The conversation then delves into Demus's views on excellence, where he underscores the vital role of work ethic both in and out of the workspace. Demus discusses how he surrounds himself with motivated individuals, avoiding negative influences that could impede his professional growth. The topic shifts to seeking wisdom and overcoming the barriers of pride to ask for help. Demus highlights the importance of being open to constructive criticism, a philosophy he applies both in his personal journey and professional endeavors. A significant part of the episode is dedicated to the Demus Foundation. Benny discusses its origins and its role in giving back to the community, particularly in the Virgin Islands. He details the foundation's initiatives, such as the kickball tournament during the Carnival in St. Thomas, which unites professionals and community members, and how the foundation supports local nonprofit organizations. Listeners will find Benny Demus's story to be a compelling narrative of personal growth, community service, and the pursuit of excellence.
Broken beat, or bruk, is intrinsically collaborative. Its London originators often recorded together, taking inspiration from jazz, hip-hop, deep house, drum & bass and Afrobeat. Because the genre was born of fusion, it brought together heads from all corners of the music spectrum—sound system purists to junglists to Latin Nuyorican aficionados—who each resonated with bruk's complex rhythms in their own ways. Ian Grant, AKA IG Culture, is an early pioneer of bruk, and his story underlines the style's synergetic nature. Starting out as an MC, he struck fame in the early '90s as one half of Dodge City Productions but quickly grew disillusioned with the major label business. After immersing himself in early George Duke records, Fela Kuti, Fuji music, The Headhunters and the like, he started experimenting in the studio. The jazz inspiration, plus his roots in reggae and background in hip-hop and acid jazz, led to his now-seminal, late '90s productions as New Sector Movements—widely considered as the starting point in bruk history. Since then, Grant has kept building infrastructure for the hybrid sound. Alongside Bugz in the Attic, Phil Asher, Dego of 4hero, Demus and Orin Walters, he cofounded the legendary CoOp party, which became a meeting place for diverse musical minds and enabled bruk to keep evolving. Grant remains deeply committed to co-creating, as seen by the Selectors Assemble artist collective he runs with Alex Phountzi (the two are also known as NameBrandSound), his releases with Psykhomantus as Shall I Bruk It, his Afrofuturist take on bruk as Likwid Continual Space Motion and various other projects. On his RA Podcast, the veteran artist presents a forward-thinking portrayal of bruk, adjacent styles that were directly inspired by it and other global club cuts. There are cerebral, jazzy cuts from his CoOp label, Nigerian cruise music, percussive UK garage, 2-step swing, dancehall dub and much more. This is Grant's world, where rhythmic and swung beats reign supreme. @ig-culture Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/897

The final week of our sermon on the New Testament book of Philemon called "Reset". Big Idea: Paul models substitutionary atonement for Philemon, a picture the Lord Jesus Himself modeled when He paid our debt on the cross. I. A Model of The Gospel's Tenets (vs. 17-20) v. 17 - “So if you consider me” - literally “if, therefore, me” Paul appeals to Philemon to change his view of Onesimus; to view him through a different lens. No longer is he a runaway slave. He is now a returning “beloved” brother (v. 16). Paul says treat him in the same manner that Philemon would treat his friend and mentor, Paul. Vs. 18-19 - Look at the words “charge” and “repay.” It's transactional. It's that simple. No emotion is needed. Paul says in Onesimus has wronged Philemon, stolen anything, damaged anything, Paul literally says he'll cover the bill. This is penal substitutionary atonement… We have a sin debt we can't pay. So, Jesus