It's perhaps no surprise that the late 1990s came to mind for Anup Singh when we recently asked him to share with us a finance career lesson or insight from his past. It seems that our CFO guests have become ever more reflective on the period of years preceding the dotcom implosion as they seek to help their companies navigate the murky economics of the post-COVID age. “This was a time when many firms ignored the core fundamentals of a successful business model,” recalls Singh, who at the time headed up FP&A for Excite@Home, an new entity formed following the $6.7 billion acquisition of Internet portal Excite by @Home networks. Not unlike its acquisitive parent company, Excite@Home had an appetite for growth. “We spent $1 billion to buy a company called Blue Mountain Arts, which had zero dollars in revenue, but the idea was to buy “eyeballs”—and the fundamentals just got away from us,” continues Singh, who in part was responsible for supplying analysts and investors external guidance as the environment for dotcom's grew ever more turbulent. “We were a casualty of the era,” notes Singh, who would become tasked with helping Excite@Home's bankers, lawyers, and accountants to initiate a financial restructuring of company. Apart from succumbing to the dotcom era's irrational business mind-set, Singh observes, Excite@Home also paid a price for a complex ownership structure that undermined its ability to achieve an alignment between its board and the company's strategy. Having witnessed up close this strategic alignment failure, Singh made sure that going forward in his career, he was keenly focused on management directives that allowed executive teams to achieve strategic alignment. Such agreement, Singh relates, needs to center on simple statements such as “Here are the three bets that we're going to place,” “Here are the products that we're going to build,” and “Here are the markets that we're going after.” This is a prescription upon which Singh has perhaps recently come to rely on more than once, as in his role as Illumio CFO he has sought to keep the software company's ambitious international expansion plans in check and in step with the uncertainty of the current economic environment. According to Singh, Illumio is now opting for “depth over breadth” and “doubling down” inside its largest overseas markets, rather than focusing on growing the overall number of countries within which it resides. Says Singh: “We're really trying to sharpen our focus and say, ‘Here are three markets on which we're going to bet in the coming year.” –Jack Sweeney

Charles Hudson is a Silicon Valley-based investor. He is part of a small percentage of Black Managing Partners of Venture funds here in the Bay Area. In this incredibly insightful interview, we talk to Charles about investing in Underrepresented Founders, Media, and his take on the fate of social media. We talk to Charles about his career in the Valley, which he has seen through multiple boom and bust cycles (from his time at Excite @ Home, to Google, to his early days as a venture investor). Charles provides his take on the events surrounding BLM and national recognition of racial inequality, and whether society can continue the momentum around some of the progress that's been made in the past several weeks. Charles provides his take on the media vs. tech issues that are coming to a head, and what they mean for both the tech industry and the media industry. His take is extremely objective, and anyone who cares about this issue should listen to his narrative. We talk to Charles about Clubhouse and what it means for social media. And whether social media platforms can ultimately grow if they build moderation tools early. Is the fate of social media bifurcated - where if you moderate too early you can't grow? And if you grow too much, it naturally turns into a cesspool? We talk about this topic extensively. If you're looking for a sober, level-headed explanation on hot topics, you don't want to miss this episode. One of the best we've ever recorded.
Please listen to this informative interview on electromagnetic field radiation (EMR)and how it can affect your health. This interview is with Peter Sullivan, the founder and CEO of Clear Light Ventures, Inc., and an environmental health founder who focuses on toxins and wireless safety. He has spent the last 15 years successfully recovering his two sons from autism and sensory issues. There are many health dangers involved with electromagnetic field radiation. It is known to shut down cells, their membranes, and their channels. Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) can easily penetrate brain tissue, and children absorb twice as much as an adult (Wang and Fugiwara, March 2003). The growth of beneficial gut bacteria is much slower in the presence of EMR. EMR is also a common reason for anxiety and sleep disruption. Please listen to these interviews to become fully informed about what electromagnetic field radiation can do to your health and how you can protect yourself and your family. Ways to reduce the harmful effects of electromagnetic field radiation Turn off your wifi at night to help reduce the EMF pollution to your body while you sleep. A stetzer meter can help gauge the EMF of the devices in your home. Cell chips and home device plug-ins can be purchased to help reduce the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation. For the best devices to protect yourself and your family from EMF’s please read here. It is pretty much inarguable that happy customers are a prerequisite for business success. And that’s true in health care as much as it’s true in every other industry—although in health care, sometimes the customer is also called a patient. Provider organizations like Cleveland Clinic are really walking the walk when it comes to creating amazing patient/customer experiences; so are other leading provider organizations. But in other segments of the health care industry, maybe they haven’t quite connected the dots between the idea of satisfying customer needs in the abstract and then what that actually looks like relative to a strategic approach. Let me give you an example—certainly not all pharmaceutical manufacturers: Here’s where key performance indicators, or KPIs, come in. Everything we do should really be derived from what customers need and expect. This could be considered our North Star. And that’s why creating KPIs that focus on how well we are doing delivering on great customer experiences over the long run delivers superior market returns and patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. My guest today on the podcast is Jon Skinner, who is an executive vice president at The Verde Group. Jon’s message is that your KPIs—if they are done right, in any case—should tell you if you are delivering on a set of customer expectations that are going to lead you to your vision of what success looks like. The Verde Group is a market research firm that specializes in quantifying the customer experience, in case you have not heard of them. I met Jon, by the way, at the PanAgora Pharma CX conference this past spring. By the way, in this interview, the acronym HCP is used. In case you are unfamiliar, HCP stands for health care professional and it can mean anyone from a physician to a nurse to any other advanced practice clinician. You can learn more at verdegroup.com. Jon Skinner is executive vice president with The Verde Group, a customer experience (CX) research consultancy focusing on the financial quantification of customer experiences. Jon works with market leaders across the pharmaceutical and health care space to help them identify the specific customer experiences most consequential to revenue and share growth, and then to develop CX improvements that sustainably grow customer value, build brand equity, and develop customer-centric cultures. Jon started his CX career at Digitas, where he led the Customer Management Group and advised clients on customer value management, loyalty strategy, and channel execution. His general management experience includes executive leadership positions at Excite@Home, Webroot Software, and New England Business Services. Jon holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. 