71. Foolish Pleasure & Jacinto Vasquez win the Derby

In the middle of the 70's horse racing was huge, and in the middle of it all in 1975 was Hall of Fame jockey Jacinto Vasquez who had the pleasure of riding some of the greatest horses of that era. And on May 12, 1975, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as he helped guide Foolish Pleasure to victory in the Kentucky Derby. The great horse had lost but once entering the race at Churchill Downs, yet some didn't think he could handle the distance. They were wrong. Vasquez knew he had the right horse at the right time to win his first Derby. The same held true 5 years later, when aboard Genuine Risk, he won it again. Only one of three fillies to win the Derby ever and the first since Regret in 1915! Despite being on the Kentucky Derby winner, Vasquez would get off of Foolish Pleasure to mount another great horse and another filly later that summer of '75 when he rode Ruffian in a match race against Pleasure. One of the greatest horses ever, Ruffian had been in 10 races since May of 1974… and won all of them… in fact, in all 10 races, she won wire-to-wire. That's right, she never trailed in a race. And in the 8 stakes races she entered, she set new stakes records in all 8 of them. But on that summer day at Belmont Park against Foolish Pleasure, Ruffian broke down, breaking two bones in her right foreleg. After surgery, the great thoroughbred came out of anesthesia and reacted poorly. She had to be put down. Vasquez and the racing world mourned the loss of one of the top 100 American horses of the 20th century. With over 5,200 wins, and a member of the United States Racing Hall of Fame since 1998, Vasquez is one of the all-time greats, but he tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast, that great horses make great jockeys and he would know. He also recounts the three times he beat Secretariat… the only jockey to ever beat the iconic horse three times. And he tells us why he was suspended from racing for a year and how to this day he vehemently denies the charges that were brought up against him. Vasquez is one of the all-time greats and at 81 years old, you can hear the competitive fire still burn inside of him when he recounts his rides on Pleasure, Ruffian and Forego or his battles with other great jockey's of his time such as Angel Cordero and Willie Shoemaker. It was a great time for fans of horse racing and Vasquez was one of the greats.  Listen and subscribe to the Past Our Prime podcast for weekly shows that look back at sports icons like Jacinto Vasquez wherever you get your podcasts. Forego the Inaugural Pomp and Ceremony

We traditionally mark the peaceful transfer of presidential power by holding the inauguration on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. A large temporary structure built for the occasion provides seating for not only the incoming and outgoing presidents and their families but virtually every other senior official and the entire Congress. In other words, it's a perfect target for anyone wanting to decapitate our government. In time of war – which is what we are in – risking, let alone effectively inviting, that peril is simply not acceptable. With tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers in this country, countless jihadists and domestic enemies all set on its destruction, it is, as a practical matter, impossible to guarantee the inauguration's safety. The national security and simple prudence demands that this spectacular public celebration of an America at peace be suspended until we once again are. This is Frank Gaffney.

THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

You see it.  The presenter publicly self-immolates. They might butcher the start, get lost in the weeds of their content or be put to the sword at the end in the Q&A.  They can't engage with their audience, are incoherent and quivering the whole time.  It is a train wreck on display. Reputations and credibility are flayed alive.  Here is the irony – they chose it to be like this. They made a series of poor decisions about this presentation and then reaped the whirlwind of total humiliation. Rehearsing the presentation takes time.  Time which could be devoted to adding massive content, multiple fonts and gaudy colours to the slides.  This is why failures fail.  They ignore logic and decide that practicing on their audience is much more efficient.  It is not terribly effective though. The long term damage from short term decisions is substantial when you thrust yourself into the public eye. If you don't have big brackets of time available, then just work on pieces at a time, over time.  That means start early, so there is no mad rush at the end.  I made a genius decision once to prepare my presentation on the flight from Osaka to Sydney.  No sleep and subsequently plenty of irritability upon landing made for a combustible cocktail. When someone in my audience had the temerity, the audacity, the gall to challenge my assertions in the presentation, it didn't go well. I vowed NEVER to try that exercise in efficiency ever again. Turning up just before kick off, to find there is some technical issue with your slides or the laptop or the audio is a life shortening experience.  Always make the time to go early.  I was giving a presentation to the Japan Market Expansion Competition and dutifully brought along my USB to plug into their laptop.  Their Microsoft environment didn't like my Mac presentation layout, so it changed the whole thing.  I arrived early and found myself sweating like a maniac, as I tried to fix every single slide before the start.  I finished with one minute to go, but I was a nervous wreck.  If I am not using my own laptop, I go even earlier now. First impressions start from the moment the organisers advertise the event and include elements of your bio.  People are forming biases and opinions about you, which they are going to size up against what they see in front of them.  Get there early, check the tech and then gracefully mingle with the punters.  Do your best to be charming.  Being an introvert, that is no easy task for me.  Do your best to schmooze people in the crowd before you start and build supporters in the room. Don't eat too much at the lunch or dinner prior to your talk.  Try instead to engage your table colleagues, again building rapport.  You can always eat later if you are starving.  When they call your name stride confidently and effortlessly to the stage.  Have zero interaction with the laptop – don't even touch it. Instead get straight into your opening.  You don't need any slides to begin with, so concentrate of creating a powerful and positive first impression.  Once you have done that, then you can look down at your laptop and start the slide deck rolling.  By the way, many balding presenters proffer a brilliant view of their sparse, patchy pate, as they lean forward over the laptop, fiddling with the machine.  Don't be one of them.  Start off with a power opening to grab attention. Remember, we are all self-focused and supremely interested in what happened to us this morning, what we need to do after the talk and what is coming up for us tomorrow. The speaker is competing with all of these high value items in the minds of the audience.  We need to supplant all of that inner-focus with our ideas, views, suggestions and recommendations.  Make sure to raise your voice tone from the get go, to set the energy level at the right point to carry through to the rest of the proceedings. It is very hard to start soft, then work your way up, so start strong then vary the tone from there. Keep your eyes on the crowd the whole time.  Read their faces.  Are they buying what you are saying, are they bored, are they surreptitiously or furtively looking at their phones under the table, are they nodding in agreement?  This is why, if some helpful venue flunkey turns the lights down, so that you are dominated by the screen, you should stop speaking immediately and ask for the lights to be brought back up.  In my experience, the moment those lights go down, a big proportion of a Japanese audience is lost, because they are sleeping.  It seems to be a bit like the rhythmic rocking of the trains here, that induces slumber.  Lights go down and off they go Pavlovian like, to the land of Nod.  I have seen that scenario play out a number of times here.  I find stopping speaking for about ten seconds interrupts the pattern and then resuming with a powerful burst of energy and voice volume wakes them right up again. Keep the main body to around three major points in a thirty minute talk.  Pile on the evidence though, because we are always speaking to a room full of sceptics recently force fed a diet of “fake news”.  Save the heavy detail for the Q& A, if you need it. Keep the points clear and accessible, pitched at the level of expertise of your audience.  Forego all the acronyms and jargon which appeal to the cognoscenti, if the audience are mere mortal ordinary punters. Don't get into arguments in the Q&A.  There may be hot questions hurled forth by provocateurs, self-aggrandising show offs, flouting their knowledge in front of the great unwashed.  Answer them to the best of your ability and then say sweetly, “let's continue this discussion after the talk.  Who has the next question” and move on, giving them no more eye contact or recognition for the rest of the talk. Always prepare a second close after the Q&A, so that you dominate the last item to linger in the memory banks of your audience.  The conversation triggered by a final question can be completely tangential or even totally unrelated to what you were there to talk about.  Don't let someone hijack your purpose. Seize back control of the point of this presentation, by unfurling your final close.  Thank the audience and then elegantly descend from the stage to mingle with the masses.  Leave everything on the podium and pack the gear up at the very end.

