We've got a great show today with Dan Hess, the composer behind Pilotwings 64! It was released as a launch title for the N64 in 1996 by Paradigm Simulation and is the second in the series (Pilotwings, Pilotwings 64, Pilotwings Resort). Pilotwings 64 continues the tradition of a lightweight flight sim where you use a variety of flight tools like a hang glider, jet pack, gyrocopter to complete simple objectives, or just fly around more casually. Dan Hess is a composer, performer and sound designer with over 30 years experience. In addition to his work on Pilotwings 64, Dan wrote the music for F1 World Grand Prix for N64. During the development of Pilotwings, Dan was the in-house composer for Paradigm Simulations / Entertainment. Dan plays a mean keyboard and has been performing since he was a teen, with the likes of Second Self and Skeleton Crew. Dan continues to work in tech, and is engaged in a number of side projects like recreating a lot of the Pilotwings 64 soundtrack for donors to his Patreon. Over the course of the show, Dan also shares a number of tracks related to his time in VGM, some of which he uploads to YouTube. Also guest hosting with us is Ian Cowell, a guitarist and VGM musician who grew up with the N64 and loved Pilotwings 64 enough to put out a cover of Birdman, which we use to close out the show. My guest today is Jay Tooke an Award-winning, Canadian born producer, songwriter, and musician who moved to Nashville back in 2012. Having gotten his start as a working musician at the age of 17 some of his earliest memories are of plunking out melodies by ear on the family's piano, but it was the intro to Dire Straits “Money for Nothing” that lit a fire in his soul for the drums. Not long after he started a love affair with the guitar and from then on, his sights were set on a career in music. During his 26 year career, he has toured all over the world with a range of artists from Canada and the US, and has produced records that have garnered critical and commercial success in Australia, New Zealand, Germany as well as Canada and the US. His philosophy behind making records has always been about helping the artist find their own voice in the studio. It's never about forcing ideas or making the record he wants to make. It's a collaboration between producer and artist to find the truest form of the song. Allowing the material to become the best version of itself through exploration and experimentation. Steve Barron started in films as a camera assistant on epic productions such as Richard Donner’s ‘Superman’, Richard Attenborough’s ‘A Bridge Too Far’ and Ridley Scott’s ‘The Duellist’s’. He began directing music videos in the early eighties for The Jam, Human League, and Adam & the Ants, his work helping to inspire the formation of MTV. In 1982 he conceived and directed the award winning ‘Billie-Jean’ – the first single of Michael Jackson’s incredible ‘Thriller’ album. More seminal videos followed. Dire Straits’ ‘Money for Nothing’ won Best Video at the 1986 MTV Awards and A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’ was awarded Best Director. Við heyrðum í Guðmundi Ögmundssyni, þjóðgarðsverði í Vatnajökulsþjóðgarði, sem frá árinu 2012 hefur tekið árlega ljósmynd af Skaftafellsjökli frá sama sjónarhorni og sýna myndirnar vel hversu mjög jökullinn hefur hopað. Myndirnar eru sláandi og segja mikla sögu um hversu hratt jöklar á íslandi bráðna. Fréttaskýringaþátturinn Kveikur fjallaði á dögunum um íslensk smálánafyrirtækin sem í raun eru í eigu skúffufyrirtækis í Danmörku þótt augljóst sé að starseminni er ætlað að þjóna íslenskum markaði. Hákon Stefánsson, frá Creditinfo Group, kom til okkar og ræddi smálánafyrirtækin en hann var jafnframt formaður starfshóps um endurskoðun á starfsumhverfi smálánafyritækja á Íslandi. Fyrsta æfing sviðslistahópsins Hatara fór fram í Expó höllinni í Tel Aviv í gær. Í framhaldi af æfingunni var blaðamannafundur þar sem Hatari setti sín mál á dagskrá eins og sagt var frá í kvöldfréttum RÚV. Björg Magnúsdóttir er á staðnum og hún ræddi við Felix Bergsson fararstjóra íslenska hópsins og búningameistara Hatara Karen Briem og Andra Unnarsson. Oddný Harðardóttir, formaður þingflokks Samfylkingar, vakti athygli á því á þingi fyrir helgi að færeyskir útgerðarmenn bjóða mun hærri upphæðir í fiskinn í gegnum útboð en íslenskir útgerðarmenn greiða í veiðgjöld. Hún kallar eftir skýringum á þessu og fullyrðir að munurinn á makríl sé til að mynda þrítugfaldur. It's time to wrap up Step 5: Selling the Story. We finish the discussion by talking about how to get funding, when the budget monkeys have told you no. Basically we have to take a "grass roots funding" approach to go to the business leaders directly, make the case, and get the funding we need. It's kind of like selling cookies door to door. We have to be persistent and make the case as to why it would be a good purchase.This requires us to broaden our skills and likely move out of our comfort zone quite a bit. It's uncomfortable, but it's a good thing. Just remember to focus on the "customer" issues, and that the Reasons to Secure. The business leaders will respond to that. Ultimately you may not get the funding you need, but you won't go down like a whimpering puppy.
