On today's episode, we welcome the multi-talented Kim Ray, a writer, producer, and director whose career spans reality TV, documentaries, and scripted projects. Best known for her work on the Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, Kim's journey through the industry is an inspiring tale of creativity, resilience, and innovation. Our conversation begins with Kim's fascinating experience co-writing West Bank Story, a parody of West Side Story that cleverly blended humor with themes of peace and cultural commonality. As Kim describes, “It was about showing that even in a world full of conflict, there's so much that connects us.” The project, which gained significant recognition, was a testament to her ability to merge art with meaningful messages.Kim's transition into reality television was both unexpected and transformative. While it wasn't her original focus, she brought her narrative expertise to shows like The X Factor and Kendra on Top. “Reality TV,” Kim explains, “requires storytelling that's just as nuanced as scripted work. You're shaping real moments into something cohesive and engaging.” Her work on these projects highlights her adaptability and deep understanding of human emotion. One of the standout points in Kim's career was producing Gaga: Five Foot Two. The project offered an intimate glimpse into Lady Gaga's life, showcasing her vulnerabilities and strength. Kim recounts the challenges of crafting such an unfiltered narrative, saying, “The magic was in the authenticity. Gaga was raw and real, and we wanted viewers to feel like they were walking alongside her.” The minimal crew and close collaboration created an unparalleled connection between the subject and the audience.Beyond her professional achievements, Kim's insights into the industry's evolution are enlightening. She speaks candidly about the systemic challenges women face in Hollywood, sharing how she navigated a landscape often dominated by male voices. Her reflections on the #MeToo movement underscore the importance of platforms like social media for amplifying marginalized voices. “It's a double-edged sword,” Kim notes, “but it's also a powerful tool for change.”Kim's current project, Violet's New Life, delves into the futuristic concept of consciousness transfer. The short film and pilot explore what it means to live again in a synthetic body, blending technology and human emotion. As Kim puts it, “It's not just about immortality—it's about the psychology of starting over, carrying the weight of one life into another.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

This week, Tara and Kris start by celebrating the conclusion of the WGA strike and sending support for SAG-AFTRA in their continued quest for an equitable deal. Looking ahead, they wonder about the future of AI. Tara doesn't think it's as bleak as it sounds. Kris disagrees. Luckily we have opinions on survival reality shows to bring us together.  After getting deep into Alone Australia and Survivor, we hear more about RuPaul's Drag Race UK from Tara and then dive headlong into recommendations! Official Recommendations From Kris: Gaga: Five Foot Two (Netflix) This week, Kris recommends the 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, which covers a year in the life of Lady Gaga as she works on her fifth studio release album, Joanne. It's a deeply vulnerable piece according to Kris, examining long standing pain conditions that the artist suffers from. It also details the 51st Super Bowl half-time show where Gaga gave her critically acclaimed appearance. From Tara: Bingo Love by Tee Franklin (Author), Jenn St-Onge (Artist) After comic creator Lawrence Lindell talked about it in our bonus episode with him, Tara picked up one of the books he suggested: Bingo Love. Spoiler: she fell in love with it. Bingo Love is a second-chance romance between two Black women that starts in the 1960s when they meet and become instant best friends at their church's Sunday bingo. Separated once their relationship turns romantic and is discovered, they go on to marry men, have families, and then meet once more sixties at another Sunday bingo when they're in their 60's. It's a beautiful story about love, second chances, and honestly how many stories like this include Black women? We love to see it. Check it out. When I was in middle school in the suburbs of Maryland, a man—let’s call him Robert—started doing some occasional gardening and housecleaning for my parents. By high school, Robert was our full-time housekeeper and a nanny for me and my sister, a family member, really. And he had become a she—let’s call her Tina. My sister and I learned to use her new pronouns and we watched as her clothes and then, with the help of hormones and surgery, her body changed to that of a woman. At the same time, the transition we went through with Tina at home was playing out in American popular culture. Homosexuality and drag and other queer lives and identities came out of the closet and onto the stage, screen, and streets. In 1984, in Mahattan’s Tompkins Square Park, Wigstock was born. It started as a kind of afterparty and evolved into a DIY, outrageous, funny, and fabulous annual drag festival that by the 90’s was drawing crowds in the thousands. It’s hard even to think back to the time when Robert who became Tina had to hide who she was for fear of upsetting her religious mother or—who knows—maybe not getting that job with my folks. In a world where RuPaul’s Drag Race is going into its 12th smash season, It’s easy to forget the courage it took, and still takes, for so many people to live on the outside what they know they are on the inside. My guest today is documentary filmmaker Chris Moukarbel, the director of Lady Gaga biopic GAGA FIVE FOOT TWO. In his new HBO documentary WIG, Chris and his stars—including Lady Bunny, Charlene Incarnate, and many more—take us back through the history of drag in New York City. And they show that now more than ever we need public spaces like Wigstock where we can perform, amplify, and celebrate our differences. Welcome faithful followers to another prodigious podcast of the Reel Film Nerds hosted by your buddies Mysterious Mike and Matt Hinshaw.  Today the movie geeks discuss what will probably be an Academy Award winning film, A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.  Matt and Mike really dive deep into this film both being not only movie aficionados but also huge music fans.  They talk about the music industry, addiction, Metallica, their home state of Arizona, and this thing called the radio that is like podcasting but through the air?  A Star Is Born is an incredible directorial debut for Bradley Cooper.  The song choice and the singing were real treats and not to be missed.  Lady Gaga did an incredible job acting.  It was almost like this role was written for her.  Bonus tip there is a documentary about Lady Gaga on Netflix called Gaga: Five Foot Two that is a nice companion piece to this film.  Mike and Matt both really enjoyed A Star Is Born.  They line up on their rating again awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels.  This movie is well worth the money so make sure to go see it in a theater. Thanks for listening and following us on the socials.