If you were playing competitive golf at my age, you knew who Rachel Heck was. She made it look easy- always has. Despite wrestling mind, body, and soul the last few years, she came back a few weeks ago ready to play. Her freshman season accolades alone fill up a page, and her appearances for professional and team events only brightened the lights. We forget that the people playing at the highest level have to make a choice – is this… it? Is this what I am going to dedicate my life to? Wright Thompson was a memorable guest on The Tie. Wright authored: “The Cost of These Dreams” - a book with a self explanatory title and some cold hard truth on sacrifice. Sometimes there are people who can recognize a trade from good to great before anyone else does. When I think of Rachel's story I think letting go of pro golf is “the cost of these dreams”. She's got a goal - golf is part of it, but only a part. Rachel will be right at home in the discomfort that awaits her after graduation. After all, she has chosen to put herself in the uncomfortable, pressurized environments time after time throughout her life. How her relationship with the game evolves will be a fun journey. No doubt, we will be seeing more darts and bombs from her on the amateur side. We hope you all enjoy today's episode! Representative George Santos has announced he will not seek re-election amidst a storm of ethics and criminal law violations. The House Ethics Committee's report is a damning account revealing Santos' misuse of campaign funds for personal extravagance, including spa visits and luxury shopping. This is more than a misstep, it's a systematic abuse of power and donor trust. Despite Santos dismissing it as a smear, the evidence is overwhelming. His actions represent a disturbing pattern of deceit, from fabricating loans to engaging in fraudulent business activities. The saga isn't just about Santos stepping down, it's a critical reminder of the need for moral integrity in the political system. As the House weighs his expulsion, a precedent-setting move for a non-convicted member, we're reminded of the grave responsibility of leaders. NASA is foregoing a launch opportunity Tuesday, Sept. 27, and preparing for rollback, while continuing to watch the weather forecast associated with Tropical Storm Ian. During a meeting Saturday morning, teams decided to stand down on preparing for the Tuesday launch date to allow them to configure systems for rolling back the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building. Engineers deferred a final decision about the roll to Sunday, Sept. 25, to allow for additional data gathering and analysis. If Artemis I managers elect to roll back, it would begin late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Earlier in the week, crews conducted a fuel tanking test to ensure a fuel leak, which scrubbed the first two launch attempts, had been resolved. On Friday, officials talked with reporters about the testing data. That teleconference audio is in this podcast. The new cryogenic loading procedures and ground automation were designed to transition temperature and pressures slowly during tanking to reduce the likelihood of leaks that could be caused by rapid changes in temperature or pressure. After encountering the leak early in the operation, teams further reduced loading pressures to troubleshoot the issue and proceed with the demonstration test. The pre-pressurization test enabled engineers to calibrate the settings used for conditioning the engines during the terminal count and validate timelines before launch day to reduce schedule risk during the countdown on launch day.   --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather/message

Should I forego therapy with someone who doesn't understand non-duality? Listener question

Following Clare's podcast on Tuesday about therapy and my subsequent post, some questions have come up about access to help for people in distress; I'd be grateful for any thoughts.Obviously, a person who is ignorant about nonduality (as I was) cannot discern whether or not the therapist they approach has this understanding. However, for a prospective or current client who knows about nonduality, such as the podcast questioner, is it better for them to forego the help of someone who doesn't come from this understanding? They might be likely to, but are we suggesting that any therapist without this understanding is to be avoided? Are there currently enough therapists working from this understanding to meet the need out there? It seems not, so then what?Does Life itself know what we're ready for (including coming across this conversation) and, if so, might what shows up be exactly right, nondual or not? Thanks to anyone who responds.

This Saturday's Saratoga racing program is so talent heavy, we brought in two of our favorite guest handicappers, to help us lift some winners from a card that features six consecutive Grade 1 races. Up first will Brooklyn's own Dan Illman, the DRF.com Handicapping Editor. Ed Meyer, a man who sleeps with a Daily Racing Form under his pillow, will handle the second segment. We are banking on his experience as an odds-maker and contest player to help grow our bankroll. The Midsummer Derby serves as the highlight of the star-studded afternoon. Champion Essential Quality has been tabbed as the pre-race odds-on favorite. His lone defeat in his eight-race career came in a troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby. The 1 1/4 mile Travers Stakes carries a hefty $1,250,000 purse. The Grade 1 races start in the 7th with the $500,000 Ballerina Handicap for fillies and mares and will feature Bob Baffert trainee Gamine, a brilliant speedster who drew the rail in the 7-furlong test. The following Forego for $600,000 is the seven-panel test for males. 3-year-olds will try the 7-furlong $500,000 Allen Jerkens' Memorial, highlighted by a rematch between Jackie's Warrior and Drain the Clock and the return of undefeated Life Is Good. The $600,000 1 1/8 mile Personal Ensign is highlighted by the presence of Letruska, who has experienced a $1 million season so far and comes to the race sporting three straight impressive wins. At Saratoga, there is no such thing as a sure thing, and the field of eight includes the accomplished multi-millionaire Swiss Skydiver, $1,218,740 earner Dunbar Road and Baffert-trained As Time Goes By, who brings Mike Smith to town for the race. Join John and his guests Dan and Ed for their insights into this spectacular day of racing.