02:48 Quantifying the customer experience and KPIs. 03:19 “What behavior change do you want to stimulate?” 03:29 Two overarching strategic outcomes. 04:41 How a pharma or health care entity correlates a CX improvement to a social outcome. 06:18 “You need to have a thoughtful portfolio.” 08:16 Examples of nonintuitive creativity. 11:53 Conspiring purposefully or by accident to create patient experiences. 14:42 Responding to changing conditions in real time. 15:14 “You can’t go wrong.” 16:06 KPIs are incredibly powerful and potentially damaging when tied to rewards. 16:28 Being thoughtful of compensation programs. 16:51 Why adherence is an important focus. 21:42 Experiences, quantifying experience, KPIs, changing customer experience, and achieving new outcomes. 22:33 “The best place to focus is on what’s going wrong.” You can learn more at verdegroup.com. #Quantifying the #customerexperience and #KPIs. How do you establish trust between between strangers on the Internet? Identity federation is one way to create a community of trust, but it relies on establishing the trust domains before the interaction. That doesn't work for many Internet transactions. Phil Windley interviews Professor Kent Seamons to discuss some specific ways of solving this problem. Kent Seamons, of BYU's Internet Security Research Lab, his students, and colleagues have been looking into how to negotiate trust on-the-fly. Phil and Kent talk about what trust negotiation is and how it works, how it differs from PKI, how credentials can be hidden in a trust negotiation, and the applications of these techniques in some specific industry verticals. Dr. Seamons is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Brigham Young University and is the Director of the Internet Security Research Lab. Prior to joining the faculty at BYU, Dr. Seamons was the Principal Investigator on several DARPA-sponsored research projects at the IBM Transarc Lab in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a co-inventor of two patent applications filed in 21 countries by IBM in the area of trust negotiation. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he conducted research in parallel I/O. Phil Windley is the host of Technometria and publisher of the popular blog by the same name. Technometria is a word coined in the 17th century to describe the study of the theory of the interrelation of the arts and sciences. Phil's goal with the Technometria blog and these podcasts is to explore, analyze, and understand the technologies that form the basis for enterprise computing and Internet applications. Phil is a professor in the Dept. of Computer Science at Brigham Young University where he teaches courses on digital identity, interoperability, web services, middleware, and programming languages. Phil is a frequent author and popular speaker on these topics. Prior to joining BYU, Phil spent two years as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the State of Utah, serving on the Governor Mike Leavitt's Cabinet and as a member of his Senior Staff. Before entering public service, Phil was Vice President for Product Development and Operations at Excite@Home and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of iMALL, Inc. an early leader in electronic commerce.
Anyone who uses a computer knows about Google and what a great tool it is. But very few know about the people behind the scenes – the engineers who build it, grow it, keep it running like a swiss watch and of course make it possible for Google to be one of the world’s most profitable businesses – on or off the internet. On today’s show Roger has conversations with two of the most senior engineering managers working at Google, who will tell us about their views of the Google phenomenon. First Roger talks with Jeff Huber. Jeff joined Google in 2003 and is the company's VP of Engineering. In this role, Jeff leads the technology development and innovation efforts for Google's advertising and monetization systems, including Google's AdWords and AdSense programs. Jeff brings more than 15 years of experience in large scale systems design and operation, online consumer product development, high volume transaction processing and engineering management. Prior to joining Google, Jeff was VP of Architecture & Systems Development at eBay where he championed the development of their product search infrastructure and expansion of the platform API program. Before eBay, Jeff was SVP of Engineering at Excite@Home, where he led consumer product and infrastructure development for the largest broadband service provider. Earlier in his career, he was a technology consultant with McKinsey & Company, and founded a software development startup. Jeff holds a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Master's Degree from Harvard University. Next Roger talks with Bill Coughran. Bill is Google's VP of Engineering for Systems Infrastructure where he is responsible for large-scale distributed computing programs underlying Google's products. Bill joined Google engineering in early 2003 where he began working with the web crawling, storage, and other systems teams. In addition, Bill is an author of more than 50 publications and has served on several editorial and conference boards, and technical advisory committees. He has also held adjunct and visiting positions at Stanford, the ETH, and Duke. Bill holds an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University as well as a BS and a MS in mathematics from Caltech. We know you’ll enjoy this ‘behind-the scenes’ look at one of the most interesting and important technology companies in the world today. As always, at Cullinane & Green we’re on the bleeding edge so you don’t have to be!
Download the MP3. Conventional wisdom tells us to go get a job out of college to learn the ropes, not to take on friends as business partners, and to accept defeat gracefully. Joe Kraus's business war stories are anything but conventional. Before graduating college, he convinced five of his friends to pass on blue chip job offers to start a business of their own. What would that business be? They didn't know yet, but met at a burrito shop to come up with something. The rest is Internet history. Joe was the founding president of Excite, one of the first well-known Internet search and content sites. After a merger, Joe left Excite@Home in 2000 and tried his hand at world travel, angel investing and politics. Unable to break the entrepreneurship addiction, Joe is now starting JotSpot, the first application-wiki company. More on his newest venture in the next show. Show notes:
