On this episode of Random Encounter, we're "cranking" up our game to chat about a farming-centric piece of DLC for a pixel-art action RPG and a rogue-like on a tiny, black-and-white screen.First, Nick is here to share his thoughts about the farming DLC for 2021's Eastward, Eastward: Octopia. Having received solid reviews back when it was released, this new DLC strips out all of the combat and replaces it with some robust farm-sim mechanics. Coming in at around 20 hours' worth of gameplay for $6, Octopia might be an essential purchase for anyone who loves the original title or farming games! Then, Tim makes his first appearance on Random to chat about the rogue-like RPG Under the Castle and the tiny handheld console you need to play it, the Playdate. The Playdate is a fascinating piece of hardware, looking like a tiny, high-resolution yellow Gameboy Pocket with a crank on the side. The system is pricy, but does Tim think it and Under the Castle are worth the money?Featuring: Jono Logan, Nick Mangiaracina, and Tim Rattray; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Eastward ReviewEastward - Octopia ReviewUnder the Castle Review
TCW Podcast Episode 200 - The History of Handheld Games Part 3 In our concluding episode exploring the evolution of handheld games, we kick off with the Amiga and the allure of bouncing balls before delving into the Atari Lynx, an early and captivating handheld console. Despite its appeal, the Lynx struggled against challenges like its high price, the limited library of engaging games, and subpar battery life, ultimately being overshadowed by the Nintendo Game Boy—a device well-suited for puzzle games. Sega's Game Gear, whose origin may have stolen its design from Nintendo or Epyx- It's complicated. The Game Gear was notable but never had a lasting impact. Gunpei Yokoi took a daring leap with the Virtual Boy, which unfortunately flopped, returning to familiar ground with the Game Boy Pocket. Yokoi's departure coincided with the rise of Pokémon, injecting new vitality into handheld gaming. Yokoi later founded his own company, contributing to the development of Bandai's Wonderswan. This prompted Nintendo's response with the Game Boy Color. Despite various attempts, no other company has managed to dethrone Nintendo as the undisputed king of handheld consoles. I have fond memories of playing Mario fan games on the computer at school, right along with Cool-Math Games. There were some super good ones, like Super Mario 63, but most were really bad. A lot of them used the Super Mario All-Star sprites (the ones used for SMB and Lost Levels), which I believe has actually ruined the art style for me! However, those were just browser games. I haven't really played many ROM Hacks, but looking at them they seem really cool. Outro Thanks for listening to the RetroLogic Podcast! We are proudly part of the Nintendo Dads family of podcasts.

To wrap up my system selection course of experience, i discuss all of the Nintendo systems i've owned and enjoyed except for the Game Boy Pocket, which will always be near and dear to my heart!
My review of the Game Boy Pocket and the reason it is best suited to play Street Fighter 2 on this version of the legendary handheld!
Dizzy tech for the game, and the fact that the Game Boy Pocket is the best arcade handheld system in history! Hadoken!
After the handing down of my Game Boy Pocket to my toddler son who doesn't understand the difference between it, stuffed animals, food and things to put in mouth, I draw up my perfect gaming console! (FM tuner, backlight, no wifi)
If i had to choose between the Game Boy Pocket and Street Fighter 2 cartridge...
"AAA Batteries!" A quick reason to state why the charm of the Game Boy Pocket using AAA batteries is something that sadly will not be replicated!
"Behold the glory that is the Game Boy Pocket's directional pad!" -Seth from Ultra Street Fighter IV (maybe). All of the Game Boys (except for the Advance SP) in my humblest of opinions have the best D-Pad. I'll explain why the first game console/system you play has a huge effect on controller preference
Retro Arcade "Front-End" emulator has an option that allows the Special Championship Edition of Street Fighter 2 to appear in pea-soup color, similar to the original Game Boy! Viewing the gameplay, how does it compare to the Game Boy version of Street Fighter 2? And in monochrome madness, i talk about the differences with the green and black and white pallet of the original Game Boy and the straight (outta Compton) black and white Game Boy Pocket!
-Street Fighter 2 for the Game Boy. -Interact Mega Memory Card. -Game Boy Pocket. AAA Batteries. All of them! Is this finally the completion of my bucket list item?
In today's tech and gaming news we talked about: -The Analogue Pocket. A Gameboy Pocket lookalike that uses 2 FPGAs that allows you to play Game Boy, GBC, and GBA games natively without emulation. The Pixel 4 face unlock feature works even without your prompting and without you even needing to open your eyes. Yikes! Don't let someone you don't trust around your new Pixel 4. -Studio Ghibli's entire library is coming to HBO Max. But is it too expensive to even be worth it? -nVidia Shield TV Pro leaked. Nee, echt.

How's it going everyone? We're back with MEGA Episode 8! I talk about my limited experience with the Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Advance when it comes to chiptune music and I also talk about RGB video output for the SNES and Super Famicom consoles. Corrections: I stated that CSYNC stood for Component Sync which is erroneous. CSYNC = Composite Sync. I included a link to the My Life In Gaming youtube video about RGB and Sync which are much more in depth than my description. Links: ΩNΩNΩ Email Us!
