Evangelicalism in Crisis, with Russell Moore

In this episode, Russell Moore, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, joins Mark Labberton to discuss the seismic political, moral, cultural, and spiritual crises facing American evangelicalism and how to respond. Reflecting on his own journey from the Southern Baptist Convention to his current role, Moore offers a candid and theologically rich diagnosis of a movement he describes as simultaneously fragmented, bored, and longing for renewal. Drawing parallels to historical awakenings and moments of global upheaval, Moore challenges listeners to consider what faithful Christian witness looks like in a time of digital saturation, political idolatry, and ecclesial disillusionment. Together, they wrestle with how evangelical institutions can resist becoming co-opted by market forces or ideologies, and instead return to the soul of the gospel—Jesus himself. Episode Highlights “We simply want Jesus as revealed in scripture.” (Russell Moore) “The good news is so clouded with distorted noise.” (Mark Labberton) “You mistakenly think that the solution has to be at the same scale as the problem.” (Wendall Berry, cited by Russell Moore) “Every person has to have an act of willful excommunication.” (Nicholas Carr, cited by Russell Moore) “Christian Nationalism is like ‘Bizarro Evangelicalism' … i f you can get external conformity, then you have righteousness.” (Russell Moore) Karl Barth on Christian disillusionment during World War I: “We  we want to preach the gospel as though nothing has happened.” … “ He's saying the church is being co-opted and used by forces alien to it. And there have to be people who are free from that to actually appeal to the genuine gospel and to remind people that God is God.” About Russell Moore Russell Moore is Editor in Chief of Christianity Today and is the author of Losing Our Religion: An Altar Call for Evangelical America (Penguin Random House). The Wall Street Journal has called Moore “vigorous, cheerful, and fiercely articulate.” He was named in 2017 to Politico Magazine's list of top fifty influence-makers in Washington, and has been profiled by such publications as the New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME Magazine, **and the New Yorker. An ordained Baptist minister, Moore served previously as President of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and, before that, as the chief academic officer and dean of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he also taught theology and ethics. Moore was a Fellow at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics and currently serves on the board of the Becket Law and as a Senior Fellow with the Trinity Forum in Washington, D.C. Show Notes Comparing Christianity Today and Fuller Theological Seminary Religious reconsiderations post-World War II “My grandfather was blown out of a tank by the Nazis in the Battle of the Bulge and came back. He went an unbeliever, came back really feeling his mortality and, and searching for answers. And ended up at a revival meeting where he came to know Christ.” A false choice presented to Christians: “You had this false choice being presented to Christians … you either go with an ever narrowing, ever quarrelsome sort of group of fundamentalists or you liberalize.” Billy Graham and Martin Luther King, Jr. The recent history of Evangelical Christianity A Movement in Crisis: What is the state of Evangelicalism in America? Revival preachers and entrepreneurialism: a religious, market-driven reality “Lifelessness and deadness” “ I can't think of a single church that has split over Christology. Steve Elkins, host of The National Intel Report on the Republic Broadcasting Network, interviews Tom Compton, one of the founding directors of We Hold These Truths (WHTT) about Zionized Christianity. WHTT has conducted over 200 vigils since 2002. Included in this interview is a discussion of how we started our vigils. Chuck Carlson, founder of WHTT decided to hold our first vigil five months before the second war on Iraq and Saddam Hussein as a response to a letter sent to President George Bush in October 2002 by Richard Land, President of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. The letter was signed by several prominent evangelical Christians and told President Bush that going to war against Iraq would be a "just" war by their interpretation of the Bible. Then, in 2017 when the SBC came to Phoenix for their annual meeting, we confronted Richard Land's successor, Dr. Russel Moore in an interesting exchange. For related podcasts, Click Here

Dr. Russell Moore and Dr. Mark Turman discuss Tim Keller's legacy, how to live in courage rather than fear, loneliness in standing for what's right, cynicism inside and outside the church, and why the wedding of politics to Christianity is so disastrous.    Show notes:    Dr. Russell Moore and Dr. Mark Turman discuss Tim Keller, his impact, and Dr. Moore's friendship with him (3:41). They discuss why Dr. Moore decided to write a book about courage, especially one that focuses on Elijah as an imperfect exemplar (10:39). They talk about signs of when you might be living according to fear instead of faith, and why it is God works most in the most uncertain moments (20:54). Dr. Moore explains why loneliness is sometimes necessary in pursuing courage, and why brave people often don't realize their own courage (29:43). Dr. Moore talks about Losing our Religion, a future book release of his that discusses cynicism inside and outside the church, especially in the case of politics and Christianity (47:55).   NOTE: We've launched our summer campaign. How can we help our children when they're facing anxiety? Today's guest, author Mary Holloman, shares insights and techniques for parents seeking to help their kids overcome fear. Mary Holloman is a contributing author for three books and has written for many online publications, including Her View From Home, Lifeway Research, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Charisma Magazine, and the Christian Broadcasting Network.   