* List of 25 Ways the Shudown (and a recession) Kills People: (See also our List of 25 rsr.org/covid-conspiracies.) Real Science Radio's Bob Enyart and Fred Williams list the ways that an economic downturn (from COVID-19 or otherwise) kills people... - Suicide increases (typically, its the 10th leading cause of death; 2nd cause of death for young adults; see Utah Highway Patrol's 80% increase in quarantine mental health interventions; 1000% surge in contacts with the Federal Emotional Support Hotline)- Stress, a major factor in increased disease, depression, and directly, death itself - Starvation as recession could horrifically increase the nine million annual deaths worldwide - Unemployment increases death rate by 50% from disease, accidents, etc. (so 36 million Americans apparently have dramatically increased death rates) - Charitable giving sharply declines during a recession - Forego routine healthcare/early diagnosis (TB to kill a million due to quarantine; 80k Americans to miss cancer diagnoses through June) - Forego known and needed medical treatment for known ailments (Hospitals losing $1.1 billion daily so laying off healthcare workers) - Forego needed vehicle maintenance increasing crashes - Forego recreational exertion and work-related physical exercise - Forego equipment maintenance increasing workplace accidents - Forego healthier foods to eat less nutritiously deteriorating health - Extended disappointment can lead to depression, then to death- Increasing family debt leads to increased stress (which kills, see above) - Increase in polluted water and air not tolerated by prosperous societies  - Farmers may produce less for various economic reasons - Manufacturers may cut corners producing less safe and satisfactory products - Increased crime including because less money is spent on security - Failed businesses bring enormous stress to owners and employees - Career employment is replaced by poorly paying jobs - Marriages fail leading to depression in adults and children - Raised by a mom alone is the primary indicator of kids ending up on welfare, as criminals, addicts, and early death - Increased loneliness from fewer family visits leading to death by broken heart  - Increased marijuana and other drug use (drug overdose deaths up 50% in 2020 in Franklin County, Ohio, for ex.) - Increased alcohol abuse - Increased abortion - Government leaders who don't understand godly principles of government introduce additional socialist measures which overtime lead to increased societal dysfunction, depression, and death. A few final points indicate the myriad ways the COVID shutdown kills and otherwise harms people. First, it has stopped elective surgery, much of which the patients themselves do not consider elective. Then, by the law of unintended consequences, in a surge in armed robberies, criminals are explioiting public mask wearing. And third, for every one person who dies as a consequence of the shutdown or any economic recession, many many more people grieve and have an increase in stress, unhappiness, failure, depression, disease, and divorce. * Call for Memes or Other Artwork: To help spread this list generally to improve the chance that this argument will reach governing officials, if you'd like to create a meme or other form of promotion for this page, please include something along the lines of: rsr.org/ways for 25 ways the shutdown kills people. Offsetting Factors: Recession consequences that may actually save lives include... - people, friends, families and church members relying more on one another - some social government services being curtailed - more kids liberated from public school as an unintentional return to single-income households gives a parent the opportunity to homeschool - the emotional fulfillment from increased economization - the economic benefit of an increase in preparedness for future hard times - reduced traffic - reduced respiratory illness from temporarily reduced traffic pollution - recognition of our dependence upon and need for Jesus may result not only in more conversions to Christ but in more godly wisdom to light and salt society. * Rejected Ways: We've rejected a decrease in blood donations and an increase in the orphaning of children and in domestic violence as factors on our above list. And please don't hesitate to email Bob@rsr.org to suggest additions or arguments for deletions from either of the above to lists. Thanks! * rsr.org/ways: You can easily access this page and share it on social media with its abbreviated URL rsr.org/ways. Our classic rsr.org/lists include today's program and our List of Ways to Reduce Crime. * This Above is Actually our List of Ways a Recession Kills People: (It's just that for now, shutdown communicates more clearly and of course a prolonged shutdown causes a recession, that is, an economic downturn.) The opposite of a nationally-improving standard of living is an increase in dying. Bob and Fred first ask the question, What makes an economy function? And answer that it is not money but its when we do as the Bible commands and "serve one another." Then they mention that so much economic calculation, including many of these ways that increase death, often happen "on the margins", to people and in circumstances where events could go one way or another, and a "tipping point" otherwise avoided is reached because of economic stress. * Thought Experiments: Items in the above list not sourced to actual scientific studies can be evaluated by simple thought experiments. As we discuss at rsr.org/math thought experiments are incredibly effective and have led to many amazing discoveries even in the hard sciences, including: - Virtually all of Albert Einstein's discoveries - The LaGrange point parking spaces for our space satellites discovered in 1736 - Paul Dirac's discovery of antimatter including its positrons - Max Planck's discovery of the Planck constant - Peter Higgs of the Higgs boson - James Clerk Maxwell's 1859 discovery that Saturn's rings were made of disconnected particles, a discovery not confirmed by observation until 122 years later by NASA's Voyager 2 mission. So on today's program Bob and Fred briefly discuss thought experiments, a methodology within economics and the broader science of praxeology, as strongly recommended by Ludwig von Mises in one of Bob's favorite books, Mises' magnum opus, Human Action. * Wuhan Flu: (See our main rsr.org/covid page.) We designed this map of China with the widely-recognized SARS-CoV-2 virus graphic superimposed to not let their communist government get away with the lies and cover-up that ignited the pandemic.

