In this episode we are looking at a sector where IT and tech innovation is taking efficiency to a whole new level - manufacturing.Manufacturing is in a precarious position as an industry. In the global north, growth is largely stagnant, according to those same UN statistics. Even in high-growth economies like China, it's slowing down. It's also notoriously inefficient. So, can tech help? And if so, what does that look like? Joining us to discuss is Dan Klein, an advisor on data and digital transformation with a special interest in the manufacturing sector. This is Technology Now, a weekly show from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Every week we look at a story that's been making headlines, take a look at the technology behind it, and explain why it matters to organizations and what we can learn from it. Bio: For those who love to experience music, look no further than Supertask. With deep roots in hip-hop and a focus towards immersion, Supertask creates sonic landscapes that dance between the intensity and stillness of the human consciousness. With a background in IT, Supertask frequently uses code and programming in his artistic vision, and the idea of infinity consumes his musical escapism offerings. A vision that his loyal community, the Dev Team, are directly involved in. Blending both analog and digital sound design, his unique approach has proven to be a driving force in the forward progression of electronic music. Through soundscapes that feel sentient, interactive live streams, and mind-bending visuals, Supertask is changing the way that we consume art. Supertask Links News: Single Release: 4/21 Collaboration EP With "Seeded Vision" comes out this summer. Show Takeaways: Brain-computer interfaces have the potential to revolutionize music creation, but there are challenges to overcome, such as data transfer and the role of musical knowledge. AI can be a useful tool in music production, from generating lyrics to providing information about plugins and audio files. Creativity is subjective, and the definition of creativity can vary from person to person. AI can be creative in its ability to generate music, but a sense of ownership and sentimental value may be lacking. Imperfections and randomness can add depth and authenticity to music production, and tools like Eurorack can provide unique sounds and experiences. Language has limitations in expressing emotions in music, and the complexity of defining concepts like holes and chairs highlights the challenges of categorization. Summary The first step of data pipelines is to move the data to a place where you can process and prepare it for its eventual purpose. Data transfer systems are a critical component of data enablement, and building them to support large volumes of information is a complex endeavor. Andrei Tserakhau has dedicated his careeer to this problem, and in this episode he shares the lessons that he has learned and the work he is doing on his most recent data transfer system at DoubleCloud. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Data Engineering Podcast, the show about modern data management Introducing RudderStack Profiles. RudderStack Profiles takes the SaaS guesswork and SQL grunt work out of building complete customer profiles so you can quickly ship actionable, enriched data to every downstream team. You specify the customer traits, then Profiles runs the joins and computations for you to create complete customer profiles. Get all of the details and try the new product today at dataengineeringpodcast.com/rudderstack (https://www.dataengineeringpodcast.com/rudderstack) You shouldn't have to throw away the database to build with fast-changing data. You should be able to keep the familiarity of SQL and the proven architecture of cloud warehouses, but swap the decades-old batch computation model for an efficient incremental engine to get complex queries that are always up-to-date. With Materialize, you can! It's the only true SQL streaming database built from the ground up to meet the needs of modern data products. Whether it's real-time dashboarding and analytics, personalization and segmentation or automation and alerting, Materialize gives you the ability to work with fresh, correct, and scalable results — all in a familiar SQL interface. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Andrei Tserakhau about operationalizing high bandwidth and low-latency change-data capture Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Your most recent project involves operationalizing a generalized data transfer service. What was the original problem that you were trying to solve? What were the shortcomings of other options in the ecosystem that led you to building a new system? What was the design of your initial solution to the problem? What are the sharp edges that you had to deal with to operate and use that initial implementation? What were the limitations of the system as you started to scale it? Can you describe the current architecture of your data transfer platform? What are the capabilities and constraints that you are optimizing for? As you move beyond the initial use case that started you down this path, what are the complexities involved in generalizing to add new functionality or integrate with additional platforms? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen your data transfer service used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on the data transfer system? When is DoubleCloud Data Transfer the wrong choice? In high-speed communications, very fast optical signals connect to your office or even your home. But these optical signals have not yet reached end-of-edge terminals such as personal computers and smart phones.Dr Hideaki Fukuzawa and Mr Takashi Kikukawa (TDK Corporation, Japan) show that it's possible to make these optical modulators with standard semiconductor industry processing, significantly lowering costs and creating more compact devices. Read the Research Features article: https://doi.org/10.26904/RF-148-4833963484 Read the original research: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10118728

Data portability is an important front in the war for an open internet. A few years ago, it seemed like some major movement was coming, with the joint announcement of the Data Transfer Project from Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter — but recently, news of any progress was running thin. That is, until now: the project has morphed into the nonprofit Data Transfer Initiative, with a real team led by new Executive Director (and returning podcast guest) Chris Riley, who joins us on this week's episode to discuss the push to liberate data and make it portable.
