What happens when a devoted fan becomes your worst nightmare? Misery (1990) isn't just a psychological thriller — it's a terrifyingly accurate portrait of toxic fandom, long before the age of Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit backlash. In this episode of the Cinema Psychos Show, we dive deep into Rob Reiner's chilling adaptation of Stephen King's novel, breaking down why Annie Wilkes might be the most disturbingly realistic villain in horror movie history. We explore the real-life inspiration behind Misery, including King's own battle with addiction and fame, and how the film eerily predicted modern fan entitlement. From Kathy Bates' Oscar-winning performance to James Caan's quiet brilliance, this movie packs emotional trauma, sharp social commentary, and one of the most infamous horror scenes of all time — the hobbling. We also unpack how Misery fits into the legacy of Stephen King adaptations, why horror grounded in reality hits harder than supernatural scares, and what this film has to say about celebrity culture in 2024. Sometimes....Dead is Better This week, we are joined by returning guest, Anastasia Elfman to dig up the horror of Pet Sematary (1989), the unsettling Stephen King adaptation directed by Mary Lambert and starring Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Fred Gwynne, and a murderous toddler you'll never forget. They unpack what makes this film so brutally effective—especially for parents—while roasting Louis Creed for being the world's worst doctor, husband, and homeowner. From zombie cats to Wendigo lore and that unforgettable Zelda nightmare fuel, we're diving deep into grief, guilt, and gore. Plus, a few rants about embalming logistics, 80s parenting fails, and the movie's weirdly psychic side characters. The master of horror himself, Stephen King, steps behind the camera in 1986's “Maximum Overdrive.” A movie where the only thing that is frightening is the behind the scenes terror caused by an unhinged writer/director amidst one of their worst bouts of substance abuse. Master of Horror he may be, but King's tale of sentient electronics and trucks (but not cars) is one of the most boring entries into his catalog of terror. But what is it that makes this movie so terrible? Join us with special guest, Dustin Goes to Hollywood from The Silver Linings Playlist Podcast as we rev up our engines to tackle Maximum Overdrive! And back with us again is our good friend and collaborator, Anastasia Elfman! For those of us who were bullied in high school, Carrie hits home illustrating how cruel and how much of a nightmare high school can be for those of us who are different and can feel like a bit of a revenge fantasy for the “weird kid”. But what is it about this tale of teenaged angst that has led us to not only still talk about it after nearly 50 years but that has led to 2 remakes and a sequel. We'll find out today! What happens when Henry Selick, the Director of a Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and James and The Giant Peach decides to create a live action film? You get the insanity that is Monkeybone. This dark fantasy/gross out comedy stars Brendan Fraser, Bridgette Fonda, the voice of John Tutoro, and zombie Chris Kattan and when it released in 2001, it failed at the box office and marked the short end to Henry Selick's live action career. But does this movie deserve all the hate? And are there elements of Monkeybone that critics in 2001 just didn't get? We'll find out today with our special guest ANASTASIA ELFMAN returning to lend us a hand as we explore the dark world of Monkeybone. Is Captain America: Brave New World on track to be a $400 Million Dollar Hulk-Sized Flop or are the negative reviews a bit over blown? This week, we are gliding into another entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Where last year's Deadpool & Wolverine gave us a glimmer of hope in a MCU that embraces doing something a bit different, Captain America: Brave New World just feels like a harsh snap back to reality…and super hero fatigue. But does this movie deserve all the hate? And if so what can Marvel do going forward to try and stem the bleeding of money and gamma blood with each new entry; especially ahead of Thunderbolts, The Fantastic 4, and Avengers: Doomsday. It's Valentine's Day (well...a few days after) and what better way to tell someone you love them by scarring them for life at a 6th grade dance so that they grow up to be David Boreanaz with a bloody nose and make it their mission to murder you with hallmark greeting cards while wearing a cupid mask. This week, we are talking about Valentine from 2001. One of the last major slashers of the early 2000's that was playing off the coat tails of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Urban Legend. Valentine, (directed by Jamie Blanks of Urban Legend fame) tells the story of Paige, Dorthy, Lilly, and Kate who are stalked by a mysterious masked killer mask who could very well be a a specter from their past (sound a bit familiar). Starring Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, Jessica Cauffiel, Jessica Capshaw, Katherine Heigl, and David Boreanaz (at the height of his Angel/Buffy fame) this movie failed to land back in 2001 but does this movie truly suck or is it simply an underrated slasher way ahead of it's time? In honor of the passing of David Lynch, we are taking a very analytical look at two of David Lynch's masterpieces; Blue Velvet & Mulholland Drive. Blue Velvet (1986) starring Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rosselini, Laura Dern, and Dennis Hopper presents the dual worlds within the town of Lumberton and how the discovery of a human ear by Jeffery played by Kyle MacLachlan leads him down a dark path into the town's seedy underworld. Mulholland Drive (2001) starring Justin Theroux, Naomi Watts, and Laura Harring presents the dreamlike world of Hollywood and how a young starlet's search to help her new friend discover the cause of her amnesia leads down the path of a surrealist nightmare. We are a direct reflection of our thoughts, and this meditation is meant to help you determine HOW you will lead your day, giving you the opportunity to center yourself, align with your intentions, and radiate positivity into the world. With love, Jo Support the show