The opposite of an improved standard of living is an increase in the ways of dying. What makes an economy function is not money but when we do as the Bible commands, and "serve one another." As discussed below, like so much economic calculation, these increases in death often happen "on the margins", to people and in circumstances where events could go one way or another, and a "tipping point" otherwise avoided is reached because of economic stress. So here is BEL's list of ways that economic decline kills people: - Suicide increases (normally, the 10th leading cause of death; 2nd for young adults)- Stress, a major factor in increased disease, depression, and directly, death itself - Starvation as recession could horrifically increase the nine million annual deaths - Unemployment increases death rate by 50% from disease, accidents, etc. - Extended disappointment can lead to depression, then to death - Increase in polluted water and air not tolerated by prosperous societies  - Increasing family debt leads to increased stress (see above) - Forego needed medical treatment for known ailments - Forego routine healthcare/early diagnosis (TB to kill a million due to quarantine)  - Forego needed vehicle maintenance increasing crashes - Forego recreational exertion and work-related physical exercise - Forego equipment maintenance increasing workplace accidents - Forego healthier foods to eat less nutritiously deteriorating health - Farmers may produce less for various economic reasons - Manufacturers may cut corners producing less safe and satisfactory products - Increased crime including because less money is spent on security - Failed businesses bring enormous stress to owners and employees - Career employment is replaced by poorly paying jobs - Marriages fail leading to depression in adults and children - Raised by a mom alone is the primary indicator of kids ending up on welfare, as criminals, addicts, and early death - Increased loneliness from fewer family visits leading to death by broken heart  - Increased marijuana and other drug use - Increased alcohol abuse - Increased abortion - Government leaders who don't understand godly principles of government introduce additional socialist measures which overtime lead to increased societal dysfunction, depression, and death. (For example, mutations will give you bad legs long before you'd get good wings.) We get to debate Darwinists and atheists like Lawrence Krauss, AronRa, and Eugenie Scott. We easily take potshots from popular evolutionists like PZ Myers, Phil Plait, and Jerry Coyne. We're the home of the popular List Shows! And we interview the outstanding scientists who dare to challenge today's accepted creed that nothing created everything. This audio disk features all of the Real Science Radio episodes from 2018. * Transcript of Today's Program: Today, April 27th, 2020, as a public service for the COVID-19 pandemic brought to you by Crawford Broadcasting, we'll continue our presentation of how we got here, why now and never before such an extensive economic shut down, what are the relevant just principles of governance that governments should adhere to, where this global experience is headed. We've looked at the science and we've been rebutting a few conspiracy theories along the way to hopefully mitigate some misplaced anger. The Hannity Conspiracy Interpretation of China's Flights: One conspiracy we rebutted was the Shaun Hannity interpretation of what China was doing when they permitted international flights to continue. Countless conservatives think that this was part of China's intentional plan to infect the world. Here at RSR we have as strong a record, or greater, of condemning China, including for their own abortion holocaust, as does almost any other conservative or Christian outlet. Yet much of our last program strongly rebutted that air traffic conspiracy interpretation. We documented the dates, and showed that with the whole world on alert for the virus, and it spreading, and President Trump wisely shutting down flights to and from China, yet most of the rest of the world recklessly ignored his approach, and continued flying to China. Yes, they shut down their own domestic travel out of Wuhan. But they weren't forcing other countries to fly their. Each country evaluated their own level of risk. Based even just on the number of planes available in any fleet or nation, no airline or country, including China, could sustain continuing to send flights out of their country unless those same planes were first flying into their country. So the countries that planes were flying into, out of China, were the same countries that continued of their own decision making, and with some recklessness, to fly planes into China. And China's communist tyrant, Xi Jinping, did what tyrants do, in selfishness, incompetence, and hubris, took whatever benefits flew in on the incoming flights, and cared nothing for what harm flew out on the return flights. That's much different than the paranoid belief, generating even more anger, needlessly, than already exists, to claim that China was implementing an intentional plan of infecting the world. Wickedness and recklessness by themselves are not sufficient to convict someone of every suspicion, and God did say, Do not bear false witness against your neighbor. We began our Crawford-COVID series of programs interviewing brilliant scientists, if you missed any, they're archived for you online at rsr.org, to understand the virus and the disease. [rsr.org/michael-behe-covid, rsr.org/kevin-anderson-covid, rsr.org/james-tour-covid.] We heard from audience favorites like molecular biologist Kevin Anderson, and world renowned scientists Michael Behe, and James Tour discussing his nanoprobe device that, like a guided missile, seeks out pathogens, like a bacteria or even a virus, attaches, and drills into them at three million RPMs, three million revolutions per minute, to destroy them! It's stunning how human beings can use the brilliance that God gave us, to learn about His creation, and to some degree, as He encouraged us, to take control over it. Use of Thought Experiments: Now we moved on to what's called the soft sciences of economics, psychology, and as Ludwig von Mises called it, who's the former leader of the Austrian School of economics, praxeology, the study of Human Action, and he used the tool, the thought experiment. The hard sciences make great use of thought experiments. That's how Einstein made his discoveries; we park our space satellites far above Earth in what's called the LaGrange points which were discovered by thought experiments in 1736; Paul Dirac discovered antimatter, and positrons, before they were actually observed, Max Planck the Planck constant, Higgs the Higgs boson, in fact, James Clerk Maxwell, the father of the science of electromagnetic radiation, discovered in 1859, not with a telescope, but by his thoughts, that the rings of Saturn were not, as was supposed, solid nor a continuous liquid, but that they were made up of disconnected particles, a discovery not confirmed by observation until 122 years later by NASA's Voyager 2 mission. The National/Wealthy Family Epidemic Response: We applied von Mises encouragement of using thought experiments to figure out, why now, and why never before, for this extensive economic shut down. And we used an observation made by another Austrian conservative author, Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn in his work, Leftism Revisited, that some leaders have the capacity to view their own citizens as part of their own family. And so, just like a wealthy family would do almost anything in their power, even bankrupting themselves, if they thought a spreading disease was anything like, say Ebola, which killed about one out of every two people who got it. But, suppose this was a highly infectious disease, spreading rapidly. If a successful father thought that a spreading infection would likely kill one of his own children, or more, if a son or daughter happened to catch it, he of course would go to extreme lengths, especially if he had the financial wherewithal, to try to prevent that horror. Then think of nations, and their leaders, and to the time in world history, namely, today, when as compared to the past thousands of years, we have both a better understanding of the spread of pathogens, and we have vast wealth, compared to the past, available to governments. So, this shutdown has been coming at us for a long time. Why now, and never before? Because we can. That's why. How Economic Decline Kills People: The cure might be worse than the disease, and far more people may die from the shut down. Almost like a medically-induced coma, we have a medically-induced, actually, an intentionally, politically-induced, recession. And how bad might it get? The worldwide economy could get bad enough to kill more people than the disease kills, and that could be either with or without all this mitigation. A depression is worse than a recession, long considered a decline in real GDP of more than 10% in one year. GDP, that's gross domestic product; and no, that's not our public school graduating class, that's the value of all goods and services produced. The GDP. Economic forecasters, as Fortune Magazine points out, "are downgrading their predictions almost as fast as they can make them." For example, within just a few weeks, Goldman Sachs downgraded its second quarter GDP estimates from –2%, to –24% to –32%, and that's all within a few weeks. Annualized, that would qualify as a depression, except that our underlying productivity gains, wealth, diversification of the economy, and so on, could prevent anything like what we historically perceive as a depression from hitting us. But they do say, nothing is certain except death and taxes! But even death can be cheated, through Jesus Christ. So maybe the only certainty is that the government is likely to take more from you than it should. Ha! Economic decline, regardless of what you call it, kills people. How do people die from a drop in the standard of living? Well, of course it's called a standard of living, and the opposite of that is dying. Donald Trump unfortunately hasn't found a way to verbalize what he knows to be true, that when the economy faulters, people die. The most I've heard him get out of his mouth is: - suicide, and he mentioned only suicide on a number of occasions; perhaps in the last few days he's expanded on that. While suicide is not nearly the only way people die from an economic downturn, it is terribly serious. Under normal circumstances, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America, far higher than traffic fatalities, which doesn't even make the list. 47,000 people die of suicide each year in America, and for young adults, tragically, suicide is the number two cause of death, which is one of the reasons, not the main one, but one of the reasons why we oppose and despise those who seek to decriminalize and normalize suicide. So an increase in suicide, when a business fails, when a father can't figure out how to provide for his family, when a mom sees her children struggling, when a teenager goes further into depression because his life isn't working out how he or she had expected, those deaths are even more insufferable than COVID 19 deaths. I'll give one example, from Thailand. We just had a massive trilobite fossil donated to us here at RSR from a listener in Thailand. well, a Bangkok media outlet has reported that suicides have increased measurably from the lockdown there and they document one example, a man who joined a government protest, a 58-year old taxi driver Nam Jiamsupa, killed himself because he didn't have enough money to pay his next three months taxi lease, $555, and their mental health hotline has gone from 30 calls a month to 600. So Donald Trump is right, of course, suicide is a major result of economic difficulty, but that's only one manner of recession death. Oh, and by the way, what is the top cause of death in the U.S.? It used to be heart disease, at 650,000 a year, with cancer at #2, at 600,000 a year. And here at RSR we've predicted, based on our reporting on and interviews with leaders in the field of targeted antibody treatments, that cancer will drop by 2025 from the second to the fifth cause of death. That's an astounding prediction, and since we made it a couple years ago, it has been heading downward, thankfully. But right now, forget all that, because the #1 cause of death in America, right now, is COVID 19. Yes, COVID deaths have been overcounted, and that's been a problem for decades with many diseases, identifying the correct cause of death, and COVID deaths have been undercounted, as frequently happens also (esp. with home deaths, and as an example, a NY nursing home). That's not a conspiracy, and the two hopefully cancel out, and regardless, that number goes in the numerator of the fraction, and the vastly larger denominator, the number of cases, then helps us decide how deadly a particular infection can be. So, today, at about 2,000 COVID deaths per day, if that was annualized, and if this continued for another year or two, which it could, especially seeing that the virus has experienced 30 point mutations already, and they could make it even far more lethal than the flu-like, or twice-flu like fatality rate that the coronavirus has right now. But at 2k a day, if that became routine, that would be 700,000 deaths per year, but hopefully, we'll have nothing like that. So, an increase in death from an economic downturn, includes from suicide, which could bring it from tenth, as high as above the normal flu and pneumonia deaths of 55,000 per year, and that could disproportionately include children and young people.  Then, just like an increase in suicide, there is death from all the other ways that people die, only moreso. One large and lengthy study in Europe has shown that the rate of death increases by 50% for the unemployed as compared to for people who are working. And that includes increases in death rates from virtually all causes, disease, accidents, and so on. People are increasingly unhappy, over a lengthening period of time, and while some have inherent biochemical problems that need psychiatric care, the vast majority need God, and a healthy relationship with Him, becoming increasingly conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, as Paul urges us, becoming more Christ-like, and loving and serving others so much we hardly have time to notice our own twinges of unhappiness. When people can't afford better food, the eat cheaper food. When they can't afford medical care, or the hospitals are otherwise occupied, they forego normal healthcare that could have given an early diagnosis of a treatable disease. When farmers can't afford more productive seeds, and the right amount of irrigation, that use cheaper seeds and don't water their crops enough. When manufactures can't afford to use the best materials, they use cheaper materials. Someone is inclined to commit crime, and he sees corrupt opportunity in a store's reduced security measures. When a man's good business fails, he takes a job that barely sustains his loved ones. And much of this, like virtually all economic calculation, is on the margins. Someone who might not have come down with a disease, but the financial and emotion stress it brings, pushed her over the edge and now she's sick. A business was on the verge of being sustainable, but it fails. A marriage just might have survived, but the added stress results in divorce, and now three kids are growing up with only mom in the household, and that's the number one indicator for the kids eventually to commit crimes, go on welfare, use drugs, and otherwise ruin their lives, and even, die young. And, governmental leaders who don't know right from wrong, and who say things like, America will never be a socialist nation as long as I'm in charge, while handing out thousand dollar checks to everyone, and saddling the next generation with trillions of dollars of debt beyond even Obama deficit spending, and even those measures lead to eventual further downturn, and death. And when a global economy shrinks, short-sighted governments may further increase import tariffs, which primarily is a tax on their own people, again increasing the economic pain. You hit the buyers of Japanese cars with a 10% surcharge, or tariff, and then domestic manufacturers increase the price of their cars by 9%, 100% of which is paid for by the consumer. So the list goes on and on, of how people die from economic decline, and those deaths can be far more than from this SARS-CoV-2 virus, what we call the Wuhan Flu, because of the cover-up and other lies from the Chinese communists. But far more important than all that are the moral questions. And we'll get to them tomorrow. I was supposed to get to them today, but felt that I had to provide my bona fides, showing perhaps newer listeners that here at RSR, we carefully think through the science, and the current events, that we report on, and more importantly, that we do all this with a Christian biblical worldview. So tomorrow, does the government have the right to shut down an economy to fight an epidemic. There's a tremendous amount of anger out there, and it's become a right vs left thing. If Obama had been reigning right now, in office, just like with the H1N1 in 2009 when 60 million Americans were infected, and he shut down nothing, and over 12,000 died, the media couldn't care less and wouldn't have said "boo" against him, nor would they hardly criticize a single thing he did or didn't do if he were here today. And what proof do I have? Look at how they support the Democratic governor of New York, the most hard hit state in the nation, whether he says what the condemn Trump for saying, or does what they condemn Trump for doing, and even when Trump's right and he's wrong. Reality matters not for the fake news blinded by hatred. So because of the left's Trump derangement syndrome, there is an intense fight over whether to reopen, because the Democrats, the media, and millions on the left want to see the economy crash further to hurt Trump's chances of reelection. So the more they support the quarantine, the more conservative Christians are enraged. And from my vantage point, here atop the RSR Towers, overlooking the front range… Hmm. I can't see much careful and principled thinking on either side. The best some conservatives have done is to ask if this is constitutional, and I'm not especially interested in that. I want to know about right and wrong, and there are a hundred other nations that are quarantining. God's not going to other judge nations, or even us, on whether or not they violate, or we uphold, our constitution. He's going to judge us on whether we obey Him or not. Former NJ appeals court judge Andrew Napolitano, a Fox regular until he turned against Trump; we've interviewed him here on the air. He wrote two weeks ago that the only time that a government can interfere with a man's freedom is when he is convicted by a jury of a crime. Oh really? How about when the police arrest a mass murderer, and he's held for months, incarcerated until the trial. You mean Judge Napolitano couldn't think of that? So he provides a perfect example of the kind of sloppy thinking that I have seen conservatives engage in, to keep their anger up. So until tomorrow Lord-willing (if you'd like to share this Crawford-sponsored public service program with a friend, just go online to rsr.org) until tomorrow, this is Bob Enyart for my co-host Fred Williams and Real Science Radio! May God bless you.

Every year since 1959, the Freeman community has a festival of tasting, which they call the “Schmeckfest.” At the 43rd annual schmuck fest, the menu of traditional German foods that has had such universal appeal over the years will again be served. These foods have retained their popularity with guests from many states and several foreign countries. The dates for the Schmeckfest this year are March 29, 30th, and 31st. The musical “Secret Garden” will culminate the activities of the 43rd Schmeckfest.Francis Hodgson Burnett wrote the beloved children's story, “The Secret Garden.” It is the story of Mary Lennox, a young girl who comes from India to live with her uncle at Misselthwaite Manor and York Shire England following the death her parents from colora. At Misselthwaite, she is drawn to her aunt lilies garden, which has been neglected since she died in childbirth. Mary works and cares for the garden, and in the process, helps reconcile her uncle to his wife's death, brings her cousin Collin back to health, and finds both a new family and a sense of peace with her past. Why are certain parts of the mansion forbidden territory? What secrets lie hidden in the garden her uncle has locked up and most perplexing of all who or whatis behind that wailing Mary hears at night? I am certain that this will be a delightful musical. Each evening it will be performed at eight o'clock pm I always like to attend the Sunday matinee performance at 2pm, which will be on April 1. Recently, I saw a quaint old sundial engraved around the base were these words:With the kiss of the sun for pardon, and the sound of the birds from Earth. One is near God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth. As one may gaze at the old sundial, we may realize we could reclaim the secret garden for a new generation.Among the last words of the author of the novel, she wrote, “As long as you have a garden, you have a future and as long as you have a future, you are alive.”Food for thought: The Adventure of life is to learn the purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The opportunity of life is to serve. The secret of life is to dare. The spice of life is to befriend. The beauty of life is to give things to remember.May I always remember to encourage you find the time. Keep a promise. Forego a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Listen, think first. Love someone else. Laugh a little. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure and the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak God's love. The Daily Gratitude Minute

