His observations on the number of cats on the island is a perfect springboard in introducing my next month's guest: Dr. Jean-Denis Vigne, esteemed paleozoologist and Emeritus Director of Research at the Natural History Museum in Paris. Welcome back, friends! Apologies for the brief delay in getting this episode out. We're now happily back on track and super stoked for what we have coming up—starting with today's episode. My guest is Dr. Michael Tomasello, a voraciously interdisciplinary thinker, an incredibly productive scientist, and a pioneer in the systematic comparison of chimpanzee and human capacities. Mike is a Distinguished Professor in the department of Psychology & Neuroscience at Duke University, where also holds appointments in Evolutionary Anthropology, Philosophy, and Linguistics. He is the author of growing list of influential books, including the recent Becoming Human: A Theory of Ontogeny and a new book coming out this fall titled The Evolution of Agency. In this conversation, Mike and I talk about how he came to study both children and chimpanzees. We discuss the challenges of working with each of these groups—and the challenges of comparing them. We talk about some of the key concepts that have figured prominently in Mike's work over the years—like joint attention and false belief—and well as some of the concepts he's been elaborating more recently—including norms, roles, and agency. We also discuss Vygotsky and Piaget; how humans got started down the path toward intense interdependence and cooperation; and what Mike thinks he got wrong earlier in his career. Lots in here, folks—let's just get to it. On to my conversation with Dr. Michael Tomasello. Enjoy!   A transcript of this episode will be available soon.   Notes and links 3:30 – Early in his career, Dr. Tomasello was affiliated with the storied Yerkes Primate Center. 5:00 – Major works by Lev Vygotsky (in translation) include Mind in Society and Thought and Language. 7:00 – A video about some of the early work of Wolfgang Kohler. 10:30 – Dr. Tomasello is the Emeritus Director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. 17:00 – A chapter outlining some key results of “looking time” (or “preferential-looking”) experiments in developmental psychology. 21:00 – A recent article by Cathal O'Madagain and Dr. Tomasello about “joint attention to mental content.” 25:00 – A paper by Holger Diessel on demonstratives and joint attention. 25:00 – A video describing work that Dr. Tomasello and colleagues have carried out on chimpanzee theory of mind. This week we welcome Lew Harriman for a discussion about the new ASHRAE document "Damp Buildings, Human Health and HVAC Design". The new document is intended to provide clear guidance for consultants, building owners/managers and others on measuring and managing moisture in buildings. Lew Harriman was a contributor to the EPA guidance for Moisture Control in Buildings, the EPA’s Guidance for Air Cleaners and most recently the ASHRAE Special Publication titled: Damp Buildings, Human Health and HVAC Design. After college and a 5-yr stint in the US Air Force, Lew worked for a manufacturer of industrial dehumidification systems for 10 years, before beginning a second, 32-year career as a humidity control and building forensic consultant. He operated his one-person firm under the name Mason-Grant until 2018, when he retired from active consulting and took the tongue-in-cheek title of “Emeritus Director of Research” because he says likes the sound of it. Still, he seems unable to off-load his attachment to ASHRAE volunteer work, since he continues to serve as a humidity and filtration consultant to ASHRAE's COVID-19 Epidemic Task Force.   This episode follows up our series we call the Moisture Mob Episodes. Substantial Matters: Life & Science of Parkinson’s

Problems with gait, or how you walk, are common in Parkinson’s disease (PD). These problems can include slow walking, shuffling, foot drags, less arm swinging than normal, and difficulty turning. One particularly troubling problem is freezing of gait, where a person with PD may be “stuck in their tracks” and feel that his or her feet are glued to the floor. The danger is that the person may fall forward or backward and incur injuries to the head, face, or wrists. Fortunately, there are effective remedies that can help mitigate gait disturbances, such as rehabilitation and exercise to improve one’s walking and balance. For some, the use of audible signals, such as key words, music or a metronome, to time and coordinate steps can be useful. Additionally, many will use visual cues, whether a marker secured the floor or even a laser pointer that projects a spot on the floor to use as a target to walk towards. In this episode, Dr. Jay Nutt, Emeritus Director of the Parkinson’s Center at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, discusses the problem of freezing of gait and offers remedies.

A new documentary “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Beyond the Mask” is being distributed to public television stations across the nation through the National Educational Telecommunications Association. The film highlights the life and legacy of the first African American to achieve national acclaim as a writer. The documentary is the result of a collaboration of three Ohio University faculty members: Dr. Judith Yaross Lee – Distinguished Professor in Communication Studies, Dr. Joseph Slade, Professor Emeritus in Media Arts and Studies and Emeritus Director of the Central Region Humanities Center and director, writer, producer and filmmaker Frederick Lewis. Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio to former slaves in 1872 and died at age 34 in 1906. He is often remembered for his poem “We Wear the Mask.” He also is honored because one of his lines from “Sympathy” became the title of Maya Angelou’s autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” He also wrote essays against Jim Crow laws and lynching and he became friends with many African-American leaders of his time. Although he was considered an intellectual, he wrote many of his poems and stories in “Plantation Dialect.” During his short life, in addition to his poetry and essays, he also composed songs for Broadway. As a youth, he was a neighbor and friends with Orville and Wilbur Wright in Dayton. They, in fact, printed Dunbar’s African American newspaper on their printing press. This documentary, eight years in the making, is a production of the Central Region Humanities Center and received support from Ohio Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