Mary explains how her motivation to write stems from her personal struggle with anxiety and the heartwarming experiences she had when reading with her children. The scripture in Matthew 16 inspired her to imagine a lily bent over in worry. She then recognized herself in the image of that anxious lily.    Holloman lists the following signs which may indicate anxiety in children: avoidance angry outbursts insomnia nightmares fidgeting or restlessness angst Mary advises parents to take an emotional and experiential inventory with their children if they recognize something seems "off."  We discuss how using a story as a framework for emotional discussion is disarming and can help kids identify what's in their own hearts. Mary encourages parents to employ and model healthy spiritual and emotional coping patterns to better equip their children with healthy spiritual and emotional practices. We discuss age-appropriate ways to talk about your feelings with children. Holloman advises parents to share how they're dealing with emotions in healthy ways. She notes the importance of praying about concerns with kids. Mary also encourages using low-intensity words to retain a sense of security. Holloman lists the following practical tips to help kids reduce anxiety symptoms: deep breathing visual charts and calendars side-by-side activities reflective listening with low-intensity words observing physical symptoms and asking about them using "I notice" statements reassuring scriptures (e.g. Psalm 23, Philippians 4:6-7, Romans 8) reminding kids that God is always good We discuss when and how to seek professional help for children. Why the Evangelical Movement Is in ‘Disarray' After Dobbs

With Roe now overturned, the evangelical movement has achieved one of its decades-old political priorities. But for many evangelicals, this isn't the moment of celebration and unity it may have first appeared to be. In the wake of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Russell Moore — a former president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the policy wing of the Southern Baptist Convention — described the state of evangelicalism as one of “disarray.” He argues that surface-level political allegiances paint over much deeper divisions within what has become an increasingly polarized movement. Understanding those divisions and what they portend for evangelicalism is deeply important, in large part because of the movement's immense power in American politics.Moore is the editor in chief of Christianity Today; the author of numerous books, including “Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel”; and one of the most visible leaders in the evangelical movement right now. But he has also voiced some of the most stinging criticism of the movement's current direction. He believes that evangelicals' embrace of Donald Trump was a mistake and that the way many evangelicals are approaching the culture wars — with what Moore calls a “siege mentality” — is toxic for the faith. He encourages his fellow evangelicals to embrace their role as a “moral minority” in America instead of desperately clinging to political and cultural power. “The shaking of American culture is no sign that God has given up on American Christianity,” he writes in “Onward.” “In fact, it may be a sign that God is rescuing American Christianity from itself.”So this is a conversation about how evangelicalism morphed into the political identity we know it as today, why so many evangelicals have come to embrace apocalyptic thinking about politics and where the movement goes next now that Roe has been overturned.Mentioned“The Supreme Court Needs to Be Less Central to American Public Life” by Russell MooreBook RecommendationsThe Weight of Glory by C.S. The title may cause some to question this episode or simply not listen to it. I chose the topic out of deep respect for Herbie's beliefs and because I know a lot of adopters are religious too. I was also curious as to where we'd go. I'm not a religious person but my own healing experience appears to be more spiritual than psychological. More magic than logic. That's why healing can't be set out in a step by step rational process. Rewiring our brains isn't like rewiring a plug. It's magical. I would suggest that from a religious perspective God is the source of the magic.Perhaps our kids trauma happened before they came into our homes. Perhaps it happens in trying to figure it out. Herb talks about how God's grace helps us heal. We take a deep and religious dive that's all about everyone's intrinsic value. Hugely profound, we explore humility and self awareness. The better we understand ourselves the better able we are to help our kids understand themselves. The clearer we can see our own worth, the more clearly we can point our kids towards their own worth. The worth that lies underneath the trauma waiting to be revealed. Here's a link to the last interview with Herbie https://thriving-adoptees.simplecast.com/episodes/herbie-newell-president-executive-director-pYbKfULKHerbie is the President & Executive Director of Lifeline Children's Services and its ministry arms. In our fall series LIFE & BREATH we are discussing what it means to advocate for humanity at the margins. Often advocacy requires courage as systems and structures that exclude and oppress can be intimidating. We fear we might lose our belonging in whatever tribe in which we seek safety, we fear standing alone. In Dr. Russell Moore's new book, The Courage To Stand, he challenges readers, from the life of Elijah, to reject cowardice and embrace gospel courage, not the bravado of our very anxious times, but the gospel courage that calls us to be crucified. Join us for this conversation with him. Dr. Russell Moore is a theologian, ethicist, and preacher. He is currently president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.