Today the day after Thanksgiving and is known as Black Friday here in the United States. Black Friday has been regarded as the beginning of America's Christmas shopping season. And it's a day where many stores offer highly promoted sales and open very early, such as at midnight, or may even start their sales at some time on Thanksgiving. And the day has been known for customers waiting in long lines for stores to open, hoping to get the best deals, and even a time where there's a lot of pushing and shoving, especially if there is a limited number of a sale item, like a flat screen TV. It's definitely not a day where people seem grateful for what they already have. In fact there's a pretty funny, but true quote I've seen going around that says: Black Friday - because only in America people trample others for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have. It's funny, but it's true. Now a big retailer that's taken a stand against Black Friday is REI. Five years ago, REI's chief customer officer Ben Steele joined colleagues at a table, brainstorming Black Friday campaign ideas, when a novel idea arose: What if they just closed up shop altogether? As Steele put it, "People thought we were crazy and retailers were saying, 'Why the heck would you give up one of the busiest shopping days of the year?' To be really transparent, we didn't know if it would work. We really focused on our employees." Ultimately the risk paid off, and the REI team found that much to their surprise, the massive anti-shopping effort seemed to resonate for both consumers and retail workers who had grown weary of Black Friday. What had initially been intended as a "galvanizing moment" for REI employees had evolved into a larger cultural movement, Steele said. REI uses the hashtag OptOutside, encouraging people to Forego long lines and big box department stores on Black Friday—and head outdoors instead. I want to encourage you to do the same - head outside today and get out into nature. Use it as a time to get some peace and quiet. A time to spend with the people you love. And a time to really reflect and think about all that you have and all that you're grateful for. I'm Scott Colby with Say It With Gratitude and this has been your Daily Gratitude Minute. Cheers.