This immersive meditation will guide you through the powerful and healing style of breathwork, known as diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing. During this time, you will be guided through deep and intentional breaths, allowing your body and mind to relax, rest, and find peace and stillness within. Allowing your breath to become the bridge between your physical, and spiritual self - effortlessly immersing yourself deeply into the beauty, and the fullness, of the now. Support the show
Please read if you are new to EFT Tapping! Welcome to this EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping guided meditation. This tapping meditation is meant to help you release any negative thoughts or feelings about yourself, as you open yourself to unconditional love and acceptance from within. As we work through each point, we will be transforming existing thoughts and feelings about ourselves, into positive affirmations of self love, worthiness, and acceptance. If you are new to EFT tapping, I highly recommend a quick google search of "EFT Tapping for Beginners" - this will ensure your understanding so you can get the most out of the meditation! I will give a brief overview of the tapping points below. We will be going through each of these points twice during this meditation. You are free to use how ever many fingers/however long tapping you are comfortable with - below is just my preference - karate chop point (side of hand, under pinky finger, each hand individually) - in between your eyebrows (where your eyebrow hair ends, 2 fingers) - on the side of your eyes (slightly down from your temple, 2 fingers, each side) - under your eyes (2 fingers, each side) - under your nose (1 finger) - under your lip (the crease on your chin, 1 finger) - collar bone point (~1 inch down from the inner part of your collar bone, 4 fingers, both sides) - under arm (~4 inches down from your armpit, both sides individually) - top of head (4 fingers) Support the show
In this meditation, we will explore the incredible feelings of acceptance. Acceptance of the present moment, the body, the mind, emotions, thoughts, and challenges or imperfections in our life. This meditation is meant to help you find acceptance for everything that is. Releasing resistance and control, and training our minds to accept the beauty of the present moment as is given to us by the universe. Allow yourself this sacred and precious time to surrender, and learn the beautiful ways of acceptance. Support the show
This guided meditation was created to help guide your journey, of becoming the master of your mind. In this meditation, you'll focus on becoming fully present, tuning into your body, and breath, and changing your relationship with your thoughts. One of the first and most important steps in becoming the master of your mind is to understand that you are separate from your thoughts, and emotions. They do not define, or control you. This meditation serves to elevate your awareness of your thoughts, as you consciously work to reshape your perception of your thoughts, gently acknowledging, and releasing them, as they come and go, while remaining present and grounded in the moment; providing you with valuable tools that will encourage you to experience mindfulness in deeper and more meaningful ways. With love, Jo Support the show
This meditation will help you transform from existing to thriving. Whether you're seeking to reignite your creativity, overcome challenges, or simply find more joy in your everyday life, this meditation will offer you valuable time, encouraging you to reconnect within, and discovering your inner inspiration and guidance. Turn inwards, reflect, and reignite the spark that will fuel your passions and aspirations - reminding you that you are unstoppable, and nothing is impossible! This meditation will help you to rekindle the energy source that burns bright from within, fueling you with passion, energy, and inner power. With love, Jo Support the show

In this episode, we share our recent appearance on Self Love and Sweat with Lunden Souza, where explore the reasons why men find it hard to be vulnerable, and how society's expectations play a role in this. They discuss the detrimental effects of bottling up emotions and how opening up can lead to deeper connections with others. We also share practical tips and strategies for embracing vulnerability, such as starting small and seeking out supportive communities. They emphasize the importance of self-compassion and learning to be comfortable with discomfort. You can expect to come away from this episode with a better understanding of why vulnerability is crucial for men's well-being and practical tools for cultivating it in their own lives. This week we're talking about that pesky stress that seems to find us no matter what we do. You've had those days where it feels like 18 different things are hitting you at once. But it's the little things that pile up and make you want to lose your shit. Like when you can't seem to open a mayonnaise jar and end up throwing it across the room because 43-year-old men should be able to open a fucking jar. We've all been there, am I right? Zach has been under a lot of stress lately. But, he's been putting all the tips we talk about on the show into practice and has been able to keep his cool. When he feels like he's about to pop, he takes a break, lays down, and breathes. And let's be real, the last thing we need is for him to end up in jail for flipping the fuck out. So, join us this week as we talk about our experiences with stress and share strategies for managing it in our everyday lives. Because ain't nobody got time to be in fight or flight all the damn time. Key Takeaways: Let go of trying to control things that are beyond our control. Get to know yourself and have coping mechanisms in place such as breathing exercises, physical activities, and hobbies. Imagining yourself doing an activity can be just as effective as actually doing it. Having a supportive community to turn to can be incredibly helpful in managing stress and sharing thoughts and feelings. ***EXCLUSIVE BONUS CONTENT*** Resources: Get your Free One Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens!