went to the Lord on our behalf and said, “Father, if they owe you anything, I will repay it.” v. 19b - “to say nothing of your owing me even your own self.” Let's unpack this. Paul isn't saying that Philemon owes Paul his life or soul. That, always and forever, belongs to Jesus. But, Paul did, most likely, share the gospel and disciple Philemon, so Paul seems to be asking for a little latitude on behalf of Onesimus. RC Sproul says this about grace, “It is impossible for anyone, anywhere, anytime to deserve grace. Grace by definition is undeserved. As soon as we talk about deserving something we are no longer talking about grace; we are talking about justice. Only justice can be deserved…God never “owes” grace….God reserves for Himself the supreme right of executive clemency.” MERCY - God withholding that which we do deserve (His wrath). (EPHESIANS 2:1-6) GRACE - God imputing that which we do NOT deserve (His forgiveness). (EPHESIANS 2:7-9) V. 20 - Philemon forgiving and reconciling with Onesimus would be a “refreshing” of Paul's spirit. When we forgive and reconcile, the Lord is refreshed. Also, the house church is refreshed to see a display of selflessness and unity. II. A Model of The Gospel's Triumph's (vs. 21-22) Vs. 21-22 - Valuable theology is found here. We see the correlation between knowing the scriptures, and doing what the scriptures command. Paul is confident that the grace he once showed Philemon can and will be replicated in his encounter with Onesimus. One day, Paul hoped to be released from to come back to Colossae and see how things turned out. V. 21 - Paul knew that Philemon probably just needed a little perspective, and that he would most likely go far beyond what Paul is asking. That kind of trust is somewhat scarce in our society these days. III. A Model of the Gospel's Testimony (vs. 23-25) You do know that people watch us, right? We profess to be Christians, and they want to see if we're willing to put our figurative (and sometimes literal) “money where our mouths are.” They want to know that we don't just preach the gospel, we give testimony to it! vs. 23-24 - These are names…and names mean things. These men are also watching to make sure Philemon lives the gospel he proclaims. Let's introduce you to these men (hat tip to my seminary president, Dr. Danny Akin, for the assist with these biographies): 1) Epaphras was from Colossae and certainly well known to Philemon (Col. 1:7-8; 4:12-13), but now he is imprisoned alongside Paul in Rome. Paul sees Epaphras as he sees himself, not as a prisoner of the Empire but as a prisoner “Christ Jesus.” He is where he is because he is captive to Christ. 2) Mark is John Mark, author of our 2nd Gospel. Formerly, like Onesimus, he had been useless (Acts 15:38), but now he was useful both to Paul and the Lord (see esp. 2 Tim. 4:11). 3) Aristarchus was a close associate of Paul possibly from Macedonia (Acts 19:29; 20:4). He had traveled with Paul to Rome (Acts 27:2). Colossians 4:10 calls him Paul's “fellow prisoner.” Tradition says he was martyred in Rome during the persecution under Nero (MacArthur, 230). 4) Demus is honorably mentioned here and in Colossians 4:14. However, 2 Timothy 4:11 informs us that he deserted Paul, “because he loved the present world.” 5) Luke is “the dearly loved physician” (Col. 4:14) who penned the 2 volume work Luke-Acts. Some believe he may also have written Hebrews. He traveled with Paul, helped care for him, and became a dear and faithful friend. He was the only person with Paul in the last days of his 2nd Roman imprisonment as he waited execution (2 Tim. 4:11). These men, then, stand with Paul on behalf of Onesimus. Paul knew they were faithful and trustworthy, and so did Philemon. Their “vote” in favor of Onesimus would have carried significant weight. As a matter of fact, these men are nearly an identical rendering of the greetings to the church at Colossae. Philemon knew these men. Their vouching for Onesimus would carry weight. v. 25 - I love how Paul ends here. He ends the way he began this letter…with Jesus.

“Was I shocked? No, because we know that people do it. 10 years later, am I happy? No. That took a lot of money away from me and a moment.” Jasmine Todd and Katelyn Hutchison speak with former U.S. 400m hurdle star Lashinda Demus just a few weeks after the news broke that Russia's Natalya Antyukh has been stripped of her results from July 2012 to June 2013, which includes the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Demus is now in line to be upgraded to gold. They get her reaction to that news but also go through her full career as one of the best 400m hurdles in history. She was a four-time world championship medalist and two-time Olympian. Now, she is a mother of four boys and is working in clinical research while also coaching at the high school level. Once Demus is officially upgraded, she will make history as the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the event and joins a small class that includes Dalilah Muhammad (2016) and Sydney McLaughlin (2021). This is her first interview since the news of the possible upgrade. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Last Night Chicago Bears 33, New England Patriots 14 Bears 33, Patriots 14 – Fields, Bears score 23 straight points, beat Pats 33-14 Justin Fields threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and ran for 82 yards and another score, and the Bears defense forced returning Patriots starter Mac Jones back to the bench to give Chicago a 33-14 victory over New England. In a matchup of QB’s from the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship game, Fields outperformed Jones, who led Alabama to victory over Fields’ Ohio State. Fields also outplayed Patriots rookie Bailey Zappe, who came on after Jones managed just two three-and-outs and an interception in his return after missing three games with a high ankle sprain. Zappe led the Pats to back-to-back touchdowns and a 14-10 lead. But Fields answered and the Bears (3-4) led 20-14 at the half. In the second half Chicago ran off 23 unanswered points. NFL – Colts bench injured QB Matt Ryan in favor of Sam Ehlinger The Indianapolis Colts are benching starting quarterback Matt Ryan and will start Sam Ehlinger in Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Coach Frank Reich says Ryan has a separated throwing shoulder though the injury was not the reason he was demoted. Ehlinger started his rookie season on injured reserve, but was promoted to the active roster in October 2021. He supplanted Super Bowl 52 MVP Nick Foles as No. 2 on the depth chart heading into Week 6. Ryan leads the NFL with nine interceptions and has fumbled 11 times this season. NFL – NFL looking into interaction between refs, Bucs WR Evans The NFL said it is looking into what transpired between two game officials and Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans in the tunnel of the stadium after the Buccaneers’ 21-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. A reporter captured a video of side judge Jeff Lamberth and line judge Tripp Sutter approaching Evans as he made his way toward the locker room. There is a short inaudible exchange with Evans, before he appears to write something on a slip of paper handed to him by the officials. A second video appears to show Evans writing on paper as Lamberth stood next to him. According to the CBA agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association game officials are not allowed to “ask players, coaches or any other team personnel for autographs or memorabilia.” NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Chicago Bulls 120, Boston Celtics 102 Philadelphia 76ers 120, Indiana Pacers 106 Bulls 120, Celtics 102 – DeRozan, Vucevic lead way as Bulls beat Celtics 120-102 DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points, Nikola Vucevic added 18 points and 23 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls wiped out a big early deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 120-102. The Bulls went from trailing by 19 in the first quarter with Jayson Tatum providing an early spark for Boston to leading by 16 near the end of the half. They then went on a big run after the lead dwindled to three early in the third and handed the Celtics their first loss after a 3-0 start. Ayo Dosunmu scored 22. Zach LaVine added 19 points, helping the Bulls stop a two-game skid and pick up their first win since the opener at Miami. Tatum scored 2 to lead Boston. Harbaugh said Monday it wasn’t the lack of a policy that caused a problem when the teams exchanged heated words at halftime of Michigan’s lopsided win over Penn State. NCAAMBKB – Nantz to call last Final Four in ’23, Eagle to take over Jim Nantz will step away from calling the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after next year and will be succeeded by Ian Eagle. CBS Sports confirmed the move on Monday night. It was first reported by the New York Post. Nantz has been a part of CBS’ coverage of the tournament since 1986. He was the studio host for five years before calling his first Final Four in 1991. The 63-year old Nantz will remain the lead voice of the network’s NFL coverage along with leading its golf team. CBS has The Masters and PGA Championship. MLB – Love ’em or hate ’em, Series-bound Astros keep on winning The Houston Astros are off to the World Series for the fourth time in six seasons. It’s a remarkable show of staying power for the franchise, particularly in a baseball era that includes a 12-team playoff gauntlet. Yet the dichotomy of this generation of Astros will probably never go away. The stench of the franchise’s 2017 cheating scandal still lingers. Only five players are left on the roster that were a part of that 2017 team. It’s a team many fans love to hate, but the days of the Astros being a postseason fixture don’t look like they’re ending any time soon. The Russian’s case means Lashinda Demus of the United States is set to be upgraded to the gold medal. Antyukh was already serving a four-year ban in a previous case judged by the Court or Arbitration for Sport last year. That stripped her results from 2013 to 2015. The new ruling based on historical evidence recovered from a Moscow testing laboratory database further disqualifies Antyukh from mid-July 2012. At age 39, Demus is in line to win an Olympic gold. Tennis – Pegula, Gauff 1st 2 US women in Top 4 since Serena, Venus Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are the first pair of U.S. women both in the top four spots of the WTA rankings since sisters Serena and Venus Williams were up there a dozen years ago.Pegula rose two places to a career-best No. 3 after winning the biggest title of her career at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico. Gauff, who lost in the quarterfinals at that tournament, moved up from No. 7 to No. 4.The last time two Americans were that high in the women’s tennis rankings was the week of Oct. 18, 2010, when Serena Williams was No. 2 and Venus Williams was No. 4. Olympics – Russian runner stripped of 2012 Olympics title for doping Ten years after the London Olympics, 400-meter hurdles champion Natalya Antyukh has been disqualified for doping.
In our text tonight, Paul offers encouragement to his young friend Timothy. He says if I can do it, so can you. Toward the end of the text, we learn about one who did not persevere and fell away. Demas is not a member of the crowd or an errand boy; he worked alongside Paul, preaching the gospel. Somewhere along the way, Demas’ story takes a turn. Something shifted in Demas, and his focus turned toward the things of the world. The bible does not tell us why Demus fell away. Maybe it was one big thing that changed his direction, but more likely, it was a series of small decisions and events that extinguished the fire he once had. Somewhere along the way, Demas forgot to buy the truth and sell it not. If we become too wrapped up in the work rather than the purpose of the work, we risk losing focus of the prize and falling away.

I was absolutely honoured to the have the one and only Doom Lord from Skindred, Mikey Demus on the show this week. Due to time constraints we didn't get to have too much time to talk, but we managed to talk about his current favourite pop songs, Redbeard FX and doing shows with Skindred during these times. __________________________________________ Links and stuff: Guitar Geeks Podcast Host Pedalboards of Doom Host ReampZone Artist EMG Pickups Artist https://linktr.ee/GuitarGeeksPodcast Www.instagram.com/TheCoronaMortis Www.emgpickups.com _____________________________________ Don't get left out of the conversation, head over to the PedalBoards Of Doom Facebook group, which is one of the largest guitar groups out there. Patrick valued Paul's opinion and as such sidelined the popularity garnered from the tape. After struggling with his musical identity for the next seven years , it was Patrick's son's mother, who in 2003, suggested that he record another Stir it up volume as this was who he Truly was . Heeding her advice Patrick came up with volume 4 “The Crucifixion of the Ghetto”. This was a blend of humor and social awareness that employed a balance of hardcore street smarts and undiluted intellect by collaborating the imitation of a foul mouthed Mutabaruka and a modified version of Ian Boyne; these two voices would represent both sides of the social divide. Patrick would again ask Paul to play famous Demus and join him as a duo he would call Twin of Twins. Though Patrick is the writer of the two ,his brother's input and opinion is vital to his creative process as paul would overtime grow more comfortable with this art.
In this episode of The Homestretch w/Adrian Durant our guest is 2011 World Champion and 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 400m hurdles, none other than Lashinda Demus. She is truly a track star and one of the best female hurdlers in American track and field history. Not only on the field but she is also a hero in real life. She had twin boys in 2007 and missed out on the 2008 Olympics, but she came back stronger, with the third-fastest time ever to become the 2011 World Champion Gold medalist. She didn't stop there; she went on and became the silver medalist in 2012 London Olympics and Bronze Medalist in 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia. In this interview with Lashinda Demus, she shares her life story and struggles to become an Olympic Silver Medalist. Where most people think that female athlete's career can't rise after having a family, she actually proved the opposite. Lashinda Demus also share her thoughts about being a mom and an elite athlete. We also ask Lashinda some questions about how twins rocked her running world and how she jumped the postpartum depression hurdle in her life. Thank you for listening!