Unbreakable Podcast with Thom Shea

By Thom Shea Author of “Unbreakable: A Navy SEAL’s Way of Life.”   Each of us is interested in balance in our lives, either in balancing relationships with work, work with fitness, or all things and spirituality. How do we balance the multiple interests we have when we cannot even excel in the small things we do each day?   Please, let me share with you reflections of 23 years as a Navy SEAL and 6 years transitioning into the nebulous business world of training leaders to lead. The simple fact that only a few people master the self-defeating idiom called “Never quit” causes most to avoid tough times and to never go beyond the point where they wanted to quit. The thing about an idiom is that the meaning of the original expression has been lost over the ages. The real meaning of “Never Quit” is to actually embrace the moments when you want to quit and push beyond them. There is no real valid reason to quit.   So few companies, so few leaders, so few parents, and so few coaches these days actually use the dynamics of learning how not to quit as the foundation for success. So since the real foundation for success is gone we build everything on sand. We quit in school at early ages because parents are not clear that kids need the experience the gravity of learning and not being prepared and require the firm hand of strong parents to try again. Sports no longer allow or better yet force players to fail and experience loss so they learn to never quit, so they quit in the first half when they other team scores. Or the quit in the forth quarter when they think they have won.   That is the current foundation we then take into our adult lives.   One of the most unattended and at the same time highly recognizable conditions for every person anywhere is quitting. Now what I mean regarding quitting is that quitting is so pervasive in the world that few actually engage in mastering the benefits surrounding “quitting.” Since everyone quits now there is a reward for just showing up. Tragic! SEALs learned long ago that to be truly successful, you must face the depths of failure, and the cause of all failure is quitting. They make training so hard and so unwinnable and so painful quitting is the only solution. We weed out people who quit because in real life, in combat you cannot have people quit or everyone will die.   Make an honest list of your physical capacity, your intellectual facility, your wealth accomplishments, your relationship endeavors, and finally your spiritual life … notice both the small things you have quit on in each and the big things you have not been able to accomplish. Stop when you get to 5 things because honestly the list will go on and on and on.   I want to share with you the depth at which I have encountered quitting in my own life and the far reaches I have seen “quitting” show up in the lives of others. I held this section out of the manuscript when I presented it to my publisher of Unbreakable a navy SEALs way of life for one simple reason, because quitting is so brutal and seductive that I personally felt opening up the “Pandora’s Box” that surrounds quitting would turn off everyone who might read it. And, I didn’t want Stacy to know how many times I quit on my men, and on her, and on my self.   In reading “Unbreakable: A Navy SEAL’s Way of Life,” you surely will have noticed some small elements of how you do give up and quit while you attempted to accomplish the 13 Unbreakable lessons, so you know that as I share this final lesson, the effect of quitting is real and pervasive. As you read these lost writings, my intent is that the reading will open up your own “Pandora’s Box” and you will encounter how frequently you quit in all aspects of your own life, or worse yet, quit before you even start.   What would your life actually be like if you mastered quitting?   I often wonder, because after encountering quitting in my own life and being pushed in SEAL training to just push beyond quitting, I see and interact with all aspects of life very differently than those around me who have not and will not encounter quitting. All of the 13 “Unbreakable Lessons” were written for my children to discover various wonderful tools they would need to grow in your life in case I died in combat. The 13 Unbreakable lessons (you must read Unbreakable and do the lessons first) are tools to this final lesson … “Just never quit on yourself.”   To master quitting, I ask you to stop avoiding the things you are afraid of doing, or simply to stop avoiding quitting. I want you to face a fear of anything you have and safely realize that fear- feel it in your soul. By safely I mean go through the process internally to the point where you are internally going through and feeling the fear. That is to say, if you are afraid of something because you fear dying/doing it. I ask you to go through the mental process of experiencing that exact thing.   Physical Quitting (example): Identify something physically that you encounter that makes you want to quit or makes you afraid to encounter. Internally I want you to imagine the whole thing unfolding as if you quit. I want you to imagine quitting in the middle of a run when you legs are hurting or you are out of breath and don’t want to continue. I ask you to put yourself there and actually experience the pain. Don’t run away from the pain. Feel it. After having imagined it happening, I ask you to go on that exact run with the intent to quit at the exact spot you had imagined quitting. Now that you are on the side of the road or trail feeling sorry for yourself and in pain. I want you to notice something. I want you to notice that you are feeling pain and you are out of breath, and at the same time you told yourself to quit. You used Internal Dialogue to talk yourself into stopping. No one else told you to quit, you did. Now I want you to sit there and keep telling yourself to quit that you are a victim of bad genetics; that you are never going to be a successful runner, or any other victim of life language you can put there to ensure you will quit. Tell yourself you are a quitter until you begin to laugh. Some of you may not get to laughter, simply because you have programmed yourself to believe you are a victim and not a winner. If you do start to laugh, you are seeing the power of Internal Dialogue in driving your performance. If you laugh then just replace I am a quitter with a new dialogue, that says to you get up and go two more steps.   You can do this same experiment with intellectual, with wealth, with relationship, and with spiritual mastery. Just quit on yourself in each until you begin to hear in your internal dialogue, the language that keeps you quitting and from quitting.   Imagine quitting on your husband or wife. Imagine any or every situation they could bring to you that would make you quit. They cheated, they called you a name, they stop saying I love you, they may even say they hate you. Keep quitting on them. Imagine quitting and getting a divorce, walking away from your family and kids. Quit because you are a victim and no one treats you right. Quit because raising kids is too hard. Go ahead quit. Surround yourself with everyone who agrees with you. The Quitters tribe.   Eventually quitters find them selves alone, and empty, and bitter, and even their quitter tribe quits on them because that my friends is what happens when you quit.   You will notice that you quit on studying with a very robust dialogue; you will notice that you quit on business and work using very believable dialogue; you will notice that you quit on your partners clearly because you say “they aren’t … whatever”; and you will notice that you quit on spiritual mastery for very earthly, and real reasons.   What would you life be like if you never quit?   In school when you feel like quitting because some bully punched you in the mouth, you instead learn how to protect yourself and face the bully down. Never giving up is the cure to bullying. So you are studying and you cannot figure it out. Take a break and ask for help and get to it again. Don’t listen to people who say you need sleep, freaking study until you pass out for god’s sake.   You young athletes and coaches, Practice hard. Practice until they get it wrong not until they get it right. Practice until they are discouraged so that you can teach them every single play matters. Once you do this then they simply try each new play with all they have, no matter what happened before or what the threat of the future may bring. Relentless players just don’t quit because they have already learned from coaches that feeling of loss and were able to get up and run the next play anyway.   Relationships seem to be the most prevalent place in the world today where quitting happens so rapidly and completely that life itself never seems to turn positive. First, for god’s sake, don’t hang with people who are naïve and think things are easy. They will leave you so fast you won’t remember the smell of their perfume. Second, don’t quit when either of you is emotional. Emotional decisions are complete shit, everyone knows this so why make a decision base on how you feel. Third, don’t quit when things are really bad such as loss of a kid, or death of a family member, or when either of you is sick or injured. Play the long game because there are things you just cannot control in the short game. Stick it out. Because if you don’t learn to stick it out with this person, you will be really trained and extremely efficient on quitting with the next person.   I personally never quit on five hell weeks. The first four I got injured, I had a concussion, I dislocated my shoulder, I got pneumonia twice, and the fifth one I just didn’t quit even though it made no sense to continue. I took that never quit mentality into my career and never quit during 2000 hours of combat during four combat tours and brought back every single guy in my platoon. I have trained 85 people in six years to create a foundation for not quitting in their lives and have seen marriages turn around, families come back together that were completely split up. I have trained 28 of my clients to run ultra marathons because once you learn how to not quit, everything becomes possible. I have seen businesses 2x profit in 9 months where were on the brink of bankruptcy.   Quitting is the most destructive force on the planet. Not quitting is the most learnable skill and only 20% of the people you know have learned it.   Learn how not to quit. Forego learning anything else.