Sometimes, the best defense of the gospel isn’t a better argument but a better story. That’s why the previous episode about Josh Chatraw’s book Telling a Better Story and this episode with Russell Moore both focus on narrative apologetics. Also: after an episode in which your intrepid cohosts dredged the depths of some of the worst music ever produced in the history of humanity, this episode marks a return to aural greatness as Timothy looks at music from Paul McCartney, Petra, and Johnny Cash. The focus of the musical discussion this week is “He Went to Paris,” a 1973 tune from everyone’s favorite margarita-marinated beach strummer, the one and only Jimmy Buffett. The first few moments of the podcast threaten to devolve into total disaster, as Timothy is shocked to learn that the Pixar film Onward was not actually an adaptation of Russell Moore’s book Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel. (Önwärd would, however, have been a great name for a Christian metal band in the 1980s.) After learning in the previous episode that Josh Chatraw’s “inside out apologetics” has nothing to do with the Pixar film Inside Out, this new revelation from Russell Moore is almost too much for Timothy to handle. But Timothy is far more resilient than you might think, and he recovers from his shock just in time to discuss the narrative apologetics of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia that God utilized to guide a teenaged Russell Moore toward books like Mere Christianity. Along the way, Russ and Timothy end up reminiscing about how the Christian rock band Petra shaped their souls in the 1980s. The discussion then goes full circle with Jimmy Buffett’s “He Went to Paris,” back to the infinite yearning of every human heart for a satisfying story and to the apologetic truth that only the gospel can provide the narrative that humanity needs. The new cover art for this season was created by Dani Wallace (daniwallace.myportfolio.com).   This Week’s Guest Russell Moore is president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, the moral and public policy agency of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. Andrew T. Walker serves as the Director of Policy Studies for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. In this conversation we examine some of the core topics covered in his book God and the Transgender Debate, including: Culturally, how did we get here? What would Jesus say to the person experiencing gender dysphoria or identifying themselves as transgender? If Christians take the golden rule to heart, what does it look like to love your transgender neighbor? How can parents effectively engage their children in discussion on these topics? About the book:  What is transgender and gender fluidity? What does God's Word actually say about these issues? How can the gospel be good news for someone experiencing gender dysphoria? How should churches respond? This warm, faithful and careful book helps Christians understand what the Bible says about gender identity. It will help us to engage lovingly, thoughtfully and faithfully with one of the most explosive cultural discussions of our day. If you want to learn more and love better, and are open to considering what God has to say about sex and gender, this hope-filled book is for you. Includes a section looking at practical questions including: - Can someone be transgender and Christian? - Should I mind if people who are biologically the other sex are in my restroom?  - What should church leaders do if a congregation member asks for their child to be identified as the opposite gender?  - Is it true that Christian teaching is harmful and can lead to depression and higher suicide rates? - What about people who are born intersex? About the Author:  Andrew T. Walker serves as the Director of Policy Studies for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, the denomination's entity tasked with equipping churches to address moral, social, and ethical issues. In his role, he researches, speaks, and writes about human dignity, family stability, religious liberty, public theology, the relationship between church and state, and the moral principles that support civil society. He also examines how ethics inform public policy decisions and investigates the role that religion plays in American political culture. He helps the ERLC in areas related to academic initiatives, content production, issue advocacy, moral analysis, church equipping, and policy communication.