Restructure and redundancy: When do you have to pay redundancy pay if there is alternative employment available? In this episode of the podcast I cover a question from a listener which follows on nicely from the last episode when I answered a question about changing employee hours and redundancy. In this episode I tackle the difficult issue for employers regarding suitable alternative employment and the impact of an employees refusal on their right to redundancy pay.  In this episode I will cover: The legal position in the Employment Rights Act about redundancy payments. What an employer should consider when deciding if a role is a 'suitable alternative' or not. How an employer should make an offer of alternative employment and what to include. The circumstances in which an employee can generally refuse an offer and when that refusal will be reasonable. Practical steps for employers to take when considering alternative employment. How to try to resolve potentially difficult issues with employees. Action Points If you are restructuring and there are alternative roles consider carefully how you are going to match employees with the new roles. Analyse the differences in the roles between old and new and try to consider how it will be perceived from the employee's perspective. Discuss any objections with the employee and see if you can reach an agreement. Seek advice if you are unsure whether you are required to make a redundancy payment or not. Paul explains all the reasons that Paul was rightfully entitled to be reimbursed for his ministry to the Corinthians. He then explains that the reason that he did not accept payment was to ensure that the gospel was not hindered in Corinth. Paul's life is an example of an essential truth that every believer must understand: It is our duty to forego our rights and freedoms when they might hinder the progress of the gospel. It helps others find the show! Thank you! We had a fantastic interview with Brooks.  There's no doubt he's way out front as a lead expert in the field of going paperless.  Here is a list of questions we asked Brooks (you definitely should listen to the podcast because he gave some great answers and advice!): So, Brooks...who are you and how do you make people's lives simpler? Is it really possible to go paperless? What about... Tax paperwork (Brooks sent IRS guidance, too.  Links below.) Receipts Contracts Other docs that people have been "married to" forever? How do you recommend people get started with going paperless? What does the workflow look like, or are there lots of different workflows? Your article "We Are Our Own Worst Enemy When Going Paperless" is fantastic! Can you describe some of the challenges people face when going paperless? What equipment do you recommend and why? Mac PC Scanners Mobile device/apps Etc... Your Paperless Document Organization Guide and it's an amazing value...do you have other courses? How can people sign up for your newsletter? What is the best way for people to reach you? Website: documentsnap.com Twitter: @BrooksDuncan and @DocumentSnap Facebook: facebook.com/documentsnap Dan and Vanessa Discuss Tips for Small Home Living Planning Our "Dream Home"...five years of planning Taking Action...designing, saving, paying it off and then... Oooops! Rethinking Our "Dream Home"...reasons for our change of plans: affordable green living, time to travel and visit family, not wanting to be slaves to possessions Intro to Cece Reinhardt + Brenda Daugherty from the blog “On the Green Road” Downsized their lives Totally eco-refurb’d an Airstream remodel and lived full-time in their RV Now they’re transitioning to a 500 sf house and planning a complete eco-refurb of that, too! They blog about health, travel, self-sufficiency and as they say, “anything else that blows our skirts up.” Guest Post on On The Green Road from Katie White from the blog DIY Mother: “DIY Tricks to Make the Most of a Small Living Space” (Note: We added some tips, too! Our additions to this are Italicized) The main theme was:
Reducing your footprint doesn’t have to be uncomfortable She also pointed out some of the advantages of living in a Small home. They are : Use less land and raw materials Cost less to heat and cool You’ll be less tempted to fill them with things you don’t need.  Ties right into the spin off of Parkinson’s Law we talked about back in Episode 004...“Storage requirements will increase to meet storage capacity" Kitchen Keypoints: Small kitchens can be noisy, crowded little pressure-cookers, breeding hot tempers and short fuses. Paint your kitchen in light, cool shades to help everyone relax, and if possible, coordinate the entire kitchen in two or three colors to avoid a busy, disorganized vibe. Another simple trick to increase the visual space in your kitchen is to try open shelving instead of cupboards. We have raised Euro-style cabinets off the floor so you can see under them...it adds visual depth. Also, a mix of solid frosted glass cabinet doors help, too. Tall upper cabinets really max out your vertical storage space. Pull-out lower drawers, versus standard cabinets are a lifesaver. Forego “uni-tasker” appliances and opt for multitasking appliances. Living Room Lessons: The easiest way to open up your living room is to get things off the floor. Instead of a clunky bookshelf, try wall-mounted shelves. Small house plants and lighting can also be placed on the walls or ceiling (Hanging plants are especially good for small living rooms).